• What is the right tool to detect VMT or heap corruption in Delphi ?

  I'm a member in a team that use Delphi 2007 for a larger application and we suspect heap corruption because sometimes there are strange bugs that have no other explanation. I believe that the Rangechecking option for the compiler is only for arrays. I want a tool that give an exception or log when there is a write on a memory address that is not allocated by the application. Unfortunately I think that the solution is deeper than that. We use a patched version of Bold for Delphi as we own the source. Probably there are some errors introduced in the Bold framwork. Yes we have a log with callstacks that are handled by JCL and also trace messages. EDIT3: The theory right now is that the Virtual Memory Table (VMT) is somehow broken. When this happen there is no indication of it. Only when a method is called an exception is raised (ALWAYS on address FFFFFFDD, -35 decimal) but then it is too late. You don't know the real cause for the error. Any hint of how to catch a bug like this is really appreciated!!! We have tried with SafeMM, but the problem is that the memory consumption is too high even when the 3 GB flag is used. So now I try to give a bounty to the SO community :) EDIT4: One hint is that according the log there is often (or even always) another exception before this. It can be for example optimistic locking in the database. We have tried to raise exceptions by force but in test environment it just works fine. EDIT5: Story continues... I did a search on the logs for the last 30 days now. The result: "Read of address FFFFFFDB" 0 "Read of address FFFFFFDC" 24 "Read of address FFFFFFDD" 270 "Read of address FFFFFFDE" 22 "Read of address FFFFFFDF" 7 "Read of address FFFFFFE0" 20 "Read of address FFFFFFE1" 0 So the current theory is that an enum (there is a lots in Bold) overwrite a pointer. I got 5 hits with different address above. It could mean that the enum holds 5 values where the second one is most used. If there is an exception a rollback should occur for the database and Boldobjects should be destroyed. Maybe there is a chance that not everything is destroyed and a enum still can write to an address location. If this is true maybe it is possible to search the code by a regexpr for an enum with 5 values ? EDIT6: To summarize, no there is no solution to the problem yet. I realize that I may mislead you a bit with the callstack. Yes there are a timer in that but there are other callstacks without a timer. Sorry for that. But there are 2 common factors. An exception with Read of address FFFFFFxx. Top of callstack is System.TObject.InheritsFrom (sys\system.pas:9237) This convince me that VilleK best describe the problem. I'm also convinced that the problem is somewhere in the Bold framework. But the BIG question is, how can problems like this be solved ? It is not enough to have an Assert like VilleK suggest as the damage has already happened and the callstack is gone at that moment. So to describe my view of what may cause the error: Somewhere a pointer is assigned a bad value 1, but it can be also 0, 2, 3 etc. An object is assigned to that pointer. There is method call in the objects baseclass. This cause method TObject.InheritsForm to be called and an exception appear on address FFFFFFDD. Those 3 events can be together in the code but they may also be used much later. I think this is true for the last method call. EDIT7: We work closely with the the author of Bold Jan Norden and he recently found a bug in the OCL-evaluator in Bold framework. When this was fixed these kinds of exceptions decreased a lot but they still occasionally come. But it is a big relief that this is almost solved.

• Communication with HyperTerminal [ QT and WINApi ]

  Hi! I write program to communicate with modem (it useing Hayes commands) and this is working. GUI is programmed with QT, but communication with COM port is write with winapi library. I have problem when I want to send with my program message from one computer to another, i can't send Polish chars (they are repleaced by '?'), how can I fix it ? Does anyone have idea ?? And I have one more problem, I can't send message from my program to Microsoft HyperTerminal, HyperTerminal receive something, but not that what I send.   Here is the error saying bcrypt was not loaded. The rails app is not using the Devise for authentication and gem bcrypt is not in Gemfile. Sometime, the webserver throws out the error saying spawn server can not start. gem list shows that both bcrypt-ruby 3.0.1 and 3.0.0 were installed. • Contributing to a Linux distribution

  I'm interested in contributing to a Linux distro, but regarding the various distro's developer communities, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out which one I'd most like to join. What languages I know: C, C++, Lua, Python, and fairly familiar with Perl (though I wouldn't say I "know" it). In particular, I have very little experience with x86 assembly besides hacking stuff together for performance tweaks, though that will be partially rectified soon. What I'm looking for: A community that provides plenty of opportunities for developers to work on various aspects of the distribution. To be honest I'm most interested in reading and working on the kernel source (in which case the distro doesn't matter), but it's pretty daunting and I figure getting into the Linux community and working with experienced Linux developers might give me a better idea of how to jump into the guts(let me know if this is bogus, or if you have any advice regarding that). So... Which distro has the "best" developer community in terms of organization, people who are fun to work with, and opportunities to contribute? I've read various "Contributing to XXX" pages and mailing lists for distros like Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Fedora, etc. but I'd rather get a more personal testament from an actual developer.

• how to compile with llvm and g++?

  Hi, I use a fedora-11 system and recently I installed llvm ( sudo yum -y install llvm llvm-docs llvm-devel ). When I search for llvm I get them in /usr/bin. some of the links to the binaries are broken(llvm-gcc,llvm-g++,llvm-cpp,etc.) the include files are found within /usr/include/llvm and libs at /usr/lib/llvm. How to compile them using g++? I tried to compile the kaleidoscope code given in the tutorial (http://llvm.org/docs/tutorial/LangImpl3.html) as per directed, but it fails to compile.. • theoretical and practical matrix multiplication FLOP

  I wrote traditional matrix multiplication in c++ and tried to measure and compare its theoretical and practical FLOP. As I know inner loop of MM has 2 operation therefore simple MM theoretical Flops is 2*n*n*n (2n^3) but in practice I get something like 4n^3 + number of operation which is 2 i.e. 6n^3 also if I just try to add up only one array a[i][j]++ practical flops then calculate like 3n^3 and not n^3 as you see again it is 2n^3 +1 operation and not 1 operation * n^3 . This is in case if I use 1D array in three nested loops as Matrix multiplication and compare flop, practical flop is the same (near) the theoretical flop and depend exactly as the number of operation in inner loop.I could not find the reason for this behaviour. what is the reason in both case? • Hung JVM consuming 100% CPU

  We have a JAVA server running on Sun JRE 6u20 on Linux 32-bit (CentOS). We use the Server Hotspot with CMS collector with the following options (I've only provided the relevant ones): -Xmx896m -Xss128k -XX:NewSize=384M -XX:MaxPermSize=96m -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Sometimes, after running for a while, the JVM seems to slip into a hung state, whereby even though we don't make any requests to the application, the CPU continues to spin at 100% (we have 8 logical CPUs, so it looks like only one CPU does the spinning). In this state the JVM doesn't respond to SIGHUP signals (kill -3) and we can't connect to it normally with jstack. We CAN connect with "jstack -F", but the output is dodgy (we can see lots of NullPointerExceptions from JStack apparently because it wasn't able to 'walk' some stacks). So the "jstack -F" output seems to be useless. We have checked the memory usage on the box, there seems to be enough memory available and the system is not swapping. Has anyone come across such a situation? Does it look like a JVM bug? UPDATE I've obtained some more information about this problem (it happened again on a server that has been running for more than 7 days). When the JVM entered the "hung" state it stayed like that for 2 hours until the server was manually restarted. We have obtained a core dump of the process and the gc log. We tried to get a heap dump as well, but "jmap" failed. We tried to use jmap -F but then only a 4Mb file was written before the program aborted with an exception (something about the a memory location not being accessible). So far I think the most interesting information comes from the gc log. Also, the gc log stops suddenly with that message and nothing else gets printed any more, probably because the VM Thread gets into some sort of infinite loop (or something that takes 2+ hours).

I have a problem where it seems that the HttpWebRequest class in the framework is not correctly parsing the cookies from a web response.   All, I am working on a Zend Framework based web application. We keep encountering out of memory errors on our dev server: Allowed memory size of XXXX bytes exhausted (tried YYYY... We keep increasing memory_limit in php.ini, but it is now up over 1000 megs. What is a normal memory_limit value? What are the usual suspects in php/Zend for running out of memory? We are using the Propel ORM. Thanks for all of the help! Update I cannot reproduce this error in my windows environment. If I set memory_limit low (say 16M), I get the same error, but the "tried to allocate" amount is always something reasonable. For example: (tried to allocate 13344 bytes) If I set the memory very low on the (Fedora 9) server (such as 16M), I get the same thing. consistent, reasonable out of memory errors. However, even when the memory limit is set very high on our server (128M, for example), maybe once a week, I will get an crazy huge memory error: (tried to allocate 1846026201 bytes). I don't know if that might shed any more light onto what is going on. We are using propel 1.5. It sounds like the actual release is going to come out later this month, but it doesn't look like anyone else is having this problem with it anyway. I don't know that Propel is the problem. We are using Zend Server with php 5.2 on the Linux box, and 5.3 locally. Any more ideas? I have a ticket out to get Xdebug installed on the Linux box. Thanks, -rep

• Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

  As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. • Deployed a Zend App on EC2 and its not working

  Hey Guys, I'm confused about the problem and not sure if I can provide enough details. I have a php app built on Zend framework which I've successfully deployed on other hosting companies. I am now trying to move to Amazon EC2 I moved all my code and set my domain to point to the IP address. So far so good. Now when I access my home page say www.example.com - everything looks good - The home page opens up which means the IndexController is being called and the index method is properly executed which pulls data from the database and displays it in the index.phtml page. So this lets me to believe that everything is working fine. But every link I click on the home page whether its a simple contact us link - or any other action that I directly try to call even through the URL results in 404 Not Found The requested URL /user/add was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.9 (Fedora) Server at www.example.com Port 80 The interesting thing is the home page opens up fine when I call www.example.com but when I give the entire path which is www.example.com/index/index - I get the same above error. I have checked the logs and there are no errors. Has anyone encountered something similar or have any idea if I'm missing a simple step or something like rewrite rule maybe. I am programmitically downloading and installing a new stationery into Outlook by saving a htm file into the users App Data folder and then updating the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\MailSettings\NewTheme registry key which sets which stationery that is currently in use. So far everything is fine for 2007, but I have checked a PC that is running Outlook 2010, and this registry key is in a different spot. Instead of 12.0 as the version it is 14.0, which makes sense. Is there anyway I can determine what version the plugin is installed in, so that I can write the key based on the correct version in the correct location?!? I haven't been able to find anything on this so far, but surely there is a way..?!? Thanks in advance. Chris

• IE HTTPS Ajax request image not showing up

  Hi: In IE (7 or 8) and HTTPS mode, following RESPONSE is delivered for an AJAX request. My issue is the img was NOT requested at all by IE (figured out using Fiddler), broken img is shown instead. It all works perfectly in HTTP mode in IE and other browsers no problem rendering in both mode (please don't tell me not to use IE). Any thoughts/work-arounds/suggestions? • mysql-python stopped working

  This is a rather dumb question but i'am looking at a bizarre situation. I am running fedora and have python 2.6.5 installed. The other day i installed MySQL-python using yum (because i do not have the setuptools module so i cannot build it from source). Anyway yesterday i wrote my entire data access layer in python and it was running fine, i did test it. Today however it gives me an ImportError: No module named MySQLdb The only thing i ever changed was i installed eclipse and pyDev. Any ideas on what went wrong and how i fix it. I tried removing and re-installing MySql-python but that did not help. I did the following import sys print sys.path And it shows me all the paths which are basically pertaining to /usr/local/lib/python2.6 However i was trying to find where the MySQLdb module is installed and it seems that its installed in /usr/lib/python2.5/sitepackages Now i have no idea why it got installed there and why it was working earlier and why it stopped working now. Any ideas on how i should fix it. I did try copying the site-packages folder over to the python2.6 folder but that did not work Help!!

  I'm interning for an NGO in India and trying to fix their website, including updating their menu so it's not the last item on the page to load, and it's centered on the screen. Everything works well enough but when I try out my new menu in IE6, I get this weird error where the content below the menu is padded an extra 30px or so and the material in the right-most drop down appears on the far left of the screen, always visible. When I drop down the rightmost link ("Publications") the content appears both in the correct location and in the same spot on the far left of the screen, and changes color when I hover as well. • Trouble updating my datagrid in WPF

  As the title indicates, I'm having trouble updating a datagrid in WPF. Basically what I'm trying to accomplish is a datagrid, that is connected to a SQL Server database, that updates automatically once a user enters information into a few textboxes and clicks a submit button. You'll notice that I have a command that joins two tables. The data from the Quote_Data table will be inserted by a different user at a later time. For now my only concern is getting the information from the textboxes and into the General_Info table, and from there into my datagrid. The code, which I'll include below compiles fine, but when I hit the submit button, nothing happens. I don't know where the problem is and I hope to know how to solve it.
