• Web server (IIS) and database mirroring (Postgresql)

  Recently our web-server crashed and we had to recover everything from a backup which took the whole day(totally unacceptable in our business). So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future? Our main server is on Amazon with Windows 2008/IIS + Postgresql 9.1. I was thinking on creating the same server on a different location as a complete mirror with the database replication. But I'm not sure how to implement IIS instance mirroring over the internet... So my question is, how can I create a complete mirror of the server that I can use (switch dns to) in case the same disaster happens in the future?

• best ftp program (paid - not free)

  Just would like some feedback on the best ftp program (not free). The requirements I'm looking for is: - secure ftp - for use on mac, linux, windows - backup utility with scheduler - for use on more than one computer (multi-license) I'm using wsftp from 2007 right now but it's only good for windows. It's license is only good for one computer. And after some vista updates it's making some strange noises. I tried to turn off the noise (via control panel) and it's still making that noise and I turned off the sound within wsftp too. I like the program but I think it's time to look for a new one. • Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

  I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

• Launching mysql server: same permissions for root and for user

  Hi folks, have been directed here from stackoverflow here, am reposting the question and adding my.cnf at the end of a post. so far in my 10+ years experience with linux, all the permission problems I've ever encountered, have been successfully solved with chmod -R 777 /path/where/the/problem/has/occured (every lie has a grain of truth in it :) This time the trick doesn't work, so I'm turning to you for help. I'm compiling mysql server from scratch with zc.buildout (www . buildout . org). I do launch it by executing /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, this works. The thing is that i'll be launching this from within supervisor (supervisord . org) script, and when used on the deployment server, it'll need it to be launched with root permissions(so that nginx server, launched with the same script, would have access to 80 port). The problem is that sudo /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, fails, generating the error, posted bellow, in mysql error log (apache and nginx works as expected). http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/216045 suggests, that "there are two errors: A missing table and a file system that mysqld doesn't have access to". Mysqldatadir and all the mysql server binary files has 777 permissions, talbe mysql.plugin does exist and has 777 permissions (why Can't open the mysql.plugin table?), "sudo touch mysql_datadir/tmp/file" does create file (why Can't create/write to file /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir/tmp/ib4e9Huz?). chgrp -R mysql mysql_datadir and adding "root, toinbis, mysql" users to mysql group ( cat /etc/group | grep mysql outputs mysql:x:124:root,toinbis,mysql) has no effect - when i launch it as a casual user, it starts, when as a root - it fails. Does mysql server, even started as root, tries to operate as other, let's say, 'mysql' user? but even in that case, adding mysql user to mysql group and making all the mysql_datadirs files belong to mysql group should make things work smoothly. • Why the huge difference between etch and lenny MySQL

  I've been working on a program for the last year. The development environment is working with a database in MySQL running on debian etch version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32, for pc-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. The production environment is working on debian lenny with version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a, for debian-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. I was just timing some database access and what takes in the development environment 150 seconds, takes 300 in the production environment. I checked the /etc/mysql/my.cnf files on both systems and the only differences are # development bind-address = 10.168.1.82 log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log # production bind-address = 127.0.0.1 myisam-recover = BACKUP #log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log I dump a database from the production and load it into the development and with the same server everything takes half the time !!! What should I check?

• Can you use a USB dongle inside a VMWare ESX Virual Machine?

  Howdy, I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible. • Xcopy /exclude does not exclude some of the specified criteria

  Good afternoon. I want xcopy to copy all files meeting a certain criteria located in the C drive to a specific folder, except ones located in the directories specified in excl.txt. The exclusions only work partially - the files located in %systemroot%, %programfiles% and in each profile's appdata are still copied, even though those directories are listed in excl.txt. How do I make xcopy skip those directories, preferentially still using environment vars to specify the paths? My current syntax is: xcopy /s /c /d /h /i /r /y /g /f /EXCLUDE:excl.txt %systemdrive%\*.doc f:\test\ excl.txt currently contains the following: \%temp%\ \%userprofile%\appdata \%programfiles%\ \%programfiles(x86)%\ \%systemroot%\ \%programdata%\ appdata windows %programfiles% Thank you very much.

• Ubuntu with Netatalk and Samba TimeMachine can't connect

  I installed netatalk on my Ubuntu Server a few weeks ago and configured it so that I could use Timemachine from my mac to backup on a server instead of a external hard drive. It worked really good until yesterday when I installed Samba to be able to share certain folders on my server to my mac. Now I receive an error msg: There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem. From what I understand is that the problem is on the server and not on my mac. I have tried to restart the computer and without adding any of the folders Samba is sharing adding the timemachine "afp://...@...". Is there a problem running them both at the same time, do I need to configure samba so that it doesn't reject afp? I'm pretty new at this...

• Remote File Copy - Win Server 2008

  I'd like to copy backup archives from a remote server to my client machine. In the past, I've installed an FTP server on the remote machine and directed local server backups to dump into that directory. I'd then FTP in from my client machine. Just wondering if there is a simpler way to do this using Win 7 (Client) Win Server 2008? Robocopy? RDC command line options? For example, I can easily remote desktop in and drag the files from the server to my local machine. If there is an easy command line way to do this, then I don't have to setup an FTP server which is ideal. Thanks.

• VSS error 12293 after system disk clone (Win2003)

  Hi! After cloning a windows 2003 installation from a single drive onto two mirrored drives using Acronis Disk Director, VSS no longer works, filing events 12293 and 7001 when trying to use backup tools, and additionally giving error 0x8004230f when accessing the Shadow copy tab of disk properties. I've google-researched this quite throughly, and found a suggested fix[1]: replacing the MBR signature of the disk. This would cause windows to invalidate old shadow copy information, which supposedly would make it all work again. However, I am a bit nervous over this... Is there a possiblity of messing this up somehow, because of the mbr originating from a single disk install, and now residing on a raid mirror? Has anyone here had this problem and solved it? • Format (remove) HDD volume that is visible in Windows 7 Disk Management but not diskpart.exe

  I'm trying to get iRST working on a SSD I installed in my lenovo u410. As part of that process, I created a hibernation partition and was fiddling around with RAID/AHCI settings. I managed to make my computer unbootable. No sweat, I just restored it with Lenovo's 1 key system. Now, however, I can't do anything with that hybernation partition! I can see it: (It's the 7.81 GB partition). But when I try to delete it in Diskpart.exe to reclaim the space and try the formatting again I only see this: I can't do anything with the partition in Disk Management either. Right clicking only shows the 'help' option. Can anyone suggest a way to edit these partitions with windows or, at least, reccomend a program that might help me fix this? Note, I'd rather not delete the 16 GB OEM partition that I believe holds the backup for this computer.

• ATI radeon hd 5450 Graphics Card Issues

  I have an Old Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with an Intel Core 2 Processor (windows 7). Now This can hold a PCI-E x16 port. Now I got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 low profile. I plugged and played and it fits without a hitch, the software installed too! , now for the graphics well... It doesn't really work at all as it seems to freeze at the moment that it loads on the windows logo. It loads into safe mode so I'm not really sure what the problem is. Any ideas, I read the dell forums and they should be somewhat compatible... with the specs so I'm at a loss here. and I am a novice here. Ideas? Edit I have tried to reset the cmos,no luck there. I have tried to move the ram as well. nothing big happened.

• Mapping drives on MacOSX (Leopard/Snow Leopard) permanently inside LAN

  Hi, How do I "map" shared folders on a Mac, permanently? With map, I do not mean 'connect', but permanently add it to the system so it exists after reboot. Since workstations tend to shutdown, I wonder also the symptoms and cures in case that happens. In Linux, this can be done using the fstab file, but I noticed that volumes are mounted in a different structure than Linux. I need this to backup some workstations, doing a recursive job over a single directory, that should contain the shared folders. I use Terminal to access the main system, so by preference, the solution would be nice that works within a bash shell vs GUI. I can access all folders in Finder. Thanks!

• Windows Security Center Service is missing

  I am trying to fix a Windows 7 machine here that has been infected with all kinds of Malware. I have removed all of them as far as I can see but I am stumped by one last task. One little bugger managed to remove the Windows Security Center service from the list of Windows services. So I cannot start it or set to automatically start. At the moment I cannot get the Windows firewall to turn on or any anti-virus software. The security center shows the following image when I try: Does anyone know how to add this back to the list of services so I may set it to start. • Internal USB A Female to motherboard 4-pin that mounts internally

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this but that is physically mountable internally rather than on a cable? I'm planning on building a super low profile "gateway" pc that is dedicated to handling internet traffic in my home. I have a great 1U rackmountable chassis for an ITX motherboard, but I need the hard drive real estate for the additional NIC required to run a gateway (one onboard and one PCI). So the plan is to use a small 8GB USB Jump Drive for the OS inside the box (as to not have one hanging out the back. And although it's racked, I still don't want the jump drive flopping around internally, so I want it fixed somehow. I have an alternative idea where by I use a flush mount zap strap saddle and a zip tie to hold it in place, but that seems kind of like a hack.

• ReadyNAS running slow

  We have a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+ that we are using just for filestorage. While it appears to be running normally as a fileserver, the admin functions run incredibly slow. Sometimes, backups take so long that they don't finish before the next run is due to start, and if I try to look at the backup logs or download the system logs, all I get is the busy "whirling wheel", until I get a "System is busy message". Is this just the system being bolshy, or is it a sign of problems to come, and what can I do to diagnose them?

• Purging old Exchange email/content on SBS2003

  We have a Windows SBS 2003 server that used to manage email, calendaring and such like for a small organisation via Exchange. We successfully migrated everything to Google Apps for Business about 18 months ago. The server only provides local network services now. We have backed up and virtualized this machine and would now like to purge any residual mail to save disk space and speed up backup etc. The disk space is such that I believe the Exchange mail is still on there somewhere. I've stumbled through System Manager and poked about but cannot confirm whether this is the case. Where would this live and how might I go about it? (Disclaimer: I'm not a Windows admin, Linux is my thing...)

  Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. • iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected]. • Debian Squeeze locale settings

  I have a problem with a slightly customised Debian image that I'm trying to do some headless work on. The problem is that the installed locales list has been reduced to this: C en_GB en_GB.iso88591 en_GB.iso885915 en_GB.utf8 POSIX However, when I log in as root (with an otherwise as-vanilla profile), I find this: ~# set | grep LC_ LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 That's the only LC_ environment variable set, and presumably that means that it's being explicitly set somewhere (and given that /etc/default/locale only contains LANG=en_GB, I can't see any other alternative). However, I can't see where it is being set, and the fact that it's wrong is preventing, for example, postgresql-8.4 from installing. I know I can do an LC_CTYPE=en_GB apt-get install postgresql-8.4 to work around this, but I'd really like to understand where this setting comes from, and I really dislike the idea of installing an otherwise-unnecessary locale to make this go away. So: where does this LC_CTYPE setting come from, and how do I make it go away?

• On a Mac, how are connections (possibly by spyware) made to outside internet addresses during initia

  I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

• What database is easy to maintain and manage in a cluster?

  I'm looking for a database (DBMS) that is easy to scale out. I would like to have high availability so I need a multi-master cluster, where the data is replicated to two or more physical computers. I would also like to be able to start with one node (no replication), and then scale out to more nodes as needed without a reinstallation or downtime. I would like to have a DBMS that are easy to maintain and manage. It should be easy to add nodes, remove nodes, take live backup and monitor the use of resources. It doesn't have to be a relational database system, so a NoSQL is okey. And I would like to have a free version so I can test it in small scale and compare it with alternatives. What alternatives do I have?
