• VS 2010 SQL Update for SQL Statement

  Please bear with me as I'm just beginning to learn this stuff. I have a VS 2010 Web project up and I'm trying to understand how I can make a custom UpdateCommand (Because I chose to write my own SQL statement, I do not have the option for VS 2010 to auto generate an update command for me.) Problem is: I don't know what the UpdateCommand should look like. Here is my Select: SELECT * FROM Dbo.MainAsset, dbo.Model, dbo.Hardware WHERE MainAsset.device = Hardware.DeviceID AND MainAsset.model = Model.DeviceID Which, VS 2010 turns into: SELECT MainAsset.pk, MainAsset.img, MainAsset.device, MainAsset.model, MainAsset.os, MainAsset.asset, MainAsset.serial, MainAsset.inyear, MainAsset.expyear, MainAsset.site, MainAsset.room, MainAsset.teacher, MainAsset.FirstName, MainAsset.LastName, MainAsset.Notes, MainAsset.Dept, MainAsset.AccountingCode, Model.Model AS Hardware, Model.pk AS Model, Model.DeviceID, Hardware.Computer, Hardware.pk AS Expr3, Hardware.DeviceID AS Expr4 FROM MainAsset INNER JOIN Hardware ON MainAsset.device = Hardware.DeviceID INNER JOIN Model ON MainAsset.model = Model.DeviceID How would I approach updating one column, say "MainAsset.site" if that's changed in the Gridview DDL? • "Inlining" (kind of) functions at runtime in C

  Hi, I was thinking about a typical problem that is very JIT-able, but hard to approach with raw C. The scenario is setting up a series of function pointers that are going to be "composed" (as in maths function composition) once at runtime and then called lots and lots of times. Doing it the obvious way involves many virtual calls, that are expensive, and if there are enough nested functions to fill the CPU branch prediction table completely, then the performance with drop considerably. In a language like Lisp, I could probably process the code and substitute the "virtual" call by the actual contents of the functions and then call compile to have an optimized version, but that seems very hacky and error prone to do in C, and using C is a requirement for this problem ;-) So, do you know if there's a standard, portable and safe way to achieve this in C?   I created a plain servlet within a seam-gen (2.1.2) application, now I would like to use injection. • C: theory on how to extract files from an archived file

  In C I have created a program which can archive multiple files into an archive file via the command line. e.g. $echo 'file1/2' > file1/2.txt $./archive file1.txt file2.txt arhivedfile $cat archivedfile file1 file2 How do I create a process so that in my archivedfile I have: header file1 end header file2 end They are all stored in the archive file one after another after another. I know that perhaps a header file is needed(containing filename, size of filename, start and end of file) for extracting these files back out into their original form, but how would I go about doing this. I am stuck on where and how to start. Please could someone help me on some logic as to how to approach extracting files back out of an archived file.

• What is an appropriate way to programmatically exit an application?

  I am evaluating user inputs as commands for my application. If the user presses Q, or q, and then hits enter, the application quits and execution terminates. Is there a proper context, or best practices on how to do that? I do not have any resources to release, or anything like that. Should I just use System.exit(0);? Is there a recommended way to do that? • How can I test if an input field contains foreign characters?

  I have an input field in a form. Upon pushing submit, I want to validate to make sure the user entered non-latin characters only, so any foreign language characters, like Chinese among many others. Or at the very least test to make sure it does not contain any latin characters. Could I use a regular expression for this? What would be the best approach for this? I am validating in both javaScript and in PHP. What solutions can I use to check for foreign characters in the input field in both programming languages?

• Compiler error when using abstract types

  I'm trying to implement a "protocol helper" trait that is responsible for matching up Prompts and Responses. The eventual goal is to have an object that defines the various Prompt and Response classes as subclasses of a sealed trait, then have a class that mixes in the ProtocolSupport trait for that Protocol object. The problem is that my current approach won't compile, even though I'm fairly sure it should. • Proper chart scaling in Reporting Services 2005

  I'm developing a simple bar-chart in Reporting Services 2005 with a stored procedure as data-source. The values in this graph can be both positive and negative, and can span a very big range, and hence I cannot specify any non-dynamic scale that will work for all scenarios. The problem I'm facing is that the automatic scaling pretty much sucks. I get no line to show where the zero-point is, and the y-scale labels are from top to bottom: 8818 -191181 -391181 etc etc... So my question is, what is the best approach to make the scale more adapted to human reading? Is there any guide out there? Does reporting services 2008 handle this better? Also, moving away from Reporting Services is not really an option. I realize how to put values and expression in the max, min, and the gridline interval fields, although its more of a question what expressions I should put there.

• couchdb: one database per account vs all in one database w. a namespace / property

  I'm modelling a document generation system in couchdb. It semi-automates the production of proposal and presentation documents from managable document fragments. Much like, say, Basecamp, it breaks down very simply into self-contained data per 'account'. Each account has multiple users, projects, documents, etc. However, nothing should be shared between accounts. I can see two ways of doing this: one couchdb database per account use a namespace / property to identify the account It seems to me that the first approach is conceptually sound and potentially has security and partitioning advantages. However, it seems to me to restrict some cross-database data querying (that I don't have a use case for now but you never know...) and to make updating views potentially require an awful lot of writes. Does anyone experienced with this kind of decision have any advice?

  I have included SQLCipher into my project exactly like explained in this link: http://sqlcipher.net/ios-tutorial/ But I am not sure how to encrypt the database I have read description from above link but not getting. Actually what I am doing is if application is opening first time then it will copy the database(i.e. without encryption) to the document directory. One more thing my database is blank when copying from bundle to document directory. I have tried to use sqlite3_key function after opening the database but nothing is encrypted. But I didn't found something like how to encrypt database when copying from bundle to document directory. I am planning to use FMDB so it would be better to reply according to that. Please guide me how to do that or point to direction if is there any tutorial for it. Also suggest what should be the standard approach to do that.

• How to track when my application has unexpectedly shut down?

  I'm writing an application whose purpose involves a lot of logging of different events. Among those I would also like to have an event that the application was shut down - even if unexpectedly like because of a power loss. Naturally, when the power goes out I don't get a chance to write anything anywhere. So my idea was to continuously write a timestamp in some known location (say, once per minute), and when the application was next run, it could determine the approximate time of the unexpected shutdown. A precision of 1 minute would be acceptable for me. However I'm worried that caching at the OS and disk level might interfere with this approach. Is there a better way or if not - how to make sure that the data I just wrote is REALLY written out to the physical medium? Added: Oh, almost forgot the buzzword line: Windows XP and above; .NET 3.5; C#.

• How to stop a MFC/win32 control re-painting

  I have a CRichEditCtrl, and an algorithm works on its contents in-place, iterating through the contents and making changes. This seems to cause it to re-paaint every time, which causes flickering and a noticeable time to complete the operation, especially if the control starts scrolling. I wondered if there's a neat way for me to stop it repainting for a period. It's actually a custom subclass of CRichEditCtrl in use so I was thinking something like: void MyCustomEditCtrl::DoAlgorithm() { enableRepaint(false); ... //to the actual work ... enableRepaint(true); } What's the neatest approach? A custom on-paint handler which does nothing when an operation is in progress? Or can repainting actually be disabled?

  I am making one application where user will print invoices which I am displaying using Crystal Report. The user showed me his current application made using ForPro. In that application, under Printer Options form, one can see all the printers currently installed and the user could select default printer. When the invoice is made, the user presses the print button, then there is one dialog asking for no. of copies. When it's entered, the invoice gets printed directly, without any Print Dialog Box. If the user wants to change the printer again he/she will change it in the Printer Option form. I want to know if similar thing is possible in Crystal Report and need guidance on how to approach for it.

• Resource grouping? people with the same skill?

  Let's say I have 4 people. Sometimes anyone can do a task, but sometimes they are specific. I would like to group people by skill. Is there any way I can do that? Right now, I have something like this: Resources: SkillA=3, GuyA=1, GuyB=1, GuyC=1 Task A <= SkillA Anyone can do it Task B <= SkillA, GuyB Only B can do it, but I also allocate the skill just to be sure I don't allocate more than 3 people at the same time. My problem with this approach is that sometimes GuyA is on holidays, but I can't reduce SkillA from 3 to 2 in that period.. Any tips?

  Hello, im creating a MVC application thats following a restfull URL approach Im am experiencing the following error... "The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters." This error occurs when my URL length = 225 chars. Surly I can have much longer URL's without this problem and doesn’t this relate to file paths rather than URL's ? Im sure some of you MVC guys have experienced this ;) is there a way round it ?? where am i going wrong ?? thank you for your time Truegilly

• How can you check if a file exists before including/importing it in JSP?

  Assuming that requestScope.importMe is expecting a path to a jsp file <c:choose> <c:when test="${!empty requestScope.importMe && fileExists(requestScope.importMe) }"> <c:import url="${requestScope.importMe}" /> ... How can I check if the file exists before trying to include it so that an error is not thrown? I'd like to avoid using inline Java. Something using one of the JSTL tags is the preferred approach.

  I have read a lot of approaches regarding placement of the footer in a webpage with CSS. Between others i found solutions, within SO too. The problem is (i think) that most of them, do not apply in asp pages. So the question is how can i place the footer with pure CSS in Asp pages? Before you post your answer, you have to take in mind the following. • Why there is so few AJAX (WEB 2.0) websites ?

  I am wondering and looking for some general reasons why there is so few full AJAX websites. Good example would be Gmail, which really uses a lot of the modern web technologies. But there is so few of these and almost all the websites use classic "request - pageload" approach. I am going to be developing website with most requests completed by AJAX call, as there is need for as few page loads as possible. So I am looking for some general advices or opinions about this. My personal big concern is search engines, because if most of the content is at one URL, how do you make that AJAX content crawlable ? There are probably more these questions which rise up, and I am looking for these to prepare for these problems before I start developing and it's too late to fix them.

  I need the ability to load and start a GWT App at any time in an Echo2 environment. My first approach was to load and execute the nocache.js in a Client-Server sync using var script = document.createElement("script"); script.setAttribute("src",javascriptURI); script.setAttribute("type","text/javascript"); document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0].appendChild(script); This call basically works, but when the script is executed it operates on an EMPTY document instead of the current document of the Echo2 application. Has the script to be somehow initialized first or is there any event required? The GWT application/script works fine if it's included in the start-up HTML of the application, so I assume the GWT App to be correct. The original standalone HTML of the GWT App has the HTML script tag in the body as well.

  I would like to write a simple program in c++. After the program is done i would like to get my answers in form of a graph or picture that would give some certain information if i click on a certain area. i have only written console apllications in c++ before and don't really have a clue where to start with the graphic part of it all. Can I write the first part of the program in console mode and some how run it under the WIN32 later? for ex what will happen to the cout<<"foo"; commands? Is there a simpler approach to do some very basic graphic programming.

• MySQL: How to separate a name field in one table into firstname / lastname in two separate tables?

  I have a drupal database where the node table is full of profiles. The field node.title is "Firstname Lastname". I want to separate the names so that node.title = "Firstname", and over in another table entirely, content_type_profile.field_lastname_value = "Lastname". The entries in the two tables can be joined on the field nid. I'd love to run a SQL command to do this, and I am fine with taking the naive approach that the first word is the first name, and everything else in the field is last name -- it will mean a few manual corrections down the line, but that's much better than doing it all by hand in the first place. (I read this question and surely the answer lies in there but I am not that SQL-savvy and am not sure how to make it work for my database.) Thanks!

• rails 3.1 partial_updates doesn't seem to work with password

  i have a user model with a password attribute, which gets saved as password_digest. What i want to do is have the edit user page and the edit password page separated, so that the admin doesn't need to input the password everytime he needs to change something else. For this i have made an extra action / view. My problem is that when i update the user info, i get password validation errors even though i have no password field in the form. Which leads me to the conclusion that partial_updates isn't working with the password attribute (as i have already tested in the console that it is enabled, and it is) Is this me doing something wrong, or should i approach this differently?

Boxing it seems to work, but I was hoping to see if I could find a more intelligent approach to it, since the Collection will contain other types of objects that also inherit from Base.

• How to handle request/response propagation up and down a widget hierarchy in a GUI app?

  Given a GUI application where widgets can be composed of other widgets: If the user triggers an event resulting in a lower level widget needing data from a model, what's the cleanest way to be able to send that request to a controller (or the datastore itself)? And subsequently get the response back to that widget? Presumably one wouldn't want the controller or datastore to be a singleton directly available to all levels of widgets, or is this an acceptable use of singleton? Or should a top level controller be injected as a dependency through a widget hierarchy, as far down as the lowest level widget that might need that controller? Or a different approach entirely?
