• Best labeler for the server room?

  Right now, I've got a Brother P-touch labeler that prints four or five sizes of text on one long label. It has features such as italics and bold. It's...non-ideal. What do you use in your server room? I have heard of labelers that will print vertically as well as horizontally, or which can produce labels for cable management as well. I also think it would be great to be able to produce barcodes for my tapes (LTO-3). So basically, I would like a labeler that prints normal, can print cable labels, and can print barcodes. Unicorn optional. Any ideas, or could you even suggest the best labeler for each solution?

• High fan speed after return from suspend (on Ubuntu)

  Hi, I've got a HP ProBook 5310m laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit). When I return from suspend, the fan speed is usually very high: FDTZ sensor reports "90 °C". Yes, the units are wrong, since FDTZ does not report temperature, but fan speed – that's probably just a small bug in reporting. Interestingly, when I plug or unplug the power cable for a moment, the fan speed returns back to normal. My questions: Where can I report this problem? Is it about ACPI support in the kernel? What is the address of the relevant bug tracker? As a workaround for now, how can I programmatically trigger a behavior equivalent to (un)plugging the power cable. More generally, how can I force ACPI to recalculate fan speed? Ideally, I'm looking for something like echo foo > /proc/bar. Thanks in advance!

• DVI to HDMI - displaying bad.

  I currently have a computer with a ASUS EAH5770 (ATi Radeon HD 5770) 1GB GDDR5 video card, and 4GB ram, 2.6 GHZ i5 processor. I just switched from a DVI (the blue one) to an HDMI cable. (Bigben Flat cable HDMI 1.3c) I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2032 MW, which has a HDMI input. The weird thing is, that my screen is off-the-corner of the tv (so it's too wide) (1920x1080), and windows icons and text are not displaying well, though 1080p videos in YouTube are looking brilliant, just like pictures. So i think it has something to do with Windows. I already have the ATI Catalyst Control Center with the drivers i received with my video card. I do not currently know how to fix these problems. Do i have to reinstall Windows or so? Or is it (hopefully) easier?

• Sound problems in Windows 7

  hi! I hope I reached the correct forum for this question. I have a media computer with a third party audio card (Soundblaster audigy SE) I use a coaxial digital audio cable connected to a Onkyo TX SR508. if I use normal audio, the sound seems very low, I have to set volume atleast to 62 in my amplifier to hear anything, however if I set digital SPDIF I have no means of controlling the audio volume from the PC (only from the amplifier) and this can be nasty if I toggle between movies that uses Digital AC3/THX and movies wihtouth, if I look at movies capable of AC3 the volume gets VERY loud if amp is set to 62, 32 is more than enough volume when using passthrough. so this bothers me is how can I get the same amount of volume with or without digital output? I tried also other soundcards, internal red light Digital audio cable... if I connect to my television I get ok sound on any sound source via HDMI... help :)

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • How do I tell if my firewire connection is running as 400 or 800?

  I have a MacBook Pro with FireWire 800 and a freecom external harddrive that has USB3, FireWire 400 and 800. I am using a Nikkai FireWire 800 cable that has 800 connector on one end and a 400 connector on the other end. The 800 connector is attached to the MacBook pro and the 400 connector is attached to the freecom drive. Is there any way to tell what connection has been established? I looked at disk utility and it simply said 'FireWire'. Is there a command-line tool that would give more information? If it's 400, I plan to swap the cable for 800 connector at both ends.

• Sony Bravia (KDL-32EX402) audio connection fails

  Hey. I'm having trouble connecting my computers audio to the TV (Sony Bravia KDL-32EX402). I'm using a standard AUX cable (some kind of adapter for L/R to go into the headphone plug on the computer). I'm connecting the other end to the back of the TV, it doesn't actually say "AUDIO IN" but it has to be (is also right below the "HDMI 1 AUDIO IN). When changing to "PC-mode" and setting the audio input to "PC" nothing happens. (but the pictures get's transmitted fine by VGA). I have checked that it's not the PC's headphone port, nor the AUX cable. What to do, what to do ?

• Can a switch consume bandwidth?

  I have a network with a router and a switch. At first my ISP's optical fiber is connected with media converter input port. Than Ethernet cable (output port of Media converter) is connected with the switch. Then an output Ethernet cable is connected with our inner Microtik router. Then this router is connected with another LAN switch. From this switch we have got every connection other switch. It is our total network structure. Our bandwidth is 2 Mbps. From the 11th of March our MRTG graph shows high all the time even when my all switch is switched off except LAN switch. That's why our line is breaking up (Voice call). How could be it possible? My all PC's bandwidth is limited but when connected PC with media converter directly then the graph shows normal. That's why I can't blame my ISP.

• How to show disconnect network drives

  Windows 7 and Vista laptops in my company domain has network drives set up by Win2k8 Server GPO. Normally, when the laptops has ethernet cable plugged in before boot, the network drives connect and appear as expected at the end of startup sequence. However, when the laptop has ethernet cable unplugged, the network drives are not connected, which is fine, but the disconnected icons disappear as well. i.e. the drives are not set up. At the end of the startup sequence, upon reaching desktop, the wireless adapters will connect to the network and the laptop will be able to find the network drive. Hence I want the drives to be setup nonetheless, so that the next attempt to connect, say, via a desktop shortcut, will reestablish the network drive connection. How can this be done?

  CPU fan is making noise ...i figured out reasons: Cable is hitting the fan causing a vibration. And may be also CPU fan is loose causing vibration... suggest options... i cleaned the fan ...but found that there is no heatsink compound /paste between processor and the fan..is it ok ..should i apply heat sink compound. How to correct the cable vibration... My processor is p4 2.4 ghz motherboard intel 845gvsr if i have to buy new fan ..which brand should i go for ..and estimated cost ?!

• Has anyone had luck getting an external hard drive working with a PCMCIA USB card?

  I would like to know if anyone has had any success in getting and external 2.5" IDE hard drive in an external case (w/USB cable) working when plugged into a PCMCIA USB card. My hard drive doesn't work when plugged into my HT-Link Cardbus/PCMCIA USB 2.0 2-port card (NEC / 32-bit). My MP3 player will work fine when plugged into it. I tried plugging in both of the USB cables that are one one end (Y cable), and it doesn't make a difference. I read the problem may be insufficient power.

• Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

I am experiencing problems with network speeds and reliability on both wired and wireless connections. On many occasions I experience WiFi Speeds that vary between the 15mbps to 0.50 mbs (or less) and ping ranging from 15ms to 500ms. These results are from when I notice problems with internet lag and run speedtest.net to get details of problems. I have a stretched out floor-plan and old building materials drastically affecting my cellphone signal strength as well). I have not been able to find a solid plan to remedy my specific problem without buying another expensive router. I would like to get the speeds I am paying for without buying another router. (My WiFi Adapters would also need to be updated if new router is required, meaning more $$$). I can always sell the switch and get a better one that will bypass the router because my most demanding internet connections are Wired. . . Questions Can I accomplish a Modem\Switch\Router configuration with current switch? Is there a different way to get the wired speed I need while providing WiFi only when necessary? . .

• Netgear VPN can't access specific server

  I have a Netgear FVS318N configured with a VPN. I'm trying to access my call recorder with the provided software from another office. I've already setup the VPN connection, and it works. I can connect and ping the remote router and a few other things on the network. However, I can't ping or connect to my call recorder. If I move outside of the office network (i.e. connect directly to the cable modem or via a mobile hotspot), I can connect and ping the call recorder just fine. The office has a simple Linksys WRT54G router and is using AT&T Uverse. The remote location is using Charter Cable with a Netgear FVS318N. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this before? I've setup an identical VPN previously for a different client using similar hardware and never encountered this. Thanks in advance!

  In short, I am looking for a Bluetooth-3.5 mini stereo converter. What is this type of device called, and what are some of the best models (is there a difference in audio quality/lag)? I wish to connect some speakers (Altec Lansing inMotion IM7), which does not support Bluetooth, to my laptop (Lenovo X301) wirelessly. Currently, I can connect my laptop's headphone jack to the AUX jack on my speakers via a mini stereo cable. How do I replace this cable with some type of Bluetooth setup? I am not sure what this Bluetooth device is called. I thought I found something, but it actually does the opposite of what I need (3.5 mini stereo-Bluetooth).   Video card is: AMD HD 6950 My video card comes with 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, and 2xMini DV ports. I have always used VGA and DVI only. I have the HDMI already connected. I want to hook up 2 more display. One of the display can take a VGA only, the other is an LCD TV so it has VGA, HDMI, Component. I am wondering: 1) What is the best output port to use for the second two monitors? The miniDV or the DVI? 2) I need to run a long cable maybe 15-25 feet, this might change the answer to question 1, is an HDMI long cable 20+ ft going to be better than a 20ft DVI or miniDV ?

• How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

  I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

• Do 24pin motherboard wires have to be in a certain order?

  I am wanting to sleeve all the wires in my new PC. On my 24pin motherboard connection cable, I must remove the end plastic connector piece from all the wires to sleeve them all individually. I have a couple questions about this cable though. 1) When I put all the wires back into the connector, must they be in the same order they are in now? 2) I have taken a low quality iphone photo below so you cannot see to well, but in a couple spots I marked with arrows, there is actually 2 wires going into a single slot. I am not sure what to do with those, do all 24pin motherboard connectors have some slots where 2 wires go in like that?

• Are all SATA cables compatible with SATA 3?

  I have a HP Compaq de5700 Small Form Factor desktop computer, and I am looking to upgrade it's hard drive. When I open up the box, it clearly has available SATA connectors on the motherboard, but no indication as to which SATA version (1, 2, or 3). The hard drive I am considering is a SATA 3. My concern is that if the motherboard also supports SATA 3 and I use an old SATA cable (v1 or v2), might there be problems? This is a bare drive, so I don't expect that a cable will come with it, and I have not been able to find the manual for this machine. Thanks.

• DVI-D Splitter Not Working with GeForce 8400gs

  I have a GeForce 8400gs and it has a DVI and VGA port on the back. I was using dual monitors with one VGA and one DVI cable. I wanted both displays to be digital so I bought a DVI-D splitter and put one DVI cable in each monitor, connected them to the splitter and put the single merged connection in the back of the cards DVI connection. It will not recognize the second monitor (I'm not even sure how it determined which one was the first monitor). The tech specs state that it supports "Two dual-link DVI outputs for digital flat panel display resolutions up to 2560x1600" http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400_tech_specs.html. Do I need a different converter or is my only option for dual monitors with this card one VGA, one DVI?

  Thanks for looking! I have set up a desktop PC in my workshop. The Cat 5 cable connects from this PC to a wireless router which is connected to my home network. The Internet connection is working just fine. However, the "wired" network this is on shows up as a different wired network than the one that the PCs inside my house are connected to. This is a problem because I would like to connect this workshop PC to various shared resources like printers, HD Homerun (cable tv card), shared drives, etc. When I go to "Network and Sharing" and attempt to find the network that the PCs inside my home are connected to, I don't see it. • Is it safe to use an IDE to SATA power adapter for an extended period of time?

  I just bought a computer from HP and they failed to include SATA power connectors with the power supply other then the one HD and DVD drive. • Browsing is much slower on one PC wired to the same router - why?

  Wife is not happy. It takes about 5 seconds to open a google window, versus about 1 second on the faster computer which is about 3 years old itself. Yes, it is an older computer (5 -6 years old, I'd guess), surely with less RAM, but for simple browsing, should it matter? Both are hardwired to the same Netgear Rangemax router. Both use fixed IP addresses. Both are XP. Both have about 8 feet of cable to the router. I have the fastest service my cable provides. Probably irrelevant but ...two newer MACs are connected wirelessely during the summer and they are even faster, but I think that's the difference in browsers. If you could point me to a list of process of elimination steps that would be most appreciated. Thanks Dean

• How can you convert audio (3.5mm) to S/PDIF?

  I have a monitor that I want to use as my 'TV' for my gaming system. I connect it via HDMI, so sound and video go through the monitor, but I want sound to my headphones, which travels via optical (S/PDIF) cable. The monitor (Dell U2713HM) has a 3.5mm audio jack on it for line out, but I couldn't find anything that simply plugs in an converts the analog audio signal to a digital one so I can plug in a S/PDIF cable. What sort of device do I need to do this? (I am not asking for shopping recommendations, merely what options allow this conversion. I would prefer the smallest option, as space is limited).

• Can I mix CAT5 and CAT6?

  I'm thinking of upgrading the "backbone" of my network, taking a CAT6 cable from my router (DLINK DIR-655 (has cat6 ports)) to a gigabit swith in the tv rom (25m). I have two devices there that uses network (xbox and tvbox, both of them have cat5). Will my net be downgraded to 100mbit as max speed, or will I get 1 gigabit between my router and switch, and 100mbit between tvbox and xbox? From back in the days i have a tool to create my cat5 cable (the plug tool thingy), can I use this for my cat6 too?
