• What are good options for hosting video that give you privacy and control (not youtube or vimeo)?

  I have used http://www.longtailvideo.com/bits-on-the-run,http://www.influxis.com/, wistia for video hosting. Wistia didn't allow the finer control that we wanted to have. Influxis doesn't have the features that Bits on the Run has but platform usage for BOTR gets expensive. I was thinking of moving the videos to Amazon CDN. What are your thoughts and experiences with video hosting and are there any recommendations? Videos will be privately streamed to 100's of doctors offices.

• Distributing a very simple application

  I have a very simple working console application written in C++ linked with a light static library. It is just for testing purposes. Now that the coding part is done, I would like to know the process of actually distributing the program. I wrote a very basic CMakeLists.txt that create makefiles or VS projects to build the sources. I also have a program that calls the static library in order to make some google tests. To me, the distribution of this application goes like this : to developpers : the src directory with the CMakeLists.txt file (multi-platform distribution) with a README.txt and an INSTALL.txt to users : the executable and a README.txt on my git repo : everything mentionned above plus the sources for testing and the gtest external lib A this point : considering the complexity of my application, am I doing it right ? Is there any reference that would formalize this distribution process so I can get better and go further ? Say I would like to add dynamic libraries that can be updated, external libraries like boost : how should I package this to distribute it in a professionnal way ?

• Auto-provisioning hosting via API

  I've built a sort of 'software as a service' website package for a specific industry. What I am looking to do is create a payment gateway that allows users to subscribe-- and once the subscription is active, it would auto-provision a web hosting plan for them (a shared account on a server, probably in a chroot'd environment so each user would be insulated from others). Ideally it would auto-install a CMS as well. Tons of web hosts provide a simple reseller plan where I could manually create all the users' hosting accounts-- but so far none that I've found allow you to do this via API. Is there a way to do this short of writing custom shell scripts on something like an EC2 platform? I'd prefer to leave all the server maintenance in the hands of dedicated support staff rather than having to manually handle updates, backups, etc. Thanks for any tips.

• Computer won't wake from hibernate

  So I have a pretty dumb problem...I accidentaly pressed Hibernate while trying to Restart...since then my computer wont boot into Ubuntu anymore (through normal mode or single user mode - rescue mode that is)...all I get is: mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= boot arg. BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Obviously I tried to fire up the Live CD and run fsck (or e2fsck) from there (or just try to do a Check of /dev/sdb1 my partition via gparted - which is basically the same thing). But it doesn't allow me...both gparted and fsck say that the device is busy (I can't even mount it in the LiveCD to rescue data)...umount /dev/sdb1 says its not mounted...any ideas?

  Are you aware of any online service or online "platform" allowing users, not previously registered, to upload pairs of picture+comment to a database? It would be a collaborative database of picture+comment pairs. I'm not going wiki or googlegroup, picasa or such because I'd like the user to have the least to do to participate, that is e.g.: take a picture with his phone and email it to an email to an email address. Or go to a web page with an upload form, type in a description, hit OK and that's it. And the goal is also that it be as hassle-less to put up as possible. Yeah I know, it can't programme itself to my requirements :) by I'm suspecting there's a tool or tool combination going a decent way through my needs. Thanks for any info/advice! I need to buy a license from VideoLan (x264licensing.com) to use the library to encode video into h264 format and I need to buy a license from the MpegLAGroup to use the h264 video encoding in general in my commercial product. Am I right in thinking that? How much do these cost? I don't see selling much since my target is very niche (video game screen capturing).

I simply require a little advice; A very large hosted e-commerce platform emailed me a while back and basically asked me to transfer my domain name to them. They made no offer but simply said 'why not change your domain to xx - xx instaead of xxxx' Not they own all the equivalent names in .com, .org all of them apart from my .co.uk I am a registered partner of theirs and my website is a portfolio of all my themes but I also get a lot of enquires through it. I had heard rumors this company is opening an office in the UK! I'm right in thinking I shouldn't just roll over right? I've put some much effort in to SEO and building my reputation... I can't just give it up surly?

• Run a script with user interaction on log out / shutdown?

  I'd like to run a script on shut down, which interrupts the logout process and and pops up a window with zenity. My target is to get autofsck working with lightdm. It seems to work with 12.04 after installing the old *.deb file, if one runs the check script manually. In order to use it, it should run automatically on log out and ask the user if she/he wants to check the disc on shutdown. There is the option session-cleanup-script in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf which seems to work, if a bash file with full path is used (I can't place the command directly there). But if I press shutdown, there is no time for a user choice. Is there any other option to solve this problem?

Basically, I want to have a dedicated (authoritative) server, but it sounds like that is not possible. Which is why I'm wondering about: Using port 80 web calls to php-driven database Using an xbox as a master-server (is that possible?) I like the sound of #1, because I could write my own application to run on the xbox, and I would assume other users could connect to it similar to the p2p architecture. • Need an engine for MMO mockup

  What I don't need is an MMORPG engine, at the moment. What I do need is a flexible easy-to-use engine that I can make a mock-up with. I don't need support for more than 10 players in an instance, so any multiplayer platform is probably fine. I need an engine with which I can create the following core features: Waves of simple AI enemies that have specific objectives (move to point A, destroy target, move to point B). The units present can be between 50-200 in number. An over-the-shoulder view and the ability to control a team of 3 (like Mass Effect or the latest Dragon Age) Functioning inventory system Right now, all I can really think of is Unreal or Source. Any other suggestions? Again, this is a proving mock-up, not an actual MMO. I'm not terribly worried about the visual aspects as we just want to test mechanics. Note: Can write some scripts in Python, Ruby, or Lua, if necessary.

  I asked a question relating to similar to this already, but I think this is a clearer objective of what Im trying to achieve.. or whether its possible at all! Im trying to find a transformation (matrix ideally) which would transform the 8 points of a 3d unit cube to 8 arbitrary points in space. The 8 target points have no known structure. e.g: My gut feeling is that a matrix is unable to provide this xform since the cube faces vertices can be concave.. but are there any other methods of transformation? • Unwittingly activate wrong wireless driver and now cannot activate the correct one

  I just installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my MacBook 3,1 and found no wireless connection. Using KPackageKit I activated Broadcom b43 because it had already been selected for me. When I subsequently tried to activate Broadcom STA, however, I was returned with an error. After reading Jockey log I removed the wrong driver and reinstalled all drivers so that I can activate the correct one. It hasn't work even though KPackageKit now shows that I have installed: bcmwl-kernel-source bcmwl-modaliases broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source According to the log it appears as if there are conflicts but I don't know how to rectify it. I'm completely new to the platform, just started using Kubuntu 2 days ago. I'll appreciate any advice anyone can give. Thanks.

• box2d and constant movement

  i'm developing a game with a top down view, the players body is a circle. To move the character you need to tap on the screen and it moves to the spot. To achieve this i'm saving the coordinate of the touch and call a method every frame which applies linear velocity to the body with a vector of the direction the body should go _body->SetLinearVelocity(b2Vec2((a.x - currPos.x)/SPEED_RATIO,(size.height - a.y - currPos.y)/SPEED_RATIO)); //click position - current position, screen height - click position (since the y axis is flipped, (0,0) is in the bottom left ) - current position = vector of the direction we want to go now the problem with this is that the body slows down until it finally stops when getting closer to the point we want it to go, since the closer we are to that point the lenght of the vector gets smaller. Besides that i've read that it's bad practice to set linear velocity in box2d and i should use apply force instead, but that way the forces would add up and overshoot the target where it's supposed to stop. So what i'm asking is how to move a box2d body to a coordinate in constant speed.
