  • Realtime MySQL search results on an advanced search page

    I'm a hobbyist, and started learning PHP last September solely to build a hobby website that I had always wished and dreamed another more competent person might make. I enjoy programming, but I have little free time and enjoy a wide range of other interests and activities. I feel learning PHP alone can probably allow me to create 98% of the desired features for my site, but that last 2% is awfully appealing: The most powerful tool of the site is an advanced search page that picks through a 1000+ record game scenario database. Users can data-mine to tremendous depths - this advanced page has upwards of 50 different potential variables. It's designed to allow the hardcore user to search on almost any possible combination of data in our database and it works well. Those who aren't interested in wading through the sea of options may use the Basic Search, which is comprised of the most popular parts of the Advanced search. Because the advanced search is so comprehensive, and because the database is rather small (less than 1,200 potential hits maximum), with each variable you choose to include the likelihood of getting any qualifying results at all drops dramatically. In my fantasy land where I can wield AJAX as if it were Excalibur, my users would have a realtime Total Results counter in the corner of their screen as they used this page, which would automatically update its query structure and report how many results will be displayed with the addition of each variable. In this way it would be effortless to know just how many variables are enough, and when you've gone and added one that zeroes out the results set. A somewhat similar implementation, at least visually, would be the Subtotal sidebar when building a new custom computer on IBuyPower.com For those of you actually still reading this, my question is really rather simple: Given the time & ability constraints outlined above, would I be able to learn just enough AJAX (or whatever) needed to pull this one feature off without too much trouble? would I be able to more or less drop-in a pre-written code snippet and tweak to fit? or should I consider opening my code up to a trusted & capable individual in the future for this implementation?     We have a strange problem in Safari. When the user logs out of our Web Application we expire the forms authentication with the following FormsAuthentication.SignOut(); Session.Abandon(); This works fine in IE and Firefox (when the user hits the back button they are presented with a page expired message and are forced to login) but in Safari the last page the user was working on shows up. I tried many of the suggested thinks like setting the Response.Expires but nothing helps , Has anyone faced this problem ? Do u have any suggestion / workarounds ? Thanks

    Hi every one, I am very much new to Drupal but am loving it to start with. I got struck at a point with respect to theaming. I have a region called 'footer-teaser' just above footer. Its width is 800px. its been split into 3 equal size columns. Each column has the following. Image of size 120x120 Some teaser text Link to 'read more' The design requirement is all the above should be editable by the admin from the admin interface. If its static i would have hardcoded this but since the requirement is dynamic, i am not aware of how to achieve this. I have customised page.tpl for other sections of the page except this. I am sure someone else would have faced this issue before and was wondering if anyone can direct me in the right direction? Even better if an example is provided. Cheers RD

    I have a big problem while evaluate my java code. To simplify the problem I wrote the following code which produce the same curious behavior. Important is the method run() and given double value rate. For my runtime test (in the main method) I set the rate to 0.5 one times and 1.0 the other time. With the value 1.0 the if-statement will be executed in each loop iteration and with the value 0.5 the if-statement will be executed half as much. For this reason I expected longer runtime by the first case but opposite is true. Can anybody explain me this phenomenon??     Our website was just converted to being generated by mod_rewrite and php scripts. Images aren't caching in browsers when they seemingly should be. All images follow format: <img src="/images/header.png" /> I must avoid the script completely caching because the PHP parser needs to handle each page dynamically on each request; however, the download overhead of the large images is cumbersome on every single page load. I would ideally provide headers for "Cache-Control: no-cache, must-revalidate" and "Expires: some_date_in_the_past" to force revalidation of the PHP script. Why isn't the browser caching static images with consistent href values across all pages?

I need help writing .htaccess rules that will Serve the index.php file when www.domain.org is requested Force the user back to public_html when www.domain.org/pics is requested Allow the user to see the directory contents when www.domain.org/pics/family is requested I experimented with a lot of combinations of RewriteCond and RewriteRule, but I don't understand the documentation and examples well enough to know if what I want to do is even possible. The web server application is some version of Apache.

  • Suggestions for performance improvement surrounding sending email notifications?

    It takes around a couple of seconds for my app to execute the code to send an email right now on a test server with nothing much else running. Not sure if this is typical/expected. I'm also using the php framework Kohana's email helper and not php's mail directly out of convenience if that matters. Is it always just better to schedule a cron job to send emails every 5 min or so? Or should I be able to send emails immediately and I'm just not doing something right? What the script does is insert a row into the db and notifies the relevant group that the row was created. The groups are usually < 20 people so I just do a loop calling Kohana's email helper each time for each member of the group.

  • Image creation performance / image caching

    Hello, I'm writing an application that has a scrollable image (used to display a map). The map background consists of several tiles (premade from a big JPG file), that I draw on a Graphics object. I also use a cache (Hashtable), to prevent from having to create every image when I need it. I don't keep everything in memory, because that would be too much. The problem is that when I'm scrolling through the map, and I need an image that wasn't cached, it takes about 60-80 ms to create it. Depending on screen resolution, tile size and scroll direction, this can occur multiple times in one scroll operation (for different tiles). In my case, it often happens that this needs to be done 4 times, which introduces a delay of more than 300 ms, which is extremely noticeable. The easiest thing for me would be that there's some way to speed up the creation of Images, but I guess that's just wishful thinking... Besides that, I suppose the most obvious thing to do is to load the tiles predictively (e.g. when scrolling to the right, precache the tiles to the right), but then I'm faced with the rather difficult task of thinking up a halfway decent algorithm for this. My actual question then is: how can I best do this predictive loading? Maybe I could offload the creation of images to a separate thread? Other things to consider? Thanks in advance.

I've read that doing a lot of DOM manipulations can be dangerous, but the for loops a max of 286 times (# of verses in surah 2, the longest surah in the Qur'an).

    Hello, I have a table in my php code. In the second column of the table, normally it displays "---", and after i click the submit button, it will display the calculating result in the same page. If so, how can I tackle this? Should I cache the results somewhere, like in this case, I would cache the entire Classifications table in Memory Cache? And then do queries vs this cached object? Or should I make TicDatabaseEntities variable static and initialize it at class level? Should my class be static if it contains only static methods? Because right now it is not.. Also I've noticed that if I return result.First() instead of FirstOrDefault() and the query does not find a match, it will issue an exception (with FirstOrDefault() there is no exception, it returns null).   • Using css "active tab" technique on single page

    I'm building a navigation system using jquery scrollto. I have my navigation menu in a separate file (( navigation.php )). It is included in 5 locations on the first page (( 5 different sections w/ text following each )). I'm trying to figure out a way to have the current "tab" highlight'd. I could hard code the navigation in each location to ensure it shows up the correct way, but I'd rather use the phpinclude() method. The other issue is that each "tab" has it's own unique color (( cmykd )). Here is the alpha version of what I'm doing (( when you click && the page slides, the "active tab" still stays grey -- I'd like it to be the corresponding color )).     My iPhone app relies on a vendor's XML feed to provide data. But that feed is not locked down. The vendor could change the format of the XML at any time, although so far they've promised not to. Since I might want to tell my app to use a different URL for its data source, I'd like to set up a single "Command Central" Web page, on my own server, to direct the app to the correct data source. In other words, each time my app starts, in the background and unseen by the user, it would visit "http://www.myserver.com/iphoneapp_data_sources.xml" to retrieve the URL for retrieving data from my vendor. That way, if my vendor suddenly changes the exact URL or the XML feed that the app needs, I can update that Web page and ensure that all installations of the app are using the correct XML feed. Does anyone have any advice or examples showing this kind of approach? It seems as if this must be a common problem, but so far I haven't found a well-established design pattern that fits it.

    ok i have another question ! (god! i have so many questions) i have an application and a user must log-in before he/she can access pages. now once the user logs in i keep the user details in a session variable (say Session["CurrentUser"]). now if a user tries to jump to a page directly i will check if the Session["CurrentUser"] has a value or not...if not then the user will be directed to the login page... my problem is that i have done this or rather say written this "Checking Code" on almost all the pages. what i want is this code to stay on a particular location and i will just access that method all the time on all the pages...now where should i write this method ?? thank you.

  • Performance issue finding weekdays over a given period

    I have some methods that return the number of weekdays between two given dates. Since calling these methods become very expensive to call when the two dates lie years apart, I'm wondering how these methods could be refactored in a more efficient way. The returned result is correct but I feel that the iphone processor is struggling to keep up and consequently freezes up the application when I would call these methods over a period of say 10years.     I was just reading this article here to understand about how view state and ASP.NET page cycle works. I just don't understand this part here: If this were the case, then in step 3 the Label's Text property would be assigned to "Hello, World!" in the instantiation stage, but would not be reassigned to "Goodbye, Everyone!" in the load view state stage. Therefore, from the end user's perspective, the Label's Text property would be "Goodbye, Everyone!" in step 2, but would seemingly be reset to its original value ("Hello, World!") in step 3, after clicking the Empty Postback button. This paragraph is after the three step 1, step 2, step 3 boxes. Why wouldn't the label's text property be reassigned to "Goodbye, Everyone" in the load view state?
