  • Whats the best solution for a database used in conjunction with Maps in Android?

    - by Andrew
Could someone please point me in the right direction. My project involves a database where users enter their address and other info from my website. This database is then referenced in my android application to show the locations of these addresses in my database. I have yet to start and just came up with this idea. My question is, what would be the best method to create a database easily modified through my website (mySQL, php, etc), and also easily referenced easily through Android and the Google Maps API? I need some ideas on the languages I will need to use to create this database and website so I can go buy the necessary books to start reading up. Thanks so much

  • What would you suggest as a high school first language?

    - by ldigas
Edit by OA: After reading some answers I'll just update the question a little. At first I put it a little bluntly, but some of those gave me some good arguments which have to be taken into consideration while making a stand on this one. (these are mostly picked up from comments and answers below). A few things to take into account: to many pupils this is a first programming language - at this stage most of them have trouble grasping a difference between data types, variable passing, ... and whatnot, less alone pointers and similar 'low level stuff' :) they will all have to pass this to get into next grade (well, big majority of them anyway) not all of them have computers at home, not all of them are willing to learn this, less alone interested in - so the concepts have to be taught on a finite time scale in school hours (as well as practice on computers) free literature is a bonus - the teacher will make some scripts and handaways, but still ... I wouldn't like to bear the parents with the burden of buying expensive literature (also, english is not a native language here ... and although they are all learning it, their ability to read it fluently is somewhat questionable) somebody gave an argument - "a language which does not get in the way of ideas" - good one accessibility on different platforms in not expecially important at this point - although most of the suggested ones are available on win as well as linux - not many macs in this part of europe (their prices are sky high for anything but specialised usage) I will check what are the licencing issues on ms express editions about using it massively in high schools for purposes like this - if someone has any info about this, please, do not be shy with it :) A friend of mine, informatics teacher - in EU it comes as something as junior cs teacher, in a local high school asked me what I thought about what should be the first language pupils should be taught? It is a technical school (a little more oriented towards mathematics than the gymnasium, but not computer oriented totally). So I'm asking you - what do you think should be the first language pupils are exposed to in highschool? They have been teaching Pascal so far, but she's not sure that's a good course. She thought about switching to C (which I resented; considering not all pupils have interests in programming, to start with, and should be taught something higher level since they are just gripping the idea of a loop and such ... for a start), I suggested python or ruby (preferably py since it handles all paradigms). What is your opinion on this one? I looked, but didn't find a similar question on SO, so if there is one, please just point me towards it. Edit: The assumption is that none of the pupils have been exposed to any programming in junior school. See also: What is the best way to teach young kids some basic programming concepts? • jQuery validation plugin doens't work for me

    - by Idsa
I have the following code to enable validation work: $(document).ready(function() { $("#eventForm").validate({ rules: { startDate: "required", startTime: "required", endDate: { required: function (element) { var endTimeValue = $('#endTime').val(); return (endTimeValue != null && endTimeValue != ''); } }, endTime: { required: function (element) { var endDateValue = $('#endDate').val(); return (endDateValue != null && endDateValue != ''); } } }, messages: { startDate: "Please enter event local start date", startTime: "Please enter event local start time" }, errorPlacement: function (error, element) { error.appendTo(element.parent().next()); }, submitHandler: function (form) { var options = { dataType: 'json', success: eventCreationSuccess, error: eventCreationError }; alert('submit'); //$(form).ajaxSubmit(options); } }); }); But validation plugin doesn't catch submit - default submit is executed. jQuery and validation plugin scripts are imported.

  • Starting Frame-By-Frame Animation

    - by OceanBlue
Hi, I have a basic question about starting a frame-by-frame animation. When I call the AnimationDrawable.start() method from my code directly, it doesn't seem to work. public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { ... mAnimation.start(); ... } But if I put this line inside the onClick() callback method of a button, pressing the buton starts the animation. Why doesn't this line work in the code? Thanks!

  • python regex for repeating string

    - by Lars Nordin
I am wanting to verify and then parse this string (in quotes): string = "start: c12354, c3456, 34526;" //Note that some codes begin with 'c' I would like to verify that the string starts with 'start:' and ends with ';' Afterward, I would like to have a regex parse out the strings. I tried the following python re code: regx = r"V1 OIDs: (c?[0-9]+,?)+;" reg = re.compile(regx) matched = reg.search(string) print ' matched.groups()', matched.groups() I have tried different variations but I can either get the first or the last code but not a list of all three. Or should I abandon using a regex?

  • Is there a way to animate on a Home Widget?

    - by David
Hi All, I want to use an animation on a Home page Widget, i.e. an AppWidgetProvider. I was hoping to use the "Frame Animation" technique: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/graphics/2d-graphics.html#frame-animation which I've used successfully in an activity. But I can't translate that code to an AppWidgetProvider. Basically, in an AppWidgetProvider, I create and work with a RemoteViews object, which AFAIK doesn't provide me with a method to get a reference to an ImageView in the layout for me to call start() on the animation. There is also not a handler or a callback for when the widget displays so I can make the start() call. Is there another way this can be done? I suppose that I can probably do the animation on my own with very fast onUpdate() calls on the widget, but that seems awfully expensive.

  • How should i build my GUI in Qt ?

    - by Apollo
I am wondering which way is the best to start building a GUI+SOFT in Qt. I am trying to build a sound media player based on a MVC pattern. Until now i have found 3 ways to do so. 1- Should I use a .ui file thanks to Qt designer, is it flexible enough ? 2- Should I use QML to make the design than integrate it to a C++ development ? 3- Should I just start from scratch and do it by hand without Qt Designer and using Qt library ? Thank you very much for your answers.

  • How can I add line breaks into my event title in json

    - by Ami Mahloof
one thing i can not get straight is the ability to add html without it being escaped or actually creating new lines here's my json: { "id": 30, "title": "Basics \n Awesome Abs & Butt Blast \n Danielle B", "start": "2010-05-11T08:00:00-04:00", "end": "2010-05-11T08:30:00-04:00", "allDay": false } and here's the code for it: [ <% @events.each do |e| % { "id": <%= e.id -%, "title": "<%= e.event_template.level %<%= e.monqi_class.title %<%= e.instructor.last_initial %", "start": "<%= e.start_date.iso8601 %", "end": "<%= e.end_date.iso8601 %", "allDay": false } <%= @events.last == e ? "" : "," % <% end -% ] so I am trying to have inside an even 3 lines, (level, class title, and instructor) the problem is it's getting escaped so the charcters are not being parsed by html can you please help me with that? Thanks a lot Ami

  • Jetty: Stopping programatically causes "1 threads could not be stopped"

    - by Ondra Žižka
Hi, I have an embedded Jetty 6.1.26 instance. I want to shut it down by HTTP GET sent to /shutdown. So I created a JettyShutdownServlet: @Override protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws ServletException, IOException { resp.setStatus(202, "Shutting down."); resp.setContentType("text/plain"); ServletOutputStream os = resp.getOutputStream(); os.println("Shutting down."); os.close(); resp.flushBuffer(); // Stop the server. try { log.info("Shutting down the server..."); server.stop(); } catch (Exception ex) { log.error("Error when stopping Jetty server: "+ex.getMessage(), ex); } However, when I send the request, Jetty does not stop - a thread keeps hanging in org.mortbay.thread.QueuedThreadPool on the line with this.wait(): // We are idle // wait for a dispatched job synchronized (this) { if (_job==null) this.wait(getMaxIdleTimeMs()); job=_job; _job=null; } ... 2011-01-10 20:14:20,375 INFO org.mortbay.log jetty-6.1.26 2011-01-10 20:14:34,756 INFO org.mortbay.log Started [email protected]:17283 2011-01-10 20:25:40,006 INFO org.jboss.qa.mavenhoe.MavenHoeApp Shutting down the server... 2011-01-10 20:25:40,006 INFO org.mortbay.log Graceful shutdown [email protected]:17283 2011-01-10 20:25:40,006 INFO org.mortbay.log Graceful shutdown org.mortbay.jetty.servlet.Context@1672bbb{/,null} 2011-01-10 20:25:40,006 INFO org.mortbay.log Graceful shutdown org.mortbay.jetty.webapp.WebAppContext@18d30fb{/jsp,file:/home/ondra/work/Mavenhoe/trunk/target/classes/org/jboss/qa/mavenhoe/web/jsp} 2011-01-10 20:25:43,007 INFO org.mortbay.log Stopped [email protected]:17283 2011-01-10 20:25:43,009 WARN org.mortbay.log 1 threads could not be stopped 2011-01-10 20:26:43,010 INFO org.mortbay.log Shutdown hook executing 2011-01-10 20:26:43,011 INFO org.mortbay.log Shutdown hook complete It blocks for exactly one minute, then shuts down. I've added the Graceful shutdown, which should allow me to shut the server down from a servlet; However, it does not work as you can see from the log. I've solved it this way: Server server = new Server( PORT ); server.setGracefulShutdown( 3000 ); server.setStopAtShutdown(true); ... server.start(); if( server.getThreadPool() instanceof QueuedThreadPool ){ ((QueuedThreadPool) server.getThreadPool()).setMaxIdleTimeMs( 2000 ); } setMaxIdleTimeMs() needs to be called after the start(), becase the threadPool is created in start(). However, the threads are already created and waiting, so it only applies after all threads are used at least once. I don't know what else to do except some awfulness like interrupting all threads or System.exit(). Any ideas? Is there a good way? Thanks, Ondra

  • Can this loop be sped up in pure Python?

    - by Noctis Skytower
I was trying out an experiment with Python, trying to find out how many times it could add one to an integer in one minute's time. Assuming two computers are the same except for the speed of the CPUs, this should give an estimate of how fast some CPU operations may take for the computer in question. The code below is an example of a test designed to fulfill the requirements given above. This version is about 20% faster than the first attempt and 150% faster than the third attempt. Can anyone make any suggestions as to how to get the most additions in a minute's time span? Higher numbers are desireable. EDIT: This experiment is being written in Python 3.1 and is 15% faster than the fourth speed-up attempt. def start(seconds): import time, _thread def stop(seconds, signal): time.sleep(seconds) signal.pop() total, signal = 0, [None] _thread.start_new_thread(stop, (seconds, signal)) while signal: total += 1 return total if __name__ == '__main__': print('Testing the CPU speed ...') print('Relative speed:', start(60))

  • System_Daemon and shell_exec

    - by Jesse
Hey Everyone, I've set up a daemon (daemon.php) using PEAR's System_Daemon which waits for something to appear in the database. Once something is there, the daemon gets enough information and sends it out to another script (execute.php) using the shell_exec command this way I'm not worried about waiting for a response and holding up the daemon. Both of the scripts work fine alone and I'm even able to call shell_exec before calling System_Daemon::start(); . However, if I trying calling it AFTER System_Daemon::start();, then I get an Access Denied only when outputting to a file. I'm still new to Daemons in general, so any ideas or thoughts would be great! Thanks Guys!

  • How to apply patterns when not all team members can follow them

    - by michael moore
We're going to start a new huge project and while it's in the process of architecting the system, I have certain doubts whether I can apply patterns and be sure they won't be violated by team members. The problem is, not all team members have enough skills to develop asp.net apps let's say using MVP pattern. So maybe this question is addressed to Team leads, or experienced devs. Did you dealt with this kind of situation, and if so what was your solution. I was thinking to create the core by myself, and let 'em start building upon that core, however I'm not sure it will work out.

  • Caching the repository index in m2eclipse

    - by Titi Wangsa bin Damhore
everytime i start with a fresh new workspace, m2eclipse downloads nexus-maven-repository-index.gz from the maven central repository. this is good. but, some times, i just want to start a new workspace, and not wait for it to download, it tried copying the whole .metadata directory from an old workspace to the new one, but the list of maven artifacts are still empty. is there a way i can cache it? or at least download the file once, and the copy/extract/repackage it so that m2eclipse thinks it has already downloaded it and allows me to search for maven artifacts. or a short version of the question where and in what format is the "nexus-maven-repository-index.gz" file stored in the workspace?

  • starting 64 Bit Windows Application Development

    - by user173438
I intend to start writing a 64 Bit Scientific Computing Application (signal processing) for Windows using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. What should I have ready as far as a development platform is concerned? How would it be different from 32 Bit development? What could be the porting issues for a 32 Bit version that I already have (ok - this might too early to ask.. even before I start compiling)? As you might have guessed, I am looking for general directions. All pointers would be much appreciated! :) Thanks in advance..

  • How to get flash player to display under content on a PC?

    - by bschaeffer
Long story short, I'm developing a theme template for a blog that enables you to view the posts in blocks. The main part of the post is displayed at first, then the secondary content is displayed over that when you hover over the post block. Everything works fine on a Mac Versions of all major browsers, but start browsing on a PC, and all hell breaks loose when you start trying to display content over Flash Video embeds. The flash element remains visible over the content. It's completely unusable. From a PC, you can view an example of the problem here: http://photorific.tumblr.com I'm almost certain this is a bug in the Flash Plugin for Windows, but I was wondering if anyone else had come across this problem before, and if there were any solutions. This problem has presented itself for a while now and any help would be really, really, really appreciated!

  • How do I check for the existence of an external file with XSL?

    - by LOlliffe
I've found a lot of examples that reference Java and C for this, but how do I, or can I, check for the existence of an external file with XSL. First, I realize that this is only a snippet, but it's part of a huge stylesheet, so I'm hoping it's enough to show my issue. <!-- Use this template for Received SMSs --> <xsl:template name="ReceivedSMS"> <!-- Set/Declare "SMSname" variable (local, evaluates per instance) --> <xsl:variable name="SMSname"> <xsl:value-of select=" following-sibling::Name"/> </xsl:variable> <fo:table font-family="Arial Unicode MS" font-size="8pt" text-align="start"> <fo:table-column column-width=".75in"/> <fo:table-column column-width="6.75in"/> <fo:table-body> <fo:table-row> <!-- Cell contains "speakers" icon --> <fo:table-cell display-align="after"> <fo:block text-align="start"> <fo:external-graphic src="../images/{$SMSname}.jpg" content-height="0.6in"/> What I'd like to do, is put in an "if" statement, surronding the {$SMSname}.jpg line. That is: <fo:block text-align="start"> <xsl:if test="exists( the external file {$SMSname}.jpg)"> <fo:external-graphic src="../images/{$SMSname}.jpg" content-height="0.6in"/> </xsl:if> <xsl:if test="not(exists( the external file {$SMSname}.jpg))"> <fo:external-graphic src="../images/unknown.jpg" content-height="0.6in"/> </xsl:if> </fo:block> Because of "grouping", etc., I'm using XSLT 2.0. I hope that this is something that can be done. I hope even more that it's something simple. As always, thanks in advance for any help. LO

  • Open an Application .exe window inside another application

    - by jpnavarini
I have an application in WPF running. I would like that, when a button is clicked inside this application, another application opens, with its window maximized. However, I don't want my first application to stop and wait. I want both to be open and running independently. When the button is clicked again, in case the application is minimized, the application is maximized. In case it is not, it is open again. How is it possible using C#? I have tried the following: Process process = Process.GetProcesses().FirstOrDefault(f => f.ProcessName.Contains("Analysis")); ShowWindow((process ?? Process.Start("..\\..\\..\\MS Analysis\\bin\\Debug\\Chemtech.RT.MS.Analysis.exe")).MainWindowHandle.ToInt32(), SW_MAXIMIZE); But the window does not open, even though the process does start.

  • jQuery Tablesorter - disabled headers show progress bar, sortEnd never triggered

    - by McGirl
I'm combining Tablesorter's 'disable headers using options' function and the 'trigger sortStart / sortEnd' function and have run into an issue. The following code works fine for the most part, BUT: when you click on a disabled header, the progress-indicating #overlay div appears and never goes away. <script type="text/javascript" id="js"> $(document).ready(function() { // call the tablesorter plugin, the magic happens in the markup $("#projectTable").tablesorter({ // pass the headers argument and assing a object headers: { // assign the secound column (we start counting zero) 1: { // disable it by setting the property sorter to false sorter: false }, // assign the third column (we start counting zero) 2: { // disable it by setting the property sorter to false sorter: false } } }); //assign the sortStart event $("#projectTable").bind("sortStart",function() { $("#overlay").show(); }).bind("sortEnd",function() { $("#overlay").hide(); }); }); </script> Any ideas on how I could fix this so that nothing at all happens when the disabled headers are clicked? Thanks!

  • Getting started with html5 web sockets

    - by Stanni
Hi, I'm very interested in learning about the new feature in html5 called web sockets. I've looked into it and have come out with a few questions. It seems that before I can start implementing this new technology into a web application of mine I need to have a web server which supports it. Does this involve downloading something and installing it on the said server? Is there more than one available? If so where do I find these? I already have experience with JavaScript and html/css of course, Are there any other languages I will need to learn to start using web sockets? Any additional information that you think I might need to know would be appreciated.
