Use backups if unavailable (not just down)

Using haproxy, I want: A pool of 'main' servers and 'backup' servers, though they don't necessarily have to be in separate pools. Each backend has a low 'maxconn' (in this case 1) Clients should not wait in a queue. If there are no immediately available servers in the 'main' pool they should be shunted to the 'backup' pool without delay. Right now I have one backend, 'main' servers have an absurdly high weighting and it 'works'. acl use_backend + connslots is along the right lines but without the patch in my own answer it isn't perfect. Bonus points for not requiring a modified haproxy binary.

How can I push a git repository to a folder over SSH?

I have a folder called my-project inside which I've done git init, git commit -a, etc. Now I want to push it to an empty folder at /mnt/foo/bar on a remote server. How can I do this? I did try, based on what I'd read: cd my-project git remote add origin ssh://user@host/mnt/foo/bar/my-project.git git push origin master which didn't seem right (I'd assume source would come before destination) and it failed: fatal: '/mnt/boxee/git/midwinter-physiotherapy.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly I'd like this to work such that I don't have to access the remote host and manually init a git repository every time ... do I have to do that? Am I going down the right route at all? Thanks.

Finding Font Issues in Acrobat

Ok let me try this again, so sorry for not be clear. We create our PDFs through Quark, then send to print. I usually create outlines on my EPS files before I load in Quark but forgot this time. We bypassed the font error that Quark gave us by accident and found out our PDF was bad too late and it cost a lot of money to fix. We are trying to find a way to check our PDF for font problems before we send it to print, in case this problem happens again. We just want to be extra sure that we have tried everything. What I see in Quark is what the font is supposed to look like. When I view my PDF, the text is mixed up. Its readable but doesn't look like its supposed to and the spacing is all off within the text. My boss told me about the preflight in Quark and the Internal Structure for the fonts. She was asking me if this would help and what the lingo all meant. (which is where my first question started) The image on the left is my EPS that is correct, the image on the right is from the PDF. The white text in the top right and the website at the bottom left is what is messed up. I am running Mac 10.5.8, Quark 7.5 and Acrobat 8.3.1. Thanks, Jayme

Windows 7 user limitation

I just installed Windows 7 pro x64 from Dreamspark (MSDNAA). But i can't figure out how to configure it. 1/ When I want to acces some folders a pop up show up and tells me "that I need administrator acces to do it" I click the "continue" button and I can go inside the folder. What was even the point in showing me this pop up? how can I remove it? 2/ In some folder when I do a right clic I can only create a new folder, not a new text file, not a rar, nothing. In the same folder I also cannot extract RAR (by doing right clic, extract here) Any Idea how to get back full control? Thanks.

Using (embedding?) wireshark in a C application for sniffing

I'm writing a C/C++ application which needs (among other things) to sniff packets and save the output in a file. This file will be read and processed by wireshark after a few days, using a LUA script to do some other stuff. My question is for the sniffing part which must be provided by my application. I can see two ways to do this: 1) Fork the wireshark process in background (of course using the command line version) 2) Using wireshark as library: no forking but include stuff like "wireshark.h" and link against libwireshark.so, thus using function calls to do the sniffing. So far I haven't found any documentation about #2 and it seems that #1 is the "right way" to embed sniffing capabilities in my code. Do you think I'm doing he right thing? Does wireshark allow embedding as a library?

Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot. Mapping Ctrl+Arrow for Home/End/PageUp/Down

I'm using Windows 7 on Dell New Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. It doesn't have Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Instead I have to use Fn + arrow keys. Can I re-map those to Ctrl + arrows or Alt + arrows or Shift + arrows? That way I could go one page up and down with only my right hands rather than with the left hand on the Fn key and right hand on arrow key. Also, volume up and down is assigned to FnF11 and FnF12. Can I re-map them to F11 and F12? Existing functions assigned to F11 and F12 will be replaced by FnF11 and FnF12. Is it possible?

CTRL-X not showing the bottom menu (compatible/nocompatible issue)

I'm having some strange behavior in vim. When I press C-X in insert-mode, I see ^X flashing quickly in the bottom right, but I don't get the menu at the bottom. The keybindings seems to work just find anyway: C-X C-L gives me line completion. I've managed to find out how to "fix" this, but it just doesn't seem right.. set compatible? echoes nocompatible. If I set it to compatible and then back to nocompatible, everything works. Trying the following at the end of my .vimrc doesn't help, and then I get some warnings from scripts. Any idea what's causing this and how I can fix this?

perfmon.exe itself taking 52.71% of cpu on windows 7 after chrome dies?

On my Windows 7 machine (build 7100, x64, Dell XPS M1710 laptop), I'm getting horrible performance after chrome crashes. I kill the chrome process from the Resource Monitor, but after that perfmon.exe itself is shown as taking about 50% of the cpu (52.31% right now). Quitting Performance Monitor, then starting it again, shows perfmon starting out with a reasonable CPU, but it quickly (ten seconds) shoots right back up. Suggestions? So far a reboot seems to be the only way to solve the problem. I'm assuming that the perfmon issue is just a symptom of the real problem. (Update, much later: this never got resolved. I'm not seeing the problem in the RTM Win7 + latest Chrome. Yes, it was a core 2 duo, so presumably Chrome was running full blast on one cpu.)

Help with Collapse and Expand Accordion at same time using JQuery (demo)

I'm stuck on an Expand/Collapse accordion using JQuery. After the initial headline is clicked and it expands, if you click to another headline it will collapse the former headline completely FIRST then it will expand the headline you clicked. This collapse first then expand second technique is very distracting and what should happen is as the headline is expanding it should collapse the initial headline. What am I missing? Multiple viewport problem

I'm setting up so I can switch between either one or four viewports but I got some trouble. In my bottom right viewport I got camera view, the same camera that I can switch to full view on. UIScrollView zoomToRect not zooming to given rect (created from UITouch CGPoint)

My application has a UIScrollView with one subview. The subview is an extended UIView which prints a PDF page to itself using layers in the drawLayer event. Zooming using the built in pinching works great. setZoomScale also works as expected. I have been struggling with the zoomToRect function. I found an example online which makes a CGRect zoomRect variable from a given CGPoint. In the touchesEnded function, if there was a double tap and they are all the way zoomed out, I want to zoom in to that PDFUIView I created as though they were pinching out with the center of the pinch where they double tapped. So assume that I pass the UITouch variable to my function which utilizes zoomToRect if they double tap. I started with the following function I found on apples site: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/WindowsViews/Conceptual/UIScrollView_pg/ZoomZoom/ZoomZoom.html The following is a modified version for my UIScrollView extended class: - (void)zoomToCenter:(float)scale withCenter:(CGPoint)center { CGRect zoomRect; zoomRect.size.height = self.frame.size.height / scale; zoomRect.size.width = self.frame.size.width / scale; zoomRect.origin.x = center.x - (zoomRect.size.width / 2.0); zoomRect.origin.y = center.y - (zoomRect.size.height / 2.0); //return zoomRect; [self zoomToRect:zoomRect animated:YES]; } When I do this, the UIScrollView seems to zoom using the bottom right edge of the zoomRect above and not the center. If I make UIView like this UIView *v = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:zoomRect]; [v setBackgroundColor:[UIView redColor]]; [self addSubview:v]; The red box shows up with the touch point dead in the center. Please note: I am writing this from my PC, I recall messing around with the divided by two part on my Mac, so just assume that this draws a rect with the touch point in the center. If the UIView drew off center but zoomed to the right spot it would be all good. However, what happens is when it preforms the zoomToRect it seems to use the bottom right off the zoomRect at the top left of the zoomed in results. Also, I noticed that depending on where I click on the UIScrollView, it anchors to diffrent spots. It almost seems like there is a cross down the middle and it's reflecting the points somehow as though anywhere left of the middle is a negative reflection and anywhere right of the middle is a positive reflection? This seems to complicated, shouldn't it just zoom to the rect that was drawn as the UIView was able to draw? I used a lot of research to figure out how to create a PDF that scales in high quality, so I am assuming that using the CALayer may be throwing off the coordinate system? But to the UIScrollView it should just treat it as a view with 768x985 dimensions. This is sort of advanced, please assume the code for creating the zoomRect is all good. There is something deeper with the CALayer in the UIView which is in the UIScrollView....

Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? Rails & combo box change event: Help make this obtrusive javascript unobtrusive

Ok so a friend of mine gave some help with a prototype/obtrusive solution to this but its not quite there. Also, I want to make this unobtrusive instead of using the observe_field function that rails gives me. I don't want to use prototype either because I'm more familiar with JQuery. Here's my problem: I have an Event that can have multiple ServiceTypes and a ServiceType can belong to many Events. A many-to-many relationship between these two exists as an OfferedService. When creating an event, I have a drop down with a list of TimeAllotments that are something like 10 minutes, 12 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes etc. When the user selects one of these choices, I want a div tag to be filled with a list of ServiceTypes that are associated with this TimeAllotment. So for example, the user selects "10 minutes" and then the div repopulates with services that last 10 minutes. I have looked at Ryan's rails casts for using JQuery but its not helpful because he deals with ajax calls for the create action. This would be for the new or edit action. I have a new.js.erb but it doesn't get loaded when calling the new action. I'm super lost as far as getting JQuery to work with my application. I think that if someone can just show me how to make an alert pop up when I change the combo box, and how to return a dataset using ajax the right now, I think I can figure out the rest. Thanks, I know this is super complicated so any helpful answers will get an upvote.

Sidebar with CSS3 transform

Goal I'm working on a collapsible sidebar using jQuery for animation. I would like to have vertical text on the sidebar that acts as a label and can swap on the animateOut/animateIn effect. Normally I would use an image of the text that I've simply swapped vertically, and switch it out on animation, but with CSS3 transforms I'd like to get it to work instead. Problem The problem I'm facing is that setting the height on my rotated container makes it expand horizontally (as it's rotated 90deg) so that doesn't work. I then tried to set the width (hoping it would expand vertically, acting as height), but that has an odd effect of causing the width of my parent container to expand as well. Fix? Anyone know why this happens and also what the fix/workaround could be without setting max-widths and overflow: hidden? I've got a fairly good understanding of both html elements behavior and css3, but this is stumping me. In this tutorial I’ll show you how to install AJAX Control toolkit step by step: You can download AJAX Toolkit .NET 4 “Apr 12 2010” released before 4 days, from http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475#DownloadId=116534, Once downloaded, extract AjaxControlToolkit.Binary.NET4 on your computer, then extract AjaxControlToolkitSampleSite. after that you need to open Visual Studio 2010, So we will add the toolkit to the toolbox. To do that press right-click in an empty space on your toolbox, then choose Add Tab. You can rename the new tab to be “Ajax Toolkit” for example : Then when it is added, right-click under the tab and select Choose Items: When the dialog box appears Choose .NET Framework Components tab then click Browse button and find AjaxControlToolkit folder that you installed the AJAX Control Toolkit. In that directory you will find a sub-directory called AjaxControlToolkitSampleSite, and under that folder you will find bin Folder, in this folder choose AjaxControlToolkit.DLL which 5.59 MB. The result of these steps, Visual Studio will load all the controls from the DLL file and by default it will be checked in this list: To submit your steps press OK button. Few days ago, I wrote about SQL SERVER – Out of the Box – Activity and Performance Reports from SSSMS (Link). A user asked me a question regarding if we can use similar reports to get the detail about Indexes. Yes, it is possible to do the same. There are similar type of reports are available at Database level, just like those available at the Server Instance level. You can right click on Database name and click Reports. Under Standard Reports, you will find following reports. Disk Usage Disk Usage by Top Tables Disk Usage by Table Disk Usage by Partition Backup and Restore Events All Transactions All Blocking Transactions Top Transactions by Age Top Transactions by Blocked Transactions Count Top Transactions by Locks Count Resource Locking Statistics by Objects Object Execute Statistics Database Consistency history Index Usage Statistics Index Physical Statistics Schema Change history User Statistics Select the Reports with name Index Physical Statistics. Once click, a report containing all the index names along with other information related to index will be visible, e.g. Index Type and number of partitions. One column that caught my interest was Operation Recommended. In some place, it suggested that index needs to be rebuilt. It is also possible to click and expand the column of partitions and see additional details about index as well. DBA and Developers who just want to have idea about how your index is and its physical statistics can use this tool. Integrating Silverlight BING Maps with SharePoint 2010

Convert OpenGL code to DirectX

First of all, this is kind of a follow up question on @byte56 excellent anwser on this question concerning picking algorithms. I'm trying to convert one of his code examples to directX 11 however I have run into some problems ( I can pick but the picking is way off), and I wanted to make sure I had done it right before moving on and checking the rest of my code. I am not that familiar with openGl but I can imagine openGl has different coordinations systems, and functions that alters how you must implement to code a bit. The getPickRay function on the answer linked is what I'm trying to convert. This is the part of my code that I think is giving me trouble when converting from openGl to directX Because I'm unsure on how their different coordination systems differs from one another. PRVecX = ((( 2.0f * mouseX) / ClientWidth ) - 1 ) * tan((viewAngle)/2); PRVecY = (1-(( 2.0f * mouseY) / ClientHeight)) * tan((viewAngle)/2); Another thing that I am unsure about is this part: XMVECTOR worldSpaceNear = XMVector3TransformCoord(cameraSpaceNear, invMat); XMVECTOR worldSpaceFar = XMVector3TransformCoord(cameraSpaceFar, invMat); A couple of notes: The mouse coordinates are already converted so that the top left corner of the client window would be (0,0) and the bottom right (800,600) ( or whatever resolution you would have) The viewAngle is the same angle that I used when setting the camera view with XMMatrixPerspectiveFovLH. I removed the variables aspectRatio and zoomFactor because I assumed that they were related to some specific function of his game. To summarize it up to questions : Does the openGL coordination system differ in such a way that this equation in the first of my code examples wouldn't be valid when used in DirectX 11 ( with its respective screen coordination system)? Is the openGL method Matrix4f.transform(a, b, c) equal to the directX method c = XMVector3TransformCoord(b,a)? (where a is a matrix and b,c are vectors). Because I know when it comes to matrices order is important.

Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Extensibility in VS 2010 VS 2010 provides a much richer extensibility model than previous releases. Anyone can build extensions that add, customize, and light-up the Visual Studio 2010 IDE, Code Editors, Project System and associated Designers. VS 2010 Extensions can be created using the new MEF (Managed Extensibility Framework) which is built-into .NET 4. You can learn more about how to create VS 2010 extensions from this this blog post from the Visual Studio Team Blog. VS 2010 Extension Manager Developers building extensions can distribute them on their own (via their own web-sites or by selling them). Visual Studio 2010 also now includes a built-in “Extension Manager” within the IDE that makes it much easier for developers to find, download, and enable extensions online. You can launch the “Extension Manager” by selecting the Tools->Extension Manager menu option: This loads an “Extension Manager” dialog which accesses an “online gallery” at Microsoft, and then populates a list of available extensions that you can optionally download and enable within your copy of Visual Studio: There are already hundreds of cool extensions populated within the online gallery. You can browse them by category (use the tree-view on the top-left to filter them). Clicking “download” on any of the extensions will download, install, and enable it. PowerCommands for Visual Studio 2010 This weekend Microsoft released the free PowerCommands for Visual Studio 2010 extension to the online gallery. You can learn more about it here, and download and install it via the “Extension Manager” above (search for PowerCommands to find it). The PowerCommands download adds dozens of useful commands to Visual Studio 2010. Below is a screen-shot of just a few of the useful commands that it adds to the Solution Explorer context menus: Below is a list of all the commands included with this weekend’s PowerCommands for Visual Studio 2010 release: Enable/Disable PowerCommands in Options dialog This feature allows you to select which commands to enable in the Visual Studio IDE. Point to the Tools menu, then click Options. Expand the PowerCommands options, then click Commands. Check the commands you would like to enable. Note: All power commands are initially defaulted Enabled. Format document on save / Remove and Sort Usings on save The Format document on save option formats the tabs, spaces, and so on of the document being saved. It is equivalent to pointing to the Edit menu, clicking Advanced, and then clicking Format Document. The Remove and sort usings option removes unused using statements and sorts the remaining using statements in the document being saved. Note: The Remove and sort usings option is only available for C# documents. Format document on save and Remove and sort usings both are initially defaulted OFF. Clear All Panes This command clears all output panes. It can be executed from the button on the toolbar of the Output window. Copy Path This command copies the full path of the currently selected item to the clipboard. It can be executed by right-clicking one of these nodes in the Solution Explorer: The solution node; A project node; Any project item node; Any folder. Email CodeSnippet To email the lines of text you select in the code editor, right-click anywhere in the editor and then click Email CodeSnippet. Insert Guid Attribute This command adds a Guid attribute to a selected class. From the code editor, right-click anywhere within the class definition, then click Insert Guid Attribute. Show All Files This command shows the hidden files in all projects displayed in the Solution Explorer when the solution node is selected. It enhances the Show All Files button, which normally shows only the hidden files in the selected project node. Undo Close This command reopens a closed document , returning the cursor to its last position. To reopen the most recently closed document, point to the Edit menu, then click Undo Close. Alternately, you can use the CtrlShiftZ shortcut. To reopen any other recently closed document, point to the View menu, click Other Windows, and then click Undo Close Window. The Undo Close window appears, typically next to the Output window. Double-click any document in the list to reopen it. Collapse Projects This command collapses a project or projects in the Solution Explorer starting from the root selected node. Collapsing a project can increase the readability of the solution. This command can be executed from three different places: solution, solution folders and project nodes respectively. Copy Class This command copies a selected class entire content to the clipboard, renaming the class. This command is normally followed by a Paste Class command, which renames the class to avoid a compilation error. It can be executed from a single project item or a project item with dependent sub items. Paste Class This command pastes a class entire content from the clipboard, renaming the class to avoid a compilation error. This command is normally preceded by a Copy Class command. It can be executed from a project or folder node. Copy References This command copies a reference or set of references to the clipboard. It can be executed from the references node, a single reference node or set of reference nodes. Paste References This command pastes a reference or set of references from the clipboard. It can be executed from different places depending on the type of project. For CSharp projects it can be executed from the references node. For Visual Basic and Website projects it can be executed from the project node. Copy As Project Reference This command copies a project as a project reference to the clipboard. It can be executed from a project node. Edit Project File This command opens the MSBuild project file for a selected project inside Visual Studio. It combines the existing Unload Project and Edit Project commands. Open Containing Folder This command opens a Windows Explorer window pointing to the physical path of a selected item. It can be executed from a project item node Open Command Prompt This command opens a Visual Studio command prompt pointing to the physical path of a selected item. It can be executed from four different places: solution, project, folder and project item nodes respectively. Unload Projects This command unloads all projects in a solution. This can be useful in MSBuild scenarios when multiple projects are being edited. This command can be executed from the solution node. Reload Projects This command reloads all unloaded projects in a solution. It can be executed from the solution node. Remove and Sort Usings This command removes and sort using statements for all classes given a project. It is useful, for example, in removing or organizing the using statements generated by a wizard. This command can be executed from a solution node or a single project node. Extract Constant This command creates a constant definition statement for a selected text. Extracting a constant effectively names a literal value, which can improve readability. This command can be executed from the code editor by right-clicking selected text. Clear Recent File List This command clears the Visual Studio recent file list. The Clear Recent File List command brings up a Clear File dialog which allows any or all recent files to be selected. Clear Recent Project List This command clears the Visual Studio recent project list. The Clear Recent Project List command brings up a Clear File dialog which allows any or all recent projects to be selected. Transform Templates This command executes a custom tool with associated text templates items. It can be executed from a DSL project node or a DSL folder node. Close All This command closes all documents. It can be executed from a document tab. How to temporarily disable extensions Extensions provide a great way to make Visual Studio even more powerful, and can help improve your overall productivity. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that extensions run within the Visual Studio process (DevEnv.exe) and so a bug within an extension can impact both the stability and performance of Visual Studio. If you ever run into a situation where things seem slower than they should, or if you crash repeatedly, please temporarily disable any installed extensions and see if that fixes the problem. You can do this for extensions that were installed via the online gallery by re-running the extension manager (using the Tools->Extension Manager menu option) and by selecting the “Installed Extensions” node on the top-left of the dialog – and then by clicking “Disable” on any of the extensions within your installed list: Hope this helps, Scott
