• ATI radeon hd 5450 Graphics Card Issues

  I have an Old Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with an Intel Core 2 Processor (windows 7). Now This can hold a PCI-E x16 port. Now I got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 low profile. I plugged and played and it fits without a hitch, the software installed too! , now for the graphics well... It doesn't really work at all as it seems to freeze at the moment that it loads on the windows logo. It loads into safe mode so I'm not really sure what the problem is. Any ideas, I read the dell forums and they should be somewhat compatible... with the specs so I'm at a loss here. and I am a novice here. Ideas? Edit I have tried to reset the cmos,no luck there. I have tried to move the ram as well. nothing big happened.

• How can I chainload a USB drive from GRUB2?

  I'm using GNU GRUB version 1.99-12ubuntu5, booted over the network using PXE. I used grub-mknetdir to generate the GRUB image and directory tree, which I'm serving on a TFTP server using Tftpd32 in Windows. I've put the latest version of Clonezilla on my USB drive using Tuxboot. Right now, in GRUB's CLI, using ls lists only the (pxe) device, even if the USB drive is plugged in before the computer is on. Is there any way I can chainload Clonezilla on my USB from GRUB, which is booted over the network?

• Battery management of a Macbook

  I bought a Macbook Pro last week. I mostly use (and plan to use) it like a desktop with an external monitor. I use the system at least 15 hours a day. Now using the coconut battery application, I figured out that the capacity has the current capacity has reduced to 98% of the design capacity. I was wondering what is the best way to manage battery. Should it be always either charging or discharging Should it be plugged in all time. I barely get 2 hours and 30 minutes on battery. Is that normal? I run XCode, VMWare Fusion (for Visual Studio), Mail app, Chrome (5-10 tabs) and Itunes (mp3). The brightness is 60% on battery. I already did the calibration.

• Connecting a network drive only when the VPN is connected?

  I have a thumb drive that I want to be able to connect to the same place over the network at one location as it is locally. Sometimes I leave it at the other location, but usually if I'm going to back it up, I back it up locally for network traffic. Is there a way to automatically connect the thumb drive when I connect to the VPN? (Always to the same drive letter...and obviously skip connecting it if it's already plugged in locally and the VPN is connected...) I'm using a Cisco VPN Client 5.x

• Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

  I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

• Configuring a Genius GW-7200 Access Point

  I came across an access point we had a few years ago. I'm now trying to get it set up to work on our network. here are a couple of pictures: http://twitpic.com/194u06/full http://twitpic.com/194u0v/full I have plugged this into our network via the network port on the back. I set up a DHCP reservation, based on the MAC address on the back of the access point, however I cannot ping it, nor access the web interface. I've held down the reset button for 10 seconds, to see if that would do anything. Google doesn't come up with anything on the matter :-(

• Sound stopped working on Toshiba Satelite C855

  I have a Toshiba Satallite C855 running Windows 7 with a Realtek High Definition Audio card. Sound worked fine yesterday. Today, my two-year old did something to the machine, and I have no sound. I have adjusted sound through the icon in the lower right corner, and using the Fn keys. I have rebooted. I've verified that there are no external speakers plugged in to the laptop. It seems that this model does not have an external volume control. (If it does I can't find it.) Any ideas?

• Printing from a Linux using an Acer Aspire Netbook

  A friend asked me to check why their Linux Acer Aspire netbook can't print to their HP printer. When I plugged in the USB cable, the a "balloon" popped up on the netbook saying it was installing the printer. But the printing does not work. I was able to get into a Settings area and click on Print Test Page but nothing happened. If it was Ubuntu, I would go into the Log File Viewer, but I couldn't find that on whatever Linux flavor the Acer is running. I couldn't even figure out how to get to a terminal (shell) window. I tried searching the HP and Acer sites but nothing seems to apply to this issue.

• Linux how to force an external ping from eth0 to eth1 without a router.

  Hello, i am trying to have eth0 connected to eth1 on the same machine with a loopback cable. I have eth0 as 2.2.2.1 and eth1 as 2.2.2.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0 and the right Bcast 2.2.2.255 . I tried to ping -I eth0 2.2.2.2 and ping -I eth1 2.2.2.1. My issue is that even when the loopback cable is not plugged the ping still succeed( as if it is an internal ping). How can I force an external ping where I make sure the packets are going through the connected cable? ( I know I can have a router and both ethernets connected to it, but I am avoiding to use anything besides a simple cat 5 cable). Thanks.

• How to prevent laptop screen brightness from changing when un/plugging battery power

  When I am using my laptop, I continually adjust the screen's brightness based on the lighting conditions in the room (e.g. how much light is coming in from windows, etc.). But if I unplug the laptop or plug it back in, Windows looks at the default brightness setting in the power profile for "on battery" or "plugged in" and changes the brightness accordingly. This is a jarring experience and then I have to hunt down the ideal brightness for my current situation again, rather than getting on with my work. I would like to make it so that plugging or unplugging the battery is not a trigger that adjusts the screen brightness at all. The screen brightness should only change when I adjust it myself. Does anybody know how this might be accomplished?

• Unable to mount portable hard drive on Ubuntu

  My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. There's one NTFS partition spanning the whole drive. When I plug the disk in, I see the following in dmesg: [269259.504631] usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20 [269259.604674] usb 1-2.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice However it does not mount in GNOME and I don't see it when I type: sudo fdisk -l Any suggestions why this might be? I repaired the partition using chkdsk on Windows, so the issue is probably not filesystem related.

• External Hardrive Not Reconized on Windows 7 at all

  I Have a NextStar 2/5" from Vantec and its an 80G HD. I have used it many times on windows xp and it works fine. We just recently upgraded to windows 7 home premium and when I plug it in it beeps many times. I've tried all the USB plugs in my computer and its not those plugs. Haven't tried eSata because it uses a weird cable to plug into. People told me that when it beeps everything is corrupted, but works fine on xp. I tried installing the drivers online from their website and when I try it asks me to put in a cd which makes no sense because they are online drivers. When I go into device manager nothing comes up, it just acts like the HD is invisible. The beeping will stop eventually as it is plugged in, but with no result.

• Recover Intel Matrix Raid Configuration

  Hello, I had 2 HDDs in Intel Matrix Raid configuration on a motherboard with intel ICH9R. I had some RAID 0 partitions and one RAID 1 partition. Somehow when replacing my videocard I partially unpulugged the power connector from one of the HDD. I booted and only one disk was showing. So I turned off the PC and correctly plugged the power connector and how both HDDs are showing as "Non-Raid Disk" Is there a way to restore the raid configuration from before ? In fact I don't really remember how my partitions where configured, I had 2x100Gb + 1x296Gb in RAID 0 and one 50Gb in RAID 1 (using 2x320Gb HDDs) but I'm not sure how many volumes and how the partitions where allocated on the volumes. Is there a tool to find that ? Thanks

• Connected 2 routers, but they won't talk

  I'm trying to set up a second WLAN at home (since the Nintendo DS firmware won't connect to my WPA-encrypted main WLAN), but when I connect my second router's WAN port to one of my main router's LAN ports, the routers won't talk, and I can't connect wirelessly to the second router. I can still see the second router's WLAN - I am just unable to connect to it. And it seems that even the main router can't see the second router, despite being plugged directly into it - I went to the main router's admin console and pinged the second router (which is receiving an IP address), but it was unable to reach it! Does anyone know what might be wrong? Thanks!

  On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... This server is used almost exclusively for inbound connections. It hosts a web server (IIS 6), SQL server, and file server (via LAN UNC paths and mapped drives). How do I make best use of inbound bandwidth across both NICs? For example, if I connect to it by hostname and one of the interfaces has high traffic, I'd like the new connection to use the other interface.

  We have a Cisco PIX 515 firewall and I would like to set up a simple logging that would give us a traffic breakdown for billing by: source destination protocol port size time PIX is plugged into Catalyst 2970 and I was told that the best thing since sliced bread for logging is to get Netflow and get Catalyst to log. My concern, however, (besides the Netflow cost) is that I really don't want to "listen" to the internal noise and all I'm interested in are the external traffic stats above for billing and analysis purposes. • Is proprietary vendor software required to use a wireless printer?

  On Windows Vista, other than the driver, one can use a regular printer w/o any extra software, either plugged in via USB or over the network. I don't have to install extra software from the printer vendor to use the basic printer functionality. Is the same true for wireless printers? I need to install the HP 6000 wireless printer, and I hate installing vendor software other than the required drivers. So I'm wondering whether I need to install HP software on every PC that wants to use this printer? I haven't had a chance to read the manual but I'm hoping I don't have to. Can folks that have experience with wireless printers comment on whether vendor software, other than the printer driver, is required to use a wireless printer?

  I have formatted Canyon CN-MP4A USB flash drive with Disk Utility on Mac and now it is not recognized on any Mac or Windows machine. I have formatted with Disk Utility > drive > Erease > Format > MS-DOS (FAT). Now when I plug it in any Mac or Windows machine, nothing happens. Like nothing is plugged in. It has a screen, and I was able to format it directly from the device before, but now when I turn it on, welcome screen appears, but nothing else. I can not get to the menu. Is there a way I can format it? I am looking for the answer on the internet, but no luck so far.

  How to get my information off my old hard drive to my new one So I wanna know can anyone help me Laptop stop working and have me a hard disk error I finally got it to boot up again after playing with it, and I tried to copy my stuff and it froze on me and hasn't booted since Bought another hard drive and ended up making an image of my friends computer but couldn't get my stuff off my old drive so I tried the freezer method now and I put it in for two hours and it didn't boot but I'm putting it back in for 12hrs So my end result is I just wanna get my drive up enough to create an image of my CPU to my new hard drive and is there another way I could do it if my hard drive won't boot!! But here's the kickers when I made the image of my friends computerized up loaded it to the new hard drive and I have my old hard drive plugged up to an USB enclosure so I need help. But basically, what happens is on my MacBook (latest model) whenever I 'flip' a Dashboard Widget I hear a little noise for the duration of the flip: like a tiny continuous squeak noise. It's quite strange. However, it only ever happens when the MagSafe cable is plugged in. WHY?! :'( The noise appears to me emitted from the MagSafe area itself, but, there's not any other CoreAnimation or Quartzey bits that cause this to happen, it only happens with Dashboard widgets... The noise is very quiet and you can only hear it in a silent room. Edit: Running the latest Snow Leopard.

• Compaq Presario CQ40 unexpected turn off

  My Compaq Presario CQ40 (yeah, its pretty old) suddenly turns off after about 1/2 - 1 hour usage without any notice or warning. The power cable and adapter works fine (indicator bulbs show that power is given to the laptop), but it seems like machine suddenly plugged off from the power source. And when I try to switch it on, after the sudden turn off it simply won't turn on. I can only turn it on after letting it to rest for at least couple of hours! ** The battery has been dead for some time now, but it has been working fine on direct power supply until recently. Has anyone encountered this? and hopefully knows any cure?

  I have a TG585v7 as a router with several machines plugged into it. In the default setup, the packets are only delivered to the specific machine but I want to be able to setup to monitor all network traffic on one of the machines, i.e. I need those packets to be picked up when my ethernet card is in promiscuous mode. Is this possible? Guide here has this "mcastpromisc Make the IP interface multicast promiscuous. OPTIONAL", is this what I am looking for? Does it mean I need to manually add all my machines by their MAC addresses to be able to receive packets destined for them? Or am I out of luck and I need to get a better router?

• How to convert laptop drive for use as VMware image?

  I have a windows laptop that recently died (dead motherboard). It being a 7 year old laptop, I decided to give Apple a try this time around and try to use VMware to access my old data if necessary. In order to do this, I need to convert the physical drive to a VMware image. Googling around, it looks like I might be able to use VMware Convertor to do this. My original intent was to plug the laptop drive into a windows desktop via an external USB enclosure and create the image that way. However, upon further investigation, it looks like VMware Converter only supports converting a local machine (the desktop) or a remote machine (via IP) but not a laptop drive plugged into the local machine. So with that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions and help on how to convert this laptop drive into something I can use on my new Macbook Pro.
