• Placing of copyright notice in source code

  I'm about to release a project of mine that I'm really proud of under the GNU GPL and I have some questions: Should one attach a copyright notice on each and every source code file from their project? I think it's a bit ridiculous to claim copyright on a 3 line abstract class. Should I attach a copyright notice only to really important source code files? Can I not attach the whole standard thingy? Because it's big and bulky and gets in the way... If so, is the variant below ok/enough? Copyright year firstname lastname. • Why can't mythtv backend see my HDHomeRun tuner?

  Ran a fresh install of Mythbuntu 12.04.1 32 bit. Went through the backend setup and was able to see my HDHomeRun Prime (HDHR3) device, scan, and detect channels. Cannot get to live TV on frontend. Backend log seems to indicate it's not detecting my tuner, even though I configured it in the setup. • We have a 200% increase of "organic" search traffic - how to figure out which keyword is causing this?

  So our Google Analytics are showing us that 200% increase of "organic" search traffic. Analytics are saying that search keyword is "(not provided)". We are wondering how to find out which keyword is causing this? We are monitoring all important keywords for our website. None of keyword is in first 5, so our "organic" serach traffic is modest. However, today we received 200% increase of "organic" search traffic but none of keywords we can think of moved a bit. We also did not change anything related to SEO. And what is interesting Google Webmaster shows no changes - ~2500 impressions and ~200 clicks. How to find out which "keyword" might be causing this spike?

• What is the difference between "Redirection" and "Pipe"?

  This question may sound a bit stupid, but I can not really see the difference between redirection and pipes. Redirection is used to redirect the stdout/stdin/stderr, e.g. ls > log.txt. Pipes are used to give the output of a command as input to another command, e.g. ls | grep file.txt. But why are there two operators for the same thing ? Why not just write ls > grep to pass the output through, isn't this just a kind of redirection also ? What I am missing ?

• Cannot login via Unity login screen after upgrade to 12.04

  Logging in via the shell accessed through Ctrl+Alt-F1 and logging in as guest via the graphical user interface work 0O When I try to log into my standard user account via the graphical interface, the screen flashes to black for a couple of seconds and bumps me back to a pristine login screen. Entering a wrong password for my user account yields the standard error message - my user account and credential verification seem to be OK. I suppose that my individual graphics configuration causes problems ... I'm not sure how to reset that. I've tried stopping the UI via sudo service lightdm stop executed sudo nvidia-xconfig and restarted the UI sudo service lightdm start to no avail. My workstation has a Nvidia GeForce 560-448 graphics card. I've tried getting this fixed with the latest Nvidia 64-bit drivers (cURL'ed from the official website), that is 295.49 and the latest beta driver 302.07. Anybody have an idea how to get this fixed? Your help is appreciated :)

• How can I monitor a website for malicious changes to the files

  I had an occasion recently where our website was compromised - a link farm was added to a couple of the pages on one occasion, and on another occasion, a large and nasty aspx file was put on the server. I won't mention the host's name (Hostway), but I was pretty annoyed that someone was able to do this. No, it wasn't a leaky password - around 10 sites hosted by HW with consecutive IP addresses got trashed. Anyway. What I need is a utility or service (preferably free) that takes a snapshot of my websites contents, and then regularly monitors the files (size and datestamp) for unauthorized changes or additions, and alerts me. I've used web services that monitor one file for changes, but I'm looking for something a bit more aggressive.

• 12.04 - how to install alsa 1.0.27, to resolve dell sound card microphone echo issue to local speaker?

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

• Game engine like Unity 3D that allow me to use .NET code

  I've been looking at Unity 3D for developing a 3D PC game and I really like the scene editor and how it simplifies the process of constructing 3D scenes, managing assets, animations, transitions etc. However, I don't want to restrict myself to using the Unity 3D scripts for handling every bit of game logic in the game. E.g. If I want to construct a RPG dialogue system I don't want to do it with unity 3d scripts - I'd like to use C#/.net. Also, I might want to use e.g. windows azure and sql azure as backend, and use 3rd party .net libraries such as reactive-extensions etc. Is there a .net engine out there that helps me with asset loading, animations, physics, transitions, etc. with a scene editor, but allow me to plug it into a visual studio .net project?   When writing a function that can have several different return values, particularly when different branches of code return different values, what is the cleanest or sanest way of returning? Please note the following are really contrived examples meant only to illustrate different styles. Example 1: Single return def my_function(): if some_condition: return_value = 1 elif another_condition: return_value = 2 else: return_value = 3 return return_value Example 2: Multiple returns def my_function(): if some_condition: return 1 elif another_condition: return 2 else: return 3 The second example seems simpler and is perhaps more readable. The first one, however, might describe the overall logic a bit better (the conditions affect the assignment of the value, not whether it's returned or not). Is the second way preferable to the first? Why?

• What has been your experience with paid support from Canonical ?

  I am considering buying "Ubuntu Desktop Support" from Canonical for 2 reasons: I have a couple of issues that I would like professional help with. ( Specifically a recurring kernel panic, and a slow wireless connection. ) I would like to lend a helping hand toward supporting Ubuntu financially. However, I am a bit worried that once I transfer the money, they will end up just referring me to the bug tracker on Launchpad. Also, free support options like this site have the pleasant property that they are open to the internet, meaning that if my issue gets fixed, it is more likely to help others with the same problem. What does paying for support from Canonical actually get you ?

• More confusion over SEO Cname and 301 redirect

  Previous answers on this topic don't really help me with my query, so any help appreciated for a bit of a newbie. I have a new domain "domain#1.mobi" Its hosted with godaddy and has a cname and forwarding, pointing it to "domain#1.elsewhere.us" It has no content. The content is all hosted on "domain#1.elsewhere.us" which is what Google is now listing in its results. I want Google to ignore that and only list "domain#1.mobi" in its listings. How do I achieve this?

• How to modify the default position of desktop icons

  Is it possible to modify the default desktop icons position so that icons move a little bit to right. If yes, how? As far as I know, there is no tweak for that in Nautilus. When I click "Organize Desktop by Name", the icons get aligned to the left of Desktop: that's fine, but they're too close to the launcher when it's in AUTO HIDE mode. So when Launcher is revealed, it comes over icons. Reproduce: Download some files from your browser or copy files/folders from a folder to the desktop, then these latter will be placed just like the screenshot. Their position is fine when the launcher is hidden, but when revealed, it hides a part of the icons. There is no problem when LAUNCHER AUTO-HIDE MODE is disabled. Thanks in advance.

However, before I can make 3D games, I need to learn 3D modeling for character design, level design, and some animation. What is the easiest 3D modeling software, compatible with Unity3d? I do not want to spend too much time learning the software. From what I've heard, Blender is a bit complicated to use. Maya and 3dsMax seem very powerful. Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't want to spend a lot of time learning.   I was trying to install JRE on my 64-bit ubuntu 10.04 installation. Just to be sure that that is what I really want, I need to run a .jar file. I downloaded java from this link. Then I chose linux x64 and downloaded the tar file, I extracted it and tried to compile the source code but had the error. I don't know whether I downloaded the wrong file or I ran the wrong commands in the terminal After I changed directory using the cd command to the extracted directory, I tried ./configure but I got this error: ./configure: command not found I know that there is an easier way to install java but I just want to understand how to install an application from source in linux as it seems that I will face this problem in the future. • Laptop buttons not working on a Dell Latitude e6400

  I have install Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit on my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. I have the latest bios version for my laptop (A32) which I downloaded from the official Dell website by checking updates that matches the service tag on my laptop. I'm having serious problems with all the mouse buttons on my laptop. The right-click button doesn't work at all under any circumstance. The left click button only work when clicking on icons in the left side-bar and in the top menu (like clicking on the power icon in the top-right corner or clicking on the file menu). However none of the buttons work in any of the applications even simple one like the file browser (home folder). For example when I try to click on a folder inside nautilus it doesn't work or when I try to click on the "x" close icon to close the window it also doesn't work. Can you help me figure it out?

• Need to know best way to utilize LVM to backup Ubuntu

  So I've had issues with Windows which forced me to install and learn Ubuntu as I'm fed up with MSFT. So now I need to know the most efficient/best way to image Ubuntu so that if I messed something up in one point in time I could always come back to the healthy point in time. During the install I saw an option for LVM and read what it is though I don't know how to utilize it to prevent a situation where I have to reinstall everything. Help? • Are the National Computer Science Academy certifications worth it?

  Hi to every one. I have a question regarding the real value of having NCSA's certifications. Today I reach their site and I easily passed the JavaScript certification within minutes, but I never reach questions related to Literal Javascript Notation (Json), closures or browser specific apis. This facts let me to doubt a bit of the real value of the test (and the proper certification you can have if you pay them $34), but maybe Im wrong and just earned a respected certification within the States for easy questions... in wich case I can spend some time doing other certifications on the same site. Did you have an NCSA certification and think is worth having it in your resume, or you know of a better certification program? thanks in advance, and looking forward to see your considerations.

• Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

• How to get scripted programs governing game entities run in parallel with a game loop?

  I recently discovered Crobot which is (briefly) a game where each player codes a virtual robot in a pseudo-C language. Each robot is then put in an arena where it fights against other robots. A robots' source code has this shape : /* Beginning file robot.r */ main() { while (1) { /* Do whatever you want */ ... move(); ... fire(); } } /* End file robot.r */ You can see that : The code is totally independent from any library/include Some predefined functions are available (move, fire, etc…) The program has its own game loop, and consequently is not called every frame My question is: How to achieve a similar result using scripted languages in collaboration with a C/C++ main program ? I found a possible approach using Python, multi-threading and shared memory, although I am not sure yet that it is possible this way. TCP/IP seems a bit too complicated for this kind of application.

• Accessing files in a directory without x-permission?

  I am having a bit of trouble understanding what the execute permission means for directories. Do I understand it correctly that anything in a directory for which a user does not have x-rights is inaccessible even if the things inside the directory gives specific rights to the user? Or will the user still have direct access to the things in the directory, but simply cannot list what is in the directory? (What I am really trying to understand is how safe a directory is from access from other users if they do not have x-permission for it.)
