  • Multithreading recommendation based on program description

    I would like to describe some specifics of my program and get feedback on what the best multithreading model to use would be most applicable. I've spent a lot of time now reading on ThreadPool, Threads, Producer/Consumer, etc. and have yet to come to solid conclusions. I have a list of files (all the same format) but with different contents. I have to perform work on each file. The work consists of reading the file, some processing that takes about 1-2 minutes of straight number crunching, and then writing large output files at the end. I would like the UI interface to still be responsive after I initiate the work on the specified files. Some questions: What model/mechanisms should I use? Producer/Consumer, WorkPool, etc. Should I use a BackgroundWorker in the UI for responsiveness or can I launch the threading from within the Form as long as I leave the UI thread alone to continue responding to user input? How could I take results or status of each individual work on each file and report it to the UI in a thread safe way to give user feedback as the work progresses (there can be close to 1000 files to process) Update: Great feedback so far, very helpful. I'm adding some more details that are asked below: Output is to multiple independent files. One set of output files per "work item" that then themselves gets read and processed by another process before the "work item" is complete The work items/threads do not share any resources. The work items are processed in part using a unmanaged static library that makes use of boost libraries.

    Hi! I'm having issues with BitmapFactory.decodeStream(inputStream). When using it without options, it will return an image. But when I use it with options as in .decodeStream(inputStream, null, options) it never returns Bitmaps. What I'm trying to do is to downsample a Bitmap before I actually load it to save memory. I've read some good guides, but none using .decodeStream.   • Dealing with huge SQL resultset

    I am working with a rather large mysql database (several million rows) with a column storing blob images. The application attempts to grab a subset of the images and runs some processing algorithms on them. The problem I'm running into is that, due to the rather large dataset that I have, the dataset that my query is returning is too large to store in memory. For the time being, I have changed the query to not return the images. While iterating over the resultset, I run another select which grabs the individual image that relates to the current record. This works, but the tens of thousands of extra queries have resulted in a performance decrease that is unacceptable. My next idea is to limit the original query to 10,000 results or so, and then keep querying over spans of 10,000 rows. This seems like the middle of the road compromise between the two approaches. I feel that there is probably a better solution that I am not aware of. Is there another way to only have portions of a gigantic resultset in memory at a time? Cheers, Dave McClelland

  • jQuery DataTables: Problems with POST Server Side JSON output

    Hello Everyone, I am trying to get my datatable to take a POST JSON output from my server. This is my client side code <script> $(document).ready(function() { $('#example').dataTable( { "bProcessing": true, "bServerSide": true, "sAjaxSource": "http://localhost/staff/jobs/my_jobs", "fnServerData": function ( sSource, aoData, fnCallback ) { $.ajax( { "dataType": 'json', "type": "POST", "url": sSource, "data": aoData, "success": fnCallback } ); } } ); } ); </script> Now I have copied and pasted the server side code found in the DataTables examples found here. When I change my sAjaxSource to view this page the table doesn't move beyond 'processing'. When I view the JSON directly I see this output. {"sEcho": 1, "iTotalRecords": 1, "iTotalDisplayRecords": 1, "aaData": [ ["Trident","First Ever Job"]] } Just for fun I went to the POST server-side example and copied some of the JSON they are using for their example and just PHP echoed it straight out of another page. This is the output of that page. {"sEcho": 1, "iTotalRecords": 1, "iTotalDisplayRecords": 1, "aaData": [ ["Trident","Internet Explorer 4.0"]] } Here is where it gets interesting. The JSON that has been processed by the server fails to work yet the JSON simply echo'd by the same server on a different page does work... yet both are almost identical in outputs. I hope someone can shed some light on this because as the tree said to the lumberjack... I'm stumped. Thanks, Tim

    I have build a custom Html Helper extension as follows: public static string DatePicker(this HtmlHelper helper, string name, string value) { return string.Format(@"<script type='text/javascript'> $(document).ready(function(){{ $('#{0}').datepicker({{ changeMonth: true, changeYear:true, dateFormat: 'd-M-yy', firstDay: 1, showButtonPanel: true, showWeek: true }}); }}); </script> <input type='text' name='{0}' id='{0}' value='{1}'>", name, value); } The problem is that this now requires the page to "include" the following: <script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.4.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="/Scripts/jquery.ui.datepicker.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> And a few other items. The questions are as follows: Is there a serious processing overhead if I were to include these items in EVERY page (like in the Site.Master for example) thus negating the need for the HtmlHelper to organise the "includes" - considering there would end up being about 20 includes for all the different types of jQuery UI widgets used throughout the site. If the HtmlHelper sorts out the "includes", it will add one every time this DatePicker is used (often there are two on a page) Does anyone have a way of determining whether or not the user has already rendered the same type of control on the page, thus not re-including the same jquery libraries when multiple instances of the DatePicker (for example) are used?

  • sudo port install arm-elf-gcc3 fails with "No defined site for tag: gcc…"

    Am trying to get the ARM plugin for Eclipse (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuarmeclipse/) going on iMac i7, OS 10.6.3, Xcode 3.2.2 (don't want to upgrade during my project). The plugin needs (IIRC) arm-elf-gcc3, which needs darwinports for "easy" install.   • Slow XML-RPC in Windows 7 with XML-RPC.NET

    I'm considering to use XML-RPC.NET to communicate with a Linux XML-RPC server written in Python. I have tried a sample application (MathApp) from Cook Computing's XML-RPC.NET but it took 30 seconds for the app to add two numbers within the same LAN with server. I have also tried to run a simple client written in Python on Windows 7 to call the same server and it responded in 5 seconds. The machine has 4 GB of RAM with comparable processing power so this is not an issue. Then I tried to call the server from a Windows XP system with Java and PHP. Both responses were pretty fast, almost instantly. The server was responding quickly on localhost too, so I don't think the latency arise from server. My googling returned me some problems regarding Windows' use of IPv6 but our call to server does include IPv4 address (not hostname) in the same subnet. Anyways I turned off IPv6 but nothing changed. Are there any more ways to check for possible causes of latency?

  • jQuery AJAX request (Rails 3) gets redirected and returns empty message body (only with SSL)!

    I'm trying to do a manual jQuery AJAX request the following way: $("#user_plan_id").change(function() { $("#plan_container").load('/plans/' + this.value); }); I have the "rails.js" file included in my header, and a "<%= csrf_meta_tag %". I see from my log that the request IS getting to the server (although without the authenticity token... does rails.js even do this?), but the response is a 302 (Found) rather than 200, and no data actually gets rendered. Any ideas? Edit: I now see that the first request redirects, and the proper partial gets rendered on the redirect. However, the 2nd response's body (on the client-side) is still empty. I'm guessing jQuery uses the first response and doesn't have a listener set up for the redirect. How do I get around this? Also, another note: the page doing the requesting is an HTTPS page.     I have developed a web app using a webservice. Everything works fine in the development environment. I have moved the webservice to the production server in a test folder behind my main website. I can browse to the published service localy on the production server and i can access the remote service from my development machine. If I run my web app in my development environment I can use the remote webservice no problem. If I move the web application to the production environment the browser outputs this error when the application performs the ajax login method. Discarding the data is a start, but I need to discard up to a point I can start processing messages again. The corrupt message may be lost, but I need to be able to recover from it. I've got the following idea in mind: Put a fixed header at the start of each message, eg. 0xABCDEF01. When recovering, lookup this header and restart handling incoming messages. = Break off readFortune() on a timeout and recover = When encountering an inconsistent header, recover A huge blocksize is still going to be a problem. To fix that, I should be constantly checking whether or not I'm reading gibberish, but this is not always possible. I can also limit the blocksize on certain message-types. Any ideas on this? Any proposals on what to use as byteword?

I have tried all the advice i could find on the IBM forums (such as here) to no avail. I have enabled XA transactions on my XP Sp2 machine, tried also from a Win 2003 Server machine but i consistently get the infamous error: ERROR [58005] [IBM][DB2/NT] SQL0998N Error occurred during transaction or heuristic processing.     Hi there, I'm working through the ANTLR book and there are many examples that should be easy to compile using the command line. Some information to get te problem: antlr-3.2.jar contains the ANTLR classes. I added the antlr-3.2.jar to the CLASSPATH environment variable (Windows 7) and when compiling the classes with javac everything works fine. This is what i execute to compile my program: javac Test.java ExprLexer.java ExprParser.java Test.java contains my main()-method whereas ExprLexer and ExprParser are generated by ANTLR. All three classes use classes contained in the antlr-3.2.jar. But so far so good. As I just said, compiling works fine. It's when I try to execute the Test.class that I get trouble. This is what I type: java -cp ./ Test When executing this, the interpreter tells me that he can't find the ANTLR-classes contained in the antlr-3.2.jar, altough I added an entry in the CLASSPATH variable.     I've had a set of legacy pages running on my IIS7 server for at least a year. Sometime last week something changed and now this line: Response.Write CStr(myRS(0).name) & "=" & Cstr(myRS(0).value) which used to return nothing more exciting than the string: 'Updated=true' (the sproc processing input params, stores them to a table, checks for errors and when that's all done returns a success code by executing this statement: select 'true' as [Updated] Now my pageside error handler is being involved and offers: myError=Error from /logQuizScore.asp Error source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error Error number: 13 Error description: Type mismatch Important to note that all lots of pages use the same framework - same db, same coding format, connecitonstrings and (so far as I can tell) all others are working. Troubleshot to this point: The call to the stored procedure is working correctly (stuff is stored to the given table). The output from the stored procedure is working correctly (i can execute a direct call with the given parameters and stuff works. I can see profiler calling and passing. I can replace all code with 'select 'true' as updated' and the error is the same. everything up to the response.write statement above is correct. So something changed how ADO renders that particular recordset. So i try: Response.Write myRS.Item.count and get: Error number: 424 Error description: Object required The recordset object seems not to be instantiating but the command object _did execute.   • Why is the UpdatePanel Response size changing on alternate requests?

    We are using UpdatePanel in a small portion of a large page and have noticed a performance problem where IE7 becomes CPU bound and the control within the UpdatePanel takes a long time (upwards of 30 seconds) to render. We also noticed that Firefox does not seem to suffer from these delays. We ran both Fiddler (for IE) and Firebug (for Firefox) and noticed that the real problem lied with the amount of data being returned in update panel responses. Within the UpdatePanel control there is a table that contains a number of ListBox controls. The real problem is that EVERY OTHER TIME the response (from making ListBox selections) alternates from 30K to 430K. Firefox handles the 400+K response in a reasonable amount of time. For whatever reason, IE7 goes CPU bound while it is presumably processing this data. So irrespective of whether or not we should be using an UpdatePanel or not, we'd like to figure out why every other async postback response is larger by a factor of more than 10 than the previous one. When the response is in the 30K range, IE updates the display within a second. On the alternate times, the response time is well over 10 times longer. Any idea why this alternating behavior should be happening with an UpdatePanel?

  • Recursion in an ASP.NET MVC view

    I have a nested data object for a set of items within categories. Each category can contain sub categories and there is no set limit to the depth of sub categories. (A file system would have a similar structure.) It looks something like this: class category { public int id; public string name; public IQueryable<category> categories; public IQueryable<item> items; } class item { public int id; public string name; } I am passing a list of categories to my view as IQueryable<category>. I want to output the categories as a set of nested unordered list (<ul>) blocks. I could nest foreach loops, but then the depth of sub categories would be limited by the number of nested foreach blocks. In WinForms, I have done similar processing using recursion to populate a TreeView, but I haven't seen any examples of using recursion within an ASPX MVC view. Can recursion be done within an ASPX view? Are there other view engines that include recursion for view output?

  • C# Thread Pool Cross-Thread Communication

    The Scenario I have a windows forms application containing a MAINFORM with a listbox on it. The MAINFORM also has a THREAD POOL that creates new threads and fires them off to do lots of different bits of processing. Whilst each of these different worker threads is doing its job, I want to report this progress back to my MAINFORM, however, I can't because it requires Cross-Thread communication. Progress So far all of the tutorials etc. that I have seen relating to this topic involve custom(ish) threading implementations, whereas I literally have a fairly basic(ish) standard THREAD POOL implementation. Since I don't want to really modify any of my code (since the application runs like a beast with no quarms) - I'm after some advice as to how I can go about doing this cross-thread communication. ALTERNATIVELY - How to implement a different "LOGTOSCREEN" method altogether (obviously still bearing in mind the cross-thread communication thing). WARNING: I use this website at work, where we are locked down to IE6 only, and the javascript thus fails, meaning I cannot click accept on any answers during work, and thus my acceptance rate is low. I can't do anything about it I'm afraid, sorry. EDIT: I DO NOT HAVE INSTALL RIGHTS ON MY COMPUTER AT WORK. I do have firefox but the proxy at work fails when using this site on firefox. FURTHER EDIT: I DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE MY THREADING IMPLEMENTATION. AT ALL! - Accept to enable cross-thread communication....why would a backgroundworker help here!?
