• deciding between subprocess, multiprocesser and thread in Python?

  I'd like to parallelize my Python program so that it can make use of multiple processors on the machine that it runs on. My parallelization is very simple, in that all the parallel "threads" of the program are independent and write their output to separate files. I don't need the threads to exchange information but it is imperative that I know when the threads finish since some steps of my pipeline depend on their output. Portability is important, in that I'd like this to run on any Python version on Mac, Linux and Windows. Given these constraints, which is the most appropriate Python module for implementing this? I am tryign to decide between thread, subprocess and multiprocessing, which all seem to provide related functionality. Any thoughts on this? I'd like the simplest solution that's portable. Thanks.

• Passing a non-iterable to list.extend ()

  Hello, I am creating a public method to allow callers to write values to a device, call it write_vals() for example. Since these values will by typed live, I would like to simplify the user's life by allowing them type in either a list or a single value, depending on how many values they need to write. For example: write_to_device([1,2,3]) or write_to_device(1) My function would like to work with a flat list, so I tried to be clever and code something like this: input_list = [] input_list.extend( input_val ) This works swimmingly when the user inputs a list, but fails miserably when the user inputs a single integer: TypeError: 'int' object is not iterable Using list.append() would create a nested list when a list was passed in, which would be an additional hassle to flatten. Checking the type of the object passed in seems clumsy and non-pythonic and wishing that list.extend() would accept non-iterables has gotten me nowhere. So has trying a variety of other coding methods. Suggestions (coding-related only, please) would be greatly appreciated.

• WinForms: How do I simulate button behavior on an image?

  I have an extension of the winforms TabControl, it's draws an X on each tab to allow the user to close the tab. How can I similate button look&feel on that image? It's not a button, it's not even an image control. It's just been drawn there. Is there a way to draw an inset border on MouseDown and Raised on MouseUp? Would I be better off generating another image, for the "inset" phase? anyone done this before? • How to get query result even if JOIN hasn't found any results?

  I want select data for user, and join another info from other table that related to the user. The problem is that this extra data not always exist for any user, just for few. How can I write a query that will return NULL for not found data, instead just return null for the whole query? SELECT a.*, b.* FROM user AS a LEFT JOIN extra AS b ON (a.userid = b.userid) WHERE a.userid = {$userid} LIMIT 1 When extra data found for the user, I get the resource as expected. If not, I get NULL for the whole query. Bottom line, I don't care if "extra" exist for the user or not, if yes - select it as well, if not - ignore that.

  I have two models in relation one-to-many: class Question(db.Model): questionText = db.StringProperty(multiline=False) class Answer(db.Model): answerText = db.StringProperty(multiline=False) question = db.ReferenceProperty(Question, collection_name='answers') I have front-end implemented in Flex and use pyamf to load data. When i try to load all answers with related questions all works as desired and I can access field answer.question however in case of loading questions (e.g. by Questions.all() ), 'question.answers' remains empty/null (though on server/python side I can revise question.answers without problem - probably after lazy-loading). So is it possible to load all questions along with answers ? (I know this is possible in JPA Java api but what about python ?) Shoud I use additional setting, GQL query or django framework to make it work ?

  I have a 1x8 matrix of students where each student is a 4x1 matrix of scores. Something like: SCORES S [62, 91, 74, 14] T [59, 7 , 59, 21] U [44, 9 , 69, 6 ] D [4 , 32, 28, 53] E [78, 99, 53, 83] N [48, 86, 89, 60] T [56, 71, 15, 80] S [47, 67, 79, 40] Main question: Using sigma notation, or some other mathematical function, how can I get a 1x8 matrix where each student's scores are summed? # expected result TOTAL OF SCORES S [241] T [146] U [128] D [117] E [313] N [283] T [222] S [233] Sub question. To get the average, I will multiply the matrix by 1/4. Would there be a quicker way to get the final result? AVERAGE SCORE S [60.25] T [36.50] U [32.00] D [29.25] E [78.25] N [70.75] T [55.50] S [58.25] Note: I'm not looking for programming-related algorithms here. I want to know if it is possible to represent this with pure mathematical functions alone.

  Hello everyone: This is a CSS related question, I got one good answer from my previous question, which suggested to use some CSS code like overflow:auto together with a fixed height container. And here is my actual implementation : on uni server Please follow the instructions on screen and buy more than 4 kinds of tickets. If you are using IE8, Opera, Safari, Chrome, you would notice that the lower right corner of the page now has a vertical scroll bar, which scrolls the content inside it and prevent it from overflowing. That's what I want to have in this section. Now the problem is, this would not do in FireFox 3.6.2. Am I doing something not compliant to the CSS standard or FireFox has its own way of overflow control? You can inspect the elements on screen, and all controlling functions are done in one javascript using jQuery. All CSS code are kept in a separated file as well. According to the professor, FireFox would be the target browser, although the version was set to 2.0...

  The Django documentation on tests states: For a given Django application, the test runner looks for doctests in two places: The models.py file. You can define module-level doctests and/or a doctest for individual models. It's common practice to put application-level doctests in the module docstring and model-level doctests in the model docstrings. A file called tests.py in the application directory -- i.e., the directory that holds models.py. This file is a hook for any and all doctests you want to write that aren't necessarily related to models. Out of curiosity I'd like to know why Django's testrunner is limited to the doctests in models.py, but more practically I'd like to know how one could expand the testrunner's doctests to include (for example) views.py and other modules when running manage.py test.   I have coded a "website screen scraper" and want to sell it commercially. I know that webpages scraped by the screen scraper are restricted to be scraped by the webmaser of that website. The robots.txt file of the website says that its webpages must not be scraped. So my question is whether selling that screen scraper is a crime or using that screen scraper is a crime in legal terms. I know that this question is related to law but I thought the software experts on SO must also have answer to this question.

• Star-schema: Separate dimensions for clients and non-clients or shared dimension for attendants?

  I'm new to modeling star schemas, fresh from reading the Data Warehouse Toolkit. I have a business process that has clients and non-clients calling into conference calls with some of our employees. My fact table, call it "Audience", will contain a measure of how long an attending person was connected to the call, and the cost per minute of this person's connection to the call. The grain is "individual connection to the conference call". Should I use my conformed Client dimension and create a non-client dimension (for the callers that are not yet clients) this way (omitting dimensions that are not part of this questions): Or would it be OK/better to have a non-conformed Attending dimension related to the conformed Client dimension in this manner: Or is there a better/standard mechanism to model business processes like this one?

  I am using clojure.contrib.sql to fetch some records from an SQLite database. (defn read-all-foo [] (with-connection *db* (with-query-results res ["select * from foo"] (into [] res)))) Now, I don't really want to realize the whole sequence before returning from the function (i.e. I want to keep it lazy), but if I return res directly or wrap it some kind of lazy wrapper (for example I want to make a certain map transformation on result sequence), SQL-related bindings will be reset and connection will be closed after I return, so realizing the sequence will throw an exception. How can I enclose the whole function in a closure and return a kind of iterator block (like yield in C# or Python)? Or is there another way to return a lazy sequence from this function?

• CodeIgniter model debugging errors

  I am new to CodeIgniter, and I need a way to get more meaningful error messages. Specifically I am having trouble with some model relationships, but the error is vague. I am willing to try/install anything since I dont know how to fix this relationship. Is there a way to specify how verbose an error message is? Also, this could be related to DataMapper, but I cant tell. I dont care if they are logged or in the browser. In my browser error reads: An Error Was Encountered Unable to relate X with Y. Any more info would be great... which class, line number, a stacktrace. Increasing the log threshold did not help.

  My code is working fine in FireFox but my users are restricted to IE. Basically I have <ol><li> <span class="main"> <span class="test1"></span> <span class="test2"></span> <span class="test3"> <span id="test4"></span> <span id="special" class="special"> <span class="test4">TEXT</span> </span> </span> </li></ol> Basically, in IE when I try and make the id="special" have rounded corners - i get a distorted view. I think its something related to problems with referencing li elements using jQuery('#special').corner('5px'); Could anyone help :) ?

• getting window screenshot windows API

  Hi, I am trying to make a program to work on top of an existing GUI to annotate it and provide extra calculations and statistical information. I want to do this using image recognition, as I have learned a fair amount about this in University using Matlab and similar things. I can get a handle to the window I want to perform image recognition on, but I don't know how to turn that handle into an image of that window, and all its visible child windows. I suppose I am looking for something like the screenshot function, but restricted to a single window. How would I go about doing this? I suppose I'd need something like a .bmp to mess about with. Also, it would have to be efficient enough that I could call it several times a second without my PC grinding to a halt. Hopefully this isn't an obvious question, I typed some things into google but didn't get anything related.

  my team is looking into using hudson as our continuous integration software, 1 problem that we try to figure out is to integrate the reports of junit/pmd/findbugs etc into the build email that get sent to the team. the graph/reports on the dashboard are nice and all, but people usually want to just read the email and not clicking the links. i tried to use the ext-email plugin, but that doesn't provide much help related to this. is there any way i can get those info into the build email? E.g If I have a Contact Table which has 50 Columns and in few of the related entities I might be interested in FirstName and LastName property is it a good idea to create a lightweight version of Contact table.   Install Shield Premier 2009: Basic MSI Project I have a dll that is supposed to be removed during uninstall. But this dll is being used by explorer.exe, it is used for generating windows explorer context menus with their icons(same as the menu items, icons we see when we right click on any file/folder and see the WinRAR items, icons). Manually, I have to unregister the dll and close explorer.exe from task manager and again run explorer.exe. Then I can delete the dll. So from Install Shield how to delete this dll without any problem(as we see while uninstalling WinRAR or other software there is no problem no message boxes shown and the related context menu icons also removed).
