• Removing duplicate images (deduplication) - calculating "overlap" of images

  Hello, I have a ton of product images on our file system. Our code removes 100% identical images (or does not allow them to be uploaded). However our sellers often upload items pictures which are very similar, but not exactly. They could have more whitespace, a worse quality (compression), a different size etc. Is there any way I can calculate the degree of overlap between two images, to flag ones for deletion? Kind of like a Levenshtein distance between two images... Any pointers would be very cool. Thanks!

• Problem using Polar Irda device in Windows Server 2008

  I'm attempting to use the Polar IrDA device with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.   Hi, I want to know how the request & response from the VPN server on e.g.: https://host.tld/dana/jw?con=1234567890&seqno=7 is encoded, the output seems to be binary. I assume it is the application data which gets exchanged with this request, am I right in this? If not, what else gets transferred over this, what is contained in the response? I'm pretty new to this product and want to understand how it works in deep. Thanks in advance folks.

  Running RSH commands on a Windows box against a Linux box works only for the administrator user. Is there a file somewhere that has a list of users that can run commands remotely? More Info The server configuration is automated by VMware's product... There's no /etc/hosts.equiv file setup but there is a /root/.rhosts file with an entry of [IP ADDRESS] +. The SUA client C:\Windows\SUA\bin\rsh can login when run as the local administrator account but no other user can login. The error is: rcmd: unknown user: [username]. The command I'm trying to run is: rsh -l root [IP ADDRESS] ls.

• How to set _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations in Oracle10g.

  I am working on a product that must support both MSSQL and Oracle (10g and 11g). I have some very complex queries that seem to run without issue on MSSQL 2005/2008, but very, very slow with Oracle. The CPU on the oracle server skyrockets for long periods of time, and it seems like the optimizer may be trying to find the best execution plan for the very complex query. I did some Googling to figure out how to limit the amount of time the optimizer spends on this, and came up with _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations. Both of these parameters are hidden in Oracle 10g, and setting them in init.ora doesn't seem to make any difference. How do I set these parameters in Oracle. Or am I just totally barking up the wrong tree with the assumption that the optimizer is spending several minutes finding an execution plan? Thanks.

• Turn Windows Event Logs EVT files into Syslog to send to LogLogic

  I have a a requirement to analyze 13gb of Windows logs by feeding it into a LogLogic Log aggregator. LogLogic is essentially Linux Syslog server, it can take a Syslog (Tcp/udp 514) feed or log on to a windows share and pull a flat file log. The only problem is that it cannot read the binary .EVT files from Windows Event logs. Normally, I would use Lasso to end the logs to a loglogic as syslog, but it has to read the logs from WMI and uses the DLLs on the log source host to format them and transmit them as syslog in the formatting that LogLogic expects. Does anyone know: A. Is there some kind of product out there to do this? or - B. Is there some way to import them into a Windows event veiwer in a way that lasso (or snare for that matter) will see them as actual real event logs on that host and forward them to the loglogic device as syslog.

• Trouble with Windows 7

  Hi, I'm trying to virtualize an application for Windows 7 but am running into trouble: Application will run fine in Windows 7 if installed in the base. When it is virtualized, it will run on XP, but not on Windows 7. I have tried this in three ways: Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.0 Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.5 Captured on Windows 7 with ThinApp 4.5 Even when captured on Windows 7, it will not run on Windows 7 but will run on XP. When captured with a rival product, Altiris SVS, the virtualized app runs fine on Windows 7. Any idea's what could cause this behaviour? Looking at the trace file, you see that they are different right from the start when comparing Windows 7 and XP tracefiles. What could cause it to go in completely different directions? (And why does the tracefile on Windows 7 say: Operating System Unknown? Does everybody have that on Windows 7 even with 4.5?) The error message is: "Object variable or with block variable not set". We have a policy of only using two versions at a time and there are still SQL 2000 boxes around here somewhere.... • Inexpensive Remote Assistance software?

  Any recommendations for Remote Assistance software that does not require firewall modification for clients? To assist client with software problems and perform training, we currently use a tool called Remote Helpdesk to connect to their computers and guide them through the process. This tool was pretty cheap (~$400 onetime for 3 support staff), and worked great - the client's PC actually initiates the connection to us, so there's never any firewall issues (vs. Remote Desktop, VNC software, or many other similar tools). Unfortunately, the product doesn't work well with 64-bit O/S's and Vista in general (slows down by a factor of 10 or so). I am looking for alternatives that provide the same reverse connection capabilities to avoid firewall issues. The only solution I've found is WebEx's Remote Support, which is WAY too expensive ($449/month for us). Thanks for all the assistance!

• Sony Vaio CPU fan runs at full speed after installing Windows 8.1 preview

  I installed the Windows 8.1 preview on my Sony Vaio E Series 14P (http://www.sony.com.au/product/sve14a27cg) and now my CPU fan is running at full speed all the time. When I first start my computer it runs normally, but a few seconds after reaching the Windows login screen the fan speed will suddenly jump up to max. It's pretty loud, so I'm hoping there's a solution! I've tried updating my bios to the latest version but that didn't help. I've tried programs like SpeedFan, but that wasn't able to detect my CPU fan at all. My CPU usage and temperature is normal and doesn't warrant the max fan speed. • Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata

  I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides.   Here's what i'm wanting to do. I have a Acer Iconia A500 tablet. I want to plug it in, in the car, but it has a barrel plug and I don't want to buy an inverter. The car adapters are expensive for what they do. But since it's just a cable... wasn't sure if that really made a whole lot of difference since it's only 1.5 amps from the wall charger. Is it possible to use that usb cable through the powerbolt car charger, to charge the A500?

• CentOS vs. Ubuntu

  I had a web server that ran Ubuntu, but the hard drive failed recently and everything was erased. I decided to try CentOS on the machine instead of Ubuntu, since it's based on Red Hat. That association meant a lot to me because Red Hat is a commercial server product and is officially supported by my server's manufacturer. However, after a few days I'm starting to miss Ubuntu. I have trouble finding some of the packages I want in the CentOS repositories, and the third-party packages I've tried have been a hassle to deal with. My question is, what are the advantages of using CentOS as a server over Ubuntu? CentOS is ostensibly designed for this purpose, but so far I would prefer to use a desktop edition of Ubuntu over CentOS. Are there any killer features of CentOS which make it a better server OS? Is there any reason I shouldn't switch back to Ubuntu Server or Xubuntu?

  Hi, my task is to setup a MAMP webserver for our website in the easiest way so it can be managed by my colleagues without experience in server administration. MAMP PRO is an excellent solution, but some guys don't suggest to use it for serving external requests. Could you explain why it is bad (in details if possible) and how to make it secure enough to be a full-scale and not-only-local webserver? Is there a better solution? Update There is a discussion on the MAMP website. XAMPP developers say that one can make their product secure: The default configuration is not good from a securtiy point of view and it's not secure enough for a production environment - please don't use XAMPP in such environment. Since LAMPP 0.9.5 you can make your XAMPP installation secure by calling »/opt/lampp/lampp security«. Could you comment it?

• Biztalk Server 2006 64bit problem

  Hi, I am trying to install a 64-bit biztalk server 2006. However when I start my installation it asks if I want to get my .cab file from the internet or install it manually etc. Because of internet security issues here at our work we can't get it from the internet directly. So I downloaded it manually: BtsRedistW2k3EN64.cab, to be exact. However when I try to install this it complains about: This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor. I opened the cab file and found out that the file: SQLServer2005_ADOMD.msi was apparently the problem. So I thought I'd install the 64bit version of this msi then: SQLServer2005_ADOMD_x64.msi, however I get the same error. So atm I'm pretty stuck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot

• USB MFP print server that works with Windows x64?

  Right now, we are using the Longshine LCS-MFP101-2 to connect to our MFP device (printer/scanner combo) over LAN. However, the required driver (RMVUSB, Remote Virtual USB) cannot be installed on 64 bit Windows operating systems such as Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64. Since the distributor lists the product as "phased out", I do not expect any updated 64 bit drivers any time soon. :/ Because of that, I am searching for a relatively cheap SOHO MFP print server (1 USB port should be enough) which can be used with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. Do you have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks!

Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.

• Problems with kickstart script, partition info crashes deployment

  Hi, Currently testing cobbler, but have problem with the kickstart script when the partition information is loaded. Here is my ks: http://pastebin.ca/1824343 I can't figure out what is the problem with the partsection at all. Without it, it works. I've even tried autopart. If the entry is removed, it works, but of course I have to provide the installer with partition information. Under the kickstart an python exception is raised. I get a Errno 2 No such file or directory. My Apache logs states: File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/images/updates.img File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/disc1 File does not exist: /var/www/cobbler/links/CentOS-5.3-x86_64/images/product.img But without the part information, no error occours. What am I not seeing? Cobbler 2.0.3, imported the CentOS 5.3 x86_64 DVD, PXE booting from a Xen guest.

• F5/BigIP rule to redirect affinity-bound users from INACTIVE pool node to other ACTIVE node

  We have several server nodes set up for the end users of our system and because we don't use any kind of session replication in the app servers, F5 maintains affinity for users with the ACTIVE node the client was first bound to. At times when we want to re-deploy the app, we change the F5 config and take a node out of the ACTIVE pool. Gradually the users filter off and we can deploy, but the process is a bit slow. We can't just dump all the users into a different node because - given the update heavy nature of the user activities - we could cause them to lose changes. That said, there is one URL/endpoint - call it http://site/product/list - which we know, when the client hits it, that we could shove them off the INACTIVE node they had affinity with and onto a different ACTIVE node. We have had a few tries writing an F5 rule along these lines, but haven't had much success so i thought I might ask here, assuming it's possible - I have no reason to think it's not based on what we have found so far.

• What does the "Max Memory Size" on the new Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 CPU's mean?

  I just noticed in the specs of the new Intel Core i-series processors that there is a "Max Memory Size" that is usually pretty small -- anywhere from 8GB to 24GB. See here: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=41316 Core 2-based motherboards were just starting to roll out support for 32GB and greater memory sizes. Anyone have any idea what the Max Memory Size indicates? Is this the total limitation of the on-chip memory controller? Limitation per channel? Limitation per stick (e.g. density??)? Thinking of building a decent machine that needs lots of RAM, so I'm looking at the i7 860.
