• Delay NTP Initialisation, Cisco 877W, IOS 12.4(24)T1

  I have a Cisco 877W which I'm using for my home ADSL connection (and as a refresher in Cisco IOS). I've got a working config in-place with my PPPoA connection coming online correctly, and VLANs and other settings configured as I want them, but I can't crack the NTP configuration. For NTP, I have the following defined ntp server 0.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 1.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 2.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ntp server 3.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 This setup works fine when issued in Global Configuration Mode when the Dialer0 interface (ATM0.1) is up. The configuration fails at startup though: Translating "1.uk.pool.ntp.org"...domain server (208.67.222.222) (208.67.220.220) ntp server 1.uk.pool.ntp.org source Dialer0 ^ % Invalid input detected at "^" marker. This is repeated for the other servers defined. Obviously the DNS lookup for the server(s) fails because the DNS servers cannot be accessed because the external interface is not yet online. Is there a way to delay the NTP configuration until afte the Dialer0 interface is fully initialised? Can the NTP commands be triggered by the Line Protocol on the Dialer0 interface transitioning to the up state? Alternatively, can the NTP commands be delayed for 5 minutes after the router has finished initialising? Any advice, or pointers to useful documentation or examples gratefully received ...

• Tuning Windows 7 for use in a VM

  I'm running Windows 7 in a VirtualBox Virtual Machine, and would like to make it run in a more streamlined fashion. I'll be using the install primarily for testing web apps, and have no need for it to run quickly. I would like it to run with minimal memory requirements, and with minimal changes to its virtual hard drive's contents. Changes to the hard drive contents, for example the paging file, result in larger snapshot sizes. Another recent post of mine seems to be related to this issue, but does not directly address issues with Windows. One concern that I have is that Windows seems to be using 17% of its paging file even with over 900MB of memory marked "Standby" or "Free". My uneducated guess is that this is being used to store indexes or some other data that helps to speed up the system but is not really necessary. I'm also wondering if it's normal for Windows to use over 500 MB of "In Use" memory with no apps running. Will this amount decrease if I reduce the amount of "installed" memory in the VM? What steps can I take to reduce the system's memory footprint without incurring an increase in paging file usage?

• Windows 7 - mysteriously missing free HDD space

  I have Windows7 installed on 50GB (Oops, it should have been 45GB, sorry) partition, and every now and then it gets full, and I have to resize that partition. I always thought it is quite normal. But it happened again today and this time, I'm sure it is not normal, because since last resizing (35GB 45GB) I did not install any new apps or whatever. Also, sum of sizes off all, including hidden & system, root folders and files is ~18GB, yet windows is indicating that all 50GB are used up... Any idea what is going on? EDIT: Great tools everyone! (SourceForge appears to be offline at the moment, I'll check WinDirStat later) Alas, non of them solved my problem just yet... Screenshot from SpaceSniffer: On the right there is some kind of "Unknows Space", any idea what that could be? EDIT2: After those two apps failing to help much I didn't expect it, but WinDirStat actually helped. It showed that those missing 27GB are in my Temp folder (Well, that should have been my first guess anyway). There I found hundreds of ~100MB files, named like HTT????.tmp. After some googling it appears to be a problem with ESET NOD32 antivirus and it's ThreatSense feature. Thank you all for help! :)

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • Are applications optimized for XenApp?

  Our IT dept are about to deploy virtualized apps using Citrix XenApp. One of these apps will be Dynamics AX 4.0 SP2, a ERP client (which I develop on). They have supposedly reached a roadblock because an external 'Dynamics AX Consultant' has told our IT Dept that Dynamics 4 will not work optimally on Citrix and will run very slow because it is not optimized for Citrix. We have it running in a Test environment now and seems ok. They have been told that the only 'solution' is to upgrade to Dynamics AX 2009 where supposedly this problem as been fixed. (not a small task for my team!) When I heard about this, I was quite surprised. From my brief knowledge of Citrix, I thought it would be application independent. How does the citrix app virtualization work, in that a particular app would work better than others on citrix? Would the speed of the virtualized app not just depend on the resources/network connection the citrix server has? FYI, Dynamics AX is a 3-tier client/server system, so the client will be accessing a AOS application server, which then accesses the database. Please enlighten me :)

  The article Refresh and reset your PC mentions exactly what happens during the refresh and reset operations in Windows 8: Refresh The PC boots into Windows RE. Windows RE scans the hard drive for your data, settings, and apps, and puts them aside (on the same drive). Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. Windows RE restores the data, settings, and apps it has set aside into the newly installed copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. Reset The PC boots into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Windows RE erases and formats the hard drive partitions on which Windows and personal data reside. Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. It is my understanding that Windows RE (Recovery Environment) is included as part of the System Reserved partition created by default on the first hard disk. The size of this partition has gone up to 350 MB from the 100 MB it used to be in Vista/Windows 7, no doubt as a result of adding these features. Now we have already discussed how to skip the creation of this System Reserved partition during Setup. Basically, the same techniques that used to work with Windows 7 work with Windows 8 as well. What I want to know is, what will be the exact repercussions of not having the System Reserved partition in place? I assume Troubleshoot / Advanced options should still be available as before: But what about the Troubleshoot menu itself? Will the Refresh and Reset options disappear? Will they remain but be unavailable? Or possibly they will throw an error if selected? Also, will it be possible to access and successfully execute these options if installation media is available? Anything else that might be affected?

• How do I find funny pictures?

  No, not lolcats. And I'm not really looking for a specific site, either. I have often wished that I had some funny picture to illustrate a presentation, a website, a post, an email, or something else. Google image search and stock photo services have hardly ever helped me, although that may be because I'm doing something wrong. Jeff Atwood seems to have no problem to find funny pictures for his codinghorror and stackoverflow blogs, as well as for the error messages on the trilogy sites. One of my favourites was this elephant. Other bloggers also seem to be quite good at it. I'm wondering if I simply lack the creativity or if there's sources or methods I don't know about. I could think of the following ways to get pictures, but I'm not sure whether this is really "how they do it". keep a collection of pictures that you stumbled upon and liked (takes quite some time to build up to a proper library), when you need a picture, there's one in there maybe have pictures on paper, too, like from magazines or ads. when you are looking for a picture, search online (Flickr, Google, stock photos). This has never really worked for me, I don't know why. produce the pictures yourself, i. e. have a good library of source material or find some online and apply some creativity and suitable software. I could imagine that this could work well once you have the practice.

• SQL transaction log backups conflicting with full backups?

  On our SQL servers (2000, 2005, and 2008), we run full backups once a day in the evening, and transaction log backups every 2 hrs. We haven't really worried about these two processes conflicting, but lately we've run into some of the following issues: On one server, the trans log backup occasionally blocks the full backup, and must be manually stopped before the full backup can complete We sometimes end up with a massively-sized trans log backup file (sometimes larger than the full backup!) that seems to occur at the same time the full backup is running. I found a reference that indicate that these are "not allowed" to run at the same time, whatever that means: SQL 2000 Books Online and SQL 2005 Books Online. I'm not sure whether that means that the server will simply prevent them from running simultaneously, or if we ought to be explicitly stopping the log backups while the full backups are running. So are there known conflicts/issues between these? Does the answer differ between SQL versions? Should I have the trans log backup job check to see if the full backup is running before it executes? (and how do I do that...?)

• Need help diagnosing my machine

  I have something that just slows my computer to a crawl sometimes. Not running anything big. Yesterday all I had running (besides background apps) were Firefox & Windows Explorer and could barely even switch screens. Nothing showing up in the task manager as hogging CPUs. I have all non-essential services stopped (MySQl & MSSQL) unless I need them. I made some restore points not long ago, but they disappeared. This is a development mach with a LOT of apps installed, so I really, really do not want to re-install Windows. So, what I'm looking for are ideas or tools I can use to help diagnose this problem. The only clues I have is this started right after I installed Office 2013 (with Office 2010 still installed as well) installed Visual Studio 2012 (also keeping 2010 as a co-install) and installed MSSQL 2012 (upgrade from 2008, no co-install) Also, computer runs fine in Safe Mode. I've just ran out of ideas of what to check. Any help / suggestions would much appreciated. Thanks P.S. I'm running Win 7 Pro (x64). Office is also 64 bit. Visual Studio & MSSQL are 64 bit if that option was available (not sure).

• Can gnome windows (in Ubuntu) be individually themed?

  (Yes, "individually themed" is an oxymoron, but I still want it.) I've just moved from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, and although I am enjoying this new adventure playground, I've encountered something quite unexpected... and its bugging me. It is probably because there are so many gnome apps in Ubuntu (... how strange :) This is great. and the range of available apps is excellent! ...but because of this one-stop-shop scenario, most of the windows look remarkably similar. I'm certainly not after bling-maximus, but I would like a few differentiating colours for my not-so-young eyes to help identify an app at a glance (especially in the compiz lists) ... I love compiz :) I thought it was just a bit of razzle-dazzle, and that alone would be enough, but it is actually very practical to boot. So, basically, I'm wondering if there is a way to theme individual window components on a per app basis... especially the window decoration; menu bar, etc. Thanks.

  Associating a file to a program should be easy in Windows. However, i find it rather difficult when I'm working on Windows 8. associating a file to a desktop application that I install on my computer is easy because the whole operation is entirely the same with that in the previous Windows releases. What I find rather difficult is associating a file to a Metro apps that I download from the store. So far, I have been using Multimedia 8 (a metro app) to open my video files. However, this app cannot handle particular files-like *.dat-that can be associated easily to desktop video applications, such as media player classic and the like. When I try to associate my DAT files to Multimedia 8, there is indeed a "look for another app on this PC" option at the bottom of the "open with" pop up. But alas, I cannot figure out how to locate my Multimedia 8 app to which I want to associate my DAT file (as well as other video files that are not yet associated to this metro app). If anyone of you knows how to locate those metro apps, please tell me. many thanks

• Outlook Shared Address book and contact not displaying

  We have a shared Exchange addressbook with distribution email groups. When someone connects to the shared addressbook, composes an email to a group, the email distribution list is empty, then the distribution list is expanded. In troubleshooting, I noticed that when we expand the distribution list to view the recipients, most of the recipients are missing and only semicolons appear. CLICK HERE FOR IMAGE Further troubleshooting, I notice that when I open the distribution list with my Outlook client and click on the Update Now icon, and then go to create the email then when I expand the group the email addresses now appear. CLICK HERE FOR IMAGE Now, my Outlook profile is a cached profile. The shared contact list that I pulled the distribution list from is an online/non-cached shared contact list. What I also found is that if I switched my Outlook client to be online only(not cached) the share address book lists appear properly when expanded. Is there any way to make this list appear correctly without having to click on update now for each and every distribution list in the shared contacts list we have on the server? I would really prefer that every time one wants to use this shared contact list, they do not have o click the update not button or switch from cached mode to make this work. T.I.A

• .NET 3.5 installation comes up with Error 0x800F0906, then 0x800F0081F using dism

  I've recently tried installing .NET 3.5 for an application on Windows 8.1. I used the OS's popup thing to download/install .NET 3.5 and always get error code 0x800F0906. Upon further research, I found I would have to pop in my Windows 8 CD and install it with this command, where "E:\" is where my CD is mounted: Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:E:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess This and any derivative of it (e.g., removing /LimitAccess) has not worked for me and has either given me the same error code (0x800F0906) or a different one, 0x800F0081F. I've even copied the sxs folder to my hard drive, just in case something was going on with the CD Drive, only to have the same results. In that case, I used this command line: Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:C:\dotnet35 /LimitAccess I find this surreal because in both cases, the files are indeed there but the program thinks it's not. Here's the CBS.log file. Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help is very appreciated :) EDIT: I now have a proper dism.log file, I'm not sure what happened to the last one or why it did that. Here's the link to the new log file. It's interesting to note that it doesn't recognize some of the commands in the script such as "featurename" or "source".

• Networking - intermittent, slow speeds

  Hi all I'm a novice when it comes to networking. I live in a large two storey building that used to be a school and we have an internet connection with BT (british telecoms provider), the connection speed is 12Mb.. Basically our connection is slow and very intermittent and I was wondering if anybody here could provide some help or ideas. There are about 11 people in the building who could be online at any time. We have a router on the ground floor which is bog standard supplied by BT. To provide Broadband access to the 1st and 2nd floors, we used an old switch that the school left, we have a cable running from the router on the first floor to the switch which connects to a wireless router which is configured as a bridge on the 2nd floor supplying broadband access to the 1st and 2nd floors. Additionally we have 3 computers that are connected via the switch through the ethernet sockets left by the school on the ground floor. The router we use on the 2nd floor came in a pack of 2 and cost about £15 (bought by another person). Sometimes the connection is perfectly fine, i.e. early hours of the morning or when everybody is out, we have rang BT who say that the connection cannot cope with the numbers of people online, plus I'm not sure whether each person is streaming etc. Can anybody offer any advice?

• ADO 2.8, VMWare and SQL Server - sudden bulk dropped connections

  We have an overworked server currently running a single SQL Server 2000 instance on physical hardware, and about 40 different apps interact with it on a daily basis. Last year, the RAID controller failed and we had no spare, so IT Support hurriedly migrated it overnight to a copy running on a VMWare Server. While it was on that server everything ran much quicker due to it being a big improvement in spec. However, the biggest app using it had occasional serious errors which never occurred on physical hardware. Specifically, several times a week it would disconnect batches of users - anywhere from just ten to hundreds at once, and all at the same time. It didn't affect any particular users or PCs or offices - all were affected equally. The only common thing was the app, which is a VB6 app using ADO 2.8 to connect. The other apps connecting to that virtualised instance of SQL Server seemingly had no problems, although they were (and are) responsible for only a tiny fraction of the work involving this server. The upshot is that after about two weeks of loving the speed and hating the random mass disconnections (which we were never able to find a cause for), we sadly took the decision to return to physical hardware and the disconnections vanished. Now we've reached the point where the old server just can't handle all that's being asked of it, and we're intending to migrate everything to 2 or more other servers. The snag is that there's a good chance they'll have to be virtual ones again. Given what happened last time, I'm trying to find out what possible reasons there could be for these mass disconnections. We were running VMWare ESX, but the network is Novell-based. Also, the server had a linked server setup to connect to an Informix server using a known-to-be-buggy ODBC driver, and this is used throughout the day. Any ideas on the cause(s)?

• Windows Media Based video audio converter?

  This may seem like an odd question. Right now ONLY windows media player, VLC and media player classic opens and plays my audio video correctly. Virtualdub plays it back with the wrong framerate and losses the audio, Avidemux 2.5 seems to be able to dump the audio/video but the video (like all other apps) is either a bad framerate or is wrong (glitches and bad framerate or bad dump). Nothing recognizes the audio file and when playing the video Avidemux (and most other things) die. FFMPEG cant seem to split the video or audio (using copy -an and etc) and this is getting me very angry. VLC dumps the video incorrectly when i try dumping it with that too. What can i use to convert the video? its streaming so it starts at 26mins in and ends at 28 (this is where apps have the problem. They dont know this and fudge everything or crash). I manage to dump the audio with Avidemux but virtualdub and ffmpeg says unreconized codec. Even if i cant convert it (it seems compressed enough) i want to at least attach it back into an AVI.

• Getting Windows (VMware) to load from OSX's localhost without an Internet Connection

  I'm using MAMP to host my local sites, and VirtualHostX so that I can access sites during local development via a convenient URL like mysite.dev I'm also running Windows XP via VirtualBox, and it would be great to be able to load up any of my local sites within windows while offline as currently often working without access, on the move, unfortunately. I know that I can append my IP and a nice domain name to the host file in C:/WINDOWS/system32/drivers/etc ... and i can find my IP simply through terminal with "ifconfig" while I'm online. The problem is that when I'm not online, there's no IP. Even if there is an IP (when i have a connection), I still have grab it and update the windows hosts' file all the time, since I'm developing from a laptop and have a new IP at the drop of a dime. I found a tutorial where the author is able to get a permanent IP. He uses VMware Fusion as his VMachine, which is the only difference between his setup and mine. By running the terminal command "ifconfig vmnet1" he gets: a secret IP the virtual machine uses to talk to OSX And that doesn't change - which is awesome. I'm assuming it exists even if he's offline. • Trying to understand Wireless N vs Wireless AC

  Whenever a new wireless standard gets approved you expect faster speeds and longer range. From everything that I've read about it, it seems that AC will only transfer over the 5GHz band and up to 3Gbps. Studying the new AC routers on the market, it seems that they will transfer over 5GHz and 2.4GHz. And 5GHz will only transfer at 1.3Gbps. Which isn't what AC is supposed to be. I know there is a difference between what the standard actually says, and what products will actually do, but is there any reason for this? Is there any other main differences between AC and N? I've heard people discussing AC and saying that it's finally "fixing" what N was supposed to fix... what do they mean by that? Any security benefits? I have seen this image online: Will AC really do that? Will that require an AC network card in my laptop for that to actually happen? Lastly, will the router only be able to communicate with AC devices if I have beamforming technology on? I know it's a ton of questions, but most articles online seem to be outdated, and don't provide too much reliability.

  I'm the digital guru in my household. My wife is good with email and forum websites but she trusts me with all our important digital stuff -- such as online banking and other things that require passwords, but also family photos and the plethora of other digital things in a modern home. We discuss relevant actions but it's always me that executes the actions. If I should get "hit by a bus" then my wife would be thoroughly stranded -- she would have no idea what digital stuff is where on our computer, how to access it, what online accounts we have, and their login credentials are. It would also leave my many public appearances (personal websites, email accounts, social networks, etc.) unresolved. To complicate things, I'm one of those people who don't use password as my password everywhere; I use a mix of SuperGenPass and LastPass, and also two-factor authentication whenever possible. I don't have much hope that she would find her way through a written explanation of all that in a stressful situation. • Ruby Passeger + Nginx or lighthttpi + fgci for shared hosting

  I have set up a passenger + nginx setup and I plan to offer a free non-commercial hosting (or in fact on the fly deployment) for rack-based frameworks (e.g. camping, sinatra). I am facing an "issue" with passenger. For each application you need to configure nginx.conf (it would be the same with apache so it is not an nginx issue) with: server { ... passenger_base_uri /app1; passenger_base_uri /app2; passenger_base_uri /app3; } Now this is not inherently bad as, in theory, I could allow a user to run just one app on his webspace but even in this case I need to create a new server directory on nginx e.g. (user.domain.com). As this will mainly be used to deploy apps the behavior I am looking at is more the possibility to auto map several apps (e.g. app1, app2, app3, app4) under the same server (your app.com/app1 yourapp.com/app2) without having to update the nginx or apache file each time. This seems to be a limitation in passenger. As such I am thinking about an alternative with lighttpd and fastcgi. Would this allow immediate deployment without touching the lighttpd config file e.g. I create a new directory with app2 and it will run immediately ? What is your experience in performance difference between passenger + nginx vs. lighttpd + fastcgi ? thanks in advance scenario details: on nginx + passenger - user cannot add a new sub-folder and run another sinatra/camping app without declaring the path on nginx.conf and restarting the server; wished behavior with the new setup: - user can add a new folder with a new app and it would run on lighttpd+fcgi without any extra configuration of the web server;

• 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). • postfix (for sending mail only) multiple domain setup

  I have the following problem, I have a Centos 5.4 VPS hosting a few nginx sites (some static, some cakephp), I would like to be able to send email from each sites contact page through postfix to my google apps hosted email (different accounts for each site) so that apps can then send out an auto email to the person filling in the contact form etc I have a bare-bones postfix installation with the following added into the main.cf config file. from using this guide virtual_alias_domains = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_alias_domains virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual_alias_maps (both of these files have been converted into db files using postmap) I have configured DNS correctly for each site and setup SPF records. (I'm aware R-DNS will still reference my actual hostname not the domain name and cause a possible spam issue but one thing at a time) I can telnet localhost and the helo localhost so that I can send a command line email from an address in the virtual_alias_domains to an email in the virtual_alias_maps file which seems sends without giving an error but it is sending to my local linux account not the email address specified. my question is am i approching this the wrong way in terms of the virtual alias mapping or is this even possible to do in the manner im trying. • How do I configure custom URL handlers on OS X?

  I've been reading a lot online about custom URL handlers / custom protocol handlers such as: Launching External Applications using Custom Protocols under OSX OS X URL handler to open links to local files I get that you can tell the system that a particular program is able to handle a certain scheme / protocol with the Info.plist file: <key>CFBundleURLTypes</key> <array> <dict> <key>CFBundleURLName</key> <string>Local File</string> <key>CFBundleURLSchemes</key> <array> <string>local</string> </array> </dict> </array> <key>NSUIElement</key> <true/> But if there are multiple applications that are capable of opening the same URL handler, such as mailto: how do you specify which one you want the system to use? There were some references to utilities like the More Internet preference pane which no longer seems to be available from the author's site. I did find it online by Googling but it seems a bit shaky - like it was written for an older OSX - perhaps Tiger. I haven't been able to find information on how to set the URL handler for protocols and custom protocols. I'm assuming there is a plist file somewhere that I can edit - or maybe there is a newer, better utility that works well with Mountain Lion?
