• Package linux-headers-3.7.0-999 is not installed

  When trying to install the three amd64 debs for the 3.7.0 kernel from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2012-10-22-quantal/ I get this error: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic: linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic depends on linux-headers-3.7.0-999; however: Package linux-headers-3.7.0-999 is not installed. It installs and works correctly but leaves me with broken packages in Synaptic. Is this just a bug with how Ubuntu is packaging these latest debs? Or am I doing something wrong?

  What if I want to also decouple my application, from classes like Product or User? (which usually have more than one instance) Take a look at this example: class Controller { public function someAction() { $product_1 = new Product(); $product_2 = new Product(); // do something with the products } } Is it right to say that Controller now depends on Product? I was thinking that we could decouple them too (as we would with single-instance objects like Database) In this example, however ugly, they are decoupled: class Controller { public function someAction(ProductInterface $new_product) { $product_1 = clone $new_product; $product_2 = clone $new_product; // do something with the products } } Has anyone done something like this before? • Is committing/checking code everyday a good practice?

  I've been reading Martin Fowler's note on Continuous Integration and he lists as a must "Everyone Commits To the Mainline Every Day". I do not like to commit code unless the section I'm working on is complete and that in practice I commit my code every three days: one day to investigate/reproduce the task and make some preliminary changes, a second day to complete the changes, and a third day to write the tests and clean it up^ for submission. I would not feel comfortable submitting the code sooner. Now, I pull changes from the repository and integrate them locally usually twice a day, but I do not commit that often unless I can carve out a smaller piece of work. Question: is committing everyday such a good practice that I should change my workflow to accomodate it, or it is not that advisable? ^ The order is more arbitrary and depends on the task, my point was to illustrate the time span and activities, not the exact sequence.

  So I tried to install wine 1.5 a few times, I got 1.4 installed, and 1.6 installed oddly enough, I completely removed and purged all wine and still nothing. I installed ia32-lib and still nothing, tried installing from synaptic, ubuntu software center, and apt-get method. I get this error from apt-get in the terminal Reading package lists... • Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

  I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update. Example from PHP: If I'm building an application using Zend framework, should I treat Zend framework libraries as third party code? Example from C#: If I'm building a desktop application, should I treat all .Net classes as third party code? Example from Java: Should I treat all libraries in the JDK as third party libraries? Some people say that if a library is stable and won't change often then one doesn't need to wrap it. However I fail to see how one would test a class that depends on a third party code without wrapping it.

• Formalizing programmers errors

  Every one of us make errors leading to bugs. Once I wanted to start logging my errors for future analysis, probably mentioning project title, approximate time spent and the most important, the type of error. For example when I copy-pasted a fragment about 'x' and replaced every occurrence of 'x' with 'y' and forgot to replace a tiny piece, this goes to 'copy-paste error'. The usefulness of this approach depends on whether I can formalize my errors at all and probably minimizing the number of types to choose from. Otherwise I would start postponing, ignoring and so on so make this system useless. Are there existing research in this area, probably a known minimum set of errors? Maybe some of you already tried to implement something like this and succeeded/failed?

• How to upgrade a particular package dependencies only?

  Let's say I have a package A which has Depends: B (>= 1.0.0) in its control file. The B was installed as an A dependency some time ago with 1.0.0 version. Now B was updated in the repository to the 1.0.42 version and I'd like to upgrade it. What I don't like to do: apt-get install B since it will mark B as "manually installed" (not sure how to name it correctly) package and it won't be removed with autoremove if I decide to stop using A ever. So is there an analogue of apt-get upgrade that only upgrades a particular package and its dependencies (probably recursive, it doesn't matter in my case since B doesn't depend on anything else) only?

  I want to make a game that depends on the phone orientation (changing shoot direction with tilt), however I need to test this on PC. So is there any tool I can use to simulate the orientation of the phone with mouse or keyboard of my PC? Something like joysticks on the screen. Thanks for any help! • Cannot install ia32-libs on a 64 bit Ubuntu installation

  I am using a 64-bit installation of Oneiric. I need to install the ia32-libs package to get some applications (evince, adobe reader) to work. For example, adobe reader is giving the following error: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. However, I am not able to install it since it is showing a dependency on ia32-libs-multiarch, which in turn is showing a dependency on gstreamer0.10-plugins-good:i386. This in turn depends on few other packages. How can I install these packages safely and still meet all the dependencies.

• How to estimate tasks in scrum?

  Let's say we have a backlog of User Stories, each with an estimated number of Story Points, and now we're doing the Sprint Planning. Now, the Stories should be broken down into tasks and many Scrum resources suggest that each task should be estimated in person-hours. Since all questions have been discussed by the team at this point, estimating a task should not take longer than a minute. However, since a task should not be longer than a day, assuming a three week sprint with 8 developers means 120 tasks, and taking two hours only for estimations seems to be a bit much to me. I know that experienced teams can skip or short-cut task estimations, but let's say we're not at that stage yet. In your experience, how many tasks are there in a sprint* and how long should it take to estimate all of them? (Estimating only half of them doesn't make much sense, does it?) (*) I know that depends on sprint length and team size, so let's assume 8 developers and three weeks.

  There is the classic OOP problem of method chaining vs "single-access-point" methods: main.getA().getB().getC().transmogrify(x, y) vs main.getA().transmogrifyMyC(x, y) The first seems to have the advantage that each class is only responsible for a smaller set of operations, and makes everything a lot more modular - adding a method to C doesn't require any effort in A, B or C to expose it. The downside, of course, is weaker encapsulation, which the second code solves. Now A has control of every method that passes through it, and can delegate it to its fields if it wants to. I realize there's no single solution and it of course depends on context, but I would really like to hear some input about other important differences between the two styles, and under what circumstances should I prefer either of them - because right now, when I try to design some code, I feel like I'm just not using the arguments to decide one way or the other.

  This is a genuine question motivated by Ideal Operating System When I moved from DOS to Linux in the late 90s it was an eye opener for me. Long file names, arbitrarily many extensions etc... Now I look at Linux and Unix and see all sorts of issues. Here are things I see which could be fixed. Too much depends on root, and rootly powers cannot be voluntarily delegated over several users. (I would love to give up my power to manager printers and delegate the job to another account) File permissions are very limited, and there is not much metadata to go with files. The "everything is a file" metaphor is not true, Plan 9 gets it right(er).

  I've just upgraded to Quantal Quetzal on my home computer and discovered that the program K3dSurf has been removed from the repositories. (Presumably since it doesn't seem to be in active development and still depends on qt3 libraries.) Does anyone know of a similar program (user-friendly and versatile) for drawing 3D surfaces? This has been a mission-critical program for me when teaching multivariable calculus, so I won't be able to upgrade at work unless I can find a replacement. (Yes, I could install directly from the program's website, but dealing with obsolete libraries sounds like a giant headache.)

Or, are they looking for Javascript people only? It probably depends on the company, but what is the general advice for a student wanting to do some front end work? Is Javascript more powerful than JQuery? I know Jquery is a library and simplifies many tasks, but is there some reason why you would use Javascript over Jquery?

• Switching windows behavior in Ubuntu

  Ubuntu supports a shortcut to switch windows Ctrl+Tab, but it allows you to move through apps in one direction only. Direction depends on whether initially Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab was pressed. Ctrl+Tab will move forwards, but pressing Shift while moving forward doesn't change the direction, it still goes forwards unlike Windows default behaviour. Ctrl+Shift+Tab will move backwards, but if Shift is released while moving backwards the menu will disappear. Is there a way to configure Ubuntu so that you could go backwards and forwards without running the menu twice?

  I was asked today about how much data an average Retail Link analyst (Walmart vendor) would consume.  I thought I would write this small post for future reference. Of course this vastly depends on the amount of skus, how long you want to archive data, and if you want store level sales. Most reports take up very little space. Most times when you download a report (total sales per sku for last week), you will overwrite the previous week’s report.  However, most users will take the data inside their downloaded report, and add it to a database or larger excel spreadsheet.  This way, the user has a history of the sales of each item/sku per week over the last 2+ years.  I would estimate 1 user to consume around 1-2 gb of space, at most, over the course of 2 years. If you start archiving store level sales those numbers can drastically increase up to 10gb or more very quickly.
