• Testing performance of queries in mysl

  I am trying to setup a script that would test performance of queries on a development mysql server. Here are more details: I have root access I am the only user accessing the server Mostly interested in InnoDB performance The queries I am optimizing are mostly search queries (SELECT ... LIKE '%xy%') What I want to do is to create reliable testing environment for measuring the speed of a single query, free from dependencies on other variables. Till now I have been using SQL_NO_CACHE, but sometimes the results of such tests also show caching behaviour - taking much longer to execute on the first run and taking less time on subsequent runs. If someone can explain this behaviour in full detail I might stick to using SQL_NO_CACHE; I do believe that it might be due to file system cache and/or caching of indexes used to execute the query, as this post explains. It is not clear to me when Buffer Pool and Key Buffer get invalidated or how they might interfere with testing. So, short of restarting mysql server, how would you recommend to setup an environment that would be reliable in determining if one query performs better then the other?

• Is it possible to accept a button tag to be in some range iphone sdk

  Hi all, In my application I'm doing dynamic resizing of cells and label in it depending upon the text in it. I'm adding button to cells in uitableview. But now I want to recognize these buttons separately as I'm adding some functionality on button_click. I'm giving the buttons that are added to the cells incremental tags[1,2,3...9 and so on]. Now, how can I take these button tags in some range like[suppose 1-9]? Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

• Chord Chart - Skip to key with a click

  I have a chord chart app that basically can transpose a chord chart up and down throughout the keys, but now I would like to expand that app and allow someone to pick a key and automatically go to that key upon a click event using a function in javascript or jquery. Can someone help me figure this out? The logic seems simple enough, but I'm just not sure how to implement it.   Hello, So I want to create a JDBC connection to MySQL server that is installed on my pc, here are the steps, I installed MySQL with the username and password "root", downloaded mysql-connector-java and from theere I coped the JAR "mysql-connector-java-5.1.12-bin" to "C:\Sun\SDK\jdk\jre\lib\ext", I then added it as an external JAR in my project in eclipse, now in my class I have this code: public void initialiseDatabase() { try { // Load the Driver class. • ajax to php to curl and back..

  I am trying to make an ajax call to a php script. The php script calls an rss feed using curl, gets the data, and returns the data to the funciton. I keep getting an error "Warning: Wrong parameter count for curl_error() in" .... Here is my php code:1 $ch = curl_init() or die(curl_error()); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $feed); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); $data1 = curl_exec($ch) or die(curl_error()); echo $data1; and the ajax call: $.ajax({ url: "getSingleFeed.php", type: "POST", data: "feedURL=" + window.feedURL, success: function(feed){ alert(feed); }}); I tested all the variables, they are being passed correctly, I can echo them out. But this line: $data1 = curl_exec($ch) or die(curl_error()); is what is giving me the error. I am doing the same thing with curl on other pages, just without ajax, and it is working fine. Is there anything special I need to do with ajax to do this?

  Hi. I'm working with a database which is created in Oracle and used in a GIS-software through SDE. One of my colleuges is going to make some statistics out of this database and I'm not capable of finding a reasonable SQL-query for getting the data. I have two tables, one with registrations and one with registrationdetails. • How to prevent parallel builds per build configuration across multiple Build Agents

  I have many build configurations in TeamCity, each servicing a large project. In the past if a build is kicked off the Build Agent could be busy for up to 20min! In order to improve throughput I installed a second Build Agent on the same machine such that if a build run is kicked off by say Build Agent 1 and it is busy for 20min and someone from another project makes a change then Build Agent 2 can do the build for the other project without needing to wait on the current build run to finish. All was well until two successive check-ins resulted in both Build Agents running a build for a single build configuration in parallel. Since some resources are shared, IIS directories & databases, I don't want a single build configuration to run on both Build Agents in parallel. How can I ensure a build isn't triggered if a build is currently running for that build configuration on a different build agent? One way seems to involve environmental variables and ensuring a 50/50 split by Build Agent in terms of build configuration compatibility, but that seems a little clunky.

• Boost::thread mutex issue: Try to lock, access violation

  I am currently learning how to multithread with c++, and for that im using boost::thread. I'm using it for a simple gameengine, running three threads. Two of the threads are reading and writing to the same variables, which are stored inside something i call PrimitiveObjects, basicly balls, plates, boxes etc. But i cant really get it to work, i think the problem is that the two threads are trying to access the same memorylocation at the same time, i have tried to avoid this using mutex locks, but for now im having no luck, this works some times, but if i spam it, i end up with this exception: First-chance exception at 0x00cbfef9 in TTTTT.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xdddddded. Unhandled exception at 0x77d315de in TTTTT.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xdddddded. • SQL command to get field of a maximum value, without making two select

  I'm starting to learn SQL and I'm working on this exercise: I have a "books" table which holds the info on every book (including price and genre ID). I need to get the name of the genre which has the highest average price. I suppose that I first need to group the prices by genre and then retrieve the name of the highest.. I know that I can get the results GENRE VS COST with the following: select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books b group by b.genre; My question is, to get the genre with the highest AVG price from that result, do I have to make: select aux.genre from ( select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books b group by b.genre ) aux where aux.cost = (select max(aux.cost) from ( select b.genre, round(avg(b.price),2) as cost from books l group by b.genre ) aux); Is it bad practice or isn't there another way? I get the correct result but I'm not confortable with creating two times the same selection. I'm not using PL SQL so I can't use variables or anything like that.. Any help will be appreciated. • Accessing functions in a swf-file through javascript [chatroulette.com]

  Lately I have been interested in the code behind chatroulette.com. As you probably know it is a peer-to-peer webcam-chat-service written in actionscript, as I understand. What i have been wondering about is weather its possible to extract the ip-address of whomever you are currently communicating with. I have seen services that do that, but they require that you install a program that runs alongside on your computer sniffing UDP-packages. I was wondering if there was a simpler method. What I do know is that the javascript on the page communicates with the application via "ExternalInterface". On this area I am pretty much a novice but according to my limited understanding you cant get information from the flash-application unless you have configured a listener for a call from javascript and then attach a callback to that event. Is this correct or can you access public functions and variables directly through javascript? There is for example a public function like this: public function get outgoingAddress():String{ return (this.__info.outgoingAddress); } Can it be accessed directly through javascript? If it cant be done so easily, is it possible to decompile the .swf-file, change it (add some functions) and recompile it and run it instead? I am hoping someone can satisfy my curiosity here.   I need to split some info from a asterisk delimitted data. Data Format: NAME*ADRESS LINE1*ADDRESS LINE2 Rules: 1. Name should be always present 2. Address Line 1 and 2 might not be 3. There should be always three asterisks. Samples: MR JONES A ORTEGA*ADDRESS 1*ADDRESS2* Name: MR JONES A ORTEGA Address Line1: ADDRESS 1 Address Line2: ADDRESS 2 A PAUL*ADDR1** Name: A PAUL Address Line1: ADDR1 Address Line2: Not Given My algo is: 1. Iterate through the characters in the line 2. Store all chars in a temp variables until first * is found. Reject the data if no char is found before first occurence of asterisk. If some chars found, use it as the name. 3. Same as step 2 for finding address line 1 and 2 except that this won't reject the data if no char is found My algo looks ugly. The code looks uglier. Spliting using //* doesn't work either since name can be replaced with address line 1 if the data was *Address 1*Address2. Any suggestion?

• How can "today's date" be varied for unit testing purposes?

  I use VS2008 targetting .NET 2.0 Framework, and, just in case, no I can't change this :) I have a DateCalculator class. Its method GetNextExpirationDate attempts to determine the next expiration, internally using DateTime.Today as a baseline date. As I was writing unit tests, I realized that I wanted to test GetNextExpirationDate for different 'today' dates. What's the best way to do this? Here are some alternatives I've considered: Expose a property/overloaded method with argument baselineDate and only use it from the unit test. In actual client code, disregard the property/overloaded method in favour of the method that defaults baselineDate to DateTime.Today. I'm reluctant to do this as it makes the public interface of the DateCalculator class awkward. Create a protected field called baselineDate that is internally set to DateTime.Today. When testing, derive a DateCalculatorForTesting from DateCalculator and set baslineDate via the constructor. It keeps the public interface clean, but still isn't great - baselineDate was made protected and a derived class is required, both solely for testing. Use extension methods. I tried this after adding the ExtensionAttribute, then realized it wouldn't work because extension methods can't access private/protected variables. I initially thought this was really quite an elegant solution. :( I'd be interested in hearing what others think.

• Please help us non-C++ developers understand what RAII is

  Another question I thought for sure would have been asked before, but I don't see it in the "Related Questions" list. Could you C++ developers please give us a good description of what RAII is, why it is important, and whether or not it might have any relevance to other languages? I do know a little bit. I believe it stands for "Resource Acquisition is Initialization". However, that name doesn't jive with my (possibly incorrect) understanding of what RAII is: I get the impression that RAII is a way of initializing objects on the stack such that, when those variables go out of scope, the destructors will automatically be called causing the resources to be cleaned up. So why isn't that called "using the stack to trigger cleanup" (UTSTTC:)? How do you get from there to "RAII"? And how can you make something on the stack that will cause the cleanup of something that lives on the heap? Also, are there cases where you can't use RAII? Do you ever find yourself wishing for garbage collection? At least a garbage collector you could use for some objects while letting others be managed? Thanks.

• Basic compile issue with QT4

  I've been trying to get a dead simple listing from a university textbook to compile with the newest QT SDK for Windows I downloaded last night. After struggling through the regular nonsense (no make.bat, need to manually add environment variables and so on) I am finally at the point where I can build. But only one of the two libraries seem to work. The .pro file I use is dead simple: SUBDIRS += utils \ dataobjects TEMPLATE = subdirs In each of these two subfolders I have the source for a library. Running QMAKE generates a makefile and running Make runs through all the preliminaries and then fails on the g++ call: g++ -enable-stdcall-fixup -Wl,-enable-auto-import -Wl,-enable-runtime-pseudo-reloc --out-implib,libdataobjects.a -shared -mthreads -Wl -Wl,--out-implib,c:\Users\Cobus\workspace\lib\libdataobjects.a -o ..\..\lib\dataobjects.dll object_script.dataobjects.Debug -L"c:\Users\Cobus\Portab~1\Qt\2010.02.1\qt\lib" -LC:\Users\Cobus\workspace\lib -lutils -lQtXmld4 -lQtGuid4 -lQtCored4 c:/users/cobus/portab~1/qt/2010.02.1/mingw/bin/../lib/gcc/mingw32/4.4.0/../../../../mingw32/bin/ld.exe: cannot find -lutils The problem seems to be right near the end of the command line, where -lutils is added, indicating that there is a library by the name of utils. While I would have expected to see that, you'll notice the library names after --out include lib in the name, so they become libutils and libdataobjects. I have tried to figure out why this is happening, to no avail. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

• Optimizing processing and management of large Java data arrays

  I'm writing some pretty CPU-intensive, concurrent numerical code that will process large amounts of data stored in Java arrays (e.g. lots of double[100000]s). Some of the algorithms might run millions of times over several days so getting maximum steady-state performance is a high priority. In essence, each algorithm is a Java object that has an method API something like: public double[] runMyAlgorithm(double[] inputData); or alternatively a reference could be passed to the array to store the output data: public runMyAlgorithm(double[] inputData, double[] outputData); Given this requirement, I'm trying to determine the optimal strategy for allocating / managing array space. Frequently the algorithms will need large amounts of temporary storage space. They will also take large arrays as input and create large arrays as output. Among the options I am considering are: Always allocate new arrays as local variables whenever they are needed (e.g. new double[100000]). Probably the simplest approach, but will produce a lot of garbage. Pre-allocate temporary arrays and store them as final fields in the algorithm object - big downside would be that this would mean that only one thread could run the algorithm at any one time. Keep pre-allocated temporary arrays in ThreadLocal storage, so that a thread can use a fixed amount of temporary array space whenever it needs it. ThreadLocal would be required since multiple threads will be running the same algorithm simultaneously. Pass around lots of arrays as parameters (including the temporary arrays for the algorithm to use). Not good since it will make the algorithm API extremely ugly if the caller has to be responsible for providing temporary array space.... Allocate extremely large arrays (e.g. double[10000000]) but also provide the algorithm with offsets into the array so that different threads will use a different area of the array independently. Will obviously require some code to manage the offsets and allocation of the array ranges. Any thoughts on which approach would be best (and why)?

  It might be a bit difficult to explain, so I'll give some example code. Note that I'm using NetBeans IDE (latest). class Dummy { public function say(){ } } /** * Builds dummy class and returns it. * @return Dummy The dummy class. */ function say_something(){ return new Dummy(); } $s=say_something(); While developing in netbeans I can invoke auto-complete by hitting ctrl+space after typing "$s-". In the the hint window that follows, there is the item "say()". This is because the javadoc says say_something returns a Dummy and NetBeans parsed Dummy class to know that it has a method called "say()". So far so good. My problem is with arrays. Example code follows: /** * Builds array of 2 dummy classes and returns it. * @return Array The dummy class. (*) */ function say_something2(){ return array(new Dummy(),new Dummy()); } $s=say_something2(); If I try the auto-complete thing again but with "$s[0]-" instead, I don't get the methods fro Dummy class. This is because in the JavaDoc I only said that it is an array, but not the values' type. So the question would be, is there any JavaDoc syntax, cheat, whatever which allows me to tell JavaDoc what type of variables to expect in an array?

• Poor DB4O performance - What am I doing wrong?

  I read Rob Conery's post about Object databases and thought I'd give it a go. I have a class lets say Book with 15 properties mostly string, some int, one Datetime and 2 decimals. I used Rob's code to open the database file etc to test on a Winforms project not a Web project. So I did the following: for(int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++) { var Book = new Book(); //Assign variables s.Save(Book); } s.CommitChanges(); This took at least a couple of minutes. I then tried to retrieve all data to test speed: var spp = s.All<Passports>(); This one line was quick, however, then doing: sppp.Count() as well as a seperate test doing a foreach loop and incrementing a counter took a couple of minutes. This seems quite slow to me. Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting too much?

• ActionScript 3.0 Getting Size/Coordinates From Loader Content

• Is it normal for C++ static initialization to appear twice in the same backtrace?

  I'm trying to debug a C++ program compiled with GCC that freezes at startup. GCC mutex protects function's static local variables, and it appears that waiting to acquire such a lock is why it freezes. How this happens is rather confusing. First module A's static initialization occurs (there are __static_init functions GCC invokes that are visible in the backtrace), which calls a function Foo(), that has a static local variable. The static local variable is an object who's constructor calls through several layers of functions, then suddenly the backtrace has a few ??'s, and then it's is in the static initialization of a second module B (the __static functions occur all over again), which then calls Foo(), but since Foo() never returned the first time the mutex on the local static variable is still set, and it locks. How can one static init trigger another? My first theory was shared libraries -- that module A would be calling some function in module B that would cause module B to load, thus triggering B's static init, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Module A doesn't use module B at all. So I have a second (and horrifying) guess. Say that: Module A uses some templated function or a function in a templated class, e.g. foo<int>::bar() Module B also uses foo<int>::bar() Module A doesn't depend on module B at all At link time, the linker has two instances of foo<int>::bar(), but this is OK because template functions are marked as weak symbols... At runtime, module A calls foo<int>::bar, and the static init of module B is triggered, even though module B doesn't depend on module A! Why? Because the linker decided to go with module B's instance of foo::bar instead of module A's instance at link time. Is this particular scenario valid? Or should one module's static init never trigger static init in another module?

• How can I create a new Person object correctly in Javascript?

The second Person2 set alerts "sal", then "bill", but it fails when the showPrivate function is called. The new keyword here works as I'd expect, but showPrivate (which I thought was a publicly exposed function within the closure) is apparently not public. I want to get my object to have distinct copies of all local variables and also expose public methods -- I've been studying closures quite a bit, but I'm still confused on this one. • Trying to set up nested while loops using a boolean switch

  First time posting. I'm trying to set up a while loop that will ask the user for the employee name, hours worked and hourly wage until the user enters 'DONE'. Eventually I'll modify the code to calculate the weekly pay and write it to a list, but one thing at a time. The problem is once the main while loop executes once, it just stops. Doesn't error out but just stops. I have to kill the program to get it to stop. I want it to ask the three questions again and again until the user is finished. Thoughts? • Why is this attempt at a binary search crashing?

  I am fairly new to the concept of a binary search, and am trying to write a program that does this in Java for personal practice. I understand the concept of this well, but my code is not working. There is a run-time exception happening in my code that just caused Eclipse, and then my computer, to crash... there are no compile-time errors here though.
