  • How does one gets started with Winforms style applications on Win32?

    EDIT: I'm extremely tired and frustrated at the moment -- please ignore that bit in this question -- I'll edit it in the morning to be better. Okay -- a bit of background: I'm a C++ programmer mostly, but the only GUI stuff I've ever done was on top of .NET's WinForms platform. I'm completely new to Windows GUI programming, and despite Petzold's excellent book, I'm extremely confused. Namely, it seems that most every reference on getting started with Win32 is all about drawing lines and curves and things -- a topic about which (at least at present time) I couldn't care less. I need a checked list box, a splitter, and a textbox -- something that would take less than 10 minutes to do in Winforms land. It has been recommended to me to use the WTL library, which provides an implementation of all three of these controls -- but I keep getting hung up on simple things, such as getting the damn controls to use the right font, and getting High DPI working correctly. I've spent two freaking days on this, and I can't help but think there has to be a better reference for these kinds of things than I've been able to find. Petzold's book is good, but it hasn't been updated since Windows 95 days, and there's been a LOT changed w.r.t. how applications should be correctly developed since it was published. I guess what I'm looking for is a modern Petzold book. Where can I find such a resource, if any?

  • How to force delete cookies even if one window is still open?

    Apparently in IE8, there is this option 'Preserve Favorites website data', even if I uncheck it the browser will still keep the cookies until the last window is closed. Problem scenario. say I logged in to somesite.com, then without out logging out, I closed the window, but there was still another IE8 window open. In this case IE8 will keep the cookies of this site. So If I opened the site again (same window or another) the site won't ask for login info. The client wants the web application to be logged off as soon as the user closes the browser. Can I force delete the cookies IE8 is saving? or maybe I can stop the user from closing the window until I simulate a click on logout button?

  • How can one describe a rock-paper-scissors relationship between 3 items?

    Let's say I have the following structure: abstract class Hand {} class Rock extends Hand {} class Paper extends Hand {} class Scissors extends Hand {} The goal is to make a function (or a method) Hand::compareHands(Hand $hand1, Hand $hand2), which would return the winning hand in a rock-paper-scissors match. That would be very easy with a bunch of ifs, but the point is to have a more robust structure, that's relying on polymorphism rather than on procedural code. P.S. this is done in actual production code, if someone is asking. This isn't some sort of challenge or homework. (It's not really rock-paper-scissors, but you get the point).

  • How can one check for a binary in the GAC in a WiX installer?

    I have an application which depends on the Team Foundation Server "Object Model", and looks for such binaries in the GAC. This means that clients of the app need to install Visual Studio, or the standalone TFS object model in order to use the application. I would like the installer to detect that the TFS bits aren't installed, and fail to install appropriately if they are not. Is such a thing possible?

  • Is it possible to write a database view that encompasses one-to-many relationships?

    So I'm not necessarily saying this is even a good idea if it were possible, since the schema of the view would be extremely volatile, but is there any way to represent a has-many relationship in a single view? For example, let's say I have a customer that can have any number of addresses in the database. Is there any way to list out each column of each address with perhaps a number as a part of the alias (e.g., columns like Customer Id, Name, Address_Street_1, Address_Street_2, etc)? Thanks!

    I have a logic situation that is best described as two "Teams" trying to win a task. The outcome of this task could be a single winner, a tie (draw), or no winner (stalemate). Currently, I'm using a nested if/else statement like so: // using PHP, but the concept seems language agnostic. if ($team_a->win()) { if ($team_b->win()) { // this is a draw } else { // team_a is the winner } } else { if ($team_b->win()) { // team_b is the winner } else { // This is a stalemate, no winner. } } This seems rather spaghetti-like and repetitive.   • C#: Using one Data Table in order to fill 2 different comboboxes?

    Hi all. I have 2 comboboxes on a form (form1) called combobox1 and combobox2. Each comboboxes should be filled with data stored in 2 different tables in Sql server 2005: table1 and table2 I mean: combobox1 -- table1 combobox2 -- table2 I fill data table with proper data and then bind the comboboxes to it separately. My problem is: after filling 2 combos, both of them have equal data got from table2.   • Anyone Know a Great Sparse One Dimensional Array Library in Python?

    I am working on an algorithm in Python that uses arrays heavily. The arrays are typically sparse and are read from and written to constantly. I am currently using relatively large native arrays and the performance is good but the memory usage is high (as expected). I would like to be able to have the array implementation not waste space for values that are not used and allow an index offset other than zero. As an example, if my numbers start at 1,000,000 I would like to be able to index my array starting at 1,000,000 and not be required to waste memory with a million unused values. Array reads and writes needs to be fast. Expanding into new territory can be a small delay but reads and writes should be O(1) if possible. Does anybody know of a library that can do it? Thanks!

    I have a mailing list application that sends emails through several dedicated SMTP servers (running Linux Debian 5 and Postfix) in the same network of a hosting company. However, the application is using the servers' external IP addresses in order to connect to them over SMTP, and I was wondering what kind of improvement would be obtained if the application used the internal IP addresses of the servers instead?     Hello, I've installed: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) and got the following folders: x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21022.8_none_bcb86ed6ac711f91 x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4926_none_508ed732bcbc0e5a I allready uninstalled the redistribute package but they continue overthere. I want to remove them because I want to test my program without installing nothing (I've included those dll's when building it in another computer). So, how can I remove those folders from C:\Windows\winsxs? Thanks in advance :D

  • How to create a new IDA project based on an existing one with different offsets?

    I have an existing IDA Pro project for a C166 processor embedded application. This project already has many functions, variables, etc defined. There are different versions of the embedded application I am looking at. The different versions of the application are 99% the same, but with slight variations in code and data that cause functions and variables to be at different memory offsets. I want to create a new IDA project for a different version of the application. I would like to somehow import all of my function and variable definitions from my existing IDA project. I would like IDA to recognize the signatures of the existing function definitions and define them at there new location in the new project. How can I do this? Are there certain plugins for IDA I can chain together?

MyClass[] arr1; 3. // filled the array with objects and did some work on it . 4. dgv_1.DataSource=origArr; 5. 6. // Here is the problem : 7. arr1=origArr; 8. // do some work on arr1 ... 9. dgv_2.DataSource=arr1; For some reason the data in 'origArr' changed when data in 'arr1' change ... I thought that maybe this happened because 'origArr' and 'arr1' are pointers referring to the same object so I changed line '7' to : 7. origArr.CopyTo(arr1,0); but it didn't work ... what can i do to make the pointers referring to different objects?
