• Can I use dis-similar HW for Win2008r2 DFS-R

  The setup: Windows 2008R2 Ent on two machines. The roles on each server will include File Servers and DC's. The machines come from two different vendors (Dell/HP) The Dell is an Athlon and the HP is an Intel. Both have roughly the same speed CPU and 8GB of RAM. They have different Raid controllers, and more or less the same amount of disk space (roughly 6TB.) Can the servers use different types of hardware? Is there any documentation about this? The last question I have is about the network. Can DFS-R be forced to use a differen subnet from the regular network?

• slow software raid

  I've got software raid 1 for / and /home and it seems I'm not getting the right speed out of it. Reading from md0 I get around 100 MB/sec Reading from sda or sdb I get around 95-105 MB/sec I thought I would get more speed (while reading data) from two drives. I don't know what is the problem. • I can't write to a folder which I'm a member of

  I'm trying to setup folder access to a group so that all members of that group can create/edit/delete files within the folder. # create my group and add a member sudo addgroup dev sudo adduser martyn dev Now, logged in as "martyn", check my user has been added to "dev" group groups martyn martyn : martyn dev Now I want to change the group ownership of my project folder so all members of that group can edit it and files/folders within it. sudo chgrp -R dev myproject Just to check: martyn@localhost:/var/www$ ls -l total 4 drwxrwxr-x 3 dev dev 4096 May 31 15:53 myproject Now here's where it fails. I want to create a file within myproject (logged in as "martyn", a member of "dev"): vi myproject/test ..but when I try to save the file I get the following error: "myproject/test" E212: Can't open file for writing Why, as user "martyn" which is a member of "dev", can I not write this file? Even if I create the file so it exists, change the ownership to "dev" then try to edit and save - I get the same error.

• VirtualBox error with Ubuntu virtual machine

  I am trying to work on a coding project and cannot open my Ubuntu virtual machine with Oracle VM VirtualBox. I took a snapshot yesterday at about 11, and it was working fine. Several times I closed and reopened it. Today when I tried to open it, I kept getting the error below. Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit. VM cannot start because the saved state file 'C:\Users\Tyler\VirtualBox VMs\Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit\Snapshots\2014-01-30T19-59-05-976647800Z.sav' is invalid (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND). Deleted the saved state prior to starting the VM. I tried deleting the file as it said, but none of the snapshots would open still. The file is still in my recycling bin. What can I do? Also, I took the 1/31 snapshot today before I deleted the previous one.

• Where can I find a good, tab-less privacy filter for my monitor?

  Hi, I have an ASUS laptop with a 14" monitor (12" by 7" to be more specific), and I've been looking for a decent privacy filter that I can use with for, yet I couldn't find any. The problem with the filters I've found is that they all use those ugly "tabs" that you have to stick on the sides of your monitor in order to slip the filter in. I'm looking for ones that are like HP privacy filter, where parts of it goes under the frame of the monitor to hold it in place. Too bad HP doesn't sell filters that fit my screen. So, any idea where I can get a good privacy filter? Your help is so much appreciated

  When I press Ctrl-C in any pseudoterminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, rxvt, text console and SSH) in Karmic Koala, the string ^C gets echoed to the terminal in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. This hasn't happened in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. I'd like to get rid of the extra ^C. Example: $ cat foo foo ^C $ _ I got the above by typing C, A, T, Enter, F, O, O, Enter, Ctrl-C. I want to get rid of the ^C, and get this for the same keypresses: $ cat foo foo $ _ I tried setting stty -echoctl, which created a single-character HT (or a box with Unicode 0003 in it) instead of the ^C.   I've an 500 GB Seagate External Hard Disk (NTFS) . Currently, I can't open it at Windows. Thus, I've tired with chkdsk command .. but still it stopped and can't continue checking disk.. Also I've tired with fsck on Mac . • Portable Display doesn't work anymore

  My USB portable monitor will not work since I installed the hard drive onto an HP laptop. I have installed all the new hardware drivers and do not have any more device issues in device manager view. My old laptop was a lenovo. The new one is an HP. The system seems to recognize devices that I connect via, usb but the portable display still does not show anything on the screen. It is probably a conflict in the registry but I'm not sure how to find it and the Power User does not have the luxury of letting me troubleshoot for hours to isolate the problem.

• Can't unlock locked screen, in Ubuntu 12

  After locking the screen (with a keystroke bound to xlock -nice 8 -mode blank), I can unlock the screen as expected, but only within a few minutes. After being locked overnight, when I hit a key (even Ctrl+Alt combos), the screen stays black with just a brief white flash across the middle of both monitors. The workaround is to ssh in from another host and restart X. Some months ago, this happened every few weeks. By now it happens almost every morning. How do I even start to diagnose this? What might I look for in log files? (The intermittency is particularly troubling.) Failing that, is there an alternative to xlock aka xlockmore? Hardware: 3-year-old HP minitower, GEForce 9800 GT, two Asus LCD monitors. Software: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS. Window manager awesome-wm. NVidia driver 304.88. XLock version xlockmore-5.31.

  I am running cpanel cPanel 11.25.0 on CentOS and have intermittment email delays (both coming and going) for a few specific domains. Emails from this server as well as major providers such as gmail, etc., do not suffer these delays. Any help with troubleshooting this issue? • Linux: find out what process is using all the RAM?

  Before actually asking, just to be clear: yes, I know about disk cache, and no, it is not my case :) Sorry, for this preamble :) I'm using CentOS 5. Every application in the system is swapping heavily, and the system is very slow. When I do free -m, here is what I got: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 3952 3929 22 0 1 18 -/+ buffers/cache: 3909 42 Swap: 16383 46 16337 So, I actually have only 42 Mb to use! As far as I understand, -/+ buffers/cache actually doesn't count the disk cache, so I indeed only have 42 Mb, right? I thought, I might be wrong, so I tried to switch off the disk caching and it had no effect - the picture remained the same. So, I decided to find out who is using all my RAM, and I used top for that. But, apparently, it reports that no process is using my RAM. The only process in my top is MySQL, but it is using 0.1% of RAM and 400Mb of swap. So, finally, the question is - if someone has any ideas how to find out what process is actually using the memory so heavily?

  I have console access to an embedded linux device. This device has flash memory part of which is partitioned as a FAT filesystem. Its running linux-2.6.31. Does xampp or apache have any download size limit or something? Tested with a smaller file , the problem is still present. It just doesn't let me download any file from the server.!!! • Printing Booklet Page Size in Adobe Reader 4-in-1

  So I have a 70 page pdf document that I'm trying to condense to a small booklet. I tried creating a formula to manually to perform it but it got ugly fast. 35,36,34,37,17,54,16,55,33,38,32,39,15,56,14,57,31,40,30,41,13,58,12,59 29,42,28,43,11,60,10,61,27,44,26,45,9,62,8,63,25,46,24,47,7,64,6,65 23,48,22,49,5,66,4,67,21,50,20,51,3,68,2,69,19,52,18,53,1,70 Once I print the booklet I should be able to cut the sheets in half and set the bottom half behind the top and staple it for a simple book. Which means Page 1 should have pages 35,36,17,54,34,37,16,55 Page 2 should have pages 33,38,15,56,32,39,14,57 And several pages later Page 9 should have pages 19,52,1,70,18,53 But manually doing this is a headache and it seems like the booklet function should contain functionality that can perform this.   I've ordered a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 900 HD video/tv capture unit. It is mainly for use with my HP desktop running Windows 7 Professional, but I will want to use it occasionally with my partner's HP laptop running Vista Home Premium. The latter has an HDMI output which works perfectly with my LG 42" LCD TV, enabling display of BBC iPlayer and other catchup services. Will the live or recorded HD signal from the WinTV-HVR 900 HD connected to the laptop's USB input be output on the laptop's HDMI socket as HD? Come to that, will SD content be output? The reason I ask is that I had a problem with a Pinnacle unit which displayed OK on the laptop's screen but not on the TV screen (which did display all the normal Windows material). I've tried the Hauppage website, but it doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the WinTV-HVR 900 HD!

• How to increase the volume gain when viewing online flash video?

  When watching online Flash videos on Youtube, Dailymotion, etc... sometimes the videos are recorded at low volume. The thing is that, I have a HP Notebook with good enough audio volume, but when I watch these "low volume" videos the sound level is really low, even when I have the volume at 100%. So I am looking for a way to increase the volume gain (like VLC player where you can increase it to 200%), BUT while watching it live on Youtube... that is, I don't want to download the video on my PC. Is there a software that can do that? Maybe an advanced flash video player that integrates to browser? or some other software to increase the volume gain overall on my laptop? • How can I prevent my computer from waking up accidentally?

  When I put my computer into sleep mode, it will wake up while I'm away from it. There's nothing near the computer that could move the mouse or accidentally press a button and I have no idea what might be causing it. I tried checking what woke it, apparently LASTWAKE only tells me that it has been in sleep mode, not what woke it up. I also couldn't find anything in my Power Options regarding Sleep that seems off. Poking around in the Event Viewer I notice the following: The Power-Troubleshooter event at the top notes the following: The system has returned from a low power state. • ntp.conf sync to local machines

  I have 2 linux machines, they do not have internet connectivity or any other means of getting an external clock. I need one of them to act as the "master"/server and the other machine to sync it's clock to that server. It's not important that the time is correct, it's only important that the time is the same on these 2 machines. So, give I have a server (192.168.1.10) and a client (192.168.1.11), how do I set up /etc/ntp.conf on these 2 machines respectivly ?

• Why Windows Media Center (Vista 32-bit) unable to record TV Series?

  I can record individual shows just fine, but trying to setup the recording of a Series throws an error (something like, "unable to schedule, try restarting Media Center", pops up in the bottom right of the screen). Trying to access the "Other Showings" menu causes Media Center to crash ("check for a solution online" dialog comes up). The machine is a fresh reinstall of 32-bit Windows Vista from the HP recovery CDs, plus all Microsoft updates and service packs. Hardware: HP s3220n, AMD X2 5000+, 2GB RAM, 300GB free space on disk. Media Center came bundled. The "Media Center update for Vista" failed to install (it says, not appropriate for my computer). Any ideas? Thanks

  I've recently installed mod_fastcgi and Apache 2.2.   Currently I have a 2mb/s ADSL connection. I signed up for the service more than five years ago. Has technology improved much during that time to allow for greater speed using the same wires? The building I live in is quite old and the lines aren't very good. They weren't able to support 6mb/s service back then. Now I notice that the lowest speed offered by my telco is 10mb/s.
