• Google App Engine - low-level datastore API flag?

  In my GAE-Java app, I'm using the low-level datastore API. Hence I don't need the GAE app instance to load any of the higher level data access libraries such as JPA, JDO, Data Nucleus, etc. Is there a flag that I can set to indicate that I don't want these libraries to be loaded? My motivation to do this is to reduce app instance startup time everywhere I can. Now I don't know if these libraries are loaded only on-demand or always. The dev environment logs messages related to data nucleus which seems to indicate that some of these libraries may be pre-loaded? I hope I'm wrong here. Thanks, Keyur

• Download attachment issue with IE6-8 - non ssl

  I'm facing an issue with file download with IE6-8 in non ssl environment. I've seen a lot of articles about the IE attachment download issue with ssl. As per the articles I tried to set the values of Pragma, Cache-Control headers, but still no luck with it. These are my response headers Cache-Control: private, max-age=5 Date: Tue, 25 May 2010 11:06:02 GMT Pragma: private Content-Length: 40492 Content-Type: application/pdf Content-Disposition: Attachment;Filename="file name.pdf" Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 I've set the header values after going through some of these sites KB 812935 KB 316431 But these items are related to SSL. I've checked the response body and headers using fiddler, the response body is proper. I'm using window.open(url, "_blank") to download the file, if I change it to window.open(url, "_parent") or change the "Content-Disposition" to 'inline;Filename="file name.pdf"' it works fine. Please help me to solve this problem

• iPad crashes that aren't happening on iPhone or iPod Touch

  Has anyone had difficulty getting what has otherwise been a solid iPhone app working on the iPad? I was under the impression that iPhone apps would run without problems on the iPad. We are are experiencing crashes (not intermittent - same place, at same time) that we've never gotten on the iPhone or iPod Touch. • Beginning GWT and Java - wich is the best route when coming from LAMP background?

  Hi! I've worked a lot with php/mysql on linux servers, including frameworks, orm etc. Now I want to give GWT and Java a try! Installing GWT SDK, Eclipse plugin etc and running a "Hello world" is no problem... The server is running automagically in the background... But when it comes to setting it up my self, there seems to be confusingly many options. Jetty? Tomcat? Glassfish? How are those related/combinable to/with Apache? Are there any good resources or tutorials for setting up java development and server environments suited for one like me with PHP background? Maybe pointing out the possiblities of running PHP and Java on the same server? Regards / Jonas

• What does Visual Studio 2008 do when I add an assembly reference?

  When I add a reference to an assembly (living in the GAC) to web.config in an ASP.NET project, what does Visual Studio do? [This is related to an earlier question pertaining to BusinessObjects: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2379615/ ] When I add "CrystalDecisions.Enterprise" and "CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework" to the assemblies element in web.config, VS thinks long and hard about it, locking me out for a couple of minutes while it scrutinizes the newcomers. What is it doing during this time? I Googled this but came up empty. I can make some educated guesses (IntelliSense integration, perhaps?) but would ideally like to find some documentation describing exactly what's going on. Ultimately I'm hoping to learn why these BO references are making VS take several minutes to open my projects (I struck out on the SAP forums).

• Limit Connections with semaphores

  I'm trying to limit the number of connections my server will accept using semaphores, but when running, my code doesn't seem to make this restriction - am I using the semaphore correctly? eg. • In symfony/doctrine's schema.yml, where should I put onDelete: CASCADE for a many-to-many relationsh

  I have a many-to-many relationship defined in my Symfony (using doctrine) project between Orders and Upgrades (an Order can be associated with zero or more Upgrades, and an Upgrade can apply to zero or more Orders). # schema.yml Order: columns: order_id: {...} relations: Upgrades: class: Upgrade local: order_id foreign: upgrade_id refClass: OrderUpgrade Upgrade: columns: upgrade_id: {...} relations: Orders: class: Order local: upgrade_id foreign: order_id refClass: OrderUpgrade OrderUpgrade: columns: order_id: {...} upgrade_id: {...} I want to set up delete cascade behavior so that if I delete an Order or an Upgrade, all of the related OrderUpgrades are deleted. Where do I put onDelete: CASCADE? Usually I would put it at the end of the relations section, but that would seem to imply in this case that deleting Orders would cascade to delete Upgrades. Is Symfony + Doctrine smart enough to know what I'm wanting if I put onDelete: CASCADE in the above relations sections of schema.yml?

• Deployment of broadband network

  Hi all, My query is related to broadband network deployment. I have a DSL modem connection provided by my operator. Now the DSL modem has a built-in NAT and DHCP server, hence it allocates IP addresses to any client devices (laptops, PC, mobile) that connect to it. However, the DSL modem also gets a public IP address X that is provisioned by the operator. My question is Whether this IP address X provisioned by operator is an IP address that is directly on the public Internet? Is it likely (practical scenario) that my broadband operator will put in one more NAT+DHCP server and provide IP addresses to all the modems within his broadband network. In this case, the IP addresses allotted to the modem devices will not be directly on the public Internet. Thanks in advance.

• Requirements of an issue/bug tracker

  I've been looking at various issue/bug trackers available on the net. There are some very good ones, but I'm unable to use them as my server does not support Perl/Ruby (for example), I'm not too bothered however because I am able to write code in PHP and as such would prefer something in that language. So I've taken it upon myself to write a custom issue tracker system. As of now it's in early planning stages, and before I continue, I'd like to find out what people need from such an application. My current list of things to add include: Creating/Editing/Deleting issues - both on user and admin level Related issues (similar to that of STO) Admins will be able to create builds/milestones and version control of projects Admins will be able to assign users/groups to a project Roadmap of projects Possible SVN integration with Git? What do you think? There are a couple more things I'd like to add, but I'm sure you'll think of a better way of adding such feature. What would you like to see from an issue tracker?

• UITableView via NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate, select first record by default?

  I have a UITableView that gets populated from CoreData via a controller that implements NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate. How can I have it automatically select the first row (and fire the tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath message)? The tableview is used for a variety of predicate queries, so I'm suspicious of solutions that work on the UIViewController lifecycle (viewDidLoad, etc), but I'm new to the platform, so I'm open. I've tried a variety of things, but I'm not sure where in the call stack to put it. I've tried calling cell.selected = true inside tableView:cellForRowAtIndex: method, but that just ends up turning the cell black (and doesn't fire the selected callback method) A tagent question, with all the delegating and core data protocols, does it imply asynchronous data fetch (multiple threads)? Or is the NSFetchedResultsController calling all its related methods in the same thread? Maybe I'm just scared that if it is async, there would be race conditions that would be tough to troubleshoot later.

  Hello. I have a Python script that reads a file (typically from optical media) marking the unreadable sectors, to allow a re-attempt to read said unreadable sectors on a different optical reader. I discovered that my script does not work with block devices (e.g. /dev/sr0), in order to create a copy of the contained ISO9660/UDF filesystem, because os.stat().st_size is zero. The algorithm currently needs to know the filesize in advance; I can change that, but the issue (of knowing the block device size) remains, and it's not answered here, so I open this question. (about non-special files) Therefore, I'm asking: in Python, how can I get the file size of a block device file?

• Grails deploy on Tomcat6

  Hello, while trying to deploy a Grails application into tomcat6 I ran into some problems: I used the grails war command to build up a war, then copied it to var/lib/tomcat6/webapps and tried to restart the container. I had to change default Tomcat policy to skip security exceptions, since I couldn't access environment variable (like grails.env), then tried again but it gives me an exception related to instantiating something, but it's not clear where should I try to fix the error, according to tomcat6 logs the problem is: SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.context.GrailsC$ org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'pluginManager' defined in ServletContext$ at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.exceptions.NewInstanceCreationException: Could not create a new instance of class [Hiberna$ ... 1 more Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org.hibernate.cfg.Environment It seems like it's unable to load org.hibernate.cfg.Environment class. I checked the applicationContext.xml and it refers to grails.xml to search for plugins, in this last file I actually have HibernateGrailsPlugin. Where should I look to find if the plugin is present?

This may seem as an open-ended question but I'll surely accept the most impressive and upvoted answer ;) Basically, I could describe my own case - I just fail 5 times a day with my intuition cause very frequently I can be just not up-to-the-speed with my requirements/manager/team/etc. and I just have to make code quickly - that's why proper formalization in many cases stands aside. I want to gather some experience of yours - what was the most epic failure when you did rely on you implicit reasoning/intuitive knowledge/immediate perception etc. of course everything you describe should be related to programming/computers. It's mostly just to measure the danger of using that 'it's obvious..' words. I've made it com. wiki to be properly transformed after gathering enough views count. Thank you!

  I have a configuration file with a lot of data like sensor locations, type, rules for activating devices etc. Basically related to a pervasive system. I plan to design an ontology for this domain. The doubt in my mind is how should I populate the ontology with the information in the configuration file, as the configuration files are going to change every now and then. Earlier I was planning to use XML, so I can just read the configuration file at runtime and create an XML as per the XSD. Do we use the same technique for Ontologies?   Related question I am having similar problems to what that guy had in his. My upload server returns aredirect Specifically, I am not sure what FormPanel.SubmitCompleteEvent.getResults() returns. Sometimes, I get html of an img: <img style="cursor: -moz-zoom-in;" alt="http://<myapp>.appspot.com/servePic?blob-key=abcdef" src="http://<myapp>.appspot.com/servePic?blob-abcdef" height="1" width="1"> Sometimes I get the image data in bytes. Behavior varies on I dunno what. I get the first in development, and the second in production. Does anyone know anything about this?

  Mathematica has a built-in function ArgMax for functions over infinite domains, based on the standard mathematical definition. The analog for finite domains is a handy utility function. Given a function and a list (call it the domain of the function), return the element(s) of the list that maximize the function. • Yield only as many are required from a generator

  I wish to yield from a generator only as many items are required. In the following code a, b, c = itertools.count() I receive this exception: ValueError: too many values to unpack I've seen several related questions, however I have zero interest in the remaining items from the generator, I only wish to receive as many as I ask for, without providing that quantity in advance. It seems to me that Python determines the number of items you want, but then proceeds to try to read and store more than that number. How can I yield only as many items as I require, without passing in how many items I want?

• OpenGL ES 1.1 vs 2.0 for 2D Graphics, with rotated sprites?

  I am having trouble finding information related to which i should choose, OpenGL ES 1.1 or 2.0 for 2D graphics. OpenGL ES 1.1 on Android is a bit limited to my knowledge, and based purely on sprite count the only useful renderer is draw_texture() (as far as i know). However, that does not have rotation and rotation is very important to me. Now with the NDK adding support for OpenGL ES 2.0, i am trying to figure out if there is anything that preforms as well as draw_texture(), but can handle rotation. Anyone have any information on if 2.0 can help me in this area?

• Which C# 4.0 Book would you purchase, and why?

  I'm currently looking at purchasing a few C# 4.0 books, namely: Essential C# 4.0 by Mark Michaelis or C# 4.0 Unleashed by Bart De Smet. I am aware that both books are yet to be released, but would you consider purchasing either of these books, or would you recommend another? Thanks for your time. Clarification: I'm not a .net Ninja, but I do have 8+ years experience with the framework & related languages. So I'm generally looking for in-depth books. I also train/instruct the rest of my organisation generally 6 - 12 months after each .net release. Each of the developers I train has the same or more .net experience then myself. • .NET AxWebBrowser can't open page "Navigation to the webpage was canceled" error

  Oh, I am stuck again on this quiet annoying problem. I am trying to do a little automated browsing using the axWebBrowser component and it worked before. Now all of a sudden I get the following message when I try to browse to a page. Navigation to the webpage was canceled What you can try: Refresh the page. I totally disabled my firewall, ran VS2008 in Administrator mode, I even installed IE8 all to no avail. By the way IE8 doesn't work either. I don't know if the problem is related but all I get when I put a URL into IE8 is this message. Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage I don't so much mind that, I just really need to get my visual studio axWebBrowser working.

• Give me a practical use-case of Multi-set

  I would like to know a few practical use-cases (if they are not related/tied to any programming language it will be better).I can associate Sets, Lists and Maps to practical use cases. For example if you wanted a glossary of a book where terms that you want are listed alphabetically and a location/page number is the value, you would use the collection TreeMap(OrderedMap which is a Map) Somehow, I can't associate MultiSets with any "practical" usecase. Does someone know of any uses? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiset does not tell me enough :) PS: If you guys think this should be community-wiki'ed it is okay. The only reason I did not do it was "There is a clear objective way to answer this question".

Currently I'm only object given to me is the label, and I can only add text to it. Now what I want is to have unique success message. For example: username field will have a success message: 'username okay!' email = 'email seems right' something along those lines, instead of displaying just one generic success message on all the fields.   We are using Horizontal cluster in our PROD with WAS 6.1 as the Application server. We have enabled dynacache service for some of the JSP fragments using SHARED-PUSH in cachespec.xml file. Now we want to do cache invalidation programmatically..ie. whenever something changes in DB related to cache the cache should get invalidated. so can you please let me know what steps are involved in it to achieve this? any configuration settings at server side or any development changes.

• Retail knowledge inference

  So i am doing a research on how can i infer knowledge from reports (not with a specific format), but after pre processing, i should have some kind of formatted data. A fairly basic inference would be: "Retailer has X stock." and "X is sellable." - "Retailer sells X" the knowledge i focus is retail domain oriented, and if possible i should improve its efficiency with each iteration. Is this scifi(some of my friends think it is)? The related stuff i find online are "expert systems" that find anomalies, fuzzy inference systems and some rants about "easy knowledge". Can you help me with some points for me to focus or orient me in some research directions? blueomega
