• XNA Load/Unload logic (contentmanager?)

  I am trying to make a point-and-click adventure game with XNA, starting off simple. My experience with XNA is about a month old now, know how the classes and inheritance works (basic stuff). I have a problem where I cannot understand how I should load and unload the textures and game objects in the game, when the player transitions to another level. I've googled this 10 times, but all I find is hard coding while I don't even understand the basics of unloading yet. All I want, is transitioning to another level (replacing all the sprites with new ones). Thanks in advance

• How is this paradigm/style called?

  I have the following situation: I'm developing an add-in for a UML modeling tool. The models that can be created by the user are stored inside the main application and a limited access to the models is given through its API. However, the add-in has a lot of callbacks for events that are triggered by the main application, when changes to the model occur by the user. Since the models are already stored once in the main application, I considered it not practicable to duplicate the models in the add-in, which leads to the fact that I have only behavior in the add-in, rather than having a state. This behavior is mainly expressed by static functions, that are organized in functional cohesive classes. The callbacks for the events have always references to the model elements relevant for the specifc event that ocurred. First, it seemed to me that this is a procedural style in general, but procedural style doesn't consider events/callbacks, so this boils down to the question. How is this programming style called?

• Should the networking of my game be a component or a service?

  I am working on a windows game and I am trying to understand the XNA GameComponents and GameServices classes and use. From what I understand about a component is that it has an Update method that gets call in every frame, and a service can be referenced from other components if needed. So the way I think a network component would work is that in its Update method it would receive and send data. It probably makes sense to receive the network data once per frame, but it doesn't for sending it. Shouldn't the game send its own updates to others the moment it has it to cut down on lag?

  This is a question most of us have faced while programming. Getting stuck! It might be a programmatic problem or tool problem, most of us eventually face it. You know something is supposed to work some way but just doesn't. You tried a number of things to solve it but isn't helping and you are not sure why. I once remember being stuck hours at programming job. Eventually I figured out for some reason or other my IDE wasn't recompiling my new changes in some of the classes .This is just an example but I am sure most you have faced similar situation. So how would you go about solving it if you didn't have access to Google or Stack Exchange? Lets be honest, using internet you aren't solving the problem, somebody else is doing it for you. So if you didn't have access to internet or a friend who might help, how would you go about solving it?

• How do you deal with monotony of certain tasks? [on hold]

  I love programming methods, and functions. The if {}, while {}, etc... logic behind them is so much fun. I also love making commits, merging branches, solving merge conflicts. Unfortunately these activities usually require that I create classes which I find tedious and monotonous. The simple action of defining properties, is getting in the way of me writing the logic on what to do with those properties. I can't be alone here there has to be a part of coding for everyone that they dread or at least severely dislike doing compared to other parts of coding. How do you deal with the code based tasks that you find tedious?

  Hi, I have situation in with I stucked and don't know way out. The problem is in my bigger model, but I have made small example which shows the same problem. I have 4 tables. I called them SuperParent, NamedParent, TypedParent and ParentType. NamedParent and TypedParent derives from superParent. TypedParent has one to many association with ParentType. I describe mapping for entities using queryView. The problem is then I want to get TypedParents and Include ParentType I get the following exception: An error occurred while preparing the command definition.   My problem is a little confusing. I have 2 servers (Windows Server 2008 R2) with MSMQ installed and I want to use Server B to consume a MessageQueue on Server A. When I try to Receive it always throws a message error: "Access to message queuing system is denied.". IP between them. Server A: 172.31.23.130 Server B: 172.31.23.195 FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource (It's working for Sends) I can ping each server from the other; The firewall is disabled; The "queuesource" has Full Control to "Everyone", "Anonymous Logon", "Network", "Network Services"; Journal is disabled; Authentication is ok; The queue is Transactional. My code in .Net C# is basically like this: MessageQueue _sourceQueue = new MessageQueue(); _sourceQueue.Path = "FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource"; _sourceQueue.Receive(); // << here throw an exception. • Diagnosing permission problems with Cobian Backup to network share

  I'm running the latest Cobian 11. I have a Synology DS412 NAS. All of my machines (Mac and Windows) access this just fine when I'm logged in and I browse to it manually. I have Cobian installed as a service on two Windows machines: WinXP SP3 and Win7 x64. On both machines, the service is set to log on with my user account which is in the Windows administrator group. Backups on both machines fail with the message "Couldn't create the destination directory "\nas1\backups\foo\bar\": The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". I have tried setting the NAS's share to allow anonymous read/write access but it made no difference. Although I want the backups to run unattended in the middle of the night, I have tested them by running them manually while I'm logged in but no luck. Before starting that, I make sure that I can browse to the NAS with Explorer to ensure that any authentication session with Windows and the NAS has not expired. Still no luck. I have tried creating that destination directory both on the NAS before the backup and deleting it so the backup job could create it with the client's credentials but no luck. The usual answer in the Cobian support forums is that there is a permission problem. I agree. But at this point, what can I do to diagnose this further?

• SQL Server 2008 Cluster Installation - First network name always fails

  I'm testing failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 to host a SQL Server 2008 installation using this installation guide. My base cluster is installed and working properly, as well as clustering the DTC service. However, when it comes time to install SQL Server, my first attempt at installation always fails with the same message and seems to "taint" the network name. For example, with my previous cluster attempt, I was installing SQL Server as VSQL. After approximately 15 attempts of installation and trying to resolve the errors, e.g. changing domain accounts for SQL, setting SPNs, etc., I typoed the network name as VQSL and the installation worked. Similarly on my current cluster, I tried installing with the SQL service named PROD-C1-DB and got the same errors as last time until I tried changing the name to anything else, e.g. PROD-C1-DB1, SQL, TEST, etc., at which point the install works. It will even install to VSQL now. While testing, my install routine was: Run setup.exe from patched media, selecting appropriate options After the install fails, I'd chose "Remove node from a SQL Server failover cluster" and remove the single, failed, node Attempt to diagnose problem, inspect event logs, etc. Delete the computer account that was created for the SQL Service from Active Directory Delete the MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER folder from the shared data drive The error message I receive from the SQL Server installer is: The following error has occurred: The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F) Along with hundreds of the following errors in the Application event log: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 28000; native error = 4818; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'. No matter what I try, it comes up in SQL Profiler as a big mess :-). I have two tables: Users and UsersProjects. The goal of this query is to list all the users who are working on projects with the specified user. Here is the query as I have it written in SQL. It's a subquery, but I don't know of a way to simplify it further, but I'm open to suggestions there as well.   Hi I occasionally run into the problem that an application exception is thrown during the WCF-serialization (after returning a DataContract from my OperationContract). The only (and less meaningfull) message I get is System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException : The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly. without any insight to the inner exception, which makes it really hard to find out what caused the error during serialization. Does someone know a good way how you can trace, log and debug these exceptions? Or even better can I catch the exception, handle them and send a defined FaulMessage to the client? thank you

• No Properties path set - looking in classpath

  For whatever reason my project has decided it cannot find my transaction.properties file. It is located in the : src/main/resource However it looks in looks in target/classes/ The file also resides yet throws the errors(see below) These all seem to stem from the whole in the init of code I have no acces to which is always fun. We used to have the following stuff : class Blah { float[][] data; public float[] GetDataReference(int index) { return data[index]; } } For various reasons, I have replaced this jagged array version with a 1 dimensionnal array version, concatenating inner arrays. My question is : how can I still return a reference to a sub array of data ? class Blah { float[] data; int rows; public float[] GetDataReference(int index) { // Return a reference data from offset i to offset j; } } I was thinking that unsafe and pointers stuff may be of use, is it doable ?

• Objective-C++ compiles for iPhone, but not simulator

  I have a C++ library I want to add to my iphone project. In one header file I declare @class a { cppvirtualclass V; } This compiles fine for the iPhone device with Release settings. However it refuses to compile for the Simulator with or without debug info. It give the error error: type 'V' has virtual member functions. Is there a way out of this or do I have to define only concrete C++ classes?

  Hello, I would like to know if is there any easy way to test actionscript by using some kind of application like ruby's irb or javasctip spidermonkey where you can just open up your terminal and type the code straight away. This would be a good time saver when speaking of actionscript, since to test some syntaxes, classes, etc. you would need to compile it via fsch. but still not a good option just for quick testing, etc...
