• Is there an Objective-C algorithm like `transform` of the C++ STL?

  My goal is to have an array that contains all filenames of a specific extension, but without the extension. There's an elegant solution to get all filenames of a specific extension using a predicate filter and instructions on how to split a path into filename and extension, but to combine them I would have to write a loop (not terrible, but not elegant either). Is there a way with Objective-C (may be similar to the predicate mechanism) to apply some function to every element of an array and put the results in a second array, like the transform algorithm of the C++ STL does?

• Using vim, how do you quickly refresh a web page you're working on?

  I've been using VIM for a few weeks now while messing with various web languages and I'm really enjoying it. I find it cumbersome having to tab or click into my browser and refresh the page to see the effect of a code change. It's even more annoying as I'm using Virtual Box and I tend to be working from PDF files on the host system so I have limited window space. Do you gurus have any fancy ways of doing this? I was wondering if it's possible to split the VIM workspace and have links/lynx in a window of its own or something to that effect?

• Are AJAX calls to a sub-domain considered Cross Site Scripting?

  I have Server A (www.example.com) sending information to Server B. I can only have HTML / JS on Server A (and have to do the "crunching" on Server B) so I'm trying to send form data via AJAX (trying to avoid a form post to Server B - don't ask). Obviously doing an AJAX call cross-domain is considered XSS and a big no-no, but if I were to put Server B in a subdomain (sub.example.com), would that be considered okay? How are cross-domain errors detected? Does the browser look up DNS records? IP address? Thanks in advance for you help.

  I'm a person that learns best from example. Currently, I'm diving into the field of Web Development after fifteen years of developing desktop apps. I'm still getting used to all the web technologies used for developing modern web sites and everywhere I look, I see cool little UI elements and question how they're implemented. So I thought I'd ask you, the web experts...the wexperts :) What are some straight forward or creative ways you could code this grid-breaking arrow... The basic layout for this page looks like... What would the html/css code look like? Would you split the image into multiple images or could you use a single image? I'm sure this is a really simple concept and it completely boggles me. • Add time to a Date object in javascript

  I am trying to add time to a Date object in javascript but am not getting the results that I am expecting. I am trying to pull a timer off of the page and add it to the current time to get the unix timestamp value of when the timer will hit zero. The time on the page is displayed as " HH:MM:SS ". This is what I have: time=getTimerText.split(":"); seconds=(time[0]*3600+time[1]*60+time[2])*1000; to convert the time into milliseconds. fDate=new Date(); fDate.setTime(fDate.getTime()+seconds); add the milliseconds to the javascript timestamp alert(Math.round(fDate.getTime() / 1000)); convert the javascript timestamp to a unix timestamp Since the timer is counting down I should get the same result every time i run the script, but I don't. Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong here?

• Return segmented average from SQL Query?

  Hi, I measure the load on DNS servers every minute and store that into an SQL DB. I want to draw a chart of the load for the last 48 hours. That's 69120 (48*24*60) data points but my chart's only 800 pixels wide so to make things faster I would like my SQL query to return only ~800 data points. It's seems to me like a pretty standard thing to do, but I've been searching the web and in books for such a thing for a while now and the closest I was able to find was a rolling average. What I'm looking for a more of a "segmented average": divide the 69120 data points in ~800 segments, then average each segment. My SQL table is: CREATE TABLE measurements ( ip int, measurement_time int, queries int, query_time float ) My query looks like this SELECT ip, queries FROM measurements WHERE measurement_time>(time()-172800) Thanks a lot!

• Parallelism on two duo-core processor system

  I wrote a Java program that draw the Mandelbrot image. To make it interesting, I divided the for loop that calculates the color of each pixel into 2 halves; each half will be executed as a thread thus parallelizing the task. On a two core one cpu system, the performance of using two thread approach vs just one main thread is nearly two fold. My question is on a two dual-core processor system, will the parallelized task be split among different processor instead of just utilize the two core on one processor? I suppose the former scenario will be slower than the latter one simply because the latency of communicating between 2 CPU over the motherboard wires. Any ideas? Thanks

• Highly efficient filesystem APIs for certain kinds of operations

  I occasionally find myself needing certain filesystem APIs which could be implemented very efficiently if supported by the filesystem, but I've never heard of them. For example: Truncate file from the beginning, on an allocation unit boundary Split file into two on an allocation unit boundary Insert or remove a chunk from the middle of the file, again, on an allocation unit boundary The only way that I know of to do things like these is to rewrite the data into a new file. This has the benefit that the allocation unit is no longer relevant, but is extremely slow in comparison to some low-level filesystem magic. I understand that the alignment requirements mean that the methods aren't always applicable, but I think they can still be useful. For example, a file archiver may be able to trim down the archive very efficiently after the user deletes a file from the archive, even if that leaves a small amount of garbage either side for alignment reasons. Is it really the case that such APIs don't exist, or am I simply not aware of them? I am mostly interested in NTFS, but hearing about other filesystems will be interesting too.

• In Perl, can I limit the length of a line as I read it in from a file (like fgets)

  I'm trying to write a piece of code that reads a file line by line and stores each line, up to a certain amount of input data. I want to guard against the end-user being evil and putting something like a gig of data on one line in addition to guarding against sucking in an abnormally large file. Doing $str = <FILE> will still read in a whole line, and that could be very long and blow up my memory. fgets lets me do this by letting me specify a number of bytes to read during each call and essentially letting me split one long line into my max length. Is there a similar way to do this in perl? I saw something about sv_gets but am not sure how to use it (though I only did a cursory Google search). Thanks.

  I'm starting with the two values below: finalString = "38,05,e1,5f,aa,5f,aa,d0"; string[] holder = finalString.Split(','); I'm looping thru holder like so: foreach (string item in holder) { //concatenate 0x and add the value to a byte array } On each iteration I would like to concatenate a 0x to make it a hex value and add it to a byte array. This is what I want the byte array to be like when I finish the loop: byte[] c = new byte[]{0x38,0x05,0xe1,0x5f,0xaa,0x5f,0xaa,0xd0}; So far all my attempts have not been successful.   Hello everyone, I'm working with a db (SQL server 2008), and have an interesting issue with times stored in the db. The DBA who originally set it up was crafty and stored scheduled times as smallints in 12-hour form-- 6:00AM would be represented as 600. I've figured out how to split them into hours and minutes like thus: select floor(time/100) as hr, right(time, 2) as min from table; What I want to do is compare these scheduled times to actual times, which are stored in the proper datetime format. Ideally, I would do this with two datetime fields and use datediff() between them, but this would require converting the smallint time into a datetime, which I can't figure out. Does anyone have suggestions on how to do this? Thanks in advance.

  I'm working on a spoj problem, INTEST. The goal is to specify the number of test cases (n) and a divisor (k), then feed your program n numbers. The program will accept each number on a newline of stdin and after receiving the nth number, will tell you how many were divisible by k. The only challenge in this problem is getting your code to be FAST because it k can be anything up to 10^7 and the test cases can be as high as 10^9. I'm trying to write it in python and having trouble speeding it up.   Given this MSDN article, we learn that the Common Type System in .Net has this classification of reference types: "Reference types can be self-describing types, pointer types, or interface types. The type of a reference type can be determined from values of self-describing types. Self-describing types are further split into arrays and class types." So an array, for instance, is a self-describing type because we can determine it's type from its values? How? Is that it, or is there more to this definition?

• Database design: one huge table or separate tables?

  Currently I am designing a database for use in our company. We are using SQL Server 2008. The database will hold data gathered from several customers. The goal of the database is to acquire aggregate benchmark numbers over several customers. Recently, I have become worried with the fact that one table in particular will be getting very big. Each customer has approximately 20.000.000 rows of data, and there will soon be 30 customers in the database (if not more). A lot of queries will be done on this table. I am already noticing performance issues and users being temporarily locked out. My question, will we be able to handle this table in the future, or is it better to split this table up into smaller tables for each customer?

Is there a function somewhere in java or php that will convert the format for me? • Best way to get photoshop to optimise 35 related pictures for fast transmission

  I have 35 pictures taken from a stationary camera aimed at a lightbox in which an object is placed, rotated at 10 degrees in each picture. If I cycle through the pictures quickly, the image looks like it is rotating. If I wished to 'rotate' the object in a browser but wanted to transmit as little data as possible for this, I thought it might be a good idea to split the picture into 36 pictures, where 1 picture is any background the images have in common, and 35 pictures minus the background, just showing the things that have changed. Do you think this approach will work? Is there a better route? How would I achieve this in photoshop?
