• Reading file resource in Unix and MacOS

  Hi, I am writing my first wxWidgets application which aims to be cross-platform. The program uses dll file for plugins and in Windows, reads dll resource part for information regarding plugin name, author name etc. I have never used Unix or MacOS (little Linux though) and am wondering whether compiling binary for these other OSes will require changes to the code written for Windows. For instance, is there a DLL equivalent in Unix and MacOS? Are there any provisions of compiling resource strings and files into a such files? Thanks, Sanjeev

• How to have a PHP Website tool with a version check

  Hi, So I work on a small php website tool that a few people use and what I'm looking to have added is a little version checker in it. The tool is normally hosted by others on different servers/domains/whatever have you so I'm having a bit of a trouble figuring out how I can accomplish this and do so in the best possible method. So what I'm looking to do is have a webpage that just has a number on it which is the latest version. Lets say 3.2.2 is displayed on www.myawesomephptool.com/version.html in some way shape or form . Now on their installation when they open up their admin page it pulls in that 3.2.2 as the latest version to see if they are on that version. So trying to keep it simple on requirements too. • Continous integration with .net and svn

  We're currently not applying the automated building and testing of continous integration in our project. We haven't bothered this far as we're only 2 developers working on it, but even with a team of 2 I still think it would be valuable to use continous integration and get a confirmation that our builds don't break or tests start failing. We're using .Net with C# and WPF. We have created Python-scripts for building the application - using MSbuild - and for running all tests. Our source is in SVN. What would be the best approach to apply continous integration with this setup? What tool should we get? It should be one which doesn't require alot of setup. Simple procedures to get started and little maintanance is a must.

• XCode 3.2.1 and Instruments: Useless Stack Trace

  I've reached the stage where it's time to start tracking down memory leaks and, to my dismay, Instruments is giving me very little to go on (other than the fact that I definitely have leaks). My stack trace contains no information other than memory addresses. Since I'm working on a new project and I've transitioned to version 3.2.1 of XCode in tandem, I'm not sure if it's my program configuration or XCode that's causing the problem. I have found one reference to the issue coupled with a post on the dyld leak that seems to be prevalent with the 3.2.1 release. Since I haven't been able to find much on the problem I'm guessing it's something I've created rather than a systematic issue with XCode. If someone has any idea where I might have thrown a wrench in the works, I would love some pointers. Also, if someone could just verify that the stack trace is indeed functioning properly in 3.2.1 that would be useful as well.

• Getting ready to learn html5

  I'm a desktop application developer, and I plan learning html5, but as it's not released, there are (almost) no published books and not too much infomation for beginners on the web... I feel I should start with html4 and the current web development skills. I think I should start with html4, css, and javascript... but there are so many technologies related that I get lost :D So, what current technologies will be still used when html5 is released? I mean, what about "jquery" and "ajax"? I know they are javascript under the hood, but will they still make sense in the future? What would you recommend me considering that I have just a little bit of html knowlegde, almost null CSS and completely null in javascript?

• Tracking graphics tablet input in C#

  I'm writing an XNA application with C#, and I want to be able to control the application with a graphics tablet. All I need to be able to do is track the position and pressure of the pen on the tablet, it would be nice to have some built in gesture recognition but I'm willing to build that myself if needed. My first attempt at this was to use the vbtablet library. However, when I sent this to a friend it failed to work. It seems that the underlying technology is quite old and not supported by some tablets. My second attempt is to play with the Microsoft.Ink system. This looks promising, but I know very little about this subject and I'm struggling to make it work properly - for example I can't find how to read the raw tablet input and disable mouse pointer mode on the tablet when using an InkOverlay. What's the best system to use and what good documentation is there for a beginner in this field?

• HTML/CSS layout question

  Guys, I just need a little help with some CSS layout if you don't mind. I've got three things I'm trying to play around with and I need some help making this work the way I was hoping. I've got the element of a page, which I'd like to be 100% of the browser window, obviously. Then I've got two elements which I'd like to stack on top of each other, but the trick is this, I'd like the bottom div, (a menu which should really be a fixed height) to determine the height of the top div. Is there a way to lay this out in CSS?

  I've noticed some really odd results form vm_stat on OSX 10.6. According to this, its barely hitting the cache. Searches of pretty much everywhere I could think of turn up little to explain why the rate is so low. I asked a few friends and they're seeing the same thing. What gives and how can I make it better? • Boost::Asio : io_service.run() vs poll() or how do I integrate boost::asio in mainloop

  Hi, I am currently trying to use boost::asio for some simple tcp networking for the first time, and I allready came across something I am not really sure how to deal with. As far as I understand io_service.run() method is basically a loop which runs until there is nothing more left to do, which means it will run until I release my little server object. Since I allready got some sort of mainloop set up, I would rather like tp update the networking loop manually from there just for the sake of simplicity, and I think io_service.poll() would do what I want, sort of like this: void myApplication::update() { myIoService.poll(); //do other stuff } This seems to work, but I am still wondering if there is a drawback from this method since that does not seem to be the common way to deal with boost::asios io services. Is this a valid approach or should I rather use io_service.run() in a non blocking extra thread?

  I am looking for a streaming CDN recommendation. Cost and performance are my chief concerns. Video viewers may be all over the globe, with the, US, Europe, Russia and South America topping the list (yes, I know that leaves out a little :-). I saw the following list of streaming CDNs in LinkedIn: Akamai, BitGravity, EdgeCast, Highwinds, Internap, Level3, Limelight, Mirror Image, Move Networks, Qbrick, SimpleCDN, StreamZilla, Swarmcast (streaming via HTTP), WINK Streaming... (+Amazon's S3 and CloudFront) Can anyone recommend any of these or others? Or a different type of technology (e.g. P2P).

  I have been experimenting with some concepts from XP, like the following: Pair Programming Test First Programming Incremental Deliveries Ruthless Refactoring So far so good until I had a major stump: How do I design my test cases when there aren't any code yet? From what basis do I have to design them? From simple assumptions? From the initial requirements? Or is this where UML diagrams and the "analysis phase" fits in? Just had to ask because in some XP books I've read, there was little to no discussion of any diagramming tool (there was one which suggested I come up with pseudocodes and some sort of a flowchart...but it did not help me in writing my tests)

• What is the need of functional programming?

  I have read about functional programming which is stateless, gives the same result invocation after invocation, about closures and other related concepts. I still feel that I have very little idea what these things are about. Thinking about this, right now, I feel complete in C, C++, and Java. Any programming problem and I start thinking in one of these languages. So, I never feel and understand the need for functional languages. A good starting point therefore would be to try to understand some things that are not possible in imperative languages but possible in functional languages. I feel unless I understand where exactly functional languages fit inside my already complete world of C, C++ and Java, I would never be able to appreciate and understand them. So, can somebody help me understand the real need for functional programming? Where exactly do they fit in?

  i see the new feature of areas in asp.net-mvc 2. it got me thinking. why would i need this? i did some reading on the use cases and it came down to a specific point to me around how big and how broad scope should my controllers should be? should i try to have many little controllers? one big controller? how do people determine the sweet spot for number of controllers? i think mine are maybe too large (which had me questioning areas in the first place as maybe my controller name should really be an area and have a number of smaller controllers)

  When running our Silverlight 3 application out-of-browser, startup takes a little time, but it's long enough to be noticeable. During this startup, the background of the window hosting the application displays an ugly white background color. When running in-browser, we have a splash screen, but that's loaded via JavaScript of course. How can I get a splash screen working for an out-of-browser Silverlight 3? Or if that's not possible, is there a way I can at least change the background color of the window?

• Why does appending "" to a String save memory?

  I used a variable with a lot of data in it, say String data. I wanted to use a small part of this string in the following way: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18); After some hours of debugging (with a memory visualizer) I found out that the objects field smallpart remembered all the data from data, although it only contained the substring. When I changed the code into: this.smallpart = data.substring(12,18)+""; ..the problem was solved! Now my application uses very little memory now! How is that possible? Can anyone explain this? I think this.smallpart kept referencing towards data, but why? UPDATE: How can I clear the big String then? Will data = new String(data.substring(0,100)) do the thing?

  Hello, I was wondering if there is a library for editing program flow. I refer to conditions if, loops (do, while, for) and other elements that can exist inside a program. What I would like to have is some sort of a CAD application (similar to an UML editor) from where I can take some elements and edit their properties, make connections between them.   The title for this question pretty much sums up what I'm asking. I've got a list of taxonomy terms, and I'm using a view to display the latest post to each one. I'd like to also display a custom field set up in CCK just under this. Currently, I'm just using "date updated" of the taxonomy term itself which was easy to set up in views. I'd like to drill a little deeper and get the custom "event date" field I've added to the content type last posted to the taxonomy term I'm "viewing". I've got a feeling I'm going to have to write my own database query for this. If (I can avoid that){ How do I set up such a view? } Else{ What's the best practice for including lower level database queries alongside views? }

• Is there an easy to script 2d game world?

  For a school project we're developing a game that's a little like Conway's game of life, with different organisms taking up slots in the world and then eating each other. I would like to see this take place in a 2d world. Like being able to take starcraft and have zergling and marines play roles. The problem with starcraft is that the whole algorithm would have to be written inside of the game editor, and starcraft isn't free or open source. So is there another engine that is starcraft/warcraft/AOE-ish that can be scripted from outside of the game and is freely available? (I'm asking a lot here I know)

  On a HTTPS site embedding youtube clips works great in all browser, except Internet Explorer where I get this famous little warning message: "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This page contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS ... etc" I've tried to solve this in several ways. The most promising one was to use the ProxyPass functionality in Apache to map to YouTube. Like this: ProxyPass: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com ProxyPassReverse: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com This gets rid of the annoying warning. However, the youtube SWF fails to start streaming The SWF i manage to load into the browser simply states : "An error occurred, please try again later". Potential solutions are perhaps: Download youtube FLV:s and serve them out of own domain (gah) Use custom FLV-player and stream only FLV:s from youtube over a https proxy?

  I have an interview tomorrow morning and just found out that I will also be taking an hour-long Java proficiency test! I am a certified C# .NET developer but have barely touched Java since college. (Yes, I am thinking about switching from .NET development to Java!) I'm not going to be able to effectively cram the whole of the Java library by tomorrow morning. What are some key ideas that I should study that might actually make a difference in such a short time frame? (The examiners will be taking into account that I have had little exposure to Java.) • Can Cython compile to an EXE?

  I know what Cythons purpose is. It's to write compilable C extensions in a Python-like language in order to produce speedups in your code. What I would like to know (and can't seem to find using my google-fu) is if Cython can somehow compile into an executable format since it already seems to break python code down into C. I already use Py2Exe, which is just a packager, but am interested in using this to compile down to something that is a little harder to unpack (Anything packed using Py2EXE can basically just be extracted using 7zip which I do not want) It seems if this is not possible my next alternative would just be to compile all my code and load it as a module and then package that using py2exe at least getting most of my code into compiled form, right?

  Hi, I'm writing an app that calls ruby code from c. I am having a little difficulty and wondered if anyone could point me in the rite direction. I currently have in my C. #include ruby.h main() { ruby_init(); rb_require("myRubyFile"); rb_funcall(rb_module_new(), rb_intern("RubyFunction"), 0, NULL); } My ruby file is in the same directory as my c file and is called myRubyFile.rb and contains a definition of the function RubyFunction(). This is a cut down of what I actually want to do, just making it more readable for others. I just require some feedback as to whether this is the correct method to call ruby code from my c file.   At my company we are trying to add code reviewing practices into our development process and for that purpose we decided to use Review Board. While Review Board should work out of the box for Subversion the workflow for Mercurial looks a little bit involved. Firstly it seems that only post reviewing(via post-review script) is supported for this type of repo. Secondly documentation is unclear whether post-review actually supports Mercurial(it only mentions git). Could you folks describe your workflow in detail please?   I wanted to try a little design by contract in my latest C# application and wanted to have syntax akin to: public string Foo() { set { Assert.IsNotNull(value); Assert.IsTrue(value.Contains("bar")); _foo = value; } } I know I can get static methods like this from a unit test framework, but I wanted to know if something like this was already built-in to the language or if there was already some kind of framework floating around. I can write my own Assert functions, just don't want to reinvent the wheel.
