• Domain held at one registry, need to redirect to subdomain on my own hosting provider

  Hi, There are lots of questions around this general area, but I haven't seen one that exactly mirrors what I'd like to know. It's per the title really. My understanding (and what I'm told by my host) is the easiest thing is just to get the transfer key and bring the DNS across to my own hosting provider. Also I'm told by my host this doesn't affect the client's ownership of the domain itself. Basically, I have a subdomain setup with the site (this has the same IP address as the top level domain). So presumably just giving the other registrar that IP address will only refer it only to the TLD rather than the subdomain. What's the easiest way to achieve this? It's an asp.net site, I don't have a hosted directory on the client's account where I can code a redirect. Thanks all Mark

• Should I submit my RSS feed as Google Sitemap?

  I currently have no sitemap for a website I'm creating. I do have an RSS feed which includes the N latest updated posts on the site. It doesn't include everything on the site though, just blog posts. Creating a full sitemap would be a bit of a hassle I think. Should I submit the feed instead? Is there a difference between using a regular sitemap and a feed? Is it important to have a sitemap? What happens when you do/don't?

  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

• Why does Google Analytics log a user logging in as an exit?

  I have custom event tracking set up in Google Analytics that tracks when a visitor registers on the site. The tracking is working fine. However, GA is showing that 100% of users "exit" the site after registering. They aren't exiting however, they are just getting logged in. Is there some reason why a user creating a session by logging in would cause GA to lose track of the visitor and think a new user had arrived? Is there any way to prevent this?

• Attach a Wordpress.org blog to my BigCommerece Store as a sub-domain

  I am stuck in a peculiar situation. I have a store on BigCommerece configured with a domain from GoDaddy (mystore.com). I recently created a custom wordpress blog and hosted it on 1and1 hosting (s418783372.onlinehome.us), since bigcommerece can't host Wordpress. Now I want to use it from a sub-domain of my main-bigcommerece store (models.mystore.com), but it doesn't seem to be working since BigCommerce is the Doman Manager, but GoDaddy is the Domain-Registrar and 1and1 is the host so it doesn't control the domain. I have tried setting up a CNAME record on BigCommerece and when it didn't work asked BigCommerece about it, but they said they can't do anything about it since they aren't the domain registrar and gave me a message saying: The responsiblity to show the name in the browser on the site is up to the server or site admin.   I have googled for the answer all day and still couldn't find an answer. I have a virtual subdomain www.static.example.com which is a mirror site of www.example.com. It means I have just one root folder for subdomain and domain aswell. I want to redirect crawlers to different robots.txt file - robots_static.txt when they see .static in url in which I will forbid indexing via /disallow command. I want to do this because I have duplicated content in Google search results. Subdomain is showing the exact same content as the main domain. Does anyone know how could I achieve that crawlers sees robots_static.txt instead of robots.txt? • Why Should I Avoid Inline Scripting?

  A knowledgeable friend recently looked at a website I helped launch, and commented something like "very cool site, shame about the inline scripting in the source code". I'm definitely in a position to remove the inline scripting where it occurs; I'm vaguely aware that it's "a bad thing". My question is: what are the real problems with inline scripting? Is there a significant performance issue, or is it mostly just a matter of good style? Can I justify immediate action on the inline scripting front to my superiors, when there are other things to work on that might have a more obvious impact on the site? If you pulled up to a website, and took a peek at the source code, what factors would lead you to say "hmm, professional work here", and what would cause you to recoil from an obviously amateurish job? Okay, that question turned into multiple questions in the writing. But basically, inline scripting - what's the deal?

  I'm trying to evaluate the usefulness of Google Adwords for a friend's site. I'm trying to count the number of sales per month, and see how many have found her page because of the Adwords campaign. Her site has an online order system, but she also gets customers that buy just via the email contact and never use the online order system. There aren't many conversions per month (usually only one to three), so I don't want to miss any conversions when I want to gauge the effectiveness of a campaign. • Can't login to Ubuntu One

  I uninstalled Ubuntu One about two months ago and now I re-installed it. I can still login with my account through the site (Ubuntu One) but the client keeps telling me "The authentication failed". If I try to use the Recover password option it also fails with telling me that my email address is not recognized (while I can use it with zero issues through the site) If I attempt to create a new account from the client, it also fails to load the captcha every time. Something is clearly broken here but I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas?

I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace.   I've pages with titles like 'Alpha with Beta'. For every such page, there is an inverse page 'Beta with Alpha'. Both pages link to each other. When someone on Google searches for 'Beta with Alpha', I'd like them to land on the correct page, but sometimes 'Alpha with Beta' ranks higher (or vice versa). I was thinking of inspecting the referral link when a visitor arrives on my site, and silently redirecting them to the correct page based on what they actually searched for. Just wondering if this could be penalized by Google as 'cloaking/sneaky redirects'? Or is there a better way to ensure that the correct page on my site ranks higher for the matching query?

  I am currently in the process of redesigning a job advert site and am trying to put a lot more effort into my SEO. My question is how should I deal with the URLs that point to job adverts when the advert expires. The options I have thought of so far are: Return a 404 error and redirect to a 404 page. Will it have an effect on ranking if there are a lot of URLs that return 404s after only being up for a few weeks? Redirect to job listing page - When the user requests a URL for an advert that has expired just redirect to the main job listing page. Show the advert but tell the user to has closed - Show the advert page but with a notification that the advert has closed. The issue I see with this is that the user will visit the page, see its closed and then leave the site again which would not be good for rankings

Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. The website i've made them is in a directory like this. www.mysite.com/dev/0002 So fasthosts: Is the registrar for the domain name, it also has all of the email addresses and their current site. unlimitedwebhosting: Has the new site in a sub directory, like .com/dev/0002 Is it possible to keep the domain name and email addresses all hosted at fasthosts and to have the new website hosted in my unlimitedwebhosting account and to somehow have the domain point to the new website?

• Is it possible to track an outsourced adwords campaign?

  We have a site that is paying a 3rd party to run adwords campaigns on our behalf. They do this using their own Adwords account and so we are unable to link it to our Google Analytics account. We do have our own Adwords account for the site which is linked but the majority of campaigns are being run by this 3rd party. At the moment, in our Adwords reports (ie the Adwords section within Google Analytics) we are seeing that for the majority of visits the campaign and keyword data is not set. I am assuming that this is because even though the visit is being recognised as coming from an Adwords account, because it is not the Adwords account linked to our Analytics account, we don't get sent the campaign and keyword information. Is this correct and if so is there a way that we can start tracking this information so that we can see for ourselves how the campaigns are performing? Many thanks

• How to prevent a 404 Error when creating a subdomain and using www to access it?

  I have installed a multi-site installation of WordPress onto my domain. I then added the necessary code to the wp-config.php file and .htaccess as instructed by WordPress. I also installed a plugin called Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin which allowed me to place a 301 redirect onto the main domain as I only want to use the sub domain and not the main domain. Then I also added the following line of code to the wp-config.php file to redirect the main domain define( 'NOBLOGREDIRECT', 'URL Redirect Address' ); The site works fine with a redirect on the main domain and my subdomain runs fine when you type in subdomain.example.com or http://subdomain.example.com. However when I enter www.subdomain.example.com or http://www.subdomain.example.com the following error message is returned: Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Apache/2.4.9 (Unix) Server at www.subdomain.domain.com Port 80 Any help with this would be much appreciated.

• problem with .wax format

  I installed Ubuntu 10.4 onto a pc for an elderly woman. It was supposed to solve the problems she was having with windows, ie: she would constantly remove things, or try to fix problems herself. So I figured that Linux would solve those issues. However, what I didn't take into account was that she watches " http://www.shepherdschapel.com/broadband.htm " and when using Ubuntu, I can't seem to find a media player to make the files work. I am out of ideas. I tried kplayer, and it worked (sort of). The file that is downloaded from the site when you click the windows media player site one link is, .wax format. Which is an instruction file for windows media player. Is there anything I can do to make these videos work?

  I have website that crawls data from many third party services when user browse to webpage. This can be really slow because I hit third party server and process returned data before showing it to user. I am hosting website on Azure (shared mode). I am thinking to improve my implementation. Here is what I am thinking... Run a service that crawls data from third party services, process it and then store it in database. when user browse to my site, my site pulls data from database and display them to user. But above solution is not clear to me. Should I have normal service or wcf service? If wcf service then should website talk to database or wcf service (that can access data from database)? If normal service then how can I deploy on Azure?

  Hi, My company have a 40 sites with different domains that some of their articles appears in my main website with reference to their source. Our articles write by high level processionals in the field that they write about - we also pay them high salary. In recent google algorithm change my main site rating down very seriously. What should we do to restore company main site google rating? our solution and ideas that not working well: rel="canonical" to source website (we already have it before google change without results) meta "original-source" but not have rating influence (we already have it before google change without results) Edit:: maybe we should delete rel="canonical" from main website articles that refer to our other small websites (because this articles in main website not indexed in google)?
