• Ubuntu unattended-upgrades stops apache

  This morning i was alerted to the fact that both apache instances serving my app were not responding to requests from my load balancer. I attempted apachectl restart and it said apache was not running. So, i started apache on both instances and got the service up again. • Why does my terrain turn white when I get close to it?

  When I zoom in on my terrain it goes white: The further in I zoom, the greater the whiteness becomes. Is this normal? Is this to speed up rendering or something? Can I turn it off? I'm also getting these error messages in the console over and over again: rc.right != m_GfxWindow-GetWidth() || rc.bottom != m_GfxWindow-GetHeight() and GUI Window tries to begin rendering while something else has not finished rendering! Either you have a recursive OnGUI rendering, or previous OnGUI did not clean up properly. Does this bear any correlation on the issue? Update I create virtual desktops to flit between using the program Deskpot. Turning this program off and restarting has stopped the above errors appearing in the console. However, I still get white terrain when I zoom in. Not a single error message. I've restarted my computer to no avail. I have an Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB DDR5 Direct CU II OC Edition Graphics Card. Any known issues? Update I don't think it's fog...

• Limiting game loop to exactly 60 tics per second (Android / Java)

  So I'm having terrible problems with stuttering sprites. My rendering and logic takes less than a game tic (16.6667ms) However, although my game loop runs most of the time at 60 ticks per second, it sometimes goes up to 61 - when this happens, the sprites stutter. I also tried to change the timer used to Nanotime and skiptics to 1000000000/ticksPerSecond, but everything just ran at about 300 ticks per seconds. All I'm attempting to do is to limit my game loop to 60 - what is the best way to guarantee that my game updates never happen at more than 60 times a second? Please note, I do realise that very very old devices might not be able to handle 60 although I really don't expect this to happen - I've tested it on the lowest device I have and it easily achieves 60 tics. So I'm not worried about a device not being able to handle the 60 ticks per second, but rather need to limit it - any help would be appreciated.

• NTFS partitions mount as root instead of user as set in /etc/fstab

  I recently upgraded a server to Ubuntu 12.04 with a fresh install and my NTFS partitions won't mount as user at boot but I can mount them as user manually from the console with $ sudo mount -a. Using ntfsfix reports no problems and chkdisk sees nothing wrong under Windows 7. Are the drives not ready to be mounted at boot and default to root instead of user for some reason? • Why doesn't my sound card start? It reports code 10.

  When I installed the XP for first time my sound card was working fine. But only after the first reboot it has stopped working. Under Device Manager, the section "sound video and game controller" the entry YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver, has a exclamation mark on it. On left clicking and selecting properties it shows this message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". On trying to update driver it says a better driver can not be found. Any idea how I can solve the issue? Update: As suggested by harrymc I uninstalled the device "YAMAHA Native DS1 WDM Driver" , and scanned for hardware changes. The windows detected and installed the soundcard and it started working properly.BUT, after restarting the same problem occurs. So, now everytime I reboot the computer I am stuck to, repeating the process of uninstalling the device to make it work.

• How should I manage persistent score in Game Center leaderboards?

  Let's say that I'm developing an iOS RPG where the player gains 1 point per monster kill. The amount of monsters killed is persistent data: it is an endless adventure, and the score keeps on growing. It isn't a "session score" like Fruit Ninja, but rather a "reputation score". There are Game Center leaderboards for that score. Keep killing monsters, your score goes up, and the leaderboards are updated. My problem is that, technically, you can log out and log in using a different Game Center account, kill one monster, and the leaderboards will be updated for the new GC account. Supposing that this score is a big deal, this could be considered as cheating, because if you have a score of 2000, any of your friends who have never played the game can simply log into your iPhone, play the game, and the system will update the score for their accounts, essentially giving them 2000 points in the leaderboards for doing nothing. I have considered linking one GC account to a specific save game. It won't update your score unless you're using the linked GC account. But what if the player actually needs to change their GC account? Technically they would be forced to start a new game and link their account to that profile. How should I prevent this kind of cheat? Essentially, I don't want someone to distribute a high schore to multiple GC accounts, given the fact that the game updates the score constantly since it isn't a "session score". I do realize that it isn't quite a big deal. But I'm curious about how to avoid this.

  Windows CE is a 32 bits OS since day one, so it makes sense tools shipped with PB, compiler, linker, assembler and etc, are for targeting to 32 bits system. But occasionally, if you are developing x86 based system and especially working on some boot code, such as boot sector of BIOSLOADER, that will be a problem. Normally, as PB provides the prebuilt boot sector image but if you ever need to rebuilt it, what should you do? You may say as it's an x86, perhaps you can use VS or Windows SDK to build it. But unfortunately, today's desktop Windows tool chains are also 32 or even 64 bits only, you need to find something older. VC++ 6.0, but how can you find one? This Website http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/masm.htm arranges some useful resources. Basically, you need 2 thing, the 16 bits MASM and 16 bits linker. • Brand new Mac Pro tower fan suddenly runs full-tilt

  My Quad-Core Mac Pro tower is two days old. Initially, I was impressed with how quiet it was compared to my older Macbook Pro. Then on day two, for some reason it started running very loudly. It's not just a "little" loud- my wife walked into the room and asked what the noise was. At first I thought this was just because I was hitting the CPU a bit (importing my iPhone library into iLife '09, and running Eclipse). But now that that's done, Activity Monitor shows a virtually idle CPU; there's nothing running that ought to be causing this, as far as I can tell. I tried powering it off & letting it cool down for a few minutes to no avail; about 10 seconds after powering up, the box gets loud again. I took a look at it with the side cover off, and it seems to be the fan near the top middle, between the power supply and the disk drive. It can't be a dust issue, as the machine is only 2 days old (and I peeked inside anyway just to be sure- clean). I did do a software update over the past 24 hours or so, but I can't say that it occurred immediately after that. I also did a migration of my old apps and data from my MBPro, for what it's worth. Why is it suddenly so loud? How can I monitor the fan speed and various system temperatures? Here's a link to my temps and fan speeds. UPDATE 1: Took it to the Apple Store. They took it in the back (where it's presumably quieter) and ran a fan diagnostic; no problems were found. The guy also told me that it was "a little loud", but normal. I don't buy it. It was virtually silent the first 24 hours I was using it. They would not replace/service it in the store (grrr... that's why I went there, as directed by Apple Care) but said I could get a replacement from the online store, as it was just purchased. I think I will try that. UPDATE 2: Apple is letting me send it back for a replacement. Glad to see so many responses to this question mentioning that the MacPros are usually silent; it's not all just in my head. :-)

• How do I boot into console mode (redux)

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. This question was asked some time ago How do I disable the boot splash screen? but the answers didn't work for me. The standard way to boot into console mode used to be to edit /etc/default/grub and set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" This worked fine until I ran the fix proposed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in order to get sound to work. Since then, I have disabled the boot-splash-screen, but I can avoid what I presume is the lightdm login prompt screen. All I want to do is disable this gui and be prompted with a console login prompt. (Shouldnt be so hard should it???) I read in three 33416 mentioned above that there was a bug in lightdm (it wasn't recognizing "text" properly as an option for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.) But this discussion happened more than a year ago, and it's surely been fixed. Yet my lightdm is uptodate (so I'm told when I try to update it with apt-get). As suggested in one of the above, I tried sudo update-rc.d -f lightdm remove which resulted in a hung machine. I managed to recover using recovery mode, but now I still get the gui again. Another suggestion is to edit /etc/init/lightdm.override. I've done this and set it to "manual" as suggested, but lightdm simply ignores this. Could somebody suggest how to proceed please? • PHP MYSQL loop to check if LicenseID Values are contained in mysql DB [closed]

  I have some troubles to find the right loop to check if some values are contained in mysql DB. I'm making a software and I want to add license ID. Each user has x keys to use. Now when the user start the client, it invokes a PHP page that check if the Key sent in the POST method is stored in DB or not. If that key isn't store than I need to check the number of his keys. If it's than X I'll ban him otherwise i add the new keys in the DB. I'm new with PHP and MYSQL. • Boot disc isnt loading on MY system

  I am trying to update the firmware on my harddisk. I grabbed seagates windows setup tool which didnt boot into the app to update the firmware so I burned their iso image. Their ISO also doesnt boot and i vaguely remember something about windows not recognize my disc because of an EFI thing. It probably has nothing to do with it. Anyways, how do I boot into the disc? I tried going into advance options to boot directly to the disc and i get a blank screen. I can use ctrl+alt+del which reboot the system but other then that its blank and doesnt seem to load anything on the disc. The disc was a 7mb iso burnt using windows 7 built in iso burner (it suggest using it on seagates site). I have no idea what to do. Do any of you guys know what my problem may be? The media is DVD-R

• Visual Studio Continued Excitement

  As you know Visual Studio 2012 RTM’d and then became available in August (Soma’s blog posts told you that here and here), and the VS2012 launch was earlier this month (Soma also told you that here). Every time a release of Visual Studio takes place I am very excited, since this has been my development tool of choice for almost my entire career (from many years before I joined Microsoft). I am doubly excited with this release since it is the second version of Visual Studio that I have worked on and contributed major features to, now that I’ve been in the developer division (DevDiv) for over 4 years. Additionally, I am very excited about the new era that VS2012 starts with VSUpdate for continued customer value: instead of waiting for the next major version of VS to get new features, there is new infrastructure to enable friction-free updates. The first update will ship before the end of this year, and you can read more about it at Brian’s blog post. I also noticed that a CTP of the first quarterly update is available to download here. In the last two months, the VS2012 family of products we all worked on in DevDiv shipped, coinciding with the end of the Microsoft financial/review year, and naturally followed by a couple of organizational changes (e.g. see Jason’s blog post)… On a personal level, this meant that I was very lucky to have an opportunity present itself to me that I simply could not turn down, so I grabbed it! • Connecting a Samsung Galaxy S3 in Ubuntu 13.04

  In 13.04, whenever I connect an Android device, one of three things happens: 1 . It mounts successfully (maybe once out of 3 attempts) 2 . It fails to mount with the following error message: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Unable to open MTP device 3 . This one occasionally happens: Unhandled error message: No such interface `org.gtk.vfs.Mount' on object at path /org/gtk/vfs/mount/1 Regardless of activity (even when successfully mounted) it will continuously spam the following error message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG_Android Unable to open MTP Device '[usb:003,00x]' where x seems to be an arbitrary number below 10 and continues counting up with each new error message until the device is unplugged. I've also just noticed that even if it mounts successfully, it unmounts after about 30 seconds and starts spamming the error message above. The Android device is unlocked, always on and fully charged. ADB seems to function normally. Any suggestions? Further info: this happens on both a stock Samsung S3 and an Xperia Arc S running a custom AOSP based ROM. I've also tried the steps outlined in this Stack Overflow answer, but the problem persists. UPDATE: After doing a dist-upgrade (May 8th 2013), the Xperia Arc S on AOSP ROM now mounts and behaves normally. The S3, however, still behaves as described above. UPDATE: After careful observation, ABD does not, in fact, behave normally. If the error message above appears while sending an app to the device, the attempt is aborted with an error message saying that the device is unavailable.

• SLI Artifact issues

  When I enable SLI I keep getting artifacts in random games and in Windows Aero sometimes . It doesn't seem to be about over-heating as it happens randomly, and sometimes whole computers just crashes (not blue-screen, just black gone...) My setup: Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB ( http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr88512gtoce.aspx ) x 2 GIGABYTE EX58-UD4 Windows 7 RC PSU 800W I've got the latest NVIDIA drivers and F5 BIOS update (*SLI update*). When I disable SLI and use the cards separately they are working just fine even in games. Any idea why this might happen?

• Screen Resolution stuck at 640x480 after installing Bumblebee

  I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop. As you can see here, there are some issues with NVidia drivers. The site recommends installation of Bumblebee (instructions given in the link). I am posting it again for ease: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade $ sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia $ sudo usermod -a -G bumblebee $USER After restarting the computer however, the screen resolution was stuck at 640x480 and I got the following error message as soon as I logged in: **Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors** none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes: Trying modes for CRTC 63 CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 63: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Trying modes for CRTC 64 CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 0) CRTC 64: trying mode 640x480@60Hz with output at 1366x768@60Hz (pass 1) Prior to the update, the display was absolutely normal and thus there is no doubt about the cause. Albeit, there was no support for graphic drivers. In case it helps, some features of graphics drivers seem to be functional after bumblebee, ie, all features are in order except for the resolution. And if the resolution can't be fixed, please suggest a way to retract the changes so that atleast the prior state may be reachieved. Any help in the matter would be highly appreciated.

• Using json as database with EF, how can I link EF and the json file during DbContext initialization?

  For a personal testing-project I am considering to create a SPA with the following technologies: ASP.NET MVC + EF + WebAPI + AngularJS. The project will make use of small amount of data, so I was thinking I could use just a .json file as storage. But I am not sure about how to proceed with the link between EF and the json file in the initialization of the DbContext. I found a stackoverflow related question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13899342/can-we-use-json-as-a-database I know the basics of edit files and store data inside. What I tried is to get the data from the json file in the initilizer method and create the objects one by one. This is more a doubt about how this works if I save/update an object in the dbcontext, do I need to go through all the elements and add/update it manually? Is it better to rewrite the complete file? According to this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7895335/append-data-to-a-json-file-with-php it is not a good practice to use json/XML for data wich will be manipulated. Anyone has experience with anything similar? Is this a really bad idea and I should use another kind of data-storage?
