  • change file descriptor for socket in python

    - by Dani
Hello everybody I'm trying to manually create the file descriptor associated with a socket in python and then loaded directly into memory with mmap. Create a file into memory with mmap is simple, but I can not find a way to associate the file with a socket. Anyone know how? thank you very much.

  • Best practice for secure socket connection.

    - by LnDCobra
What is the best practice for a secure socket connection (without SSL). I will be moving sensitive data (logins/passwords/accounts) across TCP Socket connection, and wondering if there is a good/fast way of Encrypting/Decrypting and avoiding malicious injection.

  • What does it mean to flush a socket?

    - by User4748402
I don't really know much about sockets except how to read and write to them as if they were files. I know a little about using socket selectors. I don't get why you have to flush a socket, what's actually happening there? The bits just hang out somewhere in memory until they get pushed off? I read some things online about sockets, but it's all very abstract and high level. What's actually happening here?

  • Receiving Multicast Messages on a Multihomed Windows PC

    - by Basti
I'm developing a diagnostic tool on a PC with several Network Interfaces based on multicast/udp. The user can select a NIC, the application creates sockets, binds them to this NIC and adds them to the specific multicast group. The sending of multicast messages works fine. However receiving of messages only succeeds if I bind the sockets to a specific NIC of my PC. It almost looks like as there is a 'default' NIC for receiving multicast messages in Windows which is always the first NIC returned by the GetAdapterInfo function. I monitored the network with Wireshark and discovered that the "IGMP Join Group" message isn't sent from the NIC I bound the socket at, but by this 'default' NIC. If I disable this NIC (or remove the network cable), the next NIC of the list returned by GetAdapterInfo is used for receiving multicast messages. I was successful to change this 'default' NIC by adding an additional entry to the routing table of my PC, but I don't think this is a good solution of the problem. The problem also occurs with the code appended below. The join group messages isn't sent via 192.168.52 but via a different NIC. // socket_tst.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // #include tchar.h #include winsock2.h #include ws2ipdef.h #include IpHlpApi.h #include IpTypes.h #include stdio.h int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { WSADATA m_wsaData; SOCKET m_socket; sockaddr_in m_sockAdr; UINT16 m_port = 319; u_long m_interfaceAdr = inet_addr("192.168.1.52"); u_long m_multicastAdr = inet_addr("224.0.0.107"); int returnValue = WSAStartup(MAKEWORD(2,2), &m_wsaData); if (returnValue != S_OK) { return returnValue; } // Create sockets if (INVALID_SOCKET == (m_socket = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, IPPROTO_UDP)) ) { return WSAGetLastError(); } int doreuseaddress = TRUE; if (setsockopt(m_socket,SOL_SOCKET,SO_REUSEADDR,(char*) &doreuseaddress, sizeof(doreuseaddress)) == SOCKET_ERROR) { return WSAGetLastError(); } // Configure socket addresses memset(&m_sockAdr,0,sizeof(m_sockAdr)); m_sockAdr.sin_family = AF_INET; m_sockAdr.sin_port = htons(m_port); m_sockAdr.sin_addr.s_addr = m_interfaceAdr; //bind sockets if ( bind( m_socket, (SOCKADDR*) &m_sockAdr, sizeof(m_sockAdr) ) == SOCKET_ERROR ) { return WSAGetLastError(); } // join multicast struct ip_mreq_source imr; memset(&imr,0,sizeof(imr)); imr.imr_multiaddr.s_addr = m_multicastAdr; // address of multicastgroup imr.imr_sourceaddr.s_addr = 0; // sourceaddress (not used) imr.imr_interface.s_addr = m_interfaceAdr; // interface address /* first join multicast group, then registerer selected interface as * multicast sending interface */ if( setsockopt( m_socket ,IPPROTO_IP ,IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP ,(char*) &imr , sizeof(imr)) == SOCKET_ERROR) { return SOCKET_ERROR; } else { if( setsockopt(m_socket ,IPPROTO_IP ,IP_MULTICAST_IF ,(CHAR*)&imr.imr_interface.s_addr ,sizeof(&imr.imr_interface.s_addr)) == SOCKET_ERROR ) { return SOCKET_ERROR; } } printf("receiving msgs...\n"); while(1) { // get inputbuffer from socket int sock_return = SOCKET_ERROR; sockaddr_in socketAddress; char buffer[1500]; int addressLength = sizeof(socketAddress); sock_return = recvfrom(m_socket, (char*) &buffer, 1500, 0, (SOCKADDR*)&socketAddress, &addressLength ); if( sock_return == SOCKET_ERROR) { int wsa_error = WSAGetLastError(); return wsa_error; } else { printf("got message!\n"); } } return 0; } Thanks four your help!

  • Socket(TCPIP) Unstable

    - by Lee Kwan Wee
I have a setup of a SCPI server in a Win7 PC and have 2 other programs talking to it locally(127.0.0.1) over TCPIP socket 5025 and 5029. This worked well and stable in a fresh PC, but when we moved it into our production lines and the IT dept added their policies and stuff, it became unstable. The PC is connected to the production floor server but both of the programs are running locally in the PC. The connection tends to be disconnected when there is an idle period. And it takes 5-6times to refreshing the connection to get it back. I'm not a programmer myself, so I'm hoping to see if anyone here can help with some answers. Thank you very much!! Regards, KwanWee.

  • Debian and Multipath IO problem

    - by tearman
Basically the situation is, I have a box running Debian, the box internally has an Intel SCSI RAID controller which is controlling 2 hard drives in RAID1 mode which is where the OS is installed. Further, I have a QLogic fiber channel adapter that connects the unit to a Fiber Channel SAN. My process of installation is I'll install Debian to the local drives, and leave the QLogic firmware out of it for the time being. Then once I get the unit online, I'll install the firmware drivers. This flops my internal drives from /dev/sda to /dev/sdc, which is a bit annoying, but recoverable. Probably should address these by UUID anyways. Once I get back online, I have to install multipath-tools (the framework is a multipath framework). However, once I reboot the machine again, it fails on boot after discovering multipath targets, saying my local drives are busy and cannot be mounted to /root. Any help in what may be the problem here? Or at least how to disable multipath until after the unit boots and then ignores the internal drives?

  • MySQL is killing the server IO.

    - by OneOfOne
I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached. • Raw socket sendto() failure in OS X

    - by user37278
When I open a raw socket is OS X, construct my own udp packet (headers and data), and call sendto(), I get the error "Invalid Argument". Here is a sample program "rawudp.c" from the web site http://www.tenouk.com/Module43a.html that demonstrates this problem. The program (after adding string and stdlib #includes) runs under Fedora 10 but fails with "Invalid Argument" under OS X. Can anyone suggest why this fails in OS X? I have looked and looked and looked at the sendto() call, but all the parameters look good. I'm running the code as root, etc. Is there perhaps a kernel setting that prevents even uid 0 executables from sending packets through raw sockets in OS X Snow Leopard? Thanks.

  • Rails: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock'

    - by misbehavens
So I've got a Ruby on Rails application that I am trying to run (in development) on Snow Leopard. I've got it working on my Ubuntu computer, but now I need to get my Snow Leopard environment set up. Originally, I installed the MySQL 2.8.1 Ruby Gem and was running into this issue: uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes But thanks to this tutorial I was able to resolve it by running this command and installing a previous version of the Gem: export ARCHFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" ;sudo gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri -v=2.7 mysql -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config Now that I've resolved that issue, I'm running into a different error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' This happens when I try to run rake db:migrate as well as when the server is running. How can I resolve this issue?

  • Kernel oops on Linux running in VirtualBox breaks some IO-related functionality on the server

    - by Kristoffer E
    We are having problems with CentOS release 6.3 running in VirtualBox on Windows 7 machines. The symptoms are the following: Everything works as normal for several hours, even days. Then something happens which breaks the system. What we still can do after this something happens: Access the web server Use existing SSH sessions to run top and free What does not work: Starting new SSH sessions (hangs after username and password is entered) Running ls in existing SSH sessions (hangs) SSI includes from our web servers that fetch data from remote machines probably more What we see on the server when this something happens is the following: Load average go from basically nothing to around 3 CPU usage is still low (5%) Disk activity is low (running iostat) Plenty of memory available Plenty of disk space available In /var/log/messages we get the following: Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: e1000 0000:00:03.0: eth0: Detected Tx Unit Hang Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: Tx Queue <0> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: TDH <2e> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: TDT <30> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: next_to_use <30> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: next_to_clean <2e> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: buffer_info[next_to_clean] Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: time_stamp <1038284db> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: next_to_watch <2f> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: jiffies <103828b42> Jun 14 01:10:48 devvm kernel: next_to_watch.status <0> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: e1000 0000:00:03.0: eth0: Detected Tx Unit Hang Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: Tx Queue <0> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: TDH <2e> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: TDT <30> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: next_to_use <30> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: next_to_clean <2e> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: buffer_info[next_to_clean] Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: time_stamp <1038284db> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: next_to_watch <2f> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: jiffies <103829312> Jun 14 01:10:50 devvm kernel: next_to_watch.status <0> Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------ Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: WARNING: at net/sched/sch_generic.c:261 dev_watchdog+0x26d/0x280() (Not tainted) Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: Hardware name: VirtualBox Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (e1000): transmit queue 0 timed out Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: Modules linked in: vboxsf(U) ipv6 ppdev parport_pc parport microcode sg vboxguest(U) i2c_piix4 i2c_core e1000 snd_intel8x0 snd_ac97_codec ac97_bus snd_seq snd_seq_device snd_pcm snd_timer snd soundcore snd_page_alloc pcnet32 mii ext4 mbcache jbd2 sd_mod crc_t10dif ahci dm_mirror dm_region_hash dm_log dm_mod [last unloaded: scsi_wait_scan] Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: Pid: 0, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.32-279.el6.x86_64 #1 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: Call Trace: Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: <IRQ> [<ffffffff8106b747>] ? warn_slowpath_common+0x87/0xc0 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8106b836>] ? warn_slowpath_fmt+0x46/0x50 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff814595fd>] ? dev_watchdog+0x26d/0x280 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81099138>] ? sched_clock_cpu+0xb8/0x110 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81459390>] ? dev_watchdog+0x0/0x280 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8107e897>] ? run_timer_softirq+0x197/0x340 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff810a21c0>] ? tick_sched_timer+0x0/0xc0 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8102b40d>] ? lapic_next_event+0x1d/0x30 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81073ec1>] ? __do_softirq+0xc1/0x1e0 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81096c50>] ? hrtimer_interrupt+0x140/0x250 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8100c24c>] ? call_softirq+0x1c/0x30 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8100de85>] ? do_softirq+0x65/0xa0 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81073ca5>] ? irq_exit+0x85/0x90 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81505be0>] ? smp_apic_timer_interrupt+0x70/0x9b Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff8100bc13>] ? apic_timer_interrupt+0x13/0x20 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: <EOI> [<ffffffff810387cb>] ? native_safe_halt+0xb/0x10 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff810149cd>] ? default_idle+0x4d/0xb0 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81009e06>] ? cpu_idle+0xb6/0x110 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff814e433a>] ? rest_init+0x7a/0x80 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81c21f7b>] ? start_kernel+0x424/0x430 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81c2133a>] ? x86_64_start_reservations+0x125/0x129 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: [<ffffffff81c21438>] ? x86_64_start_kernel+0xfa/0x109 Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: ---[ end trace 2c7bb984812cf120 ]--- Jun 14 01:10:52 devvm kernel: e1000 0000:00:03.0: eth0: Reset adapter Jun 14 01:10:53 devvm abrtd: Directory 'oops-2013-06-14-01:10:53-1537-0' creation detected Jun 14 01:10:53 devvm abrt-dump-oops: Reported 1 kernel oopses to Abrt Jun 14 01:10:53 devvm abrtd: Can't open file '/var/spool/abrt/oops-2013-06-14-01:10:53-1537-0/uid': No such file or directory Jun 14 01:10:55 devvm kernel: Bridge firewalling registered After this we see for a while, every two minutes: Jun 14 01:14:22 devvm kernel: INFO: task events/0:19 blocked for more than 120 seconds.   • How to select a server that supports Windows scheduled file IO

    - by Kristof Verbiest
Background: I am developing an application that needs to read data from disk with a fairly consistent throughput. It is important that this throughput is not influenced by other actions that happen on the disk (e.g. by other processes). For this purpose, I was hoping to use the 'Scheduled File I/O' feature in Windows (throught the GetFileBandwithReservation and SetFileBandwithReservation functions). However, this StackOverflow question has thought me that this feature is only available if the device driver supports it. Currently I have no computer at my disposition that seems to support this feature (I have an HP Proliant server and a Dell Precision workstation). Question: If I were to order a new server, how can I know beforehand if this feature will be supported by the device driver? How 'upscale' does the server have to be? Has anybody used this feature with success and cares to share his experiences?

  • Disk IO causing high load on Xen/CentOS guest

    - by Peter Lindqvist
I'm having serious issues with a xen based server, this is on the guest partition. It's a paravirtualized CentOS 5.5. The following numbers are taken from top while copying a large file over the network. If i copy the file another time the speed decreases in relation to load average. So the second time it's half the speed of the first time. It needs some time to cool off after this. Load average slowly decreases until it's once again usable. ls / takes about 30 seconds. top - 13:26:44 up 13 days, 21:44, 2 users, load average: 7.03, 5.08, 3.15 Tasks: 134 total, 2 running, 132 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 25.3%id, 74.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.1%st Mem: 1048752k total, 1041460k used, 7292k free, 3116k buffers Swap: 2129912k total, 40k used, 2129872k free, 904740k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1506 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:03.94 cifsd 1 root 15 0 2172 644 556 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.08 init Meanwhile the host is ~0.5 load avg and steady over time. ~50% wait Server hardware is dual xeon, 3gb ram, 170gb scsi 320 10k rpm, and shouldn't have any problems with copying files over the network. disk = [ "tap:aio:/vm/dev01.img,xvda,w" ] I also get these in the log INFO: task syslogd:1350 blocked for more than 120 seconds. • BT socket Device over Structured Cabling

    - by TheD
Not sure if this is the right stack* site to post on but I believe cabling is a just subject. Essentially I have a Credit Card machine which is connected to a phone line via standard BT Socket. So basically, the port of the wall has a balun plugged in which takes the RJ45 outlet on the wall to BT, so I can plug the device in. This works fine, however I need the machine to be on the other side of the room so want to route it through my patch panel (strucutered cabling). How can this be done? So Device -- ? -- RJ45 port -- Patch Panel -- ? -- Balun out wall outlet Where ? is to be filled in ! :)

  • Unix domain socket firewall

    - by lagab
Hello, everyone. I've got a problem with my debian server. Probably there is some vulnerable script at my web-serser, which is running from www-data user. I also have samba with winbind installed, and samba is joined to windows domain. So, probably this vulnerable script allows hacker to bruteforce out domain controller through winbind unix domain socket. Actually I have lots of such lines at netstat -a output: unix 3 [ ] STREAM CONNECTED 509027 /var/run/samba/winbindd_privileged/pipe And our DC logs contain lots of recorded authentication attems from root or guest accounts. How can I restrict my apaches access to winbind? I had an idea to use some kind of firewall for IPC sockets. Is it possible?

  • Do large folder sizes slow down IO performance?

    - by Aaron
We have a Linux server process that writes a few thousand files to a directory, deletes the files, and then writes a few thousand more files to the same directory without deleting the directory. What I'm starting to see is that the process doing the writing is getting slower and slower. My question is this: The directory size of the folder has grown from 4096 to over 200000 as see by this output of ls -l. root@ad57rs0b# ls -l 15000PN5AIA3I6_B total 232 drwxr-xr-x 2 chef chef 233472 May 30 21:35 barcodes On ext3, can these large directory sizes slow down performance? Thanks. Aaron

  • How to tell if linux disk IO is causing excessive (> 1 second) application stalls

    - by noahz
I have a Java application performing a large volume (hundreds of MB) of continuous output (streaming plain text) to about a dozen files a ext3 SAN filesystem. Occasionally, this application pauses for several seconds at a time. I suspect that something related to ext3 vsfs (Veritas Filesystem) functionality (and/or how it interacts with the OS) is the culprit. What steps can I take to confirm or refute this theory? I am aware of iostat and /proc/diskstats as starting points. Revised title to de-emphasize journaling and emphasize "stalls" I have done some googling and found at least one article that seems to describe behavior like I am observing: Solving the ext3 latency problem Additional Information Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga) Kernel: 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5 Primary application disk is fiber-channel SAN: lspci | grep -i fibre 14:00.0 Fibre Channel: Emulex Corporation Saturn-X: LightPulse Fibre Channel Host Adapter (rev 03) Mount info: type vxfs (rw,tmplog, largefiles, mincache=tmpcache, ioerror=mwdisable) 0 0 cat /sys/block/VxVM123456/queue/scheduler noop anticipatory [deadline] cfq

  • Why is domU faster than dom0 on IO?

    - by Paco
I have installed debian 7 on a physical machine. This is the configuration of the machine: 3 hard drives using RAID 5 Strip element size: 1M Read policy: Adaptive read ahead Write policy: Write Through /boot 200 MB ext2 / 15 GB ext3 SWAP 10GB LVM rest (~500GB) emphasized text I installed postgresql, created a big database (over 1GB). I have an SQL request that takes a lot of time to run (a SELECT statement, so it only reads data from the database). This request takes approximately 5.5 seconds to run. Then, I installed XEN, created a domU, with another debian distro. On this OS, I also installed postgresql, with the same database. The same SQL request takes only 2.5 seconds to run. I checked the kernel on both dom0 and domU. uname-a returns "Linux debian 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.41-2+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux" on both systems. I checked the kernel parameters, which are approximately the same. For those that are relevant, I changed their values to make them match on both systems using sysctl. I saw no changes (the requests still take the same amount of time). After this, I checked the file systems. I used ext3 on domU. Still no changes. I installed hdparm, and ran hdparm -Tt on both systems, on all my partitions on both systems, and I get similar results. Now, I am stuck, I don't know what is different, and what could be the cause of such a big difference. Additional Info: Debian runs on a Dell server PowerEdge 2950 postgresql: 9.1.9 (both dom0 and domU) xen-linux-system: 3.2.0 xen-hypervisor: 4.1 Thanks EDIT: As Krzysztof Ksiezyk suggested, it might be due to some file caching system. I ran the dd command to test both the read and write speed. Here is domU: root@test1:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/dd count=5MB bs=1MB ^C2020+0 records in 2020+0 records out 2020000000 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 18.8289 s, 107 MB/s root@test1:~# dd if=/root/dd of=/dev/null count=5MB bs=1MB 2020+0 records in 2020+0 records out 2020000000 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 15.0549 s, 134 MB/s And here is dom0: root@debian:~# dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/dd count=5MB bs=1MB ^C1693+0 records in 1693+0 records out 1693000000 bytes (1.7 GB) copied, 8.87281 s, 191 MB/s root@debian:~# dd if=/root/dd of=/dev/null count=5MB bs=1MB 1693+0 records in 1693+0 records out 1693000000 bytes (1.7 GB) copied, 0.501509 s, 3.4 GB/s What can be the cause of this caching system? And how can we "fix" it? Can we apply it to dom0? EDIT 2: I switched my virtual disk type. To do so I followed this article. I did a dd if=/dev/vg0/test1-disk of=/mnt/test1-disk.img bs=16M Then in /etc/xen/test1.cfg, I changed the disk parameter to use file: instead of phy: it should have removed the file caching, but I still get the same numbers (domU being much faster for Postgres)

  • Sudden slow read & write speed on all IO

    - by user23392
I have a custom built rig that has 2 storage drives. for OS: Western Digital 1.0TB HARD DR 64MB for other stuff: Corsair Performance 3 128GB (SSD) [ expected read speed: 400 mb/s ] The system was incredibly fast for a couple of months, then one day i was playing a game then it started to get buggy (some sounds and objects disappearing), i stopped the game and the system seemed to be unstable so i had to shut it down, next morning i couldn't start it up, it was saying something about corrupt device. I formatted both disks and installed a fresh copy of windows, all i can say that since that day the system was never like before, it takes 10 minutes to boot up (the icons and desktop slowly appear). but once it's done the slowness isn't as noticeable. Here's my benchmark on the HDD ( read speed - write speed ): And the SSD: Anyone knows what could be the issue?

  • SocketChannel in Java sends data, but it doesn't get to destination application

    - by Peterson
Hi Everybody, I'm suffering a lot to create a simple ChatServer in Java, using the NIO libraries. Wonder if someone could help me. I am doing that by using SocketChannel and Selector to handle multiple clients in a single thread. The problem is: I am able to accept new connections and get it's data, but when I try to send data back, the SocketChannel simply doesn't work. In the method write(), it returns a integer that is the same size of the data i'm passing to it, but the client never receives that data. Strangely, when I close the server application, the client receives the data. It's like the socketchannel maintains a buffer, and it only get flushed when I close the application. Here are some more details, to give you more information to help. I'm handling the events in this piece of code: private void run() throws IOException { ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); // Set it to non-blocking, so we can use select ssc.configureBlocking( false ); // Get the Socket connected to this channel, and bind it // to the listening port this.serverSocket = ssc.socket(); InetSocketAddress isa = new InetSocketAddress( this.port ); serverSocket.bind( isa ); // Create a new Selector for selecting this.masterSelector = Selector.open(); // Register the ServerSocketChannel, so we can // listen for incoming connections ssc.register( masterSelector, SelectionKey.OP_ACCEPT ); while (true) { // See if we've had any activity -- either // an incoming connection, or incoming data on an // existing connection int num = masterSelector.select(); // If we don't have any activity, loop around and wait // again if (num == 0) { continue; } // Get the keys corresponding to the activity // that has been detected, and process them // one by one Set keys = masterSelector.selectedKeys(); Iterator it = keys.iterator(); while (it.hasNext()) { // Get a key representing one of bits of I/O // activity SelectionKey key = (SelectionKey)it.next(); // What kind of activity is it? if ((key.readyOps() & SelectionKey.OP_ACCEPT) == SelectionKey.OP_ACCEPT) { // Aceita a conexão Socket s = serverSocket.accept(); System.out.println( "LOG: Conexao TCP aceita de " + s.getInetAddress() + ":" + s.getPort() ); // Make sure to make it non-blocking, so we can // use a selector on it. SocketChannel sc = s.getChannel(); sc.configureBlocking( false ); // Registra a conexao no seletor, apenas para leitura sc.register( masterSelector, SelectionKey.OP_READ ); } else if ( key.isReadable() ) { SocketChannel sc = null; // It's incoming data on a connection, so // process it sc = (SocketChannel)key.channel(); // Verifica se a conexão corresponde a um cliente já existente if((clientsMap.getClient(key)) != null){ boolean closedConnection = !processIncomingClientData(key); if(closedConnection){ int id = clientsMap.getClient(key); closeClient(id); } } else { boolean clientAccepted = processIncomingDataFromNewClient(key); if(!clientAccepted){ // Se o cliente não foi aceito, sua conexão é simplesmente fechada sc.socket().close(); sc.close(); key.cancel(); } } } } // We remove the selected keys, because we've dealt // with them. keys.clear(); } } This piece of code is simply handles new clients that wants to connect to the chat. So, a client makes a TCP connection to the server, and once it gets accepted, it sends data to the server following a simply text protocol, informing his id and asking to get registrated to the server. I handle this in the method processIncomingDataFromNewClient(key). I'm also keeping a map of clients and its connections in a data structure similar to a hashtable. I? doing that because I need to recover a client Id from a connection and a connection from a client Id. This is can be shown in: clientsMap.getClient(key). But the problem itself resides in the method processIncomingDataFromNewClient(key). There, I simply read the data that the client sent to me, validate it, and if it's ok, I send a message back to the client to tell that it is connected to the chat server. Here is a similar piece of code: private boolean processIncomingDataFromNewClient(SelectionKey key){ SocketChannel sc = (SocketChannel) key.channel(); String connectionOrigin = sc.socket().getInetAddress() + ":" + sc.socket().getPort(); int id = 0; //id of the client buf.clear(); int bytesRead = 0; try { bytesRead = sc.read(buf); if(bytesRead<=0){ System.out.println("Conexão fechada pelo: " + connectionOrigin); return false; } System.out.println("LOG: " + bytesRead + " bytes lidos de " + connectionOrigin); String msg = new String(buf.array(),0,bytesRead); // Do validations with the client sent me here // gets the client id }catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); System.out.println("LOG: Oops. Cliente não conhece o protocolo. Fechando a conexão: " + connectionOrigin); System.out.println("LOG: Primeiros 10 caracteres enviados pelo cliente: " + msg); return false; } } } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("LOG: Erro ao ler dados da conexao: " + connectionOrigin); System.out.println("LOG: "+ e.getLocalizedMessage()); System.out.println("LOG: Fechando a conexão..."); return false; } // If it gets to here, the protocol is ok and we can add the client boolean inserted = clientsMap.addClient(key, id); if(!inserted){ System.out.println("LOG: Não foi possível adicionar o cliente. Ou ele já está conectado ou já têm clientes demais. Id: " + id); System.out.println("LOG: Fechando a conexão: " + connectionOrigin); return false; } System.out.println("LOG: Novo cliente conectado! Enviando mesnsagem de confirmação. Id: " + id + " Conexao: " + connectionOrigin); /* Here is the error */ sendMessage(id, "Servidor pet: connection accepted"); System.out.println("LOG: Novo cliente conectado! Id: " + id + " Conexao: " + connectionOrigin); return true; } And finally, the method sendMessage(SelectionKey key) looks like this: private void sendMessage(int destId, String msg) { Charset charset = Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1"); CharBuffer charBuffer = CharBuffer.wrap(msg, 0, msg.length()); ByteBuffer bf = charset.encode(charBuffer); //bf.flip(); int bytesSent = 0; SelectionKey key = clientsMap.getClient(destId); SocketChannel sc = (SocketChannel) key.channel(); try { / int total_bytes_sent = 0; while(total_bytes_sent < msg.length()){ bytesSent = sc.write(bf); total_bytes_sent += bytesSent; } System.out.println("LOG: Bytes enviados para o cliente " + destId + ": "+ total_bytes_sent + " Tamanho da mensagem: " + msg.length()); } catch (IOException e) { System.out.println("LOG: Erro ao mandar mensagem para: " + destId); System.out.println("LOG: " + e.getLocalizedMessage()); } } So, what is happening is that the server, when send a message, prints something like this: LOG: Bytes sent to the client: 28 Size of the message: 28 So, it tells that it sent the data, but the chat client keeps blocking, waiting in the recv() method. So, the data never gets to it. When I close the server application, though, all the data appears in the client. I wonder why. It is important to say that the client is in C and the server JAVA, and I'm running both in the same machine, an Ubuntu Guest in virtualbox under windows. I also run both under windows host and under linuxes hosts, and keep getting the same strange problem. I'm sorry for the great lenght of this question, but I already searched a lot of places for an answer, found a lot of tutorials and questions, including here at StackOverflow, but coundn't find a reasonable explanation. I am really not liking this Java NIO, and i saw a lot of people complaining about it too. I am thinking that if I had done that in C it would have been a lot easier :-D So, if someone could help me and even discuss this behavor, it would be great! :-) Thanks everybody in advance, Péterson

  • Sockets and multithreading

    - by V0idExp
Hi to all! I have an interesting (to me) problem... There are two threads, one for capturing data from std input and sending it through socket to server, and another one which receives data from blocking socket. So, when there's no reply from server, recv() call waits indefenitely, right? But instead of blocking only its calling thread, it blocks the overall process! Why this thing occurs?

  • Installing mysql on leopard: "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket"

    - by Neil
I migrated to a new machine and used migration assistant to copy across my files (which seemed to copy across the DBs) but I had to use macports to install Mysql (whereas last time I compiled from source via Dan Benjamin's guide). For some reason, mysql is intermittently throwing the following error; Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) It does this no matter what I try, which has included setting the socket in /opt/local/etc/mysql5/my.cnf. Previously I've managed to temporarily fix this by restarting the machine, but right now it just doesn't want to know, despite grep mysql telling me I seem to have a pid; 0 46 1 0 0:00.01 ?? 0:00.01 /opt/local/bin/daemondo --label=mysql5 --start-cmd /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper start ; --stop-cmd /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper stop ; --restart-cmd /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper restart ; --pid=none 0 70 1 0 0:00.01 ?? 0:00.01 /bin/sh /opt/local/lib/mysql5/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir=/opt/local/var/db/mysql5 --pid-file=/opt/local/var/db/mysql5/localhost.pid 74 100 70 0 0:09.22 ?? 1:02.68 /opt/local/libexec/mysqld --basedir=/opt/local --datadir=/opt/local/var/db/mysql5 --user=mysql --pid-file=/opt/local/var/db/mysql5/localhost.pid --socket=/tmp/mysql.sock 501 66217 65266 0 0:00.00 ttys001 0:00.00 grep mysql How do I fix this? Are there any steps I can take next? I've been trying for a few weeks now and I've read round all relevant blog posts, so I'm completely out of ideas.
