  Excuse my ignorance, as I'm not a computer engineer but with roots in biology. I have become a great fan of pre-allocating objects (kudos to SO and R inferno by Patrick Burns) and would like to improve my coding habits. In lieu of this fact, I've been thinking about writing more efficient functions and have the following question. Is there any benefits in removing variables that will be overwritten at the start of the next loop, or is this just a waste of time? For the sake of argument, let's assume that the size of old and new variables is very similar or identical.

  Hey there, So I'm knocking together a random pattern generation thing. My code so far: int permutes = 100; int y = 31; int x = 63; while (permutes > 0) { int rndTurn = random(1, 4); if (rndTurn == 1) { y = y - 1; } //go up if (rndTurn == 2) { y = y + 1; } //go down if (rndTurn == 3) { x = x - 1; } //go right if (rndTurn == 4) { x = x + 1; } //go left setP(x, y, 1); delay(250); } My question is, how would I go about getting the code to not go back on itself? e.g. The code says "Go Left" but the next loop through it says "Go Right", how can I stop this? • How to properly close a process with NppExec?

  I'm not sure what's going on here, but the following code continues running even after I end the process in the NppExec console with Ctrl-C (during the execution of the while loop). I restarted my computer to stop the Ctrl key sends. • Looping an executable to get the result from Python script

  In my python script, I need to call within a for loop an executable, and waiting for that executable to write the result on the "output.xml". How do I manage to use wait() & how do I know when one of my executable is finished generating the result to get the result? How do I close that process and open a new one to call again the executable and wait for the new result? import subprocess args = ("bin/bar") popen = subprocess.Popen(args) I need to wait for the output from "bin/bar" to generate the "output.xml" and from there, read it's content. for index, result in enumerate(results): myModule.callSubProcess(index) #this is where the problem is. fileOutput = open("output.xml") parseAndStoreInSQLiteFileOutput(index, file)

• Determing Python version at runtime

  The problem I'm having is that I've written code that depends on features in python2.6 so I'm trying to build a check that will produce a useful error if someone tries to run it on a machine with python lower than 2.6. The code I put in to check for the specific version and match it should work fine but the problem I have is the interpreter on a 2.4 machine reads the file and sees a "finally" at the end of my try loop and errors out before it gets far enough into execution for my if statement to handle the version mismatch. Other than changing the magic line to specifically look for /usr/bin/python2.6 is there a way python can handle this sort of thing?

• Will news ticker using overflow:hidden cause Google to see site as spam?

  In the hope of tempting Googlebot with fresh content, I've implemented a homepage news ticker which displays the 20 most recent headlines on our site. The implementation I have chosen is a <ul> with each headline being a <li> Initially all the <li> elements have no style but Javascript kicks in on page load and gives all but one of them a display="style:none" attribute. Javascript then displays each of the other 19 headlines in a loop. So far so good. However, in order to prevent a visually unplesant page load where the 20 items display and then immediately collapse, I am using overflow:hidden on the <ul> element. Anyone got a view on what Googlebot is likely to make of this? Does the fact that I'm using overflow:hidden make the content look like spam?

• IE8 blocking JavaScript Cookies

  Hey there folks, Here is one that is throwing me for a loop. I am trying to set a simple cookie that has one name:value pair on IE8. Tested on FF and it works fine. IE8 keeps blocking it. I have read about the P3P stuff and created a basic P3P doc, no errors reported by the IBM tool, and added the following on all pages: <meta http-equiv="P3P" CP="CAO DSP COR PSDa CONi TELi OUR STP COM NAV"><link rel="P3Pv1" href="/w3c/p3p.xml"></link> The code I use to set the cookie is as follows: function setCompatibilityCookie(c_name, value, expiredays) { var exdate = new Date(); exdate.setDate(exdate.getDate() + expiredays); document.cookie= c_name + "=" + escape(value) + ((expiredays==null) ? • Efficient calculation of matrix cumulative standard deviation in r

  I recently posted this question on the r-help mailing list but got no answers, so I thought I would post it here as well and see if there were any suggestions. I am trying to calculate the cumulative standard deviation of a matrix. I want a function that accepts a matrix and returns a matrix of the same size where output cell (i,j) is set to the standard deviation of input column j between rows 1 and i. NAs should be ignored, unless cell (i,j) of the input matrix itself is NA, in which case cell (i,j) of the output matrix should also be NA. I could not find a built-in function, so I implemented the following code. Unfortunately, this uses a loop that ends up being somewhat slow for large matrices. Is there a faster built-in function or can someone suggest a better approach? cumsd <- function(mat) { retval <- mat*NA for (i in 2:nrow(mat)) retval[i,] <- sd(mat[1:i,], na.rm=T) retval[is.na(mat)] <- NA retval } Thanks.

  First here's the code: <?php $qty = $_GET['qty']; for($i=0; $i < $qty; $i++) { setcookie('animals', $_COOKIE['animals'].'(lion)', time()+3600); } ?> Here's what I'm trying to do: I want to set the value of the "animals" cookie to "(lion)". The number of instances of "(lion)" that should be in the cookie is determined by the "qty" GET parameter's value. So for example if the pages url is: http://site.com/script.php?qty=10 then the value of the cookie should be: (lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion) but now it just sets the value once despite the setcookie function being inside the loop, why isn't it working?

• Entities Framework 4 doing a bulk delete

  I wish to know if there is a good way to do a bulk delete or delete multiple rows using the Entities Framework 4. I can't seam to find a DeleteAll command. The only one that is available is DeleteObject() which only takes one entity, I would like to perform a delete on a list of entities.Is there a better way than to loop trough the list? I did see an article that used ExecuteStoreQuery and created some sql that would perform the delete. Is there a better way than to perform any of these two options Please advice what is the best way to perform this action.

  I am trying to write a jQuery plugin, that can be applied to a selector. Within this plugin, there are multiple calls to webservices, where callback methods are required. The problem I am having is maintaining the current context item in the each loop of the selector. (function($){ $.fn.myMethod = function(){ return this.each(function(){ var c = $(this); $.api.methodToCall("", CallbackFunction); }); }; function CallbackFunction(data, result){ // do stuff based on c } })(jQuery); Normally, you would provide the callback function straight away, which allows me to access c, however within the callback function, there potentially is another api call, so it would start to get messy. Is there any way to do this?

• Online Image Slideshow Question. File Access Problems.

  Hi, I have a flash .swf file that I embed on my webpage. On my server I have the .swf file and multiple image folders. I would like to load every file in one of those folders into the flash slideshow. How should I go about doing this? I tried used Air but it doesn't work on my system as an application so I doubt it will work online. Eventually I plan on making a menu where you can select different folders to display and since they are of different sizes, a foreach loop would be optimal. Keeping a txt file with the number of images is also possible if theres a way to read that in, but I would prefer the more dynamic approach. I am working towards using php for the website if that helps find a solution. Thanks, -Mike Also my slideshow works great online currently but i have to hardcode in the number of files.

• Create a color generator in matplotlib

  I have a series of lines that each need to be plotted with a separate colour. Each line is actually made up of several data sets (positive, negative regions etc.) and so I'd like to be able to create a generator that will feed one colour at a time across a spectrum, for example the gist_rainbow map shown here. I have found the following works but it seems very complicated and more importantly difficult to remember, from pylab import * NUM_COLORS = 22 mp = cm.datad['gist_rainbow'] get_color = matplotlib.colors.LinearSegmentedColormap.from_list(mp, colors=['r', 'b'], N=NUM_COLORS) ... # Then in a for loop this_color = get_color(float(i)/NUM_COLORS) Moreover, it does not cover the range of colours in the gist_rainbow map, I have to redefine a map. Maybe a generator is not the best way to do this, if so what is the accepted way?

  Hi, I have a vector of Rect: vector<Rect> myRecVec; I would like to remove the ones which are overlapping in the vector: So I have 2 nested loop like this: vector<Rect>::iterator iter1 = myRecVec.begin(); vector<Rect>::iterator iter2 = myRecVec.begin(); while( iter1 != myRecVec.end() ) { Rectangle r1 = *iter1; while( iter2 != myRecVec.end() ) { Rectangle r2 = *iter1; if (r1 != r2) { if (r1.intersects(r2)) { // remove r2 from myRectVec } } } } My question is how can I remove r2 from the myRectVect without screwing up both my iterators? Since I am iterating a vector and modifying the vector at the same time? I have thought about putting r2 in a temp rectVect and then remove them from the rectVect later (after the iteration). But how can I skip the ones in this temp rectVect during iteration?

  Have a few questions related to adding sounds to my game, specifically intro music (for splash), background music (loop) and button event sounds. Hope you can share your knowledge on this. 1) Should I use compressed sounds or uncompressed sounds? Or perhaps a combination of the two? Are there any limitations on the iPhone hardware that I should be aware of -- for example, the ability to play multiple compressed sounds? 2) What's the best audio format for my purpose? 3) For background music, I am thinking of using AVAudioPlayer. For button event sounds, I am thinking of using AudioServicesPlaySystemSound, what do you think? 4) Any other issues I should be aware of? Thank you!

• Difficulties of transforming a Java program to another language (or vice versa)

  Is there anything simple Java can't do that can be done in a similar language or vice versa? Lets say you have a piece of software in language X and you rewrite it entirely to Java (or the other way around), what are the little things that would seriously hamper the translation? At first I was thinking of comprehensions or multiple exit loops, but these are easily rewritten with a for_each loop with an if statement and a local variable respectively. Maybe Exceptions? But which language does not have a similar construct? Polymorphism? But I don't see how I could show that in a few lines. I'm looking for a short and sweet example, that would give some serious headache to work around.

• Lua class instance with nested tables

  Hello, Simple lua game with simple class like so: creature = class({ name = "MONSTER BADDY!", stats = { power = 10, agility = 10, endurance = 10, filters = {} }, other_things = ... }) creatureA = creature.new() creatureB = creature.new() creatureA.name = "Frank" creatureB.name = "Zappa" creatureA.stats.agility = 20 creatureB.stats.power = 12 -- blah blah blah Non table values are individual to each instance, but table values are shared among all instances and if I modify a stats.X value in one instance, all other instances see the same stats table. Q1: Is my OO implementation flawed? I tried LOOP and the same result occured, is there a fundamental flaw in my logic? Q2: How would you have each instance of creature have it's own stats table (and sub tables)? PS. I cannot flatten my class table as it's a bit more complicated than the example and other parts of the code are simplified with this nested table implementation. Thanks a bunch.

  I have an array being returned from the database that looks like so: $data = array(201 => array('description' => blah, 'hours' => 0), 222 => array('description' => feh, 'hours' => 0); In the next bit of code, I'm using a foreach and checking the for the key in another table. If the next query returns data, I want to update the 'hours' value in that key's array with a new hours value: foreach ($data as $row => $value){ $query = $db->query($sql); if ($result){ $value['hours'] = $result['hours']; } I've tried just about every combination of declarations for the foreach loop, but I keep getting the error that it's a non-object. Surely this is easier than my brain is perceiving it.

  I am interested in writing an app that overlays a small heads up display (HUD) over another application, in VB.NET. Does anyone have an example of this? I will need to enumerate all open windows to find the window that I want, and then overlay some text in a specific position on the window. If the user moves that window, my text will need to follow. (I will probably be painting the text in a loop over and over). Ideally, we don't need to make a new local variable such as x and assign it the value of i inside the loop, but just so that i has a new copy in the new scope each time. (if possible).   I'm making a custom button in Java that has two states, mousePressed, and mouseReleased. At the same time, if I wanted to reuse this button, so that other event listeners can register with it, are these the appropriate steps I should do: override addActionListener(ActionListener action) override removeActionListener(ActionListener action) have a private variable like List <ActionListener> list = new List <ActionListener>() to keep track of when events get added and some sort of function with for loop to run all the actions: public void runListeners() { for (ActionListener al : list) { al.actionPerfomed; } } I'm not really sure if this is the way you can do it or if there are other things I am missing. Like does my custom class have to be implements ActionListener? Thanks.
