• BackupExec Hyper-V availability (within BackupExec 2010 or seperate?)

  Hi, I have downloaded the trial of Symantec BackupExec 2010 but I am a little confused: The agent for Hyper-V is available and for sale ($1800 or something), but the trial of BackupExec tells me i can install the agents I need from the installer. Can I install a full version of BackupExec, providing I have the license, but also install a full version of the Hyper-V agent? Or do I have to download/buy this seperately? Is a trial version available for the agents? As is probably obvious from this thread, I am a bit confused about the business model of this product. Please clarify. Thanks

• How to solve Microsoft Office error 1402 on Windows 7?

  I have installed Microsoft Office on my new Windows 7 64-bit system. Recently, it encounter some error and I tried to re-install it. It wasn't successful. So, I have to use Microsoft Install Clean Up to uninstall Microsoft Office. When I tried to install it again, I received this message: Microsoft Office 2007 encountered an error during setup. Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key. {a bunch of long keys}. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Service for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see {a *chm file}. After that, I tried to run the setup as administrator but I ended up with the same error. So what should I do to solve this problem?

• Using Windows 7 drivers in Windows Server 2008 R2

  Maybe I should post this to http://www.serverfault.com. Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.

  Their products are storage systems similar to NetApp, but their "hook" is they provide automated tiered storage with the third tier being Cloud providers like Amazon and Azure. They have an interesting story in which they provide primary SAN/iSCSI storage to VMWare and Exchange and at the same time do snaphots to the Cloud. This provides a possible DR option if you have a second system at an alternate location. I was impressed, but I've never heard of them so I'm looking for input and advise on the product. • How can I exceed the 60% Memory Limit of IIS7

  Pardon if this is more stackoverflow vs. serverfault. It seems to be on the border. We have an application that caches a large amount of product data for an e-commerce application using ASP.NET caching. This is a dictionary object with 65K elements, and our calculations put the object's size at ~10GB. Problem: The amount of memory the object consumes seems to be far in excess of our 10GB calculation. BIGGEST CONCERN: We can't seem to use over 60% of the 32GB in the server. What we've tried so far: In machine.config/system.web (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="80" In web.config/system.web/caching/cache (sf doesn't allow the tags, pardon the formatting): privateBytesLimit = "20000000000" (and 0, the default of course) percentagePhysicalMemoryUsedLimit = "90" Environment: Windows 2008R2 x64 32GB RAM IIS7 Nothing seems to allow us to exceed the 60% value.   Hello everyone in serverfault. I am having a big problem at my job. I will let everyone know what I am using. I have two ibm x3690 servers with vmware esxi on both. Our product server has 8 vm on there. I have two lefthand san from HP. I have a watchgurd firewall. Our other site. I have one server over there ibm x3b90 sever. with one vm on there. I have a cisco 1700 router. and another watchgurd firewall. I have a vpn tunnel to my watchgurd firewall, to my cisco router. Site one works great. site two is having problems saving word documents and having problems printing in publisher 2007. Can someone please help?

• Are there any FIPS-140-2 certified solutions for Linux?

  I'm not even 100% certain what this involves, but my current understanding is this: use of only approved cryptographic algorithms for network traffic (easy, we use SSL and lock down the algorithms to only the really strong ones). Some form of physical data protection, involving disk encryption and physical tamper evident packaging. Obviously we're on our own if we need a tamper-proof product. But what about software for encrpytion. My guess is just using LUKS (although secure) will not be certified because it's open source (gov't seems a bit biased towards proprietary solutions here). Guardian Edge was mentioned by someone, but that appears to be complete Windows-based. So we need something like it, certified FIPS-140 compliant we can use on Linux.

• Would Microsoft Security Essentials be adequate protection?

  Is Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) adequate protection for my computer? What is the experience with this product? EDIT. On 2009-10-31 I found out about a comparison of AV Suites. MSE did VERY well. EDIT: One that I found interesting was "Raven", who mentioned that AV software has to hook deeply into the OS, and who better to design this than the designer of the OS. EDIT: My personal experience is that I like it, but I also use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. Each of them sometimes come up with one the others missed or ignored.

• Pass quoted argument string to Start-Process in PowerShell

  Hello I'm trying to very simply run an executable and pass a file path in as the first argument. In DOS, this would be the command: import.exe "C:\Some Path\With\Spaces.txt" By placing the path in quotes, the path is correctly parsed as the first token into the executable. In PowerShell I'm using this: $feeds = dir 'T:\Documents\Company\Product Development\Data foreach ($feed in $feeds) { start -FilePath import.exe -ArgumentList $feed.FullName } The problem with the Start-Process cmdlet in PowerShell is that it uses a string array for arguments, so the path is broken up and sent to the executable as separate tokens. Quotes in PowerShell force $feed.FullName to be treated literally. Double quotes "" make PowerShell not see anything in the argument list. "The argument is null or empty." it tells me. I expect that this is a known headache and has had a known workaround from day one. Thanks Luke

I write net share MyCompany_server___0.0.1-SNAPSHOT___server=E:\JavaWorkspace\Product\src\generated\server Then, this share is visible by other Windows machine in network shares of my machine, but not be accessed. Is there an option I forgot to set ? EDITED due to comment Accessing the share using an OpenSUSE machine brings the "The folder contents could not be displayed." message. • Asterisk, IAXModem & Hylafax how-tos?

  I'm trying to set up Asterisk and IAXModem to send faxes via T38 (Yes, I know I'm swatting a fly with a Buick...) However, since I'm trying to do something so small with a product so large, I'm having trouble finding samples or how-tos that show me how to set this up. I've got all three installed, and I THINK I have my IAXModem config correct. I'm pretty sure that I have Hylafax correct (I've used it with T38Modem) so, I need to know which of the Asterisk samples I need to use, and how to use them. I think I want to use some combination of iax.conf, iaxprov.conf, sip.conf and sip_notify.conf. But I'm not sure where to put them, or what to change... I'm sure that the answer is RTFM, but I'm not sure WHICH M, or where in it to R... thanks.

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Available Instance types for marketplace ami's

  I based my autoscaling AMI's on the Turnkey Linux nginx AMI from the marketplace. I am now unable to select any of the newer generation instance types; for instance, my autoscaling uses m3.large type but I'd really like it to use the c3.xlarge type but every time I try to create a c3.xlarge instance with my AMI I get errors; The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. My question is; Can I override this? I'm not using TKL support or any of their services, just the AMI. If I can't override it, do I have any other options besides creating a brand new AMI from scratch to use?

• Tape Supplier in Canada

  I'm not sure if it's kosher to ask.. but where can one purchase good quality / well priced backup tapes within Canada, online? I'm asking because my current vendor, DataWrite, has sent me bad tapes for the 3rd time in a row. I have no idea where they get their product but when I put an order in for 20 tapes and 2 cleaning tapes and I have to call them up 4 times over the next 2 weeks, I expect those tapes to work. Well, like I said, this is the 3rd batch that I'm sending back and we've been dealing with them exclusively for well over 5 years so I thought I'd ask the pool of knowledge. I'm currently looking for DAT72 tapes but soon will be looking for LTO-3 and LTO-4. Thank you

• Processor speeds on my machine don't live up to manufacturer hype

  Why am I not seeing the promised speed claims of processor manufacturers on my computer? Producers of processors claim that their product can perform so many thousands (or millions) of operations per second. And yet on my machine (4GB, 3500hz), the typical program (Word, Visual Studio etc.) takes at least 10 seconds to start. I've formatted my hard drive and ticked all the necessary boxes to optimize my machine and yet I'm not seeing the promised speeds. Say it takes Outlook ten seconds to load. How many millions of operations does it really go through in order to start up?

• Importing photoimpact .ab3 file database into another album program

  I have Photoimpact Album v5 which has now maxed out at 65,000 photos with database information. I can export the database and file information to a csv or dbase 4 file but I cannot find any way to import the information to a competative Photo Organization/Database product like Adobe Lightroom, ACDSee Pro3 or Photo Collector, etc... which is more modern, will work on Vista/Windows7, and not have any file limitations. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really cannot reinput data information for 65,000 photos manually. I would use any good software that I can transfer my files and data ifno to.

We are looking for something that will provide the following functionality (or achieve the same result, i.e. a cost-effective backup strategy for files stored in Rackspace Cloud Files): Work out which files have been added to or modified in a Rackspace Cloud account (since the last backup). Create a ZIP (or similar) of these files and store them in Amazon Glacier. Keep a record of which files are in which ZIPs. Ideally, restore either a single file or all files from Glacier back into Rackspace.

• Making a cracked or activated windows uncracked

  I have a pc which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image i downloaded and it is already activated. for validating genuine microsoft, i need to entet my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. What do? I googled stuff but because the keywords are too broad I couldn't find a useful tool DAZ doesn't work, activation button doesn't show up. When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error I used sfc /scannow Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved. • Windows SBS 2011 DNS Role (service) failing & needing restarting

  Have a Windows SBS 2011 with Exchange that is handling all DNS for the network. Since getting a 3rd party (Hardware & Support) to setup a recieving FTP service and restricting Exchanges memory useage for another 3rd party product (Stock software) the local network seems to periodically 'lose the internet connection'. Delving deeper I found that the DNS service is somehow failing/stopping without the actual service on the server reporting such (nothing in event logs). A simple restart of the 'DNS Role' on the server solves the problem. The manager onsite reports that he has to do this most days in the afternoon - yet not at the same time and other days it works fine without a restart being required. I'm unable (lacking sufficient SBS2011 knowledge) to diagnose this further, ideally I would like the DNS Role to report (and log) the failure, then automatically restart itself.

• Internal USB A Female to motherboard 4-pin that mounts internally

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this but that is physically mountable internally rather than on a cable? I'm planning on building a super low profile "gateway" pc that is dedicated to handling internet traffic in my home. I have a great 1U rackmountable chassis for an ITX motherboard, but I need the hard drive real estate for the additional NIC required to run a gateway (one onboard and one PCI). So the plan is to use a small 8GB USB Jump Drive for the OS inside the box (as to not have one hanging out the back. And although it's racked, I still don't want the jump drive flopping around internally, so I want it fixed somehow. I have an alternative idea where by I use a flush mount zap strap saddle and a zip tie to hold it in place, but that seems kind of like a hack.

• "broken" windows xp after disc replacement

  Windows xp pro OEM was installed on my machine, Disk was failing so I cloned it to a new disk (larger one). Now windows said that the hardware has changed significantly and I need to re-activate, and I would gladly do (got the product number on a sticker on the machine) - only that for running the activation process I need to be logged-in, but when I try to login it just automatically logs me out again :( I know my credentials are O.K. because I can connect to the machine remotely and also use sysinternals tools such as PsExec or PSList etc. on it from a remote machine by specifying user and pasword. Login via safemode does not work any differently then in normal mode... I tried to run rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk (as suggested in several places on the net) using PsExec but it did not seem to help... Is there any way out of this evil circle? [ can't log in because not activated - cant activate because not logged in ]

• Linux router and firewall with IP accounting

  I'm working on a project to replace my organisation's aging Slackware gateway/router/firewall machine in our colo rack. Previously we used rc.firewall but we are now looking for something more modern and easily configurable. The requirements are: Act as a gateway router & firewall Port forwarding to a Terminal Server in the colo IP/traffic accounting, preferably accessible via SNMP (already using cacti for other servers) Possibility of acting as a PPTP server & routing these connections Is not an out-of-the-box Cisco product (don't have the finances or support to maintain it) I'd prefer to use Ubuntu or some other Debian-based distro but something that integrates everything we're looking for is certainly an option if it offers all the desired features and is easy to configure. Is there a simple set of packages that will provide me with the Firewall & Accounting features, or am I best served with a custom-built distro / other solution?

• Norton Ghost usage, Linux? ISO? Server? MBR?

  Before evaluating Symantec/Norton Ghost to image partitions, I have a couple of questions about using this tool: In the product page, it only mentions Windows: Can Norton image Linux partitions as well? Can I burn an ISO to create/recover images? The ISO's I found seem only able to restore an image but not create one. Does it mean that images can only be created from within a running Windows? For Windows partitions: Does it support both regular and Server versions? Acronis doesn't image Server partitions in the regular version When restoring an image, does Norton give the option of including/excluding the MBR? Thank you.
