• C++ USB Programming

  Hi, I am new to hardware programming(especially USB) so please bear with me and my questions. I am using C++ and I need to send/receive some data (a byte array) to/from a USB port on a microprocessor board. Now, I have done some serial port programming before and I know that for a serial port you have to open a port, setup, perform i/o and finally close the port. I am guessing to use a USB port, it is not as simple as what I mentioned above. I do know that I want to use Microsoft standard drivers and implement standard Windows IO commands to accomplish this, since I believe there are no drivers for the microprocessor board for me to interact with. If somebody can point me in the right direction as to the steps needed to "talk" to a USB port (open, setup, i/o) via standard Windows IO commands, I would truly and greatly appreciate it. • Custom session state provider needed for DB storage?

  I know this question is related to many others, but please bear with me. I am trying an experiment to store all information in database tables instead of the ASP.NET session. In ASP.NET 4 one can create a custom provider for session. So, again should I implement a Custom Session-State Provider or should I just disable session (in Web.config)? Thanks! From the comments my question can be misunderstood. Hopefully this tidbit will help clarify: I don't want to store the session in the database. I want to store information in the database that you would typically store in the session. One reason why: I don't want to carry around a session on every page, especially if that page doesn't care about 90 percent of the information in the session

  I'm having a hard time giving a good description of this, but bear with me: If I have a page structed like this <h2>Chapter 1</h2> <p>Lots of text that has mutiple screen worths of content</p> <h2>Chapter 2</h2> <p>Lots of text...</p> I'd like to have "Chapter 1" absolutely positioned or whatever at the top of the page until the user scrolls down to where "Chapter 2" starts, at which point now "Chapter 2" is displayed at the top of the page. We can add wrapper classes and divs if needed. Solutions that use JQuery would be great.

• get data from gridview without querying database

  Hi there I am new at this so please bear with me... I have managed to get the following code to work...so when I click on the "select" link in each row of the gridview, the data is transfered to other label/textbox on the webpage. So far so good, the thing is that everytime I click on select...it goes and checks on the database for the data and there is a delay of a few seconds... I was hoping that the data, since it is already visible on the gridrows, is simply "picked up" and used on other labels/textboxes...without requerying the database. Is this possible ? • m and s keys do not work over vnc connection to ubuntu server

  I'm new at setting a lot of this up, so bear with me. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 server on a 64 bit machine. Then I added vnc so I could manage it while it's racked. I start the server, SSH to it, and run vncserver :1 At this point, all keys work fine. Next I exit out of the SSH session and fire up my client vnc app. I connect via the IP :1, enter my password, and everything seems to be fine. Now when I enter a terminal (through the vnc connection) I cannot type lowercase "s" or "m" (upper case works). I've tried on two different pc's running the vnc client, but it's the same. I also installed the latest updates from Ubuntu as of today. Thanks for any help.

• NUnit with an ASP.net web site

  Hi folks, I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one! I'm using JetBrains TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild. However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.net Web Site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the Web Site to a Web Application (which my boss does not like the idea of). Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could go about this? Please bear in mind that the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.

• Conditionally setting the font color of an item in a drop down box in JSF

  I'm a newbie to web programming, so please bear with me. I am using JSF 1.2 and I want to conditionally set the color of the items in my drop down list. In other words, I have a collection of items that, along with a key and a value, also have a boolean property, warning, that is dynamically set by user action. I want the drop down to show all of the items, but those whose warning property is set to true should be displayed in red. I assume I have to extend the SelectItem class to add in the boolean property. How do I then conditionally set the color of the font of those items whose warning property is set to true in my JSP pages? Thanks in advance

  I have a membership based website and im planning on implementing a referral system. My website is credit based, the idea is that if User X refers User Y, then User X gets 100 bonus credits. Has anybody built a referral system before and if so what obstacles should I bear in mind? I've had a snoop round SO tonight but couldn't find any suitable answers. My theory is to give each user a random string which is generated and stored in the DB when they sign up, The user will then be presented with a URL incl. that string which when they pass to somebody (User Z), User Z is then sent to a page, the page then uses the GET method to gather the Random string and update the DB Row they currently occupy, does this sound feasible or could it easily be breached? • Inner join 2 tables one to many 2 where clauses

  I'm a relative rookie at this,so please bear with me... I have 2 tables: OrderDetail and OrderMaster...both have a column named SalesOrder. OrderDetail table has multiple rows per unique SalesOrder. OrderMaster table has one row per unique SalesOrder. OrderDetail has a column named LineType. OrderMaster has a column named OrderStatus. I want to select all records from OrderDetail that have a LineType of "1" AND whose matching SalesOrder line in the OrderMaster table has a OrderStatus column value of "4". In plain English, orders with a Status 4 are open and ready to ship, LineType value of 1 means the Detail Line is a product code. How should this query be structured? It's going into VS 2008 (VB). I have my header file that has the api's which grant them access to the lib. now there is a debug and a release version that is talked about. how do i give these to my client? do i need to give them both folders or just the lib file along with the header file for that lib. • Do validations still fire in ASP.NET even if the controls are hidden?

  I have a form that uses ASP.NET validations. I am using some inline C# in the aspx to show/hide certain controls depending on a user's role. I would use the Visible property, but there are so many of them, I just decided to do inline C# to show and hide (I know, not best practice, but bear with me for a second). I am having an issue where Page.IsValid is always set to False when I submit my form (when certain fields are being hidden). Will the validations still fire off even if the controls are not even rendered on the pag? Also, if this is not the case, is there an effective way of breaking down Page.IsValid to find out what is setting it to False? Thanks.

  First off, please bear with me if I don't state the SQL question correctly. I have a table that has multiple columns of data. The selection criteria for my table groups based on column 1(order #). There could be multiple items on each order, but the item #'s are not grouped together. Example: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:00 140 4 123456 45 01/02/2010 08:30 270 29 123456 45 03/03/2010 09:00 140 6 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 What I need is a result like: Order Customer Order Date Order Time Item Quantity 123456 45 04/02/2010 09:30 140 10 123456 45 04/02/2010 10:00 270 35 This result shows that after all the changes the final order includes 10 of Item 140 and 35 of Item 270. I've got an iPhone 3GS that I use only for development and over the months I've accumulated 3,472 rollover minutes (my primary phone is an Android G-1). It seems a shame to let these minutes go to "waste." What cool iPhone app would you like to see that uses these minutes up in a productive, interesting, and possibly cool way. • Basics of html5 and canvas

  As I browse through different questions here, I see that there are a number of questions tagged with html5 and canvas, so I guess they sort of belong together. Now, I have absolutely no idea about the canvas (which is obviously (?) rendered in html5), but it seems that It could be useful one day in the future. So, in order to be prepared when that day comes, I'd like to know the basics about these things. I found a html snippet that is supposed to render such a canvas, but when opened in my browser (firefox) nothing is displayed. So, I guess I need a special plugin or another browser. My question: what are the absolute basic things I need to know and have in order to create a hello world thingy. Please bear in mind that I am completely new with this and don't need no fancy advanced stuff.

  Hey I have a problem with my LINQ to Entity model many to mant relation. I am new to both C# and LINQ, so bear with me. I have a model containing pictures and tags, where each picture can have many tags, and each tag can be on many pictures. In the db there is a normal relation table, but in the object model I see it as picture.tags (as a list) and tag.pictures (as a list). A search query contains several tags, and the result of the search is to contain all pictures that are tagged with all the tags (but maybe more) I have searched for. The number of tags to search for is not fixed. How can this best be done?

• No such file to load, Model/Lib naming conflict?

  I'm working on a Rails application. I have a Module called Animals. Inside this Module is a Class with the same name as one of my Models (Dog). show_animal action: def show_animal require 'Animals/Bear.rb' #Works require 'Animals/Dog.rb' #Fails end So the first require definitely works, the seconds fails. MissingSourceFile (no such file to load -- Animals/Dog.rb): I noticed that Dog.rb is the same file name as one of my models, is that what's causing this? I'm using Webrick.

• JQuery: Selecting Text in an Element (akin to highlighting with your mouse)

  I would like to have users click a link that then selects the html text in another element (NOT an input). By "select" I mean the same way you would select text by dragging your mouse over it. This has been a bear to research because everyone talks about "select" or "highlight" in other terms. Is this possible? • Is it OK to run an array with 22k strings in a PHP code on a shared web host?

  I'm new to writing code so kindly bear with me if this is a very noobish question. A couple of days back I asked a question about a PHP code that matches the the query entered by users on my website to an array stored within the PHP code and displays the matched queries. Here is the code I'm talking about Now I've ended up with a rather large list (over 22k) of strings that have to be stored in the array. Is it ok to run it like this? I'm hosting the site on a shared hostgator package, will this cause my site to crash? I don't know too much about DBs but can I somehow store this on MySQL instead of having it in the code?

• Deploying Rails app over VPN

  You'll have to bear with me as I'm not a Ruby dev, but have inherited a Ruby system. I need to deploy some changes to the app from my repository to the server. I've been instructed to run cap deploy and told that that script will get the latest code from my repository and deploy it to the server. My problem is that I have to VPN to get to the production server and the VPN client then blocks access to my local network, cutting off the repository. So my question is, how can I change my deploy.rb so that I can deploy from my local machine instead? Or is there a better way. If you need to see the deploy.rb, please let me know. Thanks Dave

  I've been writing Windows Services for a while and they always seem to work fine for things that need to run every day, few times a week, once a month, etc. but I've been lately thinking about going with Windows Workflow Foundation. However, I am unsure how would they run on a server without some container application (for instance SharePoint)? I worked with Sharepoint workflows before and I always had huge problems, at first with the bugs in the workflow architecture implementation (the problems with sleep and delay) and later when they eventually started to work, they were difficult to manage and change. On the other hand Windows Services were always quite easy to implement, easy to create a setup for them and install them and they were always quite resilient (they were often working for months without crashing or something else going wrong). What do you recommend? Please bear in mind we are working in .NET (version is of no problem, if 4.0 brings something new on this subject, we can use it).

  Hi, I want to implement pagination using JDBC. The actual thing I want to know is "How can i get first 50 and then next 50 records from database for page 1 and 2 respectively" My Query is Select * from data [data table contains 20,000 rows] For page #1 I get 50 records and for page #2 I want to get next 50 records. How can I implement it efficiently in JDBC? I have searched and found that rs.absolute(row) is the way to skip first page records but it takes some amount of time on large result sets and I don't want to bear this amount of time. Also, I don't want to use rownum and limit + offset in query because these are not good to use in query, I dont know why, still I don't want to use it in query. Can anyone help me how to get limited ResultSet for pagination or is there any way JDBC is giving us?

• increasing speed and efficiency of ajax call

  I'm not the most disciplined dev, dont know standards and am self-taught so bear with me. I create stuff very logically and fast but not always using 'programming standards'. I have a mobile app using geolocation API. it gets thousands of places from my db and makes gmaps v3 markers for the ones around the user's current location. there is an ajax call from my JS to an aspx page that calls the database, makes a json string, and sends the json string to the javascript that then creates the google map markers. would i save time if the json string was in a flat file? im not sure if, generally speaking, accessing a sql db from an aspx page is faster than c# file i/o on a flat file with pre-rendered JSON. (of course, using the flat file, it would update everytime the db is updated)
