• What is the best database for my needs?

  I am currently using MS SQL Server 2008 but I'm not sure it it is the best system for this particular task. I have a single table like so: PK_ptA PK_ptB DateInserted LookupColA LookupColB ... LookupColF DataCol (ntext) A common query is SELECT TOP(1000000) DataCol FROM table WHERE LookupColA=x AND LookupColD=y AND LookupColE=z ORDER BY DateInserted DESC The table has about a billion rows with 5 million inserted per day. My main problem with SQL Server is that it isn't too easy to shard or spread out the datafiles. Also, exporting seems to max out at 1000rows per second (about 1MB/s) which seems very slow. Another problem I have is, with SQL Server, if I want to add a new LookupCol the log file grows enormously requiring a large amount of rarely used free space on tap. Are there any obvious better solutions for this problem?

  What is the best resource for serious Commodore 64 programming? Assume that serious programming on the Commodore 64 is not done in BASIC V2 that ships with the Commodore 64. I feel like most of the knowledge is tied up in old books and not available on the internet. All that I have found online are either very beginner style introductions to Commodore 64 programming (Hello world), or arcane demo-coder hacks to take advantage of strange parts of the hardware. I haven't found a well-explained list of opcodes, memory locations for system calls, and general mid-level examples and tips. • Best way to retrieve certain field of all documents returned by a lucen search

  Hi, I was wondering what the best way is to retrieve a certain field of all documents returned by a Searcher of Lucene. Background: each document has a date field (written on) and I would like to show a timeline of all found documents, so I need to extract the date (day) field of all the documents I find with the search. I currently retrieve every document using Searcher.doc(int, FieldSelector) having the selector only retrieve the certain field. I have indexed 250k documents, the search itself takes no time and returns about 10k document ids. Retrieving those however, takes 20+ seconds. What can I do to speed things up, but still get all the values I need. Thx in advance Philipp

I would like some suggestions on what would be the best data structure for representing, on disk, a large data set of time series data. The main priority is speed of insertion, with other priorities in decreasing order; speed of retrieval, size on disk, size in memory, speed of removal. I have seen that B+ trees are often used in database because of their fast search times, but how about for fast insertion times? Is a linked list really the way to go?   So, with HTML5 giving us local SQL databases on the client side, if you want to write a select or insert, you no longer have the ability to sanitize third party input by saying $buddski = mysql_real_escape_string($tuddski) because the PHP parser and MySQL bridge are far away. It's a whole new world of SQLite where you compose your queries and parse your results with JavaScript. But while you may not have your whole site's database go down, the user who gets his/her database corrupted or wiped due to a malicious injection attack is going to be rather upset. So, what's the best way, in pure JavaScript, to escape/sanitize your inputs so they will not wreak havoc with your user's built-in database? Scriptlets? specifications? Anyone?

  Hello everyone :) I've got a series of filepaths that look something like this: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted C:\Windows\System32\svchost C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe /RunAsService "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe" /RunAsService and I need to find these paths' actual locations. So, respectively, the above would be: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Steam\SteamService.exe What's the best way to go about doing this? I'm wondering how do i design the best user interface that the user can localize data for various languages? for instance, in making a page which its title is different in every lang, do i put a textbox for every one? it's not a suitable way to do(in case of 10 lang, the user has 10 textbox!!! too silly) what is your idea about this? • Best CPUs for speeding up compiling times of C++ w/ DistGCC

  I'm putting together a distributed build farm with DistGCC to speed up our teams compile times and just looking for thoughts on which processors to use in the hosts. Are we going to get a noticeable decrease in time using 8 cores vs. 4-hyperthreaded cores? Big difference in time between i7 and Xeon? etc, etc. Just need advice from people who've put together kick-a build clusters. We've got a majority of the normal things to speed up builds in place (pre-compiled headers, ccache, local gigabit connections between them, tons of ram, etc) so please just give advice on the best processor to use. And money is a factor, but anythings doable if the performance increase is noticeable. Thanks. Jay

  Hello everybody, I've started recently to develop a new software in WPF, and I still don't know which is the best way to organize the application, to be more productive with Visual Studio and Expression Blend. I noticed 2 annoying things I'd like to solve: I'm using Code Contracts in my projects, and when I run my project with Expression Blend, it launches the static analysis of the code. How can I stop that? Which configuration of the project does Blend use by default? I've tried to disable Code Contracts in a new configuration. It works in VS as the static analysis is not launched, but it has no effects in Blend. I've thinked about splitting the Windows Application in 2 parts: the first one containing the views of the WPF (app.exe) and the second one being the core of the project, with the logic code (app.core.dll), and I would just open the former project in Blend.   What's the best value for money c# code protection? Some just use obfuscation, others add win32 wrapping, some cost a fortune. So far I've come up with http://www.eziriz.com/ who's Intellilock looks promising. Any other suggestions? Any reasons why this is not a good idea? I know its impossible to completely protect but I'd prefer the ability to protect my code so that it would require a lot of effort in order to recover it. I do hope to sell my products eventually, while also releasing some for free.

  I'm trying to find a good Java cms, I've stumbled uppon some that are quite good like: Apache Lenya, dotCMS, Info Glue, Open Edit, MMBase, Contelligent, Hippo CMS Which on do you guys recommend, or even one that I'm missing, because I have some more that I am studying at the moment. The requirements are that I can build modules for it with ease, and that it is open source and free, and with LDAP support. The problem is that I'm not that into Java in web, that's why I'm having trouble finding a good one. One Java cms like dotNetNuke would be the best. Edit: Jahia is off the list because it has no suport for LDAP (community version) Thanks!

  What is the best persistence API for use with GWT? Sadly, the application will be hosted on my own java server, as I will need more control than GAE will give me. I know I will need to have two sets of my entities, one for the server side, and some pojo's for the client side. I'm looking to make the mapping of the data as simple as possible between the two, but these will be deeply nested objects so it has to be robust. I was looking at Dozer for my mapping needs. Previously I've used EJB3 with TopLink, so that's very familiar to me, but I would like to get community input on what other API's work well with Dozer and GWT.

  What's the best way to externalize large quantities of HTML in a GWT app? We have a rather complicated GWT app of about 30 "pages"; each page has a sort of guide at the bottom that is several paragraphs of HTML markup. I'd like to externalize the HTML so that it can remain as "unescaped" as possible. I know and understand how to use property files in GWT; that's certainly better than embedding the content in Java classes, but still kind of ugly for HTML (you need to backslashify everything, as well as escape quotes, etc.) Normally this is the kind of thing you would put in a JSP, but I don't see any equivalent to that in GWT. I'm considering just writing a widget that will simply fetch the content from html files on the server and then add the text to an HTML widget. But it seems there ought to be a simpler way.
