• LINQ Quicksort is Unstable Except When Cascading

  On page 64 of "LINQ To Objects Using C# 4.0" (Tony Magennis) he states that LINQ's quicksort ordering algorithm is unstable... ...although this is simply solved by cascading the result into a ThenBy or ThenByDescending operator. Huh? Why would cascading an unstable sortation into another sortation fix the result? In fact, I'd say that isn't possible. The original order, once passed through an unstable sort, is simply lost. What am I missing here?

• C, Cygwin, and compiling drand and srand

  Hello, I have a C code which I am trying to compile in Cygwin and which contains both the drand() and srand() functions. I had Windows Vista with Cygwin installed and the code seemed to comile fine, but my computer broke and I had to get a new one. The new computer has Windows 7 64-bit version. I had a few issues downloading Cygwin but finally managed to do it by only selecting a few packages and then have been trying to get the rest that I need. The problem is I don't have the help I had installing it on my other computer so I don't know which packages I actually need, so I have just been guessing (all the gcc ones) but I mustn't have the one I need for srand and drand to work. If anyone could point me in the right direction, and also possibly just let me know which packages I need to compile C so I can check I have them all that would be great.   I am trying to copy a file using the following code: File targetFile = new File(targetPath + File.separator + filename); ... targetFile.createNewFile(); fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(fileToCopy); fileOutputStream = new FileOutputStream(targetFile); byte[] buffer = new byte[64*1024]; int i = 0; while((i = fileInputStream.read(buffer)) != -1) { fileOutputStream.write(buffer, 0, i); } For some users the targetFile.createNewFile results in this exception: java.io.IOException: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect at java.io.WinNTFileSystem.createFileExclusively(Native Method) at java.io.File.createNewFile(File.java:850) Filename and directory name seem to be correct. The directory targetPath is even checked for existence before the copy code is executed and the filename looks like this: AB_timestamp.xml The user has write permissions to the targetPath and can copy the file without problems using the OS. As I don't have access to a machine this happens on yet and can't reproduce the problem on my own machine I turn to you for hints on the reason for this exception.

  From what I understand, the noarch suffix means that it's architecture independent and should work universally. If this is the case, why should I install architecture-specific packages at all? Why not just go straight for the noarch? Are there optimizations in the x86 or x64 binaries that aren't found in the noarch binaries? What's best for high performance applications?   Well, i was looking forward to modify the bit rate of a mp3 file in java. I want to downsample(change its bit rate) the mp3 file from 256/384 kbps to say 64/128 kbps.. (I guess this is the only way one can achieve mp3 compression..or is there any other way.?) I searched for LameOnJ but that website is temperoraly down and so im not able to get the license file which we need to download in every 2 days. Is this possible using JMF..?   Hello I'm trying to create a div with contenteditable like the Facebook status update. Then I mean I want to show an autocomplete box when the user have written @. How would you do that. Currently I'm just playing with keypress and check if the keycode = 64. Somehow that works, but it doesn't validate if there's a space before the alfa, or if the user has unfocused the box, then focused it again. Any ideas? • Best Approach to process images in Django

  I've have an application with Android front end and Django as the back end. As part of the answers here, I'm confused over the approach which I should take to send images to Django Server. I've 2 options at my disposal as Piro pointed out there. 1) Sending images as Multi Part entity 2) Send image as a String after encoding it using Base 64. So I am considering the approach that would make it easy to be processed by Django. The images are small in size (<200kb) and number (<10). Any suggestions or pointers are most welcome.

  Quick curious question, memory allocation addresses are choosed by the language compiler or is it the OS which chooses the addresses for the memory asked? This is from a doubt about virtual memory, where it could be quickly explained as "let the process think he owns all the memory", but what happens on 64 bits architectures where only 48 bits are used for memory addresses if the process wants a higher address? Lets say you do a int a = malloc(sizeof(int)); and you have no memory left from the previous system call so you need to ask the OS for more memory, is the compiler the one who determines the memory address to allocate this variable, or does it just ask the OS for memory and it allocates it on the address returned by it?

• Browser Helper Object doesnot get loaded in IE8

  I have a BHO, which i can see it as enabled in Add On's list. But it does not get loaded when i start my IE on the Win2k8 R2 machines(64 bit). I have disabled IE Enhanced security as well but no help. The same BHO gets loaded in other machines. The registry details under (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects & HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID) seem to be fine. Is there any setting that disables BHO from actually getting loaded?

• aws-s3 can't find xml-simple, but in gem list

  I'm transitioning to heroku, and need to have AWS-s3 connections to deal with a variety of graphics. I've installed the aws-s3 gem, but one of its dependencies is not being found: xml-simple. My belief is that this is a standard part of RoR, and it is in the gem list. When I deploy to heroku, all is fine, but on my development server, it isn't being found when the code uses it to check the existence of a graphic. It works fine from the console, using s3sh. I'm not quite sure why this is -- what do I need to check? Using OS X 10.6, on a 64 bit machine -- can this be part of it?

• How to determine OS Platform with WMI?

  I am trying to figure out if there is a location in WMI that will return the OS Architecture (i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit) that will work across "all" versions of Windows. I thought I had figured it out looking at my Win2k8 system when I found the following: Win32_OperatingSystem / OSArchitecture I was wrong. It doesn't appear that this field exists on Win2k3 systems. Argh! So, is anyone aware of another field in WMI that "is" the same across server versions? If not, what about a registry key that is the same? I am using a tool that only allows me to configure simple field queries, so I cannot use a complex script to perform. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers... Cary

  I have some dylibs to load from python with ctypes. I can load libbass.dylib without problem, but I can't load the self-compiled libmp3lame.dylib. Here is the error I get. OSError: dlopen(libmp3lame.dylib, 6): no suitable image found. Did find: libmp3lame.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture Then, I inspect the file type of those libs. Here is the result of libbass.dylib: libbass.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures libbass.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 libbass.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc And here is the self-compiled one: libmp3lame.dylib: Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 I did compile the lame library with the install instructions: ./configure make make install I'm new to mac system, here comes the problem: how to build the libmp3lame.dylib so that it supports different architecture I want? • Pros and cons of ways of storing an unsigned int without an unsigned int data type

  I have values that are 64-bit unsigned ints, and I need to store them in mongodb, which has no unsigned int type. I see three main possibilities for storing them in other field types, and converting on going in and out: Using a signed int is probably easiest and most space efficient, but has the disadvantage that they're not human readable and if someone forgets to do the conversion, some of them will work, which may obscure errors. Raw binary is probably most difficult for inexperienced programmers to deal with, and also suffers from non-human-readability. A string representation is the least space efficient (~40 bytes in unicode vs 8 bytes per field), but then at least all of the possible values will map properly, and for querying only a conversion to string is required instead of a more complicated conversion. I need these values to be available from different platforms, so a single driver-specific solution isn't an option. Any major pros and cons I've missed? Which one would you use?

Is there a way to have multiple of the same keys with different values? Or is there another form of array that has the same format?   I've just read the support for Windows XP SP2 is going to expire in a couple of months: http://www.infoworld.com/d/windows/microsoft-end-support-windows-2000-xp-sp2-july-13-961 x86 users have XP3 which is going to last abit longer but XP x64 doesn't have SP3. Is there some kind of official response to this? Or is it just about time to panic (and buy win7)?

  I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes? • LRU caches in C

  I need to cache a large (but variable) number of smallish (1 kilobyte to 10 megabytes) files in memory, for a C application (in a *nix environment). Since I don't want to eat all my memory, I'd like to set hard memory limit (say, 64 megabytes) and push files into a hash table with the file name as the key and dispose of the entries with the least use. What I believe I need is an LRU cache. Really, I'd rather not roll my own so if someone knows where I can find a workable library, please point the way? Failing that, can someone provide a simple example of an LRU cache in C? Related posts indicated that a hash table with a doubly-linked list, but I'm not even clear on how a doubly-linked list keeps LRU. Side note: I realize this is almost exactly the function of memcache, but it's not an option for me. I also took a look at the source hoping to enlighten myself on LRU caching, with no success.

• WinForms: Why do I get InvalidCastException when showing folder browser dialog?

  I am randomly getting InvalidCastException when showing FolderBrowserDialog and also many clients have reported this. I have not been able to find anything relevant on the internet. Does anyone know what causes this/how to fix this? My code: using (FolderBrowserDialog fbd = new FolderBrowserDialog()) { fbd.ShowNewFolderButton = false; if (fbd.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK) Stack trace: Error: System.InvalidCastException: 'Unable to cast object of type 'System.__ComObject' to type 'IMalloc'.'. When running out of debugger, it happens only very rarely (happened once or twice in 6 months) on my 64 bit Windows 7 and goes away after restart. The clients are certainly not running the app in debugger so it is surely reproducible out of debugger.
