• Concurrency with listeners and upload: is this solution sound?

  I'm working on an Android app. We have listeners for position data and camera capture which is timed on a background thread (not a service). The timer thread dictates when the image is captured and also when the data is cached in a local sqlite db. So, my question is how to properly store the location data as it comes in based on the listeners and pull that data so that the database can be updated as the camera capture is executed. I can't put the location data into the database as it arrives because it is processed more frequently than the camera images and the camera images are what dominates the architecture at the moment. (Location data is supplement). However I need the location data to get a rough location of the where the image is captured. My first thought was to have singleton store the location data. And have a semaphore on the getInstance method so if the database update is happening (after an image is captured) we don't have an error. The location data can wait for the database update or it can be lost for that particular event it doesn't really matter. What are you thoughts? Am I on the right track? (And is this the right sub-site or would this be better on stackoverflow?)

• Which language is more suitable heavy file tasks?

  I need to write a script (based on basic functions) to process /image/audio/video files. The process is mainly filesystem tasks and converts. The database of files has been stored by mysql. The script is simple but cause heavy tasks on the system; for example renaming/converting/copying thousands of file in a run. The script does not read the content of files into memory, it just manage the commands for sub-processes. The main weight is on the communication with filesystem. The script will be used regularly for new files. My concern is about performance. I am thinking of Shell script a complied language like C Please advise which programming language is more suitable for this purpose and why? UPDATE: An example is to scan a folder for images, convert them with ImageMagick, move files to destination folder, get file info, then update the database. As you can see, the process has no room for optimization, and most of languages have similar APIs for popular programs like ImageMagick, MySQL, etc. Thus, it can be written in any language. I just wish to reduce resource usage by speeding up the long loop. NOTE: I know that questions about comparing languages are not favorable, but I really had problem to choose, because the problems can appear in action.

• HTC Android device mounted as USB drive is read-only unless I'm root

  When I connect my HTC Incredible S to my Ubuntu 10.10 system as a USB drive, the device seems to mount OK, but is read-only unless I access it as root. For example, if I run nautilus, I can't drag and drop files to the SD-card in the phone, but if I run sudo nautilus I can. I have USB debug support set on the phone (Applications > Development > USB debugging) and I have added a rule for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules on my Ubuntu system. Any suggestions as to how I can mount the drive so that I can copy content to the SD card without needing to sudo? Update Following advice from waltinator, I added the following line to my /etc/fstab: UUID=3537-3834 /media/usb1 vfat rw,user,noexec,nodev,nosuid,noauto However, the Android device is still being auto-mounted on /media/usb1 with uid and gid root. • Simple collision detection for pong

  I'm making a simple pong game, and things are great so far, but I have an odd bug which causes my ball (well, it's a box really) to get stuck on occasion when detecting collision against the ceiling or floor. It looks as though it is trying to update too frequently to get out of the collision check. Basically the box slides against the top or bottom of the screen from one paddle to the other, and quickly bounces on and off the wall while doing so, but only bounces a few pixels from the wall. What can I do to avoid this problem? It seems to occur at random. • Change install path to /usr/bin instead of /usr/local/bin

  A simple question, but I have no concrete documentation to confirm my answer. When installing software with the make install command under a unix machine, the default path is going over to /usr/local/bin. I would like to update a package system-wide under /usr/bin. How (and where) do I change the command under make or make install to /usr/bin? Also - Can the package remain on /usr/local/bin but the systemwide usage of Python (the update being installed) be changed to /usr/local/bin from /usr/bin to avoid modifying the original installed version ?

• Printer Problems: Snow Leopard with Epson CX 4200 - worked and then didn't?

  We got a new laptop in the office with Snow Leopard. We installed the new driver for the Epson CX 4200 printer we have and it seemed to be working okay. However, after an Apple update, the printer stopped working. A few days later we saw an update for the Epson driver and so we downloaded and installed that. However, the printer still isn't working. We plugged and unplugged the printer power cable and usb cable, and also tried replacing the ink (because the colour ink light was blinking)...however the printer still isn't working?

• Thinkpad Bluetooth turns itself on upon restart/hibernate

  I have a T400 with Windows 7 64bit. About 3 weeks ago, the Lenovo update pushed a Bluetooth update that added a 2.1 driver and device experience. Since then, my bluetooth turns itself on whenever the OS comes up (full restarts as well as waking from hibernation). I can turn it of using the <Fn>+<F5> Radio menu, but it just turns itself on again the next time. If I forget to turn it off, it just eats my battery that much faster.I've been scouring the web and couldn't find similar occurrences. Is this a hardware issue, a BIOS issue (although no reference to BT in any of the BIOS menus), a driver issue or (shudder) a user issue? Thanks for your help.

• Dreamweaver CS5 Test server works but cannot connect to host server through files window

  I've been managing this site for a long time and update coupons on it approximately every 60 days. For some reason, I'm not having problems: I opened DW CS5 today and made the changes necessary to update coupons. I was able to connect to the host server with no problem but most of my coupon images were not showing up. DW tells me I have 70 broken links, which can't be the case because I've reviewed them. Some links work and are the same as the broken links other than the file name. Unable to figure it out, I thought maybe restarting my Mac would help. However, upon logging back into DW, I am now unable to connect to the host server. I get an FTP error notice that the file doesn't exist or there is a permissions problem. Funny thing is, I can connect successfully if I test the connection through the Site Management window. I have connected to my host server through FileZilla and see all the files there, unfortunately, I still can't get the web pages to display the coupons. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, what is the solution? I feel like this is probably a simple fix, but I cannot for the life of me determine what it is! If anyone knows a solution, I'd really appreciate the help! -Toni

• Is there any way to limit my Internet connection to a per program basis?

  My Linux connection is REALLY free. I live in Brazil, so where I live I can only have 1 Mbit/s. Yes I know it's sad, but it's not the point. Everytime I'm updating my Ubuntu 9.04 or downloading something, it does eat all my bandwidth. Like, while update-manager is downloading the packages, I can see by netspeed applet in my panel that the incoming traffic goes to 110 kB/s. And then, my Emesene suddenly goes disconnected, and I can't navigate. As you can imagine, I can't use my Internet connection again until the packages are all downloaded or I cancel the update in the middle. As I said, same thing happens when I'm dowloading something, but less intrusive and immediate. The question is: is there any way to limit that APT/downloads traffic to some way I can still use my other Internet services, or to reserve some bandwidth for common navigation tasks (like we have on Windows, but I forgot this thing's name, it's like "something packages".

  Moooooooo     For a while now we’ve been using Apple’s enterprise device app distribution mechanism.   This allows you to have a user, click on a URL on their iOS device and it pulls down a new version of an enterprise app. of of our servers. Its really nice,  have a look at - http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Wireless_Enterprise_App_Distribution/Introduction/Introduction.html   I’ve embedded this, into a check on application launch, that a web-service is called to detect a newer version of the software is available.  It then calls the URL to the App and a new version is deployed. You can alert users that a new App update is available by sending them a push notification.  See screenshot at the top. We send our push notifications out to users,  using a simple C# service.    The fun part is this.   You can instruct the push notification to play a sound (embedded in the app already). So our push notification’s play a random farmyard noise, i.e from a selection of - cow.wav dogbrk.wav duck.wav goose.wav horse.wav lamb.wav monkey.wav – left field I know rooster.wav Imagine my amusement being able to periodically send out an update and watch our office (of about 60 people) turn into farm for a few seconds. • Automatically updating routing table on server

  I have a LAN with three routers on it, one connected to the Internet, one VPN router connected to a few remote sites, and a final route connected to a private network (using BGP to get prefix advertisements). On the same LAN I have multiple Linux servers which needs access to the networks behind each router. I have achieved this by configuring static routes on the server, pointing the different network prefixes to the correct router. This has worked well, but every time we connect to a new remote VPN, we have to change all the servers to be aware that the network is now accessible via the VPN, and not via the default Internet route. What I want is a way to automatically update the routes on all of the servers, when the route is added to a routers. Now, I could install Quagga or something similar on all the servers to receive router advertisements, but that seems like overkill. So my question is what is the easiest/simpliest way to update the routing tables on the server automatically, and what protocol is best suited for this purpose. thanks

• Cannot terminate proces: access is denied

  Skype and Spotify remain active after I close them. When I try to close them via Task Manager Details End Task, I get the following error: The operation could not be completed. Access is denied. So I have to reboot to get rid of these programs or to log in to Skype again. Also, running a CMD as administrator and executing taskkill /f /im skype.exe results in an Access is denied error. What is going on? (this is Windows 8 RTM x64) update I have to kill skype.exe because it crashed and when I restart skype, I get the following error: It says: Could not open Skype, you are already signed in on this computer. update 2 The process is owned by my own username.

  If I login on my Ubuntu 14.04, I get the following desktop: This weird behavior appeared after I executed sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted my computer. Don't know why though. I mean - when I have 100 account's (customers) in CRM I want to export this account's to SharePoint Online like a list. And when I will bed edited account in CRM the elements in the list will be update (and when I edited element on SharePoint list it will update in CRM). Is there any possibility to connect in this way? If if what I should use - SharePoint Designer 2010, Visual Studio or do this on web interface?

• DPKG errors after upgrade to 12.10

• What is auto-mounting my media volume?

  Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills.
