  • building a website

    Not sure if this is the right place to post this, or if it should be under programmers.stackexchange... Anywho, a couple of my friends run a business and they asked me to build them a public website. It will only be used for information about the company with soe pictures. No transactions will be involved. Right now I work for a company where I build internal websites, and do alot of backend programming in C#. I understand html, css, jquery, etc. so I feel like I am completely capable of building a website for them. However, I do not know all the basic knowledge to building one. For example, where should we host the files, what type of security issues do I need to be aware of, what's the best software to use for developing websites (I use visual studio at work), where can I find some design techniques, etc. Any help is appreciated.

  • Proxy object references in MVC code

    Hi there, I am just figuring out best practice with MVC now I have a project where we have chosen to use it in anger. My question is. If creating a list view which is bound to an IEnumerable is this bad practise? Would it be better to seperate the code generated by the WCF Service reference into a datastructure which essentially holds the same data but abstracts further from the service, meaning that the UI is totally unaware of the service implementation beneath. or do people just bind to the proxy object types and have done with it ? My personal feeling is to create an abstraction but this seems to violate the DRY principle.

  • Would it be faster to use CMS for building the first site in ASP.NET?

    I need an opinion and advise from experienced ASP.NET people, what way to go. Assuming that a developer has some practical background with HTML/JavaScript/PHP on one side and some .NET/C#/WPF experience on the other side. No previous hands on experience with ASP.NET - only theory and some read books on the topic. The task is to build ASP.NET web site with User Managment functionality (user authentication, user account, user buying history, user points and so on) and E-commerce functionality with shopping cart, checkout and all needed for this. Is it worth, i.e. will it be faster, more reliable and secure in the result to use a ASP.NET CMS system (for example Sitefinity from Telerik as declared developer friendly) to build such first site? In what case the learning curve will be more steep and it will take more time to achieve similar results? Notes to take into consideration: 1) Price of the CMS matters not very much 2) E-commerce module should be written from scratch in any case (and integrated in case of using CMS) due to very specific requirements

  • Completely remove ViewState for specific pages

    Hi everybody, I have a site that features some pages which do not require any post-back functionality. They simply display static HTML and don't even have any associated code. However, since the Master Page has a <form runat="server"> tag which wraps all ContentPlaceHolders, the resulting HTML always contains the ViewState field, i.e: <input type="hidden" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/wEPDwUKMjEwNDQyMTMxM2Rk0XhpfvawD3g+fsmZqmeRoPnb9kI=" /> I realize, that when decrypted, this string corresponds to the <form> tag which I cannot remove. However, I would still like to remove the ViewState field for pages that only display static HTML. Is it possible?

  • Dynamically loading jQuery library from a custom component and ensuring only one instance.

    Say I have a web component that uses jQuery and I want to distribute it as a packaged component. I need a way to ensure that the jQuery library is available on or after the page loads, but I also want to check that the containing html page, or another unknown component that may reference jQuery hasn't already added the library to the page. At the moment the best example I've seen is this http://www.squidoo.com/load-jQuery-dynamically It would need a little tweaking, but I was wondering if there were any other best practices.

  • C++: Platform independent game lib?

    Hi, I want to write a serious 2D game, and it would be nice if I have a version for Linux and one for Windows (and eventually OSX). Java is fantastic because it is platform independent. But Java is too slow to write a serious game. So, I thought to write it in C++. But C++ isn't very cross-platform friendly. I can find game libraries for Windows and libraries for Linux, but I'm searching one that I can use for both, by recompiling the source on a Windows platform and on a Linux platform. Are there engines for this or is this idea irrelevant? Isn't it that easy (recompiling)? Any advice and information about C++ libraries would be very very very appreciated!

I had heard that Adobe's FLEX was starting to become more in-demand, and have seen it increasingly on job postings. Has anyone else been successful (career wise) in learning FLEX?     I'm generating your typical Web 2.0 HTML page with PHP: it contains a lot of <script> tags and javascript code that will substantially change the DOM after the load event. Is there a way to get the final HTML code directly from PHP, without opening the page with any browser? For example, let's say the HTML for the page is (it's just an example): <html> <head> <script>...the jquery library code...</script> <script>$(document).ready(function() { $("body").append("<p>Hi!</p>");</script> </head> <body> </body> </html> This HTML is saved in the $html PHP variable. Now, I want to pass that variable to some function that will return $result = <html>....<body><p>Hi!</p></body></html>. Is this possible?

  • jQuery slideDown() Makes Everything in Wrapper Shift

    Hello everyone, I am currently creating a simple menu where there are several names of services and a user can click on one and jQuery will show it's corresponding paragraph describing it below it. My jQuery code is fine and does exactly what I want, however, I have one bug I have yet to iron out. Whenever I click one of these headings and it's description displays, everything in the wrapper for the page shifts to the left about 7 pixels in Firefox, it does the same thing is Google Chrome however I have not measured the amout but I am sure it is irrelevant. Anyways, I am using the slideToggle() command to show the hidden parragraph. I assume this is occuring because when the slideDown occurs it is somehow changing the width of everything and the "margin: 0 auto;" setting for the wrapper rule in my css is compensating for this change. Does anyone have any way I can remedy this problem? I have tried several other fixes I've found around the internet but to no avail.     We often see websites that display first few lines of an article and then append ... [More] so that people who are interested in can click on it to view the full article. To implement this functionality, we first need to find out where the article text should be cut to append the ... [More]. Since there must be some HTML/ CSS coupled with the article text, we must remember to ignore them when calculating the length of the text. But there is something I just can't figure it out, if more than one language is mixed in the first few lines of the article text, the length of the text will be very difficult to calculate since the characters can be of variable length. How should we solve this problem?
