• how to link static library into dynamic library in gcc

  Under gcc (g++), I have compiled a static .a (call it some_static_lib.a) library. I want to link (is that the right phrase?) this .a file into another dynamic library (call it libsomeDyn.so) that I'm building. Though the .so compiles, I don't see content of .a under .so using nm command: /usr/bin/g++ -fPIC -g -O2 -Wall -Werror -pipe -march=pentium3 -mtune=prescott -MD -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DLINUX -D_GNU_SOURCE -D_THREAD_SAFE -DUSE_STD_YUTSTRING -DNO_FACTORY -I../../../../../../../../ -I../../../../../../../..//libraries -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib -o libsomeDyn.so some.o another.o some_static_lib.a -shared -Wl -x -Wl,-soname,libsomeDyn.so I do not see functions under some_static_lib.a under libsomeDyn.so. What am I doing wrong?

• JavaScript using toString on a Function object to read text content

  Calling toString() on the function below returns different strings across browsers. I understand this is because ECMA-262 15.3.4.2 leaves wiggle room for each vendor. Chrome returns the comments in addition to all syntax. Sadly Firefox 3.6 omits the comments. Based on Firefox's behavior I haven't tested IE, Opera, or Safari. function foo() { /* comment */ var bar = true; } Specifically, I am attempting to embed meta data within a specially formatted comment block within a function. Later the return value of the functions toString() method would be parsed and values returned as an object. I've been unable to locate compatibility tables or alternatives to toString(). Does the community have any ideas? Btw, pre-processing JS files isn't an option. :( Thanks a lot. :)

• How? Encrypt and Decrypt user membership passwords in ASP.NET

  We are creating a new site using ASP.NET membership provider for user registration and log in. Our old system encrypted user passwords so that we could recover them if we needed to. I am having a great deal of trouble figuring out if it is possible to use ASP.NET membership functions to simply encrypt the password when the user registers and then unencrypt it so I can see it. Documentation for this is neigh non-existant. I know how to configure Web.config to have it store passwords as encrypted ala passwordFormat="Hashed" in the provider and assigning a validationKey in the machineKey, however it seems like the password still gets hashed (though perhaps it is just well encrypted). Either way I cannot decifer how the password can be recovered (by us) if neccessary. Thanks!

• C++ setTimout function ?

  What's the cheapest way for a JavaScript like setTimeout-function in C++? I would need this: 5000 miliseconds from now, start function xy (no parameters, no return value). The reason for this is I need to initialize COM for text to speech, but when I do it on dll attach, it crashes. It works fine however if I do not call CoInitialize from dllmain. I just need to call CoInitialize and CoCreateInstance, and then use the instance in other functions. I can catch the uninitialized instance by checking for NULL, but I need to initialize COM - without crashing.

  Hello, I have a question related to correct handling of returns of the DAO library I'm writing for one project. This library probably is going to be used by another people and I want to do it correctly. So I would like to know, how I should deal with return statements of the functions of my DAO. Example 1 I have function to getCustomer which should return String. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty string or throw some kind of Exception? Example 2 I have function getCutomerList which return ArrayList. In case query doesn't return any result should I return null, empty ArrayList or throw some Exception? Example 3 Some sql exception was detected, what should I do: throw exception or do try..catch of the block where it can occur? What is the "good" practice or "best" practice to apply in my case?   Here is what I would like to do. Say I have Class Widget. I then create Button from Widget. I then create ModifiedWidget which re-implements certain functions of Widget. I then want Button to use ModifiedWidget rather than plain Widget. Is this possible to do some how? • How to overload shutdown function?

  I am using Kohana (v3) framework but I believe it's not tied to a particular framework. What I have is basically an app with a front-end, where I want to use Kohana's native Kohana::shutdown_handler(), but I also have a part of the - RESTful API - where I don't want colourful and html-encoded exception reporting. I want a plain text reporting. The way I thought it might work is to register another shutdown function in API's controller abstract class constructor, but then I realised register_shutdown_function() works differently to set_exception_handler() and instead of replacing it adds another function to the shutdown procedure. What's worse PHP doesn't allow "unregistering" shutdown functions and that's where my problem lies. What to do, if you want to use another shutdown function instead of one already registered?

• Are there any context-sensitive code search tools?

  I have been getting very frustrated recently in dealing with a massive bulk of legacy code which I am trying to get familiar with. Say I try to search for a particular function call, I get loads of results that turn out to be completely irrelevant; some of them are easy to spot, eg a comment saying // Fixed functionality in foo() so don't need to handle this here any more But others are much harder to spot manually, because they turn out to be calls from other functions in modules that are only compiled in certain cases, or are part of a much larger block of code that is #if 0'd out in its entirety. What I'd like would be a search tool that would allow me to search for a term and give me the choice to include or exclude commented out or #if 0'd out code. Then the search results would be displayed alongside a list of #defines that are required in order for that snippet of code to be relevant. I'm working in C / C++, but other than the specific comment syntax I guess the techniques should be more generally applicable. Does such a tool exist?

  Dear experts, I would like to implement a API of Javascript that sort of resemble a light switch. For instance, there are two buttons on the actual HTML page act as the UI. Both of the buttons have event handlers that invokes a different function. Each function have codes that act like a state, for instance. button1.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //code effects 2 ) } button2.onclick=function (){ $("div").click( //Code effects 2 ) } I the code works fine on the surface but the 2 state functions overlap. the effects is going to take place for the rest of the way until the next reload of the document. Basically what I want to achieve is that when 1 button is clicked, it will switch "OFF" the state of function invoked by the other button and vice versa. Thus, the effects achieved are unique are not overlapped. Is there anyway to achieve this or could any experts point me to the right direction. Thanks in advance.

• Ways to optimize Android App code based on function call stack?

  I've been told that Android OS stores all function calls in a stack. This can lead to many problems and cause the 'hiccups' during runtime, even if a program is functionalized properly, correct? So the question is, how can we prevent this from happening? The obvious solution is to functionalize less, along with other sensible acts such as refraining from excessively/needlessly creating objects, performing static calls to functions that don't access fields, etc... Is there another way though? Or can this only be done through careful code writing on the programmers' part? Does the JVM/JIT automatically optimize the bytecode during compile time to account for this?? Thanks a lot for your responses!!

  let's rope I can make this non-sujective Here's the thing: Sometimes, on fixed-typed languages, I restrict input on methods and functions to positive numbers by using the unsigned types, like unsigned int or unsigned double, etc. Most libraries, however, doesn't seem to think that way. Take C# string.Length. It's a integer, even though it can never be negative. Same goes for C/C++: sqrt input is an int or a double. I know there are reasons for this ... for example your argument might be read from a file and (no idea why) you may prefer to send the value directly to the function and check for errors latter (or use a try-catch block). So, I'm assuming that libraries are way better designed than my own code. So what are the reasons against using unsigned numbers to represent positive numbers? It's because of overflow when we cast then back to signed types?

The code looks like this: var GlobalVar1 = ""; var GlobalVar2 = null; function A() {...} function B(SomeParameter) {...} I'm using the google compiler and the global variables and functions get renamed a,b,c... and there's a good change that there might be some collision later with some outside code. What I want to do is have my code organized like the jquery library where everything is accessible with $. Is there a way to namespace my code so that everything is behind a # character for example. I'd like to have this to call my code: #.GlobalVar #.functionA(SomeParameter) How can I do this? Thanks.

  Hello guys, at the moment I'm really interested in expression templates and want to code a library for writing and differentiating mathematical functions with a lambda-style syntax. At the moment, I'm able to write (_x * _x)(2); and get the correct result 4. But I would really like to do something like MathFunction f = _x * _x; f(2);, but I don't have any ideas on how to cope with the recursive expression templates on the right side. • Reordering Lists like playlists in the media player

  Hi, I have a list of items that are displayed using a ListView from a SQLCursor. The SQL table includes(as well as other things) a _id field and an order field. I use the order field to sort the list before it gets to the ListView. What I need is a widget like the MediaPlayer has in its playlist view. It allows you to click the icon and drag the item in the playlist around and put it into a new order. With that ability I can then retrieve the new order and update the SQL table with the new order. However, I am not having any luck finding any clues to help me add that functionality into my program. The question is whether I can use existing functions to help me, or do I need to manually program motion events and such until I get nearly the same functionality.

• Best way to handle MySQL date for performance with thousands of users

  I am currently part of a team designing a site that will potentially have thousands of users who will be doing a number of date related searches. During the design phase we have been trying to determine which makes more sense for performance optimization. Should we store the datetime field as a mysql datetime. Or should be break it up into a number of fields (year, month, day, hour, minute, ...) The question is with a large data set and a potentially large set of users, would we gain performance wise breaking the datetime into multiple fields and saving on relying on mysql date functions? Or is mysql already optimized for this?

It covers the whole range of data warehousing and BI functions with: an OLAP environment an ETL tool a report writer (called Application Studio) an add-on to Excel to connect to the data in the cubes through a pivot table etc Does anyone have any experience with using this package? How does it compare to the big players in BI (Cognos, Microsoft SSAS, Business Objects, etc). Any pitfalls I should know about? On the other hand, does it do anything better than its competitors?

• Codeigniter error logs show a 404 non-existing images directory...need to worry?

  I've recently started logging my errors through codeIgniter. Since doing so, I have noticed a lot of 404 errors for directories that don't exist. For example: ERROR - 2010-05-15 21:06:26 -- 404 Page Not Found -- someController/images Where someController is, obviously, a controller. The problem is, there are no functions within that controller called images, nor are there any links to a directory by that name. Could this be that someone is trying to hack my site? • Should I start with Trac 0.12 ?

  I'm going to start using Trac for the first time. From what I've gathered, the latest 0.12 is capable of supporting multiple project easily (which is something I will need since I got about 5 projects). However, it seems 0.12 is still in the development (0.12-dev). So, my question is, is it good enough for a newbie in Trac like me to use it? Does anyone has any experience using it ?   This seems really simple, but how do I call a javascript function that's defined in the top-level html, from a child frame? top html doc - 1st level frame - 2nd level frame my top html doc has a function called testFn(). In the 2nd level frame I have a button with onclick="top.testFn();" but this doesn't call the testFn(). In Firebug if I use a watch to execute top.testFn(); it says TypeError: testFn() is not a function. Should this all just work - in which case it's a problem with my documents, or is there some other way to call functions in the top-level window?

  Hi there, i have a problem understanding how this could/should be solved. I have two functions. In the first function ( I call it loadData() ) I'm doing an asyncronous request to the server to load some data. In the second function ( saveData() ) I'm also doing an asyn request to the server to write some data. In the callback of this request I'm callin loadData() to refresh the data. Now the problem: In the saveData() function I want to wait for loadData() to be finished bevore I show a dialog (like alert('Data saved')) I guess this is a common problem, but I couldn't find the solution for it (if there is one..) A solution would be to make the requests syncronous, but the framework I'm using doesn't offer that and I hope there's a better solution.. Thanks to all!
