  • First round playing with Memcached

    - by Shaun
    To be honest I have not been very interested in the caching before I’m going to a project which would be using the multi-site deployment and high connection and concurrency and very sensitive to the user experience. That means we must cache the output data for better performance. After looked for the Internet I finally focused on the Memcached. What’s the Memcached? I think the description on its main site gives us a very good and simple explanation. Free & open source, high-performance, distributed memory object caching system, generic in nature, but intended for use in speeding up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. Memcached is an in-memory key-value store for small chunks of arbitrary data (strings, objects) from results of database calls, API calls, or page rendering. Memcached is simple yet powerful. Its simple design promotes quick deployment, ease of development, and solves many problems facing large data caches. Its API is available for most popular languages. The original Memcached was built on *nix system are is being widely used in the PHP world. Although it’s not a problem to use the Memcached installed on *nix system there are some windows version available fortunately. Since we are WISC (Windows – IIS – SQL Server – C#, which on the opposite of LAMP) it would be much easier for us to use the Memcached on Windows rather than *nix. I’m using the Memcached Win X64 version provided by NorthScale. There are also the x86 version and other operation system version.   Install Memcached Unpack the Memcached file to a folder on the machine you want it to be installed, we can see that there are only 3 files and the main file should be the “memcached.exe”. Memcached would be run on the server as a service. To install the service just open a command windows and navigate to the folder which contains the “memcached.exe”, let’s say “C:\Memcached\”, and then type “memcached.exe -d install”. If you are using Windows Vista and Windows 7 system please be execute the command through the administrator role. Right-click the command item in the start menu and use “Run as Administrator”, otherwise the Memcached would not be able to be installed successfully. Once installed successful we can type “memcached.exe -d start” to launch the service. Now it’s ready to be used. The default port of Memcached is 11211 but you can change it through the command argument. You can find the help by typing “memcached -h”.   Using Memcached Memcahed has many good and ready-to-use providers for vary program language. After compared and reviewed I chose the Memcached Providers. It’s built based on another 3rd party Memcached client named enyim.com Memcached Client. The Memcached Providers is very simple to set/get the cached objects through the Memcached servers and easy to be configured through the application configuration file (aka web.config and app.config). Let’s create a console application for the demonstration and add the 3 DLL files from the package of the Memcached Providers to the project reference. Then we need to add the configuration for the Memcached server. Create an App.config file and firstly add the section on top of it. Here we need three sections: the section for Memcached Providers, for enyim.com Memcached client and the log4net. 1: <configSections> 2: <section name="cacheProvider" 3: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.CacheProviderSection, MemcachedProviders" 4: allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" 5: restartOnExternalChanges="true"/> 6: <sectionGroup name="enyim.com"> 7: <section name="memcached" 8: type="Enyim.Caching.Configuration.MemcachedClientSection, Enyim.Caching"/> 9: </sectionGroup> 10: <section name="log4net" 11: type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net"/> 12: </configSections> Then we will add the configuration for 3 of them in the App.config file. The Memcached server information would be defined under the enyim.com section since it will be responsible for connect to the Memcached server. Assuming I installed the Memcached on two servers with the default port, the configuration would be like this. 1: <enyim.com> 2: <memcached> 3: <servers> 4: <!-- put your own server(s) here--> 5: <add address="192.168.0.149" port="11211"/> 6: <add address="10.10.20.67" port="11211"/> 7: </servers> 8: <socketPool minPoolSize="10" maxPoolSize="100" connectionTimeout="00:00:10" deadTimeout="00:02:00"/> 9: </memcached> 10: </enyim.com> Memcached supports the multi-deployment which means you can install the Memcached on the servers as many as you need. The protocol of the Memcached responsible for routing the cached objects into the proper server. So it’s very easy to scale-out your system by Memcached. And then define the Memcached Providers configuration. The defaultExpireTime indicates how long the objected cached in the Memcached would be expired, the default value is 2000 ms. 1: <cacheProvider defaultProvider="MemcachedCacheProvider"> 2: <providers> 3: <add name="MemcachedCacheProvider" 4: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.MemcachedCacheProvider, MemcachedProviders" 5: keySuffix="_MySuffix_" 6: defaultExpireTime="2000"/> 7: </providers> 8: </cacheProvider> The last configuration would be the log4net. 1: <log4net> 2: <!-- Define some output appenders --> 3: <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender"> 4: <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> 5: <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline"/> 6: </layout> 7: </appender> 8: <!--<threshold value="OFF" />--> 9: <!-- Setup the root category, add the appenders and set the default priority --> 10: <root> 11: <priority value="WARN"/> 12: <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"> 13: <filter type="log4net.Filter.LevelRangeFilter"> 14: <levelMin value="WARN"/> 15: <levelMax value="FATAL"/> 16: </filter> 17: </appender-ref> 18: </root> 19: </log4net>   Get, Set and Remove the Cached Objects Once we finished the configuration it would be very simple to consume the Memcached servers. The Memcached Providers gives us a static class named DistCache that can be used to operate the Memcached servers. Get<T>: Retrieve the cached object from the Memcached servers. If failed it will return null or the default value. Add: Add an object with a unique key into the Memcached servers. Assuming that we have an operation that retrieve the email from the name which is time consuming. This is the operation that should be cached. The method would be like this. I utilized Thread.Sleep to simulate the long-time operation. 1: static string GetEmailByNameSlowly(string name) 2: { 3: Thread.Sleep(2000); 4: return name + "@ethos.com.cn"; 5: } Then in the real retrieving method we will firstly check whether the name, email information had been searched previously and cached. If yes we will just return them from the Memcached, otherwise we will invoke the slowly method to retrieve it and then cached. 1: static string GetEmailByName(string name) 2: { 3: var email = DistCache.Get<string>(name); 4: if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(email)) 5: { 6: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email not be in memcached so need slow loading. (name = {0})==>", name); 7: email = GetEmailByNameSlowly(name); 8: DistCache.Add(name, email); 9: } 10: else 11: { 12: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email had been in memcached. (name = {0})==>", name); 13: } 14: return email; 15: } Finally let’s finished the calling method and execute. 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: var name = string.Empty; 4: while (name != "q") 5: { 6: Console.Write("==> Please enter the name to find the email: "); 7: name = Console.ReadLine(); 8:  9: var email = GetEmailByName(name); 10: Console.WriteLine("==> The email of {0} is {1}.", name, email); 11: } 12: } The first time I entered “ziyanxu” it takes about 2 seconds to get the email since there’s nothing cached. But the next time I entered “ziyanxu” it returned very quickly from the Memcached.   Summary In this post I explained a bit on why we need cache, what’s Memcached and how to use it through the C# application. The example is fairly simple but hopefully demonstrated on how to use it. Memcached is very easy and simple to be used since it gives you the full opportunity to consider what, when and how to cache the objects. And when using Memcached you don’t need to consider the cache servers. The Memcached would be like a huge object pool in front of you. The next step I’m thinking now are: What kind of data should be cached? And how to determined the key? How to implement the cache as a layer on top of the business layer so that the application will not notice that the cache is there. How to implement the cache by AOP so that the business logic no need to consider the cache. I will investigate on them in the future and will share my thoughts and results.   Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • How to Configure Windows Machine to Allow File Sharing with DNS Alias

    - by Michael Ferrante
    I have not seen a single article posted anywhere online that brings together all the settings one would need to do to make this work properly on Windows, so I thought I would post it here. To facilitate failover schemes, a common technique is to use DNS CNAME records (DNS Aliases) for different machine roles. Then instead of changing the Windows computername of the actual machine name, one can switch a DNS record to point to a new host. This can work on Microsoft Windows machines, but to make it work with file sharing the following configuration steps need to be taken. Outline The Problem The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) References 1. The Problem On Windows machines, file sharing can work via the computer name, with or without full qualification, or by the IP Address. By default, however, filesharing will not work with arbitrary DNS aliases. To enable filesharing and other Windows services to work with DNS aliases, you must make registry changes as detailed below and reboot the machine. 2. The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) This change alone will allow other machines on the network to connect to the machine using any arbitrary hostname. (However this change will not allow a machine to connect to itself via a hostname, see BackConnectionHostNames below). Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value DisableStrictNameChecking of type DWORD set to 1. Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) This change is necessary for a DNS alias to work with filesharing from a machine to find itself. This creates the Local Security Authority host names that can be referenced in an NTLM authentication request. To do this, follow these steps for all the nodes on the client computer: To the registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0, add new Multi-String Value BackConnectionHostNames In the Value data box, type the CNAME or the DNS alias, that is used for the local shares on the computer, and then click OK. Note: Type each host name on a separate line. Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Allows ability to see the network alias in the network browse list. Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value OptionalNames of type Multi-String Add in a newline delimited list of names that should be registered under the NetBIOS browse entries Names should match NetBIOS conventions (i.e. not FQDN, just hostname) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) NOTE: Should not need to do this for basic functions to work, documented here for completeness. We had one situation in which the DNS alias was not working because there was an old SPN record interfering, so if other steps aren't working check if there are any stray SPN records. You must register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs), the host name, and the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) for all the new DNS alias (CNAME) records. If you do not do this, a Kerberos ticket request for a DNS alias (CNAME) record may fail and return the error code KDC_ERR_S_SPRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN. To view the Kerberos SPNs for the new DNS alias records, use the Setspn command-line tool (setspn.exe). The Setspn tool is included in Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. You can install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools from the Support\Tools folder of the Windows Server 2003 startup disk. How to use the tool to list all records for a computername: setspn -L computername To register the SPN for the DNS alias (CNAME) records, use the Setspn tool with the following syntax: setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name computername setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name.company.com computername 3. • "Content is not allowed in prolog" when parsing perfectly valid XML on GAE

    - by Adrian Petrescu
    Hey guys, I've been beating my head against this absolutely infuriating bug for the last 48 hours, so I thought I'd finally throw in the towel and try asking here before I throw my laptop out the window. I'm trying to parse the response XML from a call I made to AWS SimpleDB. The response is coming back on the wire just fine; for example, it may look like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ListDomainsResponse xmlns="http://sdb.amazonaws.com/doc/2009-04-15/"> <ListDomainsResult> <DomainName>Audio</DomainName> <DomainName>Course</DomainName> <DomainName>DocumentContents</DomainName> <DomainName>LectureSet</DomainName> <DomainName>MetaData</DomainName> <DomainName>Professors</DomainName> <DomainName>Tag</DomainName> </ListDomainsResult> <ResponseMetadata> <RequestId>42330b4a-e134-6aec-e62a-5869ac2b4575</RequestId> <BoxUsage>0.0000071759</BoxUsage> </ResponseMetadata> </ListDomainsResponse> I pass in this XML to a parser with XMLEventReader eventReader = xmlInputFactory.createXMLEventReader(response.getContent()); and call eventReader.nextEvent(); a bunch of times to get the data I want. Here's the bizarre part -- it works great inside the local server. The response comes in, I parse it, everyone's happy. The problem is that when I deploy the code to Google App Engine, the outgoing request still works, and the response XML seems 100% identical and correct to me, but the response fails to parse with the following exception: com.amazonaws.http.HttpClient handleResponse: Unable to unmarshall response (ParseError at [row,col]:[1,1] Message: Content is not allowed in prolog.): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ListDomainsResponse xmlns="http://sdb.amazonaws.com/doc/2009-04-15/"><ListDomainsResult><DomainName>Audio</DomainName><DomainName>Course</DomainName><DomainName>DocumentContents</DomainName><DomainName>LectureSet</DomainName><DomainName>MetaData</DomainName><DomainName>Professors</DomainName><DomainName>Tag</DomainName></ListDomainsResult><ResponseMetadata><RequestId>42330b4a-e134-6aec-e62a-5869ac2b4575</RequestId><BoxUsage>0.0000071759</BoxUsage></ResponseMetadata></ListDomainsResponse> javax.xml.stream.XMLStreamException: ParseError at [row,col]:[1,1] Message: Content is not allowed in prolog. at com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.impl.XMLStreamReaderImpl.next(Unknown Source) at com.sun.xml.internal.stream.XMLEventReaderImpl.nextEvent(Unknown Source) at com.amazonaws.transform.StaxUnmarshallerContext.nextEvent(StaxUnmarshallerContext.java:153) ... (rest of lines omitted) I have double, triple, quadruple checked this XML for 'invisible characters' or non-UTF8 encoded characters, etc. I looked at it byte-by-byte in an array for byte-order-marks or something of that nature. Nothing; it passes every validation test I could throw at it. Even stranger, it happens if I use a Saxon-based parser as well -- but ONLY on GAE, it always works fine in my local environment. It makes it very hard to trace the code for problems when I can only run the debugger on an environment that works perfectly (I haven't found any good way to remotely debug on GAE). Nevertheless, using the primitive means I have, I've tried a million approaches including: XML with and without the prolog With and without newlines With and without the "encoding=" attribute in the prolog Both newline styles With and without the chunking information present in the HTTP stream And I've tried most of these in multiple combinations where it made sense they would interact -- nothing! I'm at my wit's end. Has anyone seen an issue like this before that can hopefully shed some light on it? Thanks!

  • TwoWay Binding With ItemsControl

    - by Andrew
    I'm trying to write a user control that has an ItemsControl, the ItemsTemplate of which contains a TextBox that will allow for TwoWay binding. However, I must be making a mistake somewhere in my code, because the binding only appears to work as if Mode=OneWay. This is a pretty simplified excerpt from my project, but it still contains the problem: <UserControl x:Class="ItemsControlTest.UserControl1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Height="300" Width="300"> <Grid> <StackPanel> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Path=.}" x:Name="myItemsControl"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBox Text="{Binding Mode=TwoWay, UpdateSourceTrigger=LostFocus, Path=.}" /> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> <Button Click="Button_Click" Content="Click Here To Change Focus From ItemsControl" /> </StackPanel> </Grid> </UserControl> Here's the code behind for the above control: using System; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Collections.ObjectModel; namespace ItemsControlTest { /// <summary> /// Interaction logic for UserControl1.xaml /// </summary> public partial class UserControl1 : UserControl { public ObservableCollection<string> MyCollection { get { return (ObservableCollection<string>)GetValue(MyCollectionProperty); } set { SetValue(MyCollectionProperty, value); } } // Using a DependencyProperty as the backing store for MyCollection. This enables animation, styling, binding, etc... public static readonly DependencyProperty MyCollectionProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("MyCollection", typeof(ObservableCollection<string>), typeof(UserControl1), new UIPropertyMetadata(new ObservableCollection<string>())); public UserControl1() { for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++) MyCollection.Add("String " + i.ToString()); InitializeComponent(); myItemsControl.DataContext = this.MyCollection; } private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { // Insert a string after the third element of MyCollection MyCollection.Insert(3, "Inserted Item"); // Display contents of MyCollection in a MessageBox string str = ""; foreach (string s in MyCollection) str += s + Environment.NewLine; MessageBox.Show(str); } } } And finally, here's the xaml for the main window: <Window x:Class="ItemsControlTest.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:src="clr-namespace:ItemsControlTest" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300"> <Grid> <src:UserControl1 /> </Grid> </Window> Well, that's everything. I'm not sure why editing the TextBox.Text properties in the window does not seem to update the source property for the binding in the code behind, namely MyCollection. Clicking on the button pretty much causes the problem to stare me in the face;) Please help me understand where I'm going wrong. Thanx! Andrew

  • JSON Formatting with Jersey, Jackson, & json.org/java Parser using Curl Command

    - by socal_javaguy
    Using Java 6, Tomcat 7, Jersey 1.15, Jackson 2.0.6 (from FasterXml maven repo), & www.json.org parser, I am trying to pretty print the JSON String so it will look indented by the curl -X GET command line. I created a simple web service which has the following architecture: My POJOs (model classes): Family.java import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; @XmlRootElement public class Family { private String father; private String mother; private List<Children> children; // Getter & Setters } Children.java import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; @XmlRootElement public class Children { private String name; private String age; private String gender; // Getters & Setters } Using a Utility Class, I decided to hard code the POJOs as follows: public class FamilyUtil { public static Family getFamily() { Family family = new Family(); family.setFather("Joe"); family.setMother("Jennifer"); Children child = new Children(); child.setName("Jimmy"); child.setAge("12"); child.setGender("male"); List<Children> children = new ArrayList<Children>(); children.add(child); family.setChildren(children); return family; } } My web service: import java.io.IOException; import javax.ws.rs.GET; import javax.ws.rs.Path; import javax.ws.rs.PathParam; import javax.ws.rs.Produces; import javax.ws.rs.core.MediaType; import org.codehaus.jackson.JsonGenerationException; import org.codehaus.jackson.map.JsonMappingException; import org.codehaus.jackson.map.ObjectMapper; import org.codehaus.jettison.json.JSONException; import org.json.JSONObject; import org.json.JSONTokener; import com.myapp.controller.myappController; import com.myapp.resource.output.HostingSegmentOutput; import com.myapp.util.FamilyUtil; @Path("") public class MyWebService { @GET @Produces(MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON) public static String getFamily() throws IOException, JsonGenerationException, JsonMappingException, JSONException, org.json.JSONException { ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper(); String uglyJsonString = mapper.writeValueAsString(FamilyUtil.getFamily()); System.out.println(uglyJsonString); JSONTokener tokener = new JSONTokener(uglyJsonString); JSONObject finalResult = new JSONObject(tokener); return finalResult.toString(4); } } When I run this using: curl -X GET http://localhost:8080/mywebservice I get this in my Eclipse's console: {"father":"Joe","mother":"Jennifer","children":[{"name":"Jimmy","age":"12","gender":"male"}]} But from the curl command on the command line (this response is more important): "{\n \"mother\": \"Jennifer\",\n \"children\": [{\n \"age\": \"12\",\n \"name\": \"Jimmy\",\n \"gender\": \"male\"\n }],\n \"father\": \"Joe\"\n}" This is adding newline escape sequences and placing double quotes (but not indenting like it should it does have 4 spaces after the new line but its all in one line). Would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.

  • Code Golf: Finite-state machine!

    - by Adam Matan
    Finite state machine A deterministic finite state machine is a simple computation model, widely used as an introduction to automata theory in basic CS courses. It is a simple model, equivalent to regular expression, which determines of a certain input string is Accepted or Rejected. Leaving some formalities aside, A run of a finite state machine is composed of: alphabet, a set of characters. states, usually visualized as circles. One of the states must be the start state. Some of the states might be accepting, usually visualized as double circles. transitions, usually visualized as directed arches between states, are directed links between states associated with an alphabet letter. input string, a list of alphabet characters. A run on the machine begins at the starting state. Each letter of the input string is read; If there is a transition between the current state and another state which corresponds to the letter, the current state is changed to the new state. After the last letter was read, if the current state is an accepting state, the input string is accepted. If the last state was not an accepting state, or a letter had no corresponding arch from a state during the run, the input string is rejected. Note: This short descruption is far from being a full, formal definition of a FSM; Wikipedia's fine article is a great introduction to the subject. Example For example, the following machine tells if a binary number, read from left to right, has an even number of 0s: The alphabet is the set {0,1}. The states are S1 and S2. The transitions are (S1, 0) -> S2, (S1, 1) -> S1, (S2, 0) -> S1 and (S2, 1) -> S2. The input string is any binary number, including an empty string. The rules: Implement a FSM in a language of your choice. Input The FSM should accept the following input: <States> List of state, separated by space mark. The first state in the list is the start state. Accepting states begin with a capital letter. <transitions> One or more lines. Each line is a three-tuple: origin state, letter, destination state) <input word> Zero or more characters, followed by a newline. For example, the aforementioned machine with 1001010 as an input string, would be written as: S1 s2 S1 0 s2 S1 1 S1 s2 0 S1 s2 1 s2 1001010 Output The FSM's run, written as <State> <letter> -> <state>, followed by the final state. The output for the example input would be: S1 1 -> S1 S1 0 -> s2 s2 0 -> S1 S1 1 -> S1 S1 0 -> s2 s2 1 -> s2 s2 0 -> S1 ACCEPT For the empty input '': S1 ACCEPT For 101: S1 1 -> S1 S1 0 -> s2 s2 1 -> s2 REJECT For '10X': S1 1 -> S1 S1 0 -> s2 s2 X REJECT Prize A nice bounty will be given to the most elegant and short solution. Reference implementation A reference Python implementation will be published soon.

  • Servlet Filter: Socket need to be referenced in doFilter()

    - by Craig m
    Right now I have a filter that has the sockets opened in the init and for some reason when I open them in doFilter() it doesn't work with the server app right so I have no choice but to put it in the init I need to be able to reference the outSide.println("test"); in doFilter() so I can send that to my server app every time the if statement it in is is tripped. Heres my code: import java.net.*; import java.io.*; import java.util.*; import javax.servlet.*; import javax.servlet.http.*; public final class IEFilter implements Filter { public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException { String browser = ""; String blockInfo; String address = request.getRemoteAddr(); if(((HttpServletRequest)request).getHeader ("User-Agent").indexOf("MSIE") >= 0) { browser = "Internet Explorer"; } if(browser.equals("Internet Explorer")) { BufferedWriter fW = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter("C://logs//IElog.rtf")); blockInfo = "Blocked IE user from:" + address; response.setContentType("text/html"); PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); out.println("<HTML>"); out.println("<HEAD>"); out.println("<TITLE>"); out.println("This page is not available - JNetProtect"); out.println("</TITLE>"); out.println("</HEAD>"); out.println("<BODY>"); out.println("<center><H1>Error 403</H1>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<H1>Access Denied</H1>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("Sorry, that resource may not be accessed now."); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<br>"); out.println("<hr />"); out.println("<i>Page Filtered By JNetProtect</i>"); out.println("</BODY>"); out.println("</HTML>"); //init.outSide.println("Blocked and Internet Explorer user"); fW.write(blockInfo); fW.newLine(); fW.close(); } else { chain.doFilter(request, response); } } public void destroy() { outsocket.close(); outSide.close(); } public void init(FilterConfig filterConfig) { try { ServerSocket fs; Socket outsocket; PrintWriter outSide ; outsocket = new Socket("Localhost", 1337); outSide = new PrintWriter(outsocket.getOutputStream(), true); }catch (Exception e){ System.out.println("error with this connection"); e.printStackTrace();} } }

  • Windows Phone 7 Connect to SharePoint via SOAP

    - by Mitchell Skurnik
    I am making my second application for the Windows 7 Phone Series platform and I cannot seem to connect to a SharePoint server using https. 99% of the following is not my code. I have borrowed it from http://blog.daisley-harrison.com/blog/post/Practical-Silverlight-and-SharePoint-Integration-Part-Two.aspx untill I can further understand how SOAP works in W7P Series. I know that I need some way of sending credentials over but the win 7 API does not seem to let you. If you dig down into the error output it says access is denied. I have tried various methods of sending credentials but none seem to work. "ClientCredentials.Windows" is not supported and ClientCredentials.UsersName.Username is read only.

  • Why is my code returning a Null Object Refrence error when using WatIn?

    - by Fuzz Evans
    I keep getting a Null Object Refrence Error, but can't tell why. I have a CSV file that contains 100 urls. The file is read into an array called "lines". public partial class Form1 : System.Windows.Forms.Form { string[] lines; public Form1() ... private void ReadLinksIntoMemory() { //this reads the chosen csv file into our "lines" array //and splits on comma's and new lines to create new objects within the array using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(@"C:\temp.csv")) { //reads everything in our csv into 1 long line string fileContents = sr.ReadToEnd(); //splits the 1 long line read in into multiple objects of the lines array lines = fileContents.Split(new string[] { ",", Environment.NewLine }, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); sr.Dispose(); } } The next part is where I get the null object error. When I try to use WatIn to go to the first item in the lines array it says I'm referencing a null object. private void GoToEditLinks() { for (int i = 0; i < lines.Length; i++) { //go to each link sequentially myIE.GoTo(lines[i].ToString()); //sleep so we can make sure the page loads System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(5000); } } When I debug the code it says that the GoTo request calls lines which is null. It seems like I need to declare the array, but don't I need to tell it an exact size to do that? Example: lines = new string[10] I thought I could use the lines.Length to tell it how big to make the array but that didn't work. What is weird to me is I can use the following code without problem: //returns the accurate number of urls that were in the CSV we read in earlier txtbx1.text = lines.Length; //or //this returns the last entry in the csv, as well as the last entry in the array TextBox2.Text = lines[lines.Length - 1]; I am confused why the array clearly has items in it, they can be called to fill a text box, but when I try to call them in my for loop it says its a null reference? UPDATE: By placing my cursor on both calls to lines and pressing f12 I find they both go to the same instance. The thought next is that I am not calling ReadLinksIntoMemory in time, below is my code: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { button1.Enabled = false; ReadLinksIntoMemory(); GoToEditLinks(); button1.Enabled = true; } Unless I'm mistaken the code says that the ReadLinksIntoMemory method must complete before GoToEditLinks can be called? If ReadLinksIntoMemory didn't finish in time I shouldn't be able to fill my text boxes with the lines array length and/or last entry. UPDATE: Stepping into the method GoToEditLinks() I see that lines is null before it calls: myIE.GoTo(lines[i]); but when it hits the goto command the value changes from null to the url it is suppose to go to, but at that same time it gives me the null object error? UPDATE: I added a IsNullOrEmpty check method and lines array passes it without any issue. I'm beginning to think it is an issue with WatIn and the myIE.GoTo command. I think this is the stack trace/call stack? Program.exe!Program.Form1.GoToEditLinks() Line 284 C# Program.exe!Program.Form1.button1_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e) Line 191 + 0x8 bytes C# [External Code] Program.exe!Program.Program.Main() Line 18 + 0x1d bytes C# [External Code]

  • DataTable to JSON

    - by Joel Coehoorn
    I recently needed to serialize a datatable to JSON. Where I'm at we're still on .Net 2.0, so I can't use the JSON serializer in .Net 3.5. I figured this must have been done before, so I went looking online and found a number of different options. Some of them depend on an additional library, which I would have a hard time pushing through here. Others require first converting to List<Dictionary<>>, which seemed a little awkward and needless. Another treated all values like a string. For one reason or another I couldn't really get behind any of them, so I decided to roll my own, which is posted below. As you can see from reading the //TODO comments, it's incomplete in a few places. This code is already in production here, so it does "work" in the basic sense. The places where it's incomplete are places where we know our production data won't currently hit it (no timespans or byte arrays in the db). The reason I'm posting here is that I feel like this can be a little better, and I'd like help finishing and improving this code. Any input welcome. public static class JSONHelper { public static string FromDataTable(DataTable dt) { string rowDelimiter = ""; StringBuilder result = new StringBuilder("["); foreach (DataRow row in dt.Rows) { result.Append(rowDelimiter); result.Append(FromDataRow(row)); rowDelimiter = ","; } result.Append("]"); return result.ToString(); } public static string FromDataRow(DataRow row) { DataColumnCollection cols = row.Table.Columns; string colDelimiter = ""; StringBuilder result = new StringBuilder("{"); for (int i = 0; i < cols.Count; i++) { // use index rather than foreach, so we can use the index for both the row and cols collection result.Append(colDelimiter).Append("\"") .Append(cols[i].ColumnName).Append("\":") .Append(JSONValueFromDataRowObject(row[i], cols[i].DataType)); colDelimiter = ","; } result.Append("}"); return result.ToString(); } // possible types: // http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.datacolumn.datatype(VS.80).aspx private static Type[] numeric = new Type[] {typeof(byte), typeof(decimal), typeof(double), typeof(Int16), typeof(Int32), typeof(SByte), typeof(Single), typeof(UInt16), typeof(UInt32), typeof(UInt64)}; // I don't want to rebuild this value for every date cell in the table private static long EpochTicks = new DateTime(1970, 1, 1).Ticks; private static string JSONValueFromDataRowObject(object value, Type DataType) { // null if (value == DBNull.Value) return "null"; // numeric if (Array.IndexOf(numeric, DataType) > -1) return value.ToString(); // TODO: eventually want to use a stricter format // boolean if (DataType == typeof(bool)) return ((bool)value) ? "true" : "false"; // date -- see http://weblogs.asp.net/bleroy/archive/2008/01/18/dates-and-json.aspx if (DataType == typeof(DateTime)) return "\"\\/Date(" + new TimeSpan(((DateTime)value).ToUniversalTime().Ticks - EpochTicks).TotalMilliseconds.ToString() + ")\\/\""; // TODO: add Timespan support // TODO: add Byte[] support //TODO: this would be _much_ faster with a state machine // string/char return "\"" + value.ToString().Replace(@"\", @"\\").Replace(Environment.NewLine, @"\n").Replace("\"", @"\""") + "\""; } }

  • Write to file depending on minSdkVersion - android

    - by Simon Rosenqvist
    Hi, I have written a filewriter for my android application. It is to function on a Galaxy Tab, so my minSdkVersion has to be at least 4, so it will fill the screen. I originally started out with SdkVersion = 2 and at that point my filewriter worked perfectly. Changing the SdkVersion to 4 introduced the problem. My filewriter doesn't work anymore! The application runs fine, but a file doesn't get created. My .java file looks like this: public class HelloAndroid extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. Do i have to make a new filewriter? or what to do? Sorry for the messy code, i'm quite new to programming :)

  • Need help with regex parsing (in perl)

    Hi all, need some help parsing an html file in perl. I used the LWP module to retrieve a webpage into $_ with $/ undefined so there are no newline issues. • Rails, gmail: howto get plain/text from body

    Hello, I am loading am email with IMAP and parsing it with mail. This works very well, however the mail.body.decoded field contains a lot of formatting. How do I dig out the plain/txt body of the email - ignore attachements, formatting etc. It works fine if I try with an email without html. source = imap.uid_fetch(uid, ['RFC822']).first.attr['RFC822'] mail = Mail.new(source) This body content looks like this: Mail::Body:0x7f36ed468270 @epilogue="", @boundary="_004_4C49171DCB8C4540844E69DD39FDD98Ffirm_", @encoding="7bit", @raw_source="--_004_4C49171DCB8C4540844E69DD39FDD98Ffirm_\r\nContent-Type: multipart/alternative;\r\n\tboundary=\"_000_4C49171DCB8C4540844E69DD39FDD98Ffirm_\"\r\n\r\n--_000_4C49171DCB8C4540844E69DD39FDD98Ffirm_\r\nContent-Type: text/plain; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\r\nContent-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable\r\n\r\ndasdsasda\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMed venlig hilsen / Med V=E4nlig H=E4lsning / Best Regards\r\r\nAsbj=F8rn Toke Morell. .\r\n+45 7020 0160\r\n+45 2152 0015\r\n[cid:[email protected]]\r\nhttp://www..dk\r\n\r\n\r\n--_000_4C49171DCB8C4540844E69DD39FDD98Ffirm_\r\nContent-Type: text/html; charset=\"iso-8859-1\"\r\nContent-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable\r\n\r\n<html>headheadbody style3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode:=\r\n space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; ">dasdsasda<br><div apple-co=\r\nntent-edited=3D"true">\r\n<span class=3D"Apple-style-span" style=3D"border-collapse: separate; color:=\r\n rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helvetica; font-size: medium; font-style: norma=\r\nl; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-=\r\nheight: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: auto; text-indent: 0px; text-transf=\r\norm: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-borde=\r\nr-horizontal-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 0px; -webkit-te=\r\nxt-decorations-in-effect: none; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-tex=\r\nt-stroke-width: 0px; "><span class=3D"Apple-style-span" style=3D"font-famil=\r\ny: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; "><span class=3D"Apple-style-span"=\r\n style=3D"border-collapse: separate; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Helv=\r\netica; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-we=\r\night: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text=\r\n-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-sp=\r\nacing: 0px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-vertical=\r\n-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; -webkit-text-size-=\r\nadjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; "><span class=3D"Apple-style-=\r\nspan" style=3D"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; "><div st=\r\nyle=3D"margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-=\r\nleft: 0cm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; "><font class=\r\n=3D"Apple-style-span" color=3D"#000080" face=3D"'Times New Roman', serif" s=\r\nize=3D"3"><span class=3D"Apple-style-span" style=3D"font-size: 13px; "><br =\r\nclass=3D"Apple-interchange-newline"><br></span></font></div><div style=3D"m=\r\nargin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0c=\r\nm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; "><font class=3D"Appl=\r\ne-style-span" color=3D"#000080" face=3D"'Times New Roman', serif" size=3D"3=\r\n"><span class=3D"Apple-style-span" style=3D"font-size: 13px; "><br></span><=\r\n/font></div><div style=3D"margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-bottom=\r\n: 0.0001pt; margin-left: 0cm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-s=\r\nerif; "><span style=3D"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', ser=\r\nif; color: navy; ">Med venlig hilsen / Med V=E4nlig H=E4lsning / Best Regar=\r\nds&nbsp;<br>firm<br>Asbj=F8rn Toke Morell...   • Need help modifying my Custom Replace code based on string passed to it

    - by fraXis
    Hello, I have a C# program that will open a text file, parse it for certain criteria using a RegEx statement, and then write a new text file with the changed criteria. For example: I have a text file with a bunch of machine codes in it such as: X0.109Y0Z1.G0H2E1 My C# program will take this and turn it into: X0.109Y0G54G0T3 G43Z1.H2M08 (Note: the T3 value is really the H value (H2 in this case) + 1). T = H + 1 It works great, because the line usually always starts with X so the RegEx statement always matches. My RegEx that works with my first example is as follows: //Regex pattern for: //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)M(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)A(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)M(value)A(value) //value can be positive or negative, integer or floating point number with multiple decimal places or without any private Regex regReal = new Regex("^(X([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(Y([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(Z([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(G([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(H([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(E([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(M([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*)?(A([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*)?$"); This RegEx works great because sometimes the line of code could also have an M or A at the end such as: X0.109Y0Z1.G0H2E1A2 My problem is now I have run into some lines of code that have this: G90G0X1.5Y-0.036E1Z3.H1 and I need to turn it into this: G90G0X1.5Y-0.036G54T2 G43Z3.H1M08 Can someone please modify my RegEx and code to turn this: G90G0X1.5Y-0.036E1Z3.H1 into: G90G0X1.5Y-0.036G54T2 G43Z3.H1M08 But sometimes the values could be a little different such as: G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)E(value)Z(value)H(value) G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)E(value)Z(value)H(value)A(value) G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)E(value)Z(value)H(value)A(value)(M)value G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)E(value)Z(value)H(value)M(value)(A)value But also (this is where Z is moved to a different spot) G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)Z(value)E(value)H(value) G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)Z(value)E(value)H(value)A(value) G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)Z(value)E(value)H(value)A(value)(M)value G(value)G(value)X(value)Y(value)Z(value)E(value)H(value)M(value)(A)value Here is my code that needs to be changed (I did not include the open and saving of the text file since that is pretty standard stuff). //Regex pattern for: //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)M(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)A(value) //- X(value)Y(value)Z(value)G(value)H(value)E(value)M(value)A(value) //value can be pozitive or negative, integer or floating point number with multiple decimal places or without any private Regex regReal = new Regex("^(X([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(Y([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(Z([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(G([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(H([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(E([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*){1}(M([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*)?(A([-]|[.]|[-.]|[0-9])[0-9]*[.]*[0-9]*)?$"); private string CheckAndModifyLine(string line) { if (regReal.IsMatch(line)) //Check the first Regex with line string { return CustomReplace(line); } else { return line; } } private string CustomReplace(string input) { string returnValue = String.Empty; int zPos = input.IndexOf("Z"); int gPos = input.IndexOf("G"); int hPos = input.IndexOf("H"); int ePos = input.IndexOf("E"); int aPos = input.IndexOf("A"); int hValue = Int32.Parse(input.Substring(hPos + 1, ePos - hPos - 1)) + 1; //get H number //remove A value returnValue = ((aPos == -1) ? input : input.Substring(0, aPos)); //replace Z value returnValue = Regex.Replace(returnValue, "Z[-]?\\d*\\.*\\d*", "G54"); //replace H value returnValue = Regex.Replace(returnValue, "H\\d*\\.*\\d*", "T" + hValue.ToString() + ((aPos == -1) ? String.Empty : input.Substring(aPos, input.Length - aPos))); //replace E, or E and M value returnValue = Regex.Replace(returnValue, "E\\d*\\.*\\d(M\\d*\\.*\\d)?", Environment.NewLine + "G43" + input.Substring(zPos, gPos - zPos) + input.Substring(hPos, ePos - hPos) + "M08"); return returnValue; } I tried to modify the above code to match the new line of text I am encountering (and split into two lines like my first example) but I am failing miserably. Thanks so much.

  • Why should main() be short?

    - by Stargazer712
    I've been programming for over 9 years, and according to the advice of my first programming teacher, I always keep my main() function extremely short. At first I had no idea why. I just obeyed without understanding, much to the delight of my professors. After gaining experience, I realized that if I designed my code correctly, having a short main() function just sortof happened. Writing modularized code and following the single responsibility principle allowed my code to be designed in "bunches", and main() served as nothing more than a catalyst to get the program running. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I was looking at Python's souce code, and I found the main() function: /* Minimal main program -- everything is loaded from the library */ ... int main(int argc, char **argv) { ... return Py_Main(argc, argv); } Yay Python. Short main() function == Good code. Programming teachers were right. Wanting to look deeper, I took a look at Py_Main. In its entirety, it is defined as follows: /* Main program */ int Py_Main(int argc, char **argv) { int c; int sts; char *command = NULL; char *filename = NULL; char *module = NULL; FILE *fp = stdin; char *p; int unbuffered = 0; int skipfirstline = 0; int stdin_is_interactive = 0; int help = 0; int version = 0; int saw_unbuffered_flag = 0; PyCompilerFlags cf; cf.cf_flags = 0; orig_argc = argc; /* For Py_GetArgcArgv() */ orig_argv = argv; It seems as though Python did the "Intro to Programming 101" trick and just moved all of main()'s code to a different function called it something very similar to "main". Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

  • 64-bit Archives Needed

    - by user9154181
    A little over a year ago, we received a question from someone who was trying to build software on Solaris. He was getting errors from the ar command when creating an archive. At that time, the ar command on Solaris was a 32-bit command. There was more than 2GB of data, and the ar command was hitting the file size limit for a 32-bit process that doesn't use the largefile APIs. Even in 2011, 2GB is a very large amount of code, so we had not heard this one before. Most of our toolchain was extended to handle 64-bit sized data back in the 1990's, but archives were not changed, presumably because there was no perceived need for it. Since then of course, programs have continued to get larger, and in 2010, the time had finally come to investigate the issue and find a way to provide for larger archives. As part of that process, I had to do a deep dive into the archive format, and also do some Unix archeology. I'm going to record what I learned here, to document what Solaris does, and in the hope that it might help someone else trying to solve the same problem for their platform. Archive Format Details Archives are hardly cutting edge technology. They are still used of course, but their basic form hasn't changed in decades. Other than to fix a bug, which is rare, we don't tend to touch that code much. The archive file format is described in /usr/include/ar.h, and I won't repeat the details here. Instead, here is a rough overview of the archive file format, implemented by System V Release 4 (SVR4) Unix systems such as Solaris: Every archive starts with a "magic number". This is a sequence of 8 characters: "!<arch>\n". The magic number is followed by 1 or more members. A member starts with a fixed header, defined by the ar_hdr structure in/usr/include/ar.h. Immediately following the header comes the data for the member. Members must be padded at the end with newline characters so that they have even length. The requirement to pad members to an even length is a dead giveaway as to the age of the archive format. It tells you that this format dates from the 1970's, and more specifically from the era of 16-bit systems such as the PDP-11 that Unix was originally developed on. A 32-bit system would have required 4 bytes, and 64-bit systems such as we use today would probably have required 8 bytes. 2 byte alignment is a poor choice for ELF object archive members. 32-bit objects require 4 byte alignment, and 64-bit objects require 64-bit alignment. The link-editor uses mmap() to process archives, and if the members have the wrong alignment, we have to slide (copy) them to the correct alignment before we can access the ELF data structures inside. The archive format requires 2 byte padding, but it doesn't prohibit more. The Solaris ar command takes advantage of this, and pads ELF object members to 8 byte boundaries. Anything else is padded to 2 as required by the format. The archive header (ar_hdr) represents all numeric values using an ASCII text representation rather than as binary integers. This means that an archive that contains only text members can be viewed using tools such as cat, more, or a text editor. The original designers of this format clearly thought that archives would be used for many file types, and not just for objects. Things didn't turn out that way of course — nearly all archives contain relocatable objects for a single operating system and machine, and are used primarily as input to the link-editor (ld). Archives can have special members that are created by the ar command rather than being supplied by the user. These special members are all distinguished by having a name that starts with the slash (/) character. This is an unambiguous marker that says that the user could not have supplied it. The reason for this is that regular archive members are given the plain name of the file that was inserted to create them, and any path components are stripped off. Slash is the delimiter character used by Unix to separate path components, and as such cannot occur within a plain file name. The ar command hides the special members from you when you list the contents of an archive, so most users don't know that they exist. There are only two possible special members: A symbol table that maps ELF symbols to the object archive member that provides it, and a string table used to hold member names that exceed 15 characters. The '/' convention for tagging special members provides room for adding more such members should the need arise. As I will discuss below, we took advantage of this fact to add an alternate 64-bit symbol table special member which is used in archives that are larger than 4GB. When an archive contains ELF object members, the ar command builds a special archive member known as the symbol table that maps all ELF symbols in the object to the archive member that provides it. The link-editor uses this symbol table to determine which symbols are provided by the objects in that archive. If an archive has a symbol table, it will always be the first member in the archive, immediately following the magic number. Unlike member headers, symbol tables do use binary integers to represent offsets. These integers are always stored in big-endian format, even on a little endian host such as x86. The archive header (ar_hdr) provides 15 characters for representing the member name. If any member has a name that is longer than this, then the real name is written into a special archive member called the string table, and the member's name field instead contains a slash (/) character followed by a decimal representation of the offset of the real name within the string table. The string table is required to precede all normal archive members, so it will be the second member if the archive contains a symbol table, and the first member otherwise. The archive format is not designed to make finding a given member easy. Such operations move through the archive from front to back examining each member in turn, and run in O(n) time. This would be bad if archives were commonly used in that manner, but in general, they are not. Typically, the ar command is used to build an new archive from scratch, inserting all the objects in one operation, and then the link-editor accesses the members in the archive in constant time by using the offsets provided by the symbol table. Both of these operations are reasonably efficient. However, listing the contents of a large archive with the ar command can be rather slow. Factors That Limit Solaris Archive Size As is often the case, there was more than one limiting factor preventing Solaris archives from growing beyond the 32-bit limits of 2GB (32-bit signed) and 4GB (32-bit unsigned). These limits are listed in the order they are hit as archive size grows, so the earlier ones mask those that follow. The original Solaris archive file format can handle sizes up to 4GB without issue. However, the ar command was delivered as a 32-bit executable that did not use the largefile APIs. As such, the ar command itself could not create a file larger than 2GB. One can solve this by building ar with the largefile APIs which would allow it to reach 4GB, but a simpler and better answer is to deliver a 64-bit ar, which has the ability to scale well past 4GB. Symbol table offsets are stored as 32-bit big-endian binary integers, which limits the maximum archive size to 4GB. To get around this limit requires a different symbol table format, or an extension mechanism to the current one, similar in nature to the way member names longer than 15 characters are handled in member headers. The size field in the archive member header (ar_hdr) is an ASCII string capable of representing a 32-bit unsigned value. This places a 4GB size limit on the size of any individual member in an archive. In considering format extensions to get past these limits, it is important to remember that very few archives will require the ability to scale past 4GB for many years. The old format, while no beauty, continues to be sufficient for its purpose. This argues for a backward compatible fix that allows newer versions of Solaris to produce archives that are compatible with older versions of the system unless the size of the archive exceeds 4GB. Archive Format Differences Among Unix Variants While considering how to extend Solaris archives to scale to 64-bits, I wanted to know how similar archives from other Unix systems are to those produced by Solaris, and whether they had already solved the 64-bit issue. I've successfully moved archives between different Unix systems before with good luck, so I knew that there was some commonality. If it turned out that there was already a viable defacto standard for 64-bit archives, it would obviously be better to adopt that rather than invent something new. The archive file format is not formally standardized. However, the ar command and archive format were part of the original Unix from Bell Labs. Other systems started with that format, extending it in various often incompatible ways, but usually with the same common shared core. Most of these systems use the same magic number to identify their archives, despite the fact that their archives are not always fully compatible with each other. It is often true that archives can be copied between different Unix variants, and if the member names are short enough, the ar command from one system can often read archives produced on another. In practice, it is rare to find an archive containing anything other than objects for a single operating system and machine type. Such an archive is only of use on the type of system that created it, and is only used on that system. This is probably why cross platform compatibility of archives between Unix variants has never been an issue. Otherwise, the use of the same magic number in archives with incompatible formats would be a problem. I was able to find information for a number of Unix variants, described below. These can be divided roughly into three tribes, SVR4 Unix, BSD Unix, and IBM AIX. Solaris is a SVR4 Unix, and its archives are completely compatible with those from the other members of that group (GNU/Linux, HP-UX, and SGI IRIX). AIX AIX is an exception to rule that Unix archive formats are all based on the original Bell labs Unix format. It appears that AIX supports 2 formats (small and big), both of which differ in fundamental ways from other Unix systems: These formats use a different magic number than the standard one used by Solaris and other Unix variants. They include support for removing archive members from a file without reallocating the file, marking dead areas as unused, and reusing them when new archive items are inserted. They have a special table of contents member (File Member Header) which lets you find out everything that's in the archive without having to actually traverse the entire file. Their symbol table members are quite similar to those from other systems though. Their member headers are doubly linked, containing offsets to both the previous and next members. Of the Unix systems described here, AIX has the only format I saw that will have reasonable insert/delete performance for really large archives. Everyone else has O(n) performance, and are going to be slow to use with large archives. BSD BSD has gone through 4 versions of archive format, which are described in their manpage. They use the same member header as SVR4, but their symbol table format is different, and their scheme for long member names puts the name directly after the member header rather than into a string table. GNU/Linux The GNU toolchain uses the SVR4 format, and is compatible with Solaris. HP-UX HP-UX seems to follow the SVR4 model, and is compatible with Solaris. IRIX IRIX has 32 and 64-bit archives. The 32-bit format is the standard SVR4 format, and is compatible with Solaris. The 64-bit format is the same, except that the symbol table uses 64-bit integers. IRIX assumes that an archive contains objects of a single ELFCLASS/MACHINE, and any archive containing ELFCLASS64 objects receives a 64-bit symbol table. Although they only use it for 64-bit objects, nothing in the archive format limits it to ELFCLASS64. It would be perfectly valid to produce a 64-bit symbol table in an archive containing 32-bit objects, text files, or anything else. Tru64 Unix (Digital/Compaq/HP) Tru64 Unix uses a format much like ours, but their symbol table is a hash table, making specific symbol lookup much faster. The Solaris link-editor uses archives by examining the entire symbol table looking for unsatisfied symbols for the link, and not by looking up individual symbols, so there would be no benefit to Solaris from such a hash table. The Tru64 ld must use a different approach in which the hash table pays off for them. Widening the existing SVR4 archive symbol tables rather than inventing something new is the simplest path forward. There is ample precedent for this approach in the ELF world. When ELF was extended to support 64-bit objects, the approach was largely to take the existing data structures, and define 64-bit versions of them. We called the old set ELF32, and the new set ELF64. My guess is that there was no need to widen the archive format at that time, but had there been, it seems obvious that this is how it would have been done. The Implementation of 64-bit Solaris Archives As mentioned earlier, there was no desire to improve the fundamental nature of archives. They have always had O(n) insert/delete behavior, and for the most part it hasn't mattered. AIX made efforts to improve this, but those efforts did not find widespread adoption. For the purposes of link-editing, which is essentially the only thing that archives are used for, the existing format is adequate, and issues of backward compatibility trump the desire to do something technically better. Widening the existing symbol table format to 64-bits is therefore the obvious way to proceed. For Solaris 11, I implemented that, and I also updated the ar command so that a 64-bit version is run by default. This eliminates the 2 most significant limits to archive size, leaving only the limit on an individual archive member. We only generate a 64-bit symbol table if the archive exceeds 4GB, or when the new -S option to the ar command is used. This maximizes backward compatibility, as an archive produced by Solaris 11 is highly likely to be less than 4GB in size, and will therefore employ the same format understood by older versions of the system. The main reason for the existence of the -S option is to allow us to test the 64-bit format without having to construct huge archives to do so. I don't believe it will find much use outside of that. Other than the new ability to create and use extremely large archives, this change is largely invisible to the end user. When reading an archive, the ar command will transparently accept either form of symbol table. Similarly, the ELF library (libelf) has been updated to understand either format. Users of libelf (such as the link-editor ld) do not need to be modified to use the new format, because these changes are encapsulated behind the existing functions provided by libelf. As mentioned above, this work did not lift the limit on the maximum size of an individual archive member. That limit remains fixed at 4GB for now. This is not because we think objects will never get that large, for the history of computing says otherwise. Rather, this is based on an estimation that single relocatable objects of that size will not appear for a decade or two. A lot can change in that time, and it is better not to overengineer things by writing code that will sit and rot for years without being used. It is not too soon however to have a plan for that eventuality. When the time comes when this limit needs to be lifted, I believe that there is a simple solution that is consistent with the existing format. The archive member header size field is an ASCII string, like the name, and as such, the overflow scheme used for long names can also be used to handle the size. The size string would be placed into the archive string table, and its offset in the string table would then be written into the archive header size field using the same format "/ddd" used for overflowed names.

In its entirety, it is defined as follows: /* Main program */ int Py_Main(int argc, char **argv) { int c; int sts; char *command = NULL; char *filename = NULL; char *module = NULL; FILE *fp = stdin; char *p; It seems as though Python did the "Intro to Programming 101" trick and just moved all of main()'s code to a different function called it something very similar to "main". Here's my question: Is this code terribly written, or are there other reasons to have a short main function? As it stands right now, I see absolutely no difference between doing this and just moving the code in Py_Main() back into main(). Am I wrong in thinking this?

  • Python - Converting CSV to Objects - Code Design

    - by victorhooi
    Hi, I have a small script we're using to read in a CSV file containing employees, and perform some basic manipulations on that data. We read in the data (import_gd_dump), and create an Employees object, containing a list of Employee objects (maybe I should think of a better naming convention...lol). We then call clean_all_phone_numbers() on Employees, which calls clean_phone_number() on each Employee, as well as lookup_all_supervisors(), on Employees. import csv import re import sys #class CSVLoader: # """Virtual class to assist with loading in CSV files.""" # def import_gd_dump(self, input_file='Gp Directory 20100331 original.csv'): # gd_extract = csv.DictReader(open(input_file), dialect='excel') # employees = [] # for row in gd_extract: # curr_employee = Employee(row) # employees.append(curr_employee) # return employees # #self.employees = {row['dbdirid']:row for row in gd_extract} # Previously, this was inside a (virtual) class called "CSVLoader". # However, according to here (http://tomayko.com/writings/the-static-method-thing) - the idiomatic way of doing this in Python is not with a class-fucntion but with a module-level function def import_gd_dump(input_file='Gp Directory 20100331 original.csv'): """Return a list ('employee') of dict objects, taken from a Group Directory CSV file.""" gd_extract = csv.DictReader(open(input_file), dialect='excel') employees = [] for row in gd_extract: employees.append(row) return employees def write_gd_formatted(employees_dict, output_file="gd_formatted.csv"): """Read in an Employees() object, and write out each Employee() inside this to a CSV file""" gd_output_fieldnames = ('hrid', 'mail', 'givenName', 'sn', 'dbcostcenter', 'dbdirid', 'hrreportsto', 'PHFull', 'PHFull_message', 'SupervisorEmail', 'SupervisorFirstName', 'SupervisorSurname') try: gd_formatted = csv.DictWriter(open(output_file, 'w', newline=''), fieldnames=gd_output_fieldnames, extrasaction='ignore', dialect='excel') except IOError: print('Unable to open file, IO error (Is it locked?)') sys.exit(1) headers = {n:n for n in gd_output_fieldnames} gd_formatted.writerow(headers) for employee in employees_dict.employee_list: # We're using the employee object's inbuilt __dict__ attribute - hmm, is this good practice? gd_formatted.writerow(employee.__dict__) class Employee: """An Employee in the system, with employee attributes (name, email, cost-centre etc.)""" def __init__(self, employee_attributes): """We use the Employee constructor to convert a dictionary into instance attributes.""" for k, v in employee_attributes.items(): setattr(self, k, v) def clean_phone_number(self): """Perform some rudimentary checks and corrections, to make sure numbers are in the right format. Is the logic/design sound? Anyhow, to the specifics: The Employees object has a method, clean_all_phone_numbers(), which calls clean_phone_number() on each Employee object inside it. Is this bad design? If so, why? Also, is the way I'm calling lookup_all_supervisors() bad? Originally, I wrapped the clean_phone_number() and lookup_supervisor() method in a single function, with a single for-loop inside it. clean_phone_number is O(n), I believe, lookup_supervisor is O(n^2) - is it ok splitting it into two loops like this? In clean_all_phone_numbers(), I'm looping on the Employee objects, and settings their values using return/assignment - should I be setting this inside clean_phone_number() itself? There's also a few things that I'm sorted of hacked out, not sure if they're bad practice - e.g. print_employee() and gd_formatted() both use __dict__, and the constructor for Employee uses setattr() to convert a dictionary into instance attributes. I'd value any thoughts at all. If you think the questions are too broad, let me know and I can repost as several split up (I just didn't want to pollute the boards with multiple similar questions, and the three questions are more or less fairly tightly related). Cheers, Victor

  • ASp.Net Mvc 1.0 Dynamic Images Returned from Controller taking 154 seconds+ to display in IE8, firef

    - by julian guppy
    I have a curious problem with IE, IIS 6.0 dynamic PNG files and I am baffled as to how to fix.. Snippet from Helper (this returns the URL to the view for requesting the images from my Controller. string url = LinkBuilder.BuildUrlFromExpression(helper.ViewContext.RequestContext, helper.RouteCollection, c = c.FixHeight(ir.Filename, ir.AltText, "FFFFFF")); url = url.Replace("&", "&"); sb.Append(string.Format("<removed id=\"TheImage\" src=\"{0}\" alt=\"\" /", url)+Environment.NewLine); This produces a piece of html as follows:- img id="TheImage" src="/ImgText/FixHeight?sFile=Images%2FUser%2FJulianGuppy%2FMediums%2Fconservatory.jpg&backgroundColour=FFFFFF" alt="" / brackets missing because i cant post an image... even though I dont want to post an image I jsut want to post the markup... sigh Snippet from Controller ImgTextController /// <summary> /// This function fixes the height of the image /// </summary> /// <param name="sFile"></param> /// <param name="alternateText"></param> /// <param name="backgroundColour"></param> /// <returns></returns> [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Get)] public ActionResult FixHeight(string sFile, string alternateText, string backgroundColour) { #region File if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(sFile)) { return new ImgTextResult(); } // MVC specific change to prepend the new directory if (sFile.IndexOf("Content") == -1) { sFile = "~/Content/" + sFile; } // open the file System.Drawing.Image img; try { img = System.Drawing.Image.FromFile(Server.MapPath(sFile)); } catch { img = null; } // did we fail? if (img == null) { return new ImgTextResult(); } #endregion File #region Width // Sort out the width from the image passed to me Int32 nWidth = img.Width; #endregion Width #region Height Int32 nHeight = img.Height; #endregion Height // What is the ideal height given a width of 2100 this should be 1400. var nIdealHeight = (int)(nWidth / 1.40920096852); // So is the actual height of the image already greater than the ideal height? Int32 nSplit; if (nIdealHeight < nHeight) { // Yes, do nothing, well i need to return the iamge... nSplit = 0; } else { // rob wants to not show the white at the top or bottom, so if we were to crop the image how would be do it // 1. Calculate what the width should be If we dont adjust the heigt var newIdealWidth = (int)(nHeight * 1.40920096852); // 2. This newIdealWidth should be smaller than the existing width... so work out the split on that Int32 newSplit = (nWidth - newIdealWidth) / 2; // 3. Now recrop the image using 0-nHeight as the height (i.e. full height) // but crop the sides so that its the correct aspect ration var newRect = new Rectangle(newSplit, 0, newIdealWidth, nHeight); img = CropImage(img, newRect); nHeight = img.Height; nWidth = img.Width; nSplit = 0; } // No, so I want to place this image on a larger canvas and we do this by Creating a new image to be the size that we want System.Drawing.Image canvas = new Bitmap(nWidth, nIdealHeight, PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(canvas); #region Color // Whilst we can set the background colour we shall default to white if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(backgroundColour)) { backgroundColour = "FFFFFF"; } Color bc = ColorTranslator.FromHtml("#" + backgroundColour); #endregion Color // Filling the background (which gives us our broder) Brush backgroundBrush = new SolidBrush(bc); g.FillRectangle(backgroundBrush, -1, -1, nWidth + 1, nIdealHeight + 1); // draw the image at the position var rect = new Rectangle(0, nSplit, nWidth, nHeight); g.DrawImage(img, rect); return new ImgTextResult { Image = canvas, ImageFormat = ImageFormat.Png }; } My ImgTextResult is a class that returns an Action result for me but embedding the image from a memory stream into the response.outputstream. snippet from my ImageResults /// <summary> /// Execute the result /// </summary> /// <param name="context"></param> public override void ExecuteResult(ControllerContext context) { // output context.HttpContext.Response.Clear(); context.HttpContext.Response.ContentType = "image/png"; try { var memStream = new MemoryStream(); Image.Save(memStream, ImageFormat.Png); context.HttpContext.Response.BinaryWrite(memStream.ToArray()); context.HttpContext.Response.Flush(); context.HttpContext.Response.Close(); memStream.Dispose(); Image.Dispose(); } catch (Exception ex) { string a = ex.Message; } } Now all of this works locally and lovely, and indeed all of this works on my production server BUT Only for Firefox, Safari, Chrome (and other browsers) IE has a fit and decides that it either wont display the image or it does display the image after approx 154seconds of waiting..... I have made sure my HTML is XHTML compliant, I have made sure I am getting no Routing errors or crashes in my event log on the server.... Now obviously I have been a muppet and have done something wrong... but what I cant fathom is why in development all works fine, and in production all non IE browsers also work fine, but IE 8 using IIS 6.0 production server is having some kind of problem in returning this PNG and I dont have an error to trace... so what I am looking for is guidance as to how I can debug this problem.
