• How do I prevent missing network from slowing down boot-up?

  I have been having rather slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04. Lately, I tried to figure out the reason and it seems to be the network connection which does not get connected and requires multiple attempts. • UIView animation only animating some of the things I ask it to

  I have a series of (say) boxes on the screen in a row, all subviews of my main view. Each is a UIView. I want to shift them all left and have a new view also enter the screen from the right in lockstep. (Or possibly they jump without animation to their end locations). And! If I comment out the whole business of creating the new subview offscreen... the ones onscreen do animate correctly! Huh? • Volume widget issue with sound card hotplugging

  When plugging a USB sound card may sometimes cause the current audio output (ie. Banshee and PC speakers) to switch immediately. But the volume controls (sound widget in systray, volume keyboard keys) are stuck on the old sound card. Plug a soundcard and amplifier while the volume is set to ultra high for the pc speakers. You can't control the volume without opening the sound settings or alsamixer. This could probably cause neighbour disturbance in some countries. You can't control it with the sound widget of the systray nor the volume keyboard keys. How to disable auto switch of hardware audio output, or enable auto switch of software volume controls ? It would be great to make the software behaviour consistent with the hardware's. Ubuntu 11.10 vanilla up to date.

• Installer Dialog comes up with Scroll bars on 800x480 resolution

  I am building an msi using WISE. The Dialogs appear fine when run on a 1280x800 resolution screen. But when I run the same msi on a 800x480 resolution screen, the installer dialog appears really huge and you cannot see the whole dialog on the screen.However, the dialog now comes up with a vertical and horizontal scrollbar allowing you to scroll and view it fully. Is there any property I need to set to adjust the installer dialog such that it appears properly on both higher and lower resolution screens?

• Can someone code review my small SDL app? Want to make sure I didn't make any beginner mistakes

  In an effort to teach myself the SDL library (hence my stack overflow handle :) ) I wanted to try my hand at a side-scroller. My code is complete but I want some feedback (mostly because I have an atrocious amount of if and else statements for what seems like some simple logic). My "program" is a c++ side-scroller where you move a single sprite across the screen. No jumping, bad guys, guns, scores, levels or anything. I wanted to use this as a base to build up upon. So I figured if my base is wrong I could end up with some pretty bad future apps. It's also multi-threaded. Next up on this I would like to make the person sprite animated (so it looks like he's walking rather than sliding) as well as make the person go faster when the arrow buttons are held down longer). • Ubuntu 12.04 OpenCL with Intel and Radeon?

  I want to setup my Ubuntu 12.04 with OpenCL(Open Computing Language) support for i7 2600k and Radeon HD5870. My Monitor is connected to the integrated Graphics of the i7. Intel OpenCL SDK is installed and working. Iteration of avaliable OpenCL devices shows 2 entries for Intel. As recommended I installed AMD APP SDK 2.6 first and then the fglrx driver. I installed fglrx from Ubuntu repositories. This works fine till here. When I run aticonfig --inital -f and restart the system I get into trouble.   I'm using 10.10 and I need to run a script in order to get a windows-like international keyboard layout - basically, it changes how dead keys work. (Original script from this page http://t.tam.atbh.us/en/win-us-intl-4-linux/ ) Since I can't seem to manage to get it going from boot, I have to run a custom script to launch any application. The script: export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim setxkbmap us intl xmodmap -e 'keycode 48 = dead_acute dead_diaeresis dead_acute dead_diaeresis acute diaeresis' application_name So if I put abiword in the application_name, it runs abiword respecting the keyboard script. Ideally, the original script would start at boot and then any applications I use would function with it - just like what happens if I run it first in Terminal (without the app_name line) and then run apps from it. I tried to make the script run from boot by adding it to /etc/rc.local but to no avail. Tried to add it to init.d but that also didn't work. If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

  I am 16 years old and I love to program and playing the piano. It's not uncommon that I'm bashing away on my mouse and keyboard all day long. I do not feel any pains doing so. Yet I am still worried, because I often hear from people that they can never type for longer then 10 minutes again without getting severe pains. Given my two hobbies, programming and playing the piano that worries me a lot.   I'm writing a Java application with movable frames, and I've come across a quirk in Linux. I'm running GNOME 2.16.0 under CentOS. When I use JFrame.setBounds to set the bounds to any location that's half off the screen, it actually sets the location of the frame to be as close as possible to the bounds specified while still staying completely on the screen. This is confusing because other non-Java windows can move half off the screen. How do I tell Java to tell GNOME to actually put the frame where I specify, even if that's half off the screen?

• Storyboard editor layout confusion

  I am having layout problems with the storyboard editor with a fairly simple screen. I have a UIViewController to which I have added a 320x440 UIScrollView at 0,0 followed by a 320x20 UIProgressBar at 0,440. It looks fine in Storyboard editor. I'm not entirely sure how the 20 pixel status bar at the top of the screen is accommodated given the CGRect frame coordinates that Storyboard calculates. On loading ( in -(void)viewDidLoad ), the UIScrollView frame seems to be set to 320x460 pixels at 0,0 but the UIProgressBar is still 320x20 at 0,440. When I add subviews to the UIScrollView, (UIImageViews in particular), they get stretched and get clipped on the screen because although the UIScrollView thinks it is 460 pixels high, it only has 440 pixels of screen to display in. Can anyone point me to a solution? Thanks

  Recently I wanted to test the a keyboard shortcut, which is supposed to kill X server (hence very useful when you have a crash). That shortcut is not dependent on any particular window manager (like lxde, unity, kwin etc). So, it must work, even when you have unresponsive window manager (as opposed to Alt+Ctrl+Backspace which kills the session, and bring you a login screen). That's why I interested to make my WM (unity) unresponsive. Is past, it was very easy. Opening a terminal, typing unity --replace and then force close the terminal, was the simplest procedure. But unfortunately, This is not true in Ubuntu 12.04, (they make it very robust) Because whenever I kill the terminal, Unity automagically restart itself. I also tried compiz --replace but wasn't successful. My question is: How can I make Unity unresponsive while I am in Unity session, so that window manager does not recognize any keyboard shortcut.

• Brightness issues on MSI GT683

  I'm experiencing brightness related issues on my MSI GT683 (Intel Core i5-2410M, nVidia GeForce GTX 560M, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64, nVidia driver version 295.40). To start with, when I open brightness settings, the slider is working incorrectly - screen is the dimmest on about 1/3 of a bar, moving it to the left side increases brightness. Next, while pressing the keyboard buttons (Fn+up, Fn+down), brightness changes incorrectly - sometimes 2 steps up/down, but sometimes it's totally irregular - ex. in order to set the lowest brightness, I have to set the maximum, then hit Fn+down, then Fn+up. (after 2 moves from 8 to 2... What's even more strange, while changing brightness from keyboard on boot and on login screen, it works perfect. Tried adding acpi related switches to GRUB, but the brightness settings wouldn't work at all. Any help appreciated.

Can I override this? I tried setting it explicitly via both: sudo echo 500 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness sudo echo 500 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness But I get a permission denied error. When at the lower bounds via my keyboard's brighness controls, acpi_video0/actual_brightness is 0, and intel_backlight/actual_brightness is 729. Can I set the latter value to be even lower?

• Getting x/y coordinate of a UITouch...

  HI, I have been trying to get the x/y coordinates from a touch on any iDevice. When getting the touch locations, everything looks ok if the touch is in the middle of the screen. But if I drag my finger to the bottom of the screen, I can only get a y coordinate of 1015. It should be getting to 1023. Same thing for dragging my finger to the top of the screen. I get -6. It should be 0. I have explicitly set the window and views to an origin of 0,0 and the width, height of the device's screen. Still nothing. I am really lost on what might be going on. Is something shifted? Am I not reading the x/y coordinates properly. Does something need to be transformed or converted? Any help would be much appreciated. T

It's instructed that I need to use the String library compareTo()/charAt()/toLowerCase() to make all the characters lowercase so the Lexicon comparison is also a alphabetical comparison. The bubble sort seems to be more efficient though they seem to have equal stats for worst best and avg case, but I read the Insertion Sort is quicker for small amounts of data like my case.

• Java Robot class and UAC

  I am using the Java Robot class to take screenshots, my problem is that in W7 when the UAC dialog is shown (i right click on any application and select run as Admin) it will not appear in the screen shot or the whole screen is just black. Running my application with admin rights or as a service does not solve the problem. Please, does any one know what to do so that i will be able to capture the screen even when the UAC is showing?   I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 with the Windows installer. It appears to be running fine, however the screen is extremely dull and I don't appear to be able to adjust the brightness... I entered the settings and tried to play with the brightness there, however there is no change in apparent brightness whether it is set to high or low on the menu. I am using an Acer Aspire 5332 with Windows 7 Ultimate. It is worth noting that the original keyboard from the laptop no longer works, so I am using a USB keyboard (meaning that I don't have access to the Fn keys)...

• Blackberry invalidate field not causing a repaint

  I'm writing a Blackberry app. I have a custom list field where I can select an item in the list which pushes the edit screen onto the stack. I edit the item and save, and when I pop that screen off so I am back on my list screen, I want to view the update I just made reflected in the list. I have done this on other screens which just had LabelFields and it worked fine. However, with the list screen, calling invalidate() seems to do nothing. I know the value has saved correctly through print lines, and I see the paint() method in the listfield is getting called. But the only way I can get the list field to update is to delete it from the screen and re-add it. That seems wrong.   Hi, Basically I have an svg "SecondSVG" into an svg "FirstSVG" into an svg "MainSVG".Every svg has its own ViewBox. This page can be loaded anywhere on the screen by another page. So basically how can i find the screen x for viewBox for"SecondSVG" knowing that this svg can be loaded basically anywhere based on the calling page? event.clientX gives myself the x coordinate for the screen. If I don't know the coordinate for ViewBox of "SecondSVG" then how can I find out the x coordinate inside the ViewBox of "SecondSVG"? I am using Firefox 3.6.3 and I do have an event object from which I can extract clientX, clientY and other coordinates that are relative to the screen. However what I need are the coordinates inside the ViewBox.

• boot issues - long delay, then "gave up waiting for root device"

  I've had this issue on and off for about two years now. I noticed it on a new (custom built) machine running 10.04 when that first came out, but then it went away until a few months ago. I've gone through a number of hard drive changes but I can't say specifically what if anything I changed hardware-wise to make it stop or start happening. I had assumed upgrading to a modern Ubuntu version would fix the issue, so I installed 12.04 beta on a spare partition last night, but it's still happening. Here's the issue. After grub loads and I select a kernel to boot, the screen goes blank save for a blinking cursor. It sits in this state for many long minutes before it finally gives up and gives me an initramfs shell with the message gave up waiting for root device (and lists the /dev/disk/by-uuid/... path it was waiting for) but no other specific diagnostic information. Now, here's the tricky part. For one, the problem is intermittent - sometimes it progresses from the blinking cursor to the Ubuntu splash boot screen in a few seconds, and once it gets that far it always continues booting fine. The really bizarre thing is that I can "force" it to "find" the root device by repeatedly pressing the space bar and hitting the machine's power button. If I tap those enough, eventually I will notice the hard drive light coming on, at which point it will always continue the boot process after a few seconds. Interestingly, if I wait slightly too long before pressing the power button (30s?), as soon as I press it I get the gave up waiting message and the initramfs shell. I've tried setting up /etc/fstab (and the grub menu.lst or whatever it's called nowadays) to use device names (e.g. /dev/sda1) instead of UUIDs, but I get the same effect just with the device name, not UUID, in the error message. I should also mention that when I boot to Windows 7, there is no issue. It boots slowly all the time just by virtue of being Windows, but it never hangs indefinitely. This would seem to indicate it's a problem in Ubuntu, not the hardware. It's pretty annoying to have to babysit the computer every time it boots. Any ideas? I'm at a loss.
