  • Free iPhone weather API for the UK?

  • Best way to save user settings on client-side (javascript,jquery)

    I have a settings page that a user can enter some text and save directly to a combobox. Next time when page loads, combobox is filled in with the previous entered text. Also i have a modify button, so the user can delete or edit a value from the combobox. My question is, what's the best way to save to user settings on the client with javascirpt/jquery? I can only think of using an array and then (push/pop).,,Anyone got some bad experience with arrrays? thx

  • Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

    I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

    How do I make extra initializations on a modal dialog before calling DoModal(); ? I have a main Dialog (the one that is created automatically when I select new MFC Application in Visual Studio 2008 Professional). When I click a button on this dialog I want to open another dialog and set a CString value into a CEdit control. my code: ... void OnClickedButtonX(){ SecondDialogClass Dlg2; Dlg2.asocVar2Cedit.SetWindowTextW(L"my text"); Dlg2.DoModal(); } //asocVar2Cedit is the associeted control variable to the //CEdit control on the second Dialog (Right Click > Add Variable.. in VSC++) ... this code generates a "Debug Assertion" error in winocc...     Does anyone have any experience and/or tips wrt using Xcode to build winlib binaries on the Mac? As part of a Windows - Mac OS X crossplatform port i'm looking at an initial winelib port of the app before reworking the windowing to use Cocoa. None of the winelib tutorials ive seen so far mention anything other than command line builds using make files and winegcc, so Im wondering if its worth bothering at all trying to get an Xcode project built linking against winelib.

  • Developing ebooks- software?

    I've written a few documents for friends or blogs on software testing, job hunting and android development. I've been toying with the idea of producing some programming-related ebooks. However, developing these in Word or OpenOffice seems too amateurish compared to some of the fantastically produced books out there. I'm proficient in LaTeX but have never seen it used to produce ... 'marketable' works - just technical papers, maths, etc - which is great for code but not for distribution. Has anyone seen any good (preferably free / open source) tool or software for developing/compiling professional-looking marketable ebooks (probably to .pdf or .exe format - but I can take care of that part if need be)? And more importantly, ones that are easy to use to format any code samples or snippets that I may choose to include. Much appreciated.

  • Setting up Subsonic 3.0 on a ASP.NET web application on Visual Studio 2008

    I followed the steps on this tutorial video by at subsonic website. Everything seems to be self explanatory but when I copy the .tt files into my Visual Studio nothing happens. I have read other question relating to this problem on this website but they don't seem to fix this problem. I also went into the regedit to find out the generator key for .tt files and it is properly set. This is not a visual studio express or anything but a professional edition also I am trying to build a ASP.net web application and not a MVC application like the demo. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank You

    Hello, I need to know wether or not to buy the VS 2010 premium or not. I have the database project working on my own version of vs 2008 team suite. My coworkers only have 2008 professional. We are moving to VS2010 now. We do not have MSDN licenses for our company right now. We are looking to buy just the VS2010 no MSDN. It is very pricey to get 6 of VS2010 premium. We need to get our database into source control. We are currently email scripts around, and it very difficult to keep track off. Are there any non-microsoft solutions that would be the same features and be free?

  • Documentation of a software project

    I am working with a team that works on a very large software project, we have tons of Documentation that is written in MS WORD format with nohyperlinked indexes, no search ability. Everyday we waste our time trying to find the exact document or reference. I was thinking if there was way or even a professional tool that would convert all this into a wiki format and maybe with a little manual (painful) help be organised into something that improves the accessibility. I use Google Desktop Search to make my life a little easier but its not the best solution I just want to know if any of you faced similar problems and possible solutions to this issue.

    Hello, all the email addresses in my organization are in the format [email protected]. this was started when we were a small organization. Now we have grown and need to use something a bit more professional like [email protected] how can this change be implemented with minimal disruption? We currently only use smarteremail. Could recieving ONLY with the old and replying with the new be a solution..till we wean our recipients off the old email address? Any suggestions are welcome.   • Can GPU capabilities impact virtual machine performance?

    While this many not seem like a programming question directly, it impacts my development activities and so it seems like it belongs here. It seems that more and more developers are turning to virtual environments for development activities on their computers, SharePoint development being a prime example. Also, as a trainer, I have virtual training environments for all of the classes that I teach. I recently purchased a new Dell E6510 to travel around with. It has the i7 620M (Dual core, HyperThreaded cpu running at 2.66GHz) and 8 GB of memory. Reading the spec sheet, it sounded like it would be a great laptop to carry around and run virtual machines on. Getting the laptop though, I've been pretty disappointed with the user experience of developing in a virtual machine. Giving the Virtual Machine 4 GB of memory, it was slow and I could type complete sentences and watch the VM "catchup". My company has training laptops that we provide for our classes. They are Dell Precision M6400 Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 running at 2.54Ghz with 8 GB of memory and the experience on this laptops is night and day compared to the E6510. They are crisp and you barely aware that you are running in a virtual environment. Since the E6510 should be faster in all categories than the M6400, I couldn't understand why the new laptop was slower, so I did a component by component comparison and the only place where the E6510 is less performant than the M6400 is the graphics department. The M6400 is running a nVidia FX 2700m GPU and the E6510 is running a nVidia 3100M GPU. Looking at benchmarks of the two GPUs suggest that the FX 2700M is twice as fast as the 3100M. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html 3100M = 111th (E6510) FX 2700m = 47th (Precision M6400) Radeon HD 5870 = 8th (Alienware) The host OS is Windows 7 64bit as is the guest OS, running in Virtual Box 3.1.8 with Guest Additions installed on the guest. The IDE being used in the virtual environment is VS 2010 Premium. So after that long setup, my question is: Is the GPU significantly impacting the virtual machine's performance or are there other factors that I'm not looking at that I can use to boost the vm's performance? Do we now have to consider GPU performance when purchasing laptops where we expect to use virtualized development environments? Thanks in advance. Cheers, Dave
