  • Ubuntu 14.04 key arrow up is being pressed by itself

    Keyboard's up arrow key is keep pressing itself every few seconds. I tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 via boot cd, even before installation the arrow key was being pressed by itself. I tried to use Ubuntu first without installing it and then tried to install it from there, the issue seemed to be fixed. I was using the PC for months until out of the blue the issue came back. IT IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE! Thank you in advance.

  • Why does the login screen fail to appear?

    My system: Dell Precision T3500 nVidia Quadro NVS 295 Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 (3.2.0-32) Essential problem: On boot my system won't get past the splash screen. I can switch to another virtual terminal and log in, I can also ssh from another system -- so it appears that the problem might be with the display manager. How can I diagnose and fix this problem? More info: From a VT I can issue sudo lightdm restart, and this will bring up the login screen and and I can continue from there. So I do have access to my system.   • Does the EU cookie law apply to an EU site that is hosted outside of the EU?

    I have been reading up about this EU cookie law, and have also had in depth conversations with my girlfriend who is a solicitor/lawyer and with colleagues while building websites. While we are now working towards implementing a way to abide by the EU law, I have thought of something which no one really knows the answer to and has caused a few arguments. It's my understanding that any website in the EU must abide by these cookie laws, which is understandable. However, say if I were to have a .co.uk or .eu domain name pointing to a website which is hosted in America for example, do I still need to abide by the EU laws even though the website is hosted outside of the EU? One person I have asked has said that because the domain name is .co.uk or .eu (a European TLD) then the website is still accountable under EU law. Another person I have asked has said because the actual website is held outside of the EU, it doesn't actually have to bother with this law.

    --- This question is related to Ubuntu 12.10, since previous versions did not connect to network before login --- I had a bad boot today: the Ubuntu screen was blocked at startup time, after a green [OK] and a white blinking underscore. In recovery mode I figured out the problem: NetworkManager hung trying to connect to a wireless network that wasn't available anymore, and so I couldn't reach the prelogin level. Anyway: I really don't like that the pc connects to a network before the user logging in. How is it possible to disable it?

The USB disk boots (sort-of), but it gets stuck at the very first stage. A UNetbootin spash screen that keeps counting-down from ten to 0, and then restarts. The screen looks like this: Is there a way to make Windows boot from a USB image created on Linux?

    Which would be the best way to run a script upon GUI logoff, shutdown, hibernate, sleep modes? In 12.04 I think I did this in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.config, but on 13.10, the folder structure changed and when I create this script, The display manager wont even start upon boot. I am looking to implement a simple automatic truecrypt unmount command truecrypt -d but of course this would go for any script.

Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching.   • Should functions of a C library always expect a string's length?

    I'm currently working on a library written in C. Many functions of this library expect a string as char* or const char* in their arguments. I started out with those functions always expecting the string's length as a size_t so that null-termination wasn't required. However, when writing tests, this resulted in frequent use of strlen(), like so: const char* string = "Ugh, strlen is tedious"; libFunction(string, strlen(string)); Trusting the user to pass properly terminated strings would lead to less safe, but more concise and (in my opinion) readable code: libFunction("I hope there's a null-terminator there!"); So, what's the sensible practice here? Make the API more complicated to use, but force the user to think of their input, or document the requirement for a null-terminated string and trust the caller?

  • Why does ubuntu 11.10 freeze when playing video?

    I run ubuntu 11.10 on i5 CPU with 4GB RAM nvdia geforce GTS 250 connected to widescreen tv (HDMI) When using vlc, xbmc or boxee to play movies the system randomly freeze, the audio is looping the last words of the video file and nothing is responding. So I have to manually reset the system. Can anybody help? P.S. I forgot to mention the the log file was full of line regarding xbox 360 wireless receiver (I dual boot with windwos 7) so I unplugged it to see if that counts

  • Creating date based back entries for a blog and its site registration

    So I am showing a blog to a colleague and telling him how the author has been regularly blogging for over ten years now. My colleague tells me that anyone can register a domain name and start entries from say circa 2000. When I argued that the site registration date can easily show that the registration was done recently he put forward two arguments: The author can claim that he moved from an old domain name which was registered many years ago and lapsed. So he took the data and rebuilt it in the new site. The author can buy an expired domain which was on the internet for many years. I am not sure if these ways can work to con someone to believing you have been a blogger for over a decade. But I do not have enough expertise in the topic to refute him. So I thought I would ask the wise community here at StackExchange. Can anyone give me some insight?

  • Network doesn't work after installing Ubuntu 10.10. Is this a hardware failure?

    Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my dev box, making a dual boot with Windows XP. Before installation, everything worked fine, but now Windows XP cannot connect to the network saying that cable is not connected. I tried connecting it to different devices, and it always fails. Under Ubuntu I observe the same issue, but occasionally, usually it works and sometimes it can't find the network. Do you people think it's Ubuntu related, or is my network card broken?

    I asked this question in SuperUser one hour ago, then I know this community so I moved the question here... I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. I have installed the 11.10 version as dual boot by using Wubi tool on the Ubuntu website and can only use the operating system for about 5 minutes before it overheats and shuts off the machine. I have done my searches and seen many posts about overheating but cannot see one that I am able to apply to my particular case. Can anyone give me a steer on this please?

I am going through some simple tutorials, and in one of them, I draw a string onto the screen like so: // the following code is in the main file in the core project folder: // this is in the create() method: private SpriteBatch batch; batch = new SpriteBatch(); // this is in the render() method: batch.draw(batch, "Hello world", 200, 200); I am getting an error saying: The method draw(texture, float[], int, int) in the type SpriteBatch is not applicable for the arguments (SpriteBatch, int, int) So, LibGDX wants a float array to draw instead of a string? I tried install a new copy of 13.04 but my cpu doesn't support pae. I have a IBM Thinkpad T42 with a 1.7 gigahertx Cpu.
