• Missing z-axis rotation for transforming between two vectors

  I'm trying to rotate a cube so that it's facing up, but am getting hung up on the final implementation details. It now reliably will rotate the x,y axis to the correct side, but the z-axis is never rotating (See photos of before and after rotation). When I'm using the code below I always get '0' for my rotationVector.z. • Best Java Book(s) for an Experienced Developer

  I have been a .NET developer now for about the past 5/6 years give or take. I have never done any professional Java development and the last time I really touched it was probably back in college. I have been toying with the Scala language a little bit but nothing serious. Recently, I've been offered an opportunity to do some pretty cool work, but using Java instead of .NET. I think I can get by alright with my current skill set, meaning I already know how to program well and am familiar with languages such as C# and C++, etc. So, the syntax and all that language stuff are really not a problem. What I need is a really good reference book and a book about how to think in Java. Each language/Framework/Stack tries to address things a certain way and I'm sure Java is no different. What are some great Java books that you simply can't live without? Are there any books that talk about the most important parts of Java that must be understood before all else? As a side note, I will be doing mostly Java web development. Not really 100% on what types of stuff they are using for persistence, framework, server, etc. Thanks again for the consideration.

• Tips for switching jobs and moving into web based programming?

  I graduated in 2006 with a computer science degree and got solid grades (3.5 overall 3.8 in my major) For the past 4.5 years I've been working as a Software Engineer doing primarily rich client development. Most of my experience is with Java, Swing and C++. I've done a lot of network programming and I have acquired some skill working & debugging in distributed environments. I would like to switch jobs and move into a role where I can get exposure to some new technologies and frameworks. I would like to move into a more web development role but I find my lack of web development experience is hurting me. 90% of the jobs I see advertised are looking for one of two skill sets: 1) Stereotypical server side Java web developer. Experience with Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, etc. 2) Stereotypical front end web developer. Experience with Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, GWT, CSS, etc I find most of these companies are looking really specifically for this experience and they are not willing to take on good programmers/ CS fundamental guys who lack experience with this stuff. I would love to get a job doing stuff like this, but have my skills become out of date and unmarketable? Any opinions on ways to sell myself to help get a new position?

• Styles of games that work at low-resolution

  I'm taking a class on compilers, and the goal is to write a compiler for Meggy Jr devices (Arduino). The goal is just to make a simple compilers with loops and variables and stuff. Obviously, that's lame, so the "real goal" is to make an impressive game on the device. The problem is that it only has 64 pixels to work with (technically 72, but the top 8 are single-color and not part of the main display, so they're really only useful for displaying things like money). My problem is thinking of something to do on a device that small. It doesn't really matter if it's original, but it can't be something that's already available. My first idea was "snake", but that comes with the SDK. Same with a side-scrolling shooter. Remaining ideas include a tower defense game (hard to write, hard to control), an RPG (same), tetris (lame).. The problem is that all of the games I like require a high-resolution screen because they have a lot of text. Even a really simple game like nethack would be hard because each creature would be a single color. tl;dr What styles of games require a. No text; and b. Few enough objects that representing them each with a single color is acceptable?

• LWJGL texture bleeding fix won't work

  I tried a lot of things to fix texture bleeding, but nothing works. I don't want to add a transparent border around my textures, because I already got too many and it would take too much time and I can't do it with code because I'm loading textures with slick. My textures are seperate textures and they seem to wrap on the other side (texture bleeding). Here are the textures that are "bleeding": The head, body, arm and leg are seperate textures. • How to fetch only the sprites in the player's range of motion for collision testing? (2D, axis aligned sprites)

  I am working on a 2D sprite game for educational purposes. (In case you want to know, it uses WebGl and Javascript) I've implemented movement using the Euler method (and delta time) to keep things simple. Now I'm trying to tackle collisions. The way I wrote things, my game only has rectangular sprites (axis aligned, never rotated) of various/variable sizes. So I need to figure out what I hit and which side of the target sprite I hit (and I'm probably going to use these intersection tests). The old fashioned method seems to be to use tile based grids, to target only a few tiles at a time, but that sounds silly and impractical for my game. (Splitting the whole level into blocks, having each sprite's bounding box fit multiple blocks I might abide. But if the sprites change size and move around, you have to keep changing which tiles they belong to, every frame, it doesn't sound right.) In Flash you can test collision under one point, but it's not efficient to iterate through all the elements on stage each frame. (hence why people use the tile method). Bottom line is, I'm trying to figure out how to test only the elements within the player's range of motion. (I know how to get the range of motion, I have a good idea of how to write a collisionCheck(playerSprite, targetSprite) function. But how do I know which sprites are currently in the player's vicinity to fetch only them?) Please discuss. Cheers!

• Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• How to decide on a price for the project as a freelancer

  I have seen similar question on this SE site but none comes close to a sure shot answer and many are rather subjective. So i am taking a website as an example to be more objective for you to decide its development price i should quote for the complete work.I would like to have specific figures. In past I have developed many projects for my classmates (Computer science and few .net) when i was in college and there i just arbitrarily quoted the price i will take depending on my mood and customer's ability to pay.. usually ranging from Rs.500 (about $10 USD) to Rs. 1500 (about $30 USD). I have also developed few websites but that was open-source and free. But this time impressed by my work i have got a client that wants to get a website developed similar to this: [ http://www.jeetle.in/ ]. So taking this website as an example tell me how much should i charge for complete work from designing to payment gateway implementation (Excluding the charge the payment gateway provider will take). Few information you might like to consider. I am the only developer on this project if that makes any difference. And i would be using ASP.Net and MSSQL Express for server side processing and jQuery on client. Time period for development offered is about 4 to 6 Weeks. • Why is sudo bash different from regular bash

  Problem description : I am using something called play framework in my development which requires me to make the python script play available in the path. Hence I create a symbolic link in /usr/local/bin ... Now I have written a shell script (call it status.sh) which calls this python script as follows : play status <some values here related to my app> &> /tmp/xyz.txt and this shell script then sends me the file via email. This works perfectly when I execute the script as follows ./script.sh. However when the script is executed as a cron expression everyday I get an output from stderr saying 'play: command not found'. Hence I did some digging on my own and here are my findings : echo $PATH when I am on the shell shows that I have /usr/local/bin available to me hence I can successfully execute the command play status however when I type in sudo bash and then echo $PATH I do not have the path /usr/local/bin anymore. It is a limited set of folders (one of them being /usr/bin). Q : Why this behavior ?! I fail to understand why the path is different. Also as a workaround would you suggest I do : new symbolic link from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin (what are the side effects of this?) remove /usr/local/bin sym link altogether and only use /usr/bin is there a convention that I am not following here for linking new programs and executing them from $PATH ? • What is a currently a good game stack for simple Javascript 2D multiplatform game?

  I'm looking for advice from someone can help me avoid common pitfalls in developing light weight, quick-to-market games. Yeah, I've heard of Google ;-), but a trip down Google lane does not beat solid experience from someone who has been down this path. I'm looking for advice from someone who works alone, or in a small team, and has developed some 2D games for mobile. My game ideas don't require intensive graphics, just simple arcade style glyphs and collision detection. My experience is mostly with Scala, Java and web technologies (Javascript, CSS, SVG, HTML, etc). My question is: Is there a nice stack that someone can suggest that will be a good fit for my skillset? I'm considering Javascript for simple 2D shooter games with simple multiplayer games being supported with a Scala server-side written on Spray. Is this silly? Should I rather look into things such as Unity 3D, and use it in 2D mode? For the actual game engine, something like the Sparrow Framework would be great, but it needs to be multiplatform.

  Here's a bit of fun with WebLogic JDBC configurations.  I ran into this issue after reading that p13nDataSource and cgDataSource-NonXA should not be configured as multi-source. There were some issues changing them to use the basic JDBC connection string and when rolling back to the bad configuration the server went "Boom".  Since one purpose behind this blog is to share lessons learned, I just had to post this. If you write your descriptors manually (as opposed to generating them using the WLS console) and put a comma-separated list of JNDI addresses like this: <jdbc-data-source-params> <jndi-name>weblogic.jdbc.jts.commercePool,contentDataSource, contentVersioningDataSource,portalFrameworkPool</jndi-name> <algorithm-type>Load-Balancing</algorithm-type> <data-source-list>portalDataSource-rac0,portalDataSource-rac1</data-source-list> <failover-request-if-busy>false</failover-request-if-busy> </jdbc-data-source-params> so long as the first address resolves, it will still work. Sort of.  If you call this connection to do an update, only one node of the RAC instance is updated. Other wonderful side-effects include the server refusing to start sometimes. • Design pattern for client/server sessions?

  Are there any common patterns or general guidance I can learn from for how to design a client/server system where the both the client and server must maintain some kind per-client session state? I've found any number of libraries that can help with some of the plumbing, but it's the overall design I'm wondering about. Open issues in my mind: How to structure the client/server communication so that bidirectional synchronous and asynchronous requests are possible? The server side needs to spawn a couple of per-connected-client session-long helper process. How to manage that? How to manage the mapping from a given client (and any of it's requests) to server state and helper process instances in the face of multiple clients and intermittent network connectivity. Most communication can be simple blocking request/reply, but some will be long running processing tasks that the client will want to keep tabs on. To the extent that it matters, the platform is Linux/C/C++. Not web based. Just an existing thick-client software app being modified to talk to backend servers for some tasks.

• Network Issues only on one network with a Broadcom BCM4312

  My Ubuntu 11.10 laptop is having network connection issues...only on one network. I have a BCM4312 card and I'm using the proprietary driver. Whenever I connect to a network over wireless connection, I have no trouble except for one network. In my dorm, if I try to connect to the wireless network, it stays connected from anywhere to 30 seconds to 30 minutes before it will still be "connected" according to the indicator but there is no incoming/outgoing internet connection. This only happens in this building. Other networks with the same name at other buildings on my campus have no issue whatsoever. I took it to the tech department here and they keep claiming it's my laptop; but, if I can connect to other networks with absolutely no issues, why can't my laptop connect here? So, here's my question: Is it my laptop, or is it the network? As a side note, no one else that I know has issues on this network but one; she's running Windows 7 and I forget what kind of laptop it is. One of the people in my hall runs Ubuntu 12.04 and has no problem with the wireless. What do you all think of this?

• Collision Resolution

  Hey all, I'm making a simple side-scrolling game, and I would appreciate some input! My collision detection system is a simple bounding box detection, so it's really easy to implement. However my collision resolution is ridiculous! Currently I have a little formula like this: if (colliding(firstObject,secondObject)) firstObject.resolve_collision(yAxisOffset); if (colliding(firstObject,secondObject)) firstObject.resolve_collision(xAxisOffset); where yAxisOffset is only set if the first object's previous y position was outside the second object's collision frame, respectively xAxisOffset as well. Now this is working great, in general. However there is a single problem. When I have a stack of objects and I push the first object against that stack, the first object get's "stuck," on the stack. What's I think is happening is the object's collision system checks and resolves for collisions based on creation time, so If I check one axis, then the other, the object will "sink" object directly along the checking axis. This sinking action causes the collision detection routine to think there's a gap between our position and the other object's position, and when I finally check the object that I've already sunk into, my object's position is resolved to it's original position... All this is great, and I'm sure if I bang my head against a wall long enough i'll come up with a working algorithm, but I'd rather not =). So what in the heck do you think I should do? How could I change my collision resolution system to fix this? • How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8

  We previously explained why so many geeks hate Internet Explorer, and even though Internet Explorer 9 and 10 are greatly improved, and on par with the competition, we’re still going to explain how to uninstall it from Windows 8 if you should want to do so. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 10 Press the Win + R keyboard combination and type appwiz.cpl into the run box, then hit enter. When the Programs and Features window opens, you are going to want to click on the “Turn Windows features on or off” hyperlink on the left hand side. Next, find Internet Explore and uncheck it. You will then be given a warning, you can just click yes to continue. Now click on the OK button, and then reboot your machine. Once you machine has restarted, you will see that Internet Explorer is no longer in the taskbar You should also notice that the Metro version of Internet Explorer has also been removed. • An unexpected pleasure from Windows 8

  This post is certainly on the more nuanced side of all the goodness that is Windows 8, but it’s about something that’s really changed my PC usage experience for the better. Besides being a geek and the enjoying all the techno-thrills and chills that go along with sitting in front of a keyboard all day, I really love the forest.  Trees have always been special to me.  The feeling of being in the forest with all the sounds and ambiance, the broken light, the fragrance of the air… it’s paradise to me. As I can’t get there often, due to work, and quite often the heat here in Texas, I’ve found something that can at least partially fill the gap…  When you install Windows 8, you’ll have an app called “Naturespace” from http://www.naturespace.com/ .  It boasts a number of predefined loops in what they call “holographic audio.”  They’re essentially high-tech 3D sound fields recorded in natural environments. After checking them out, I really liked the sound of the “Daybreak” selection: A great benefit is that you don’t have to be in Metro/Modern/Windows App Store mode, in order to keep the sound playing.  To start the day, I click on Daybreak, start it, then go back to the desktop and fire up VS, Chrome, etc. As I work and play, I’m surrounded by this delightful background ambiance which relaxes me and puts my mind at ease. Give it a try.  I think you’ll like it.  And no, you don’t need ear buds or headphones to get the benefit.

• MEF, IServiceProvider and Testing Visual Studio Extensions

  In the latest and greatest version of Visual Studio, MEF plays a critical role, one that makes extending VS much more fun than it ever was. So typically, you just [Export] something, and then someone [Import]s it and that's it. MEF in all its glory kicks in and gets all your dependencies satisfied. Cool, you say, so let's now import ITextTemplating and have some T4-based codegen going! Ah, if only it was that easy. Turns out by default, none of the VS built-in services are exposed to MEF, apparently because there wasn't enough time to analyze the lifetime, initialization, dependencies, etc. for each one before launch, which makes perfect sense. You don't want to blindly export everything now just in case. There's also the whole VS package initialization thing which in this version of VS is not so transparently integrated with the MEF publishing side (i.e. a MEF export from a package can get instantiated before its owning package, and in fact, the package can remain unloaded forever and the export will continue to be visible to anyone)....Read full article

• Virtualbox shared folder mount from fstab fails; works once bootup is complete

  I've got Ubuntu 13.10 installed in Virtualbox 4.3. The host machine is Windows. I have a couple of Virtualbox shared folders being mounted by /etc/fstab. Until recently this setup worked just fine, but after upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 and Virtualbox 4.2 (at essentially the same time) the fstab mounting stopped working. I get the following error during boot: An error occurred while mounting /home/benme/Documents. keys:Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery Pressing M for manual recovery and then trying to mount manually also fails: root@benme-vb:~# cd /home/benme root@benme-vb:/home/benme# mount Documents /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device But if I instead skip mounting during boot, wait for Unity to start and then mount manually in a shell, everything works fine: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents benme-vb ~ % sudo mount Documents [sudo] password for benme: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents # actual file list omitted Note that when I mount manually I'm letting mount take all the options from /etc/fstab, and it works. This suggests to me that it's some sort of timing issue, where Virtualbox isn't "ready" to provide the shared file mounts at the point /etc/fstab mounts are run during bootup. Here's the fstab line, just for completeness: Documents /home/benme/Documents vboxsf uid=benme,gid=benme,dmode=774,fmode=664 0 0 Is there something I can do about this from the Ubuntu side? Or does anyone happen to know more about this from the Virtualbox angle? I've found an old report on the Virtualbox bug-tracker with identical symptoms, but in that case the user had updated Virtualbox without updating their guest additions and resolving that fixed the problem; this isn't happening here, I've definitely got the 4.3 guest additions installed.

• Alt+Tab doesn't work when Citrix is in full screen

  I am using 12.04 and in my work we connect to a Citrix XenDesktop. I've installed Citrix Receiver, using this link and it all works perfectly. But, I have a problem. Alt+Tab doesn't work in full screen mode. There are several adjustments you can choose when login in, with the Settings "button" up in the right corner. (Sorry, I couldn't post an image because I'm new.) I like to work with 95% full screen, with the windows key combination in "full screen mode only". This allows me to use the windows combinations when a work in full screen, inside the remote computer (inside Citrix). I can Alt+Tab past the "Citrix computer" when I put it down to 95%. It also allows me to use the "Ubuntu menu" on the left side. But I really can't make this work in Ubuntu. I've tried to put the windows key combination to "remote server only" and yes, it works inside the server, but also only there and the Ubuntu menu stops working. (in example print Screen. I am using this for documentation.) When I try to Tab from one place to another, even when Citrix isn't in full mode, if I stop there and the continue "tabbing" it continues inside Citrix. I want to use windows key combination, but only in full screen mode. Does anyone have a solution to fix in another way?

I suspect he drives a Volvo C30 as it comes up in many of the code examples! Throughout the book there are numerous links back and forth so as to avoid over complicating the current topic. I have have no hesitation in recommending this book both to programmers starting out with C# and to the seasoned professional. It is a book that should be on every C# development team's book shelf.

• How to disable the Social Reader Application in Facebook?

  Social Reader Application has made the process of sharing in Facebook easy but it looks like whatever we read is being displayed in our Facebook’s page. How to avoid this sharing? In the recent days, everyone’s Facebook Page is being flooded with various news from all the Social Reader Applications we have enabled. Even though this is a good idea to share the current news to everyone, it still seems to have taken away our privacy of what content we actually read. To avoid displaying the news on our Facebook page: 1. If you want the feeds to be displayed in your page but not to be shown to public or friends, just select from the options that are listed when you give permission for the Social Reader when you first read a feed. 2. Select Account Settings from the drop down menu on the top right corner of your FB page. Select Apps Tab which is available in the left side of the page. Here you can change the App Settings or completely delete the App. 3. You can also block Social Reader and other applications’ feeds that are read by your friends. In the right corner of the feed, click the drop-down icon and select “Hide all by ‘Application’” option. By selecting this, you would not be able to see any feeds from your friends too. 4. If you are intrigued by the feeds, you can just copy the title in your search engine and then read directly from their sites. This will not list the feed in your Facebook page.

• What does your Lisp workflow look like?

  I'm learning Lisp at the moment, coming from a language progression that is Locomotive BASIC - Z80 Assembler - Pascal - C - Perl - C# - Ruby. My approach is to simultaneously: write a simple web-scraper using SBCL, QuickLisp, closure-html, and drakma watch the SICP lectures I think this is working well; I'm developing good 'Lisp goggles', in that I can now read Lisp reasonably easily. I'm also getting a feel for how the Lisp ecosystem works, e.g. Quicklisp for dependencies. What I'm really missing, though, is a sense of how a seasoned Lisper actually works. When I'm coding for .NET, I have Visual Studio set up with ReSharper and VisualSVN. I write tests, I implement, I refactor, I commit. Then when I'm done enough of that to complete a story, I write some AUATs. Then I kick off a Release build on TeamCity to push the new functionality out to the customer for testing & hopefully approval. If it's an app that needs an installer, I use either WiX or InnoSetup, obviously building the installer through the CI system. So, my question is: as an experienced Lisper, what does your workflow look like? Do you work mostly in the REPL, or in the editor? How do you do unit tests? Continuous integration? Packaging & deployment? When you sit down at your desk, steaming mug of coffee to one side and a framed photo of John McCarthy to the other, what is it that you do? Currently, I feel like I am getting to grips with Lisp coding, but not Lisp development ...

• Getting .deb package dependencies for an offline Ubuntu computer through Windows

  Basically I want to "batch" download a .deb file and all its dependencies at once on a Windows 7 machine (of which I do not have admin access, it is a public computer.) I've seen plenty of Ubuntu based fixes that require terminal and apt, I'm asking how to do this on Windows. (I am not sure if this question fits here but I haven't found anywhere else that it could go.) I've tried Keryx and Sushi-huh to try to get packages and their dependencies but these both require Python, Python can't be normally installed without admin permission. (Side note, I think I've seen programs bundle python so they can work without installing it to c:, is this possible as a workaround? Google isn't helping) If anyone wants to know I'm trying to download Krita and Blender for Ubuntu 12.10/AMD64 I have been able to manually download single .deb files and dependencies upwards to 38 dependent packages, but then those 38 packages depend on other packages, It's maddening to not have some way to automatically do this on Windows. *Edit Sorry I forgot to make it clear that my personal home computer is running Ubuntu 12.10 and the public computer I'm using to download is Windows 7
