• Can SysPrep (or anything else) be used to make a Win XP partition from another computer bootable?

  I've used Paragon Backup and Recovery Free as recommended to me in my other question, to backup my C: (Win XP) and D: (installed apps) partitions. Before taking the rather scary step of breaking the RAID 0 array on which it's currently installed, and restoring to one of the individual drives, I'd quite like to test the restorability of the imaged partitions. I've restored them on to a spare disk in another computer, which of course won't boot from them in their current state. Is it possible to use SysPrep (or another tool) on the restored partitions, to make it bootable?

• Distributed filesystem for automated offline data mirroring

  I'd like to achieve the following setup: Every time I connect my laptop to a local network, my partition gets automatically mirrored to a partition on my local server. I only want to mirror what has changed from the last time. (I understand that it is not a proper backup solution since there is no history of the changes, it'd be more like a non-persistent network RAID.) Is there a distributed file system that allows such a setup? I've done some searching and it seems to me that most distributed file-systems are focused on data availability and distribution, not duplicating them. I'd be thankful for suggestions. Edit: Sorry, I forgot to mention: I'm using Linux.

• One huge drive (network share) from many computers, with folder priority redundancy.

  Not sure if this exists, but I have a huge amount of data to store (about 5-50mb files) and as it is now, I have 5 computers, each with raid 5 providing about 6TB hard drive each. This is causing some problems with the software I am using (something home made) so I'm wondering, is there some software that I can install on all those computers that will mask it as one huge drive... Running windows on those computers, from Xp 64 bit to windows server 2008 I would also like to set a priority on each folder on the redundancy it has, some folders I can live without no online backup (I have a backup in a safe of that data) but some I need full online backup system if one hard drive fails. Something open source, as I try to use that as much as I can, but all ideas welcome.

• RAID10 Without BBU, With UPS

  My datacenter says that each rack has primary and backup power on each rack. I assume this means there is a UPS for each server. Therefore, do I have any need of getting a BBU for the following setup? Intel Cherry 520 SSD x 4 RAID 10 LSI-9260 with WRITEBACK CACHE ENABLED I have heard that without a BBU the data in the cache could be lost. Since my needs aren't mission-critical, I can afford to lose some data. But would the rest of the data on the HD be corrupted?

• USB Ports not working on new ASUS Z87 PRO motherboard

  3 of the six USB ports on the back on my new ASUS Z87 PRO motherboard are not functioning properly. They do seem to deliver power, just don't seem to function for data (devices attached in these ports are detected by windows, or usable in UEFI) I think I'm right in saying that the top 4 ports (3 of which aren't working) run off an additional USB controller (not from the Z87 chipset) if that makes any difference. I'm pretty sure that I'll just have to return it, but any advice on diagnosing the problem would be welcome.

To meet the needs, suppose a normal page of this application that has a query which it takes 10 miliseconds to response on a Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz proccessor with 2x2GB of DDR3 Ram (EntityFramework overheads are considered). And we will have about 2000 concurrent user at peek times. So, what is the best recommended specifications (CPU/RAM/RAID/...) for the server which will be host this application? -- Or -- How can I calculate that?

• Recommendations for SSD for server and database use?

  SSDs are a new technology and they are constantly improving. A lot of the posts here were posted in 2009 when SSDs where less mature and not as fast. What was recommend back then is probably out of date today because of better options. The SSD is used to hold SQL Server databases. Size is probably 128G. The database is used with a CMS and web server so web pages need to get their data and render as fast as possible. Which modern SSD is recommended for such a use? Is there an SSD better than Intel X-25 E/M in terms of performance/cost? (I am also evaluating cost between : RAM + UPS (semi persistent) vs SSD for same amount of gigabytes. No RAID is involved)

• Time sync in data center

  We currently have setting to sync time when spread is more than 5 mins, but it's getting to a point where some applications don't accept it. What is best practice out there to sync time for all windows and unix boxes to sync with time server or domain controller. Windows time service is not made for high accuracy less then 10 secs. • Occasional HDD Related Hangs

  I have an issue that seems to be disk related. Occasionally my system will block for 30 or so seconds and is mostly unresponsive. Those things already in memory requiring no disk access continue to function but those things requiring disk access (even small) hang. 30 seconds later everything is back to normal. I have 2 Samsung drives in RAID 0. I have 1 WD drive (has pagefile) I have an SSD used for caching (Intel Smart Response). This is a new install of Windows and the drives were fine in my old PC (~1 month ago). Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions to solve this one? Thanks in advance.

This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. • ESXI 4.0 Slow response in opening anything accross the network on a Virtual Server running Win2008

  Hi I recently installed a HP ML350G6 Server with Windows Small Business Server 200864bit, Exchange 2007. The server was running fantastically and we transferred all user data onto the new server and no problems for 2 weeks! We then installed SQL2008 and transferred the accounts package onto the server and this is where the problems started. Users are now complaining to open a work document can take 2 minutes and the same with regard to anything else. The server itself seems fine, the virtual server seems fine! No disk performance problems (doesn't go above 50% unless i really copy lots of things), no memory, (12Gb only using 7Gb) cpu (usage is low average about 15%) etc on both the VM and in Windows Task manager. I have made sure disk caching is enabled on the raid controller (which made no difference). Network cards are running 1Gb and plugged into HP GB switch. Please help!

  I have a Windows 2000 Server set up with RAID 5. I initially defined 2 136 GB logical disks 0 and 1. I have a small utility partition on disk 0 along with the C drive. I wish to extend the C drive to use disk 1 as well, which is now configured to drive D. I deleted drive D, but it is still in disk 1. I download partdisk.exe from MS, but am not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I know I need to use extend, but I think I need to remove disk 1 and somehow add the unallocated space to disk zero, but am not at all confident on how to do it.

  I have a ZFS RAID (zpool with three drives) hooked up to my Mac that I want to share in my LAN so that the XBMC client on my OUYA console hooked up to the television can read the drive and use it to stream my movies and television shows onto the television set. I've thought a fair bit lately about the best way of getting 4x or 6x of 2.5" hard drives into my rack and are right now currently slightly confused about would be the best (economical) solution. After scouting the market, I've found this type of disk array units that offers built in RAID and a lot of drive slots and a truckload of geek cred, but at a price that just isn't going to fit in my budget. I've also found these type of cute adapters that takes two 2.5" drives in one 3.5" slot, but I will obviously need a chassie with a lot of 3.5" spaces in order to make it work. So what is the most economical way to house my harddrives in my rack?

  I had a problem with a Win2k8 Domain Controller and had to restart it. It restarted with no issues and reached the "PRESS CTRL + DEL TO LOGON" screen. And so I did a usual logon with an administrative domain account and it started to apply group policy.   I like to have best io performance as well as good capaciyy and reliability out of a server that hosts a busy forum, which involves loads of static files download. I am wondering what is the best plan to format and use the disks given that the server has only 4 disk bays and I have 2 SSD and 2 SATA disks at hand. • Xen: How to install bootloader for domU (guest os) ?

  I tried to install with "grub-install" grub for guest os (which is debian) from host (centos). Tried with chroot, tried with deboostrap, tried with netinstaller. Centos is running on two raid hdd's,under LVM. Lvm volumes are created everything is formated and works. Only bootloader problem left. Netinstaller just throws me a window with error that grub can't be installed, debootstrap instructions is not clear for me in here, grub-install doesn't work in chroot, and out of chroot (grub-install /dev/mylvm/partition) Please can somebody write how to install grub for domU (guest) os from centos?

• Hard drive partition size wrong. How do I resize without loss of data?

  $ fsck fsck from util-linux 2.20.1 e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011) The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 610471680 blocks The physical size of the device is 536870911 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! It should be 1 partition but it now shows 2.2tb partitioned and .3tb unpartitioned How do I make the first partition correctly be 2.5tb without destroying whatever is in either partition? I did not raid or anything. My devices have been getting repeatedly corrupt by thunderstorms. Looks like people recommend doing something like in other places. sudo resize2fs /dev/sdc1 610471680
