• How do I get Windows 7 wallpaper to display the company logo properly?

  Windows 7 is not displaying our company background properly. Curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. I'm working with a scalable vector graphics (SVG) image that I've exported to the same resolution (pixel dimensions, to be technical) as the desktop, which is 1440x900. I have tried exporting the image as a .png, .jpg, and .bmp. All of these look correct in an image viewing program, such as Windows Photo Viewer and Paint, but when I set the Windows background to these images, curves show pixelation and straight lines are jagged. Reading online, it seems that behind the scenes, Windows is converting the image to a .jpg with low quality compression, which is causing the issue. I've tried setting the image as a background through Internet Explorer, saving it as a .jpg, and putting the file in the Windows photo directory as suggested in some online forums, but none of those solutions have fixed my issue.

• Way to auto resize photos before uploaded to cloud service?

  I love using auto syncing services to have my photos taken with my smartphone stored on a cloud storage service. One problem though is that the photos are uploaded in high resolution and takes up a lot of space on the drive. I wonder if any one knows of a service/strategy to have the auto uploaded photo resized to have it occupy less space when auto stored? That is, without me having to take the photos with lesser quality, I still want photos taken with the highest quality since I may take a photo I really like.

• Convert color photos of documents to good black-and-white images?

  Since I don't have a copier or scanner, I'm using an 8 megapixel camera to copy documents. This works pretty well except they need a lot of processing afterward. I'd like to get from a photo to a bitmap, but using djpeg -grayscale -pnm photo.jpg | pgmtopbm -threshold -value XXX does not work so well, for two reasons: It's hard to guess what XXX should be, and XXX is different for different photos. Illumination varies, and sometimes a single threshold isn't what's right for the image. How can I do better? The ideal solution will be fully automatic command-line program that I can run on Linux. (I have already written a program to remove dark pixels from the edges of images.)

• Using local proxy to specify used NIC on Windows 7?

  I'm running Windows 7 and have 2 NIC installed, both are connected to the Internet (nic#1 LTE, nic#2 DSL). Windows 7 will only allow me to specify a binding order and a metric on which interface to chose but i can't specify this on an application level. My Idea was to use a local proxy server and use the proxy server whenever i want to use nic#2. I tried wingate and free proxy, both applications will let me chose the interface i want to use but this setting seems to have no effect? • Is it possible to change the default scan folder on an Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card

  By default Eye-Fi cards scan the DCIM folder (and subfolders) used by most digital cameras for new images to upload. Is there a way of changing this to a different folder? In my particular case I'm using a Kodak photo scanner (P461) that uses a PHOTO(N) folder format to store the scanned images, as far as I know the device has no configuration interface to alter this setting so that doesn't seem to be an option. This topic on the Eye-Fi forums is the closest I've come to a solution, but a perfunctory investigation of Disk Probe doesn't make it obvious what needs to be modified on the card.

• What does Libre Office do to an existing Excel sheet to bloat its size?

  I try to avoid using Libre Office on existing Excel created workbooks because of the potential for unpleasant results. In this case Libre Office bloated the size of the workbook for some reason unknown to me. I would like to know if Libre Office does this to all Excel workbooks or just something in that workbook that causes it. Software involved: Microsoft Office Excel 2010 Libre Office 3.5.x (exact version unknown) Dropbox (merely to sync changes) Platforms involved: Office on Windows (master of the obvious on that one I suppose..) Libre Office on Mac OS 10.6 Types of data stored in this workbook: Text Integers 1 column with a simple formula spanning the entire worksheet representing that particular row (=CONCATENATE(A2285,B2285,D2285), =CONCATENATE(A2286,B2286,D2286), etc.) Total of 3,500 plus rows Here is a photo with details described within, but I'll go ahead and explain the photo as well: This screenshot is from Dropbox history of the .xlsx workbook. • /srv/mm/Music (etc) Twonky won't scan here for media

  Is there something special about /srv/mm/ that Twonky server refuses to scan there? I previously had my system set up with all my Music, Video and Photo folders in /srv/mm shared by Samba, miniDLNA etc, with no problems. I came to install Twonky to replace miniDLNA and after two days of tearing my hair out, changing permissions and owners of the directories I ended up making a new directory at /multimedia and moved my Music, Video and Photo folders in there. Twonky then scanned them all straight away with no problems. I'm running Arch Linux (plugapps specifically) on a NAS. The solution is already implemented (moving the directory) I'm just wondering technically why Twonky might have refused to look for my media in the /srv/mm directories.

Unfortunately, I have no possibility to find out the exact order, only relative one like: "hm, this photo was surely taken after this one" and organize them step-by-step by manually changing numbering again and again. • copy files created in one folder to multiple other folders on linux

  I'm looking for a way to copy photos that are uploaded to one folder to many other folders and visa versa. Example: a photo is uploaded to folder 1, it is then copied to folders 2-5. And if a photo is uploaded to folder 2 it is copied to folders 1 and 3-5. I'm running CentOS 5. All of these folders are on the same server. I came across another post on here that talked about incron, but that type of programming is over my head.

  Sometimes when my wife works on photos in Photoshop on her Mac, what she gives me back are all the photos I took, with their .jpg extensions in place, as well as a set of "ghost" files. That is, for every photo, there is an evil twin whose file name is the same ... except that it begins with "._". Also this ghost file are sort of "grayed-out" and don't open when double clicked. I suspect they are hidden files, (I have set windows to show all hidden files) but what find of hidden file -- on that, I'm clueless. I just delete these files and never have a problem with the photo (.jpg) files, but still I'm dying to know; what are they? Thanks

• Android save Checkbox State in ListView with Cursor Adapter

  I cant find a way to save the checkbox state when using a Cursor adapter. Everything else works fine but if i click on a checkbox it is repeated when it is recycled. Ive seen examples using array adapters but because of my lack of experience im finding it hard to translate it into using a cursor adapter. Could someone give me an example of how to go about it.   At last year's UK Umbraco Festival we gave a demo of our alpha version of Allen for Umbraco, at that stage the application only worked on an iPhone and was a very quick prototype to see what people thought.When we returned to our office the next day, we decided if we were going to release Allen for Umbraco into the wild we really should start again from scratch, the main two reasons for this were;First to ensure it was a truly Universal application ( i.e. it can be installed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod ) which looks and behaves differently depending on the device. The second reason was we really wanted the application to be the foundations of more than just image uploading for Umbraco, for this to be the case we ensured the new version was built following proven design patterns and with lots of unit tests so that we can easily extended it.We have lots of plans for future versions of Allen for Umbraco including adding iCloud support to keep all your settings in sync across your multiple Apple devices. We are also working on support for Umbraco 5 which should be release soon.When you download the App and setup your site, make sure you have a look at the Image Resizing settings, by default we have set these to resize your images to 512 pixels wide, however you can choose from a variety of different resizing methods (by Height, Width, Fit within a frame or the full size image).Also, by default when you select a photo you will see that the image is named with it's date and time stamp of when the photograph was taken (or the current date and time if the original date is not stored in your image). If you click on this name you can edit the name of your photo before it is uploaded.Finally, we are really keep to get your feedback, so within the App help section you will find a way to submit Suggestions and if needed, you can send up Support emails from within the App :)We hope you enjoy the first version of Allen for Umbraco and we look forward to bringing you lots of exciting additional functionality in the future!

• New site – and a special offer

  SSAS Compare has a brand new website! The old page was thrown together in the way that most Red Gate labs sites tend to be — as experimental sites for experimental products. We’ve been developing SSAS Compare for a while now, so we decided it was time for something a bit prettier. The new site is mostly the work of Andrew, our marketing manager, who has all sorts of opinions about websites. One of the opinions Andrew has is that his photo should be on every site on the internet, or at least every Red Gate site on the internet, and that’s why his handsome visage now appears on the SSAS Compare page. Well, that isn’t quite true. According to Andrew, people download more software when they have photos of human beings to look at. We want as many people to try SSAS Compare as possible, so we got the team together for an intimate photoshoot directed by Red Gate’s resident recorder of light, Dom Reed (aka Mr Flibble). The photo will appear on the site as soon as Dom is finished photoshopping us into something more palatable, which is a big job. Until then, you’ll have to put up with Andrew. We’ve also used the new site to announce a special offer. Right now, SSAS Compare is still a free beta, but by signing up to our Early Access Program, you’ll get a 20% discount when we release SSAS Compare as a fully-fledged product. • Could not log-in properly but shows no error in joomla

  This is what I did, I added variables in \libraries\joomla\database\table\user.php: var $img_content= null; //contains the blob type data var $img_name = null; var $img_type = null; then I added this code in \components\com_user\controller.php: $file = JRequest::getVar( 'pic', '', 'files', 'array' ); if(isset($file['name'])) { jimport('joomla.filesystem.file'); $fileName = $file['name']; $tmpName = $file['tmp_name']; $fileSize = $file['size']; $fileType = $file['type']; $fp = fopen($tmpName, 'r'); $content = fread($fp, filesize($tmpName)); //$content = addslashes($content); fclose($fp); $user->set('img_name', $fileName); $user->set('img_type', $fileType); $user->set('img_content', $content); } that works fine, but I found this problem in logging in with the new user with an uploaded photo, other user with an empty img_content field could login properly. What happens is when I log-in using the user with uploaded photo, it's not redirecting properly it just return to log-in, but when i log-in through backend using other user which is super admin, i could see that user which appears as logged in. I started saving the images in the database because I am having problem with the directory when I have uploaded the site. I think the log-in was affected by the blob type data in the database. Could that be the problem? What could be the solution? -saeha
