Recently our sysadmin sent us the following email (I removed the names): Hi, I had a situation yesterday (not mentioning names) when I had to perform a three way md5 checksum verification over the phone, more than once. If we can stick to the same standards then this will save any confusion if you are ever asked to repeat something over the phone or in the office for clarification. This is of particular importance when trying to speak or say this over the phone … m4f7s29gsd32156ffsdf … that’s really difficult to get right on a bad line. The rule is very simple: 1) Speak in blocks of 4 characters and continue until the end. The recipient can read back or ask for verification on one of the blocks. 2) Use the same language! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenetic_alphabet#NATO Myself, xxx and a few others I know all speak the NATO phonetic alphabet (aka police speak) and this makes it so much easier and saves so much time. If you want to learn quickly then all you really need is A to F and 0 to 9. 0 to 9 is really easy, A to F is only 6 characters to learn. Could you tell me if forcing the developers to learn NATO alphabet is a good practise, or if there are ways (and which ways) to avoid being in such a situation?

• 301 redirect from HTTP to HTTPS - how to be sure Google is fetching the correct information?

  I'm hoping somebody might be able to provide a bit of advice on an issue I am having. I have one site where we implemented a 301 redirect on the homepage from HTTP to HTTPS. We have links on the homepage to other parts of the site that are not under SSL (in fact there is only one other page under SSL). When I go to our Webmaster Tools account I notice that we are not being provided with any webmaster information (e.g., search queries, backlinks, etc...) related to our homepage under SSL. • Velvet screen after grub selection

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, the boot seems to stop after selecting the ubuntu option (same with the rescue one) in the grub menu. At first I thought this was related to grub-efi, as I've had similar problems after a Ubuntu 11.04 update which replaced grub-efi with grub-pc and got me stuck on a "elf magic" grub console (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/800910). While the 11.04 problem was resolved with a simple chroot and apt-get install from the live cd, that solution doesn't work this time. The drive with the bootloader is a sata3 ssd with 64 gb gpt (sdb1 20 mb efi boot partition fat16, sdb2 60 gb root ext4 and sdb3 4 gb swap) on a msi e350ia-e45 mainboard with a pair of 2 TB ext4 mbr drives for photos/music/movies. I've tried a few grub-install/update-grub with boot-directory sdb1 from chroot, but I cant seem to go anywhere. Even this guide: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2#EFI (ofc I replaced grub2 with grub in the grub-install and efibootmgr commands) doesnt seem to get me anywhere. Any help or ideas are appeciated ;) edit: I guess its the combination of gpt/uefi that also seems to haunt f16 edit: same with 12.04 beta btw

• Location-Based redirection and duplication in sub-directories affecting SEO

  I currently own the website www.xyz.com. The website has a sub-directory for each of the 3 target countries: .../en-US/ (United States), .../es-MX/ (Mexico), and .../es-DO/ (Dominican Republic). I have two main questions about this setup: Currently, the main domain/root (xyz.com) contains a blank index.php file, but I would like for a user to be redirected to one of the sub-directories based on their regional location. What is the best way to accomplish this? I have looked at using browser language-based redirection, but how would I know whether to direct a user to the MX or DO site if the browser language is set to spanish? Is there a way to detect a user's geographic location? Also, the 3 websites are practically identical except they all have 3 unique color schemes and the US site is in english while the MX and DO sites are in spanish. My problem is that I believe GoogleBot is penalizing/banning my site because the spanish text on the MX and DO pages are nearly identical and are thus marked as duplicates/spam. Is there a way to avoid this?

• Freeze on Boot WindowsXP

  Ok first off I know I should have Windows 7 but i don't Its a really old computer and i'm not sure if it can run the latest OS of ubuntu but i'm trying any whay so here are my specs or what i could have gathered from the computer(viruses are every where and most of the drivers are gone) Specs OS WindowsXP(it isn't letting me know which one that is blocked) Graphics card(can't access device manger it is blocked also) graphics card is 2003-2004 era though ram 512mb last time i checked USB(Drivers Gone) Wireless Card(Drivers Gone) Lan Card(Drivers Gone) Audio(Drivers Gone) CD Drive (it runs and works but i can't check its properties that's blocked to) Computer Dell Inspiron 600m Good News I have the Driver CD for everything Bad News I Don't have the OS CD I know the Computer is trash but i want to flash it anyway and just install linux(ubuntu) The second problem is it doesn't even want to load the CD all the way it is just stuck at the Ubuntu Screen with all the bubbles orange and if i resart it just does it again. any help would be nice. EDIT: okay i tried the first comment and it said i need a firmware file from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware the firmware is b43/ucode5.fw, b43-open/ucode5.fw is there any other way of installing this firmware without being in the Ubuntu because what I have read is I need to be in Ubuntu to do this... Thanks for all the help you are giving me i have read your comments but i don't want to wait another two hours downloading that if i can get it working on this...

• How to force ADF to speak your language (or any common language)

  When I started working for Oracle, one of the first tasks I was given was to contribute some content to a great ADF course Frank and Chris are building. Among other things, they asked me to work on a module about Internationalization. While doing research work, I unearthed a little gem I had overlooked all those years. JDeveloper, as you may know, speaks your language - as long as your language is English, that is. Oracle ADF, on the other hand, is a citizen of the world. It is available in more than 25 different languages. But while this is a wonderful feature for end users, it is rather cumbersome for developers. Why is that? Have you ever tried to search the OTN forums for a solution with a non-English error message as your query? I have, once. But how can you force ADF to use English for its logging operations? Playing with your system settings will not help, unfortunately. By default, ADF will output its error messages in the selected locale for the operating system account the application server runs on. The only way to change this behavior is to pass initialization parameters to the JVM used by the application server. It is even possible to specify the language and country/region separately. In the example below, we choose English and the United States respectively. -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US In the case of WebLogic Server, it is possible to add such parameters in setDomainEnv.sh (or .cmd) to apply the settings to all the managed servers present on a node. • MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.11 Is Now Available!

  We are pleased to announce that MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.3.11 is now available for download on the My Oracle Support (MOS) web site. It will also be available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud in approximately 1-2 weeks. This is a maintenance release that contains several new features and fixes a number of bugs. • How should I compress a file with multiple bytes that are the same with Huffman coding?

  On my great quest for compressing/decompressing files with a Java implementation of Huffman coding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huffman_coding) for a school assignment, I am now at the point of building a list of prefix codes. Such codes are used when decompressing a file. Basically, the code is made of zeroes and ones, that are used to follow a path in a Huffman tree (left or right) for, ultimately, finding a byte. In this Wikipedia image, to reach the character m the prefix code would be 0111 The idea is that when you compress the file, you will basically convert all the bytes of the file into prefix codes instead (they tend to be smaller than 8 bits, so there's some gain). So every time the character m appears in a file (which in binary is actually 1101101), it will be replaced by 0111 (if we used the tree above). Therefore, 1101101110110111011011101101 becomes 0111011101110111 in the compressed file. I'm okay with that. But what if the following happens: In the file to be compressed there exists only one unique byte, say 1101101. There are 1000 of such byte. Technically, the prefix code of such byte would be... none, because there is no path to follow, right? I mean, there is only one unique byte anyway, so the tree has just one node. Therefore, if the prefix code is none, I would not be able to write the prefix code in the compressed file, because, well, there is nothing to write. Which brings this problem: how would I compress/decompress such file if it is impossible to write a prefix code when compressing? (using Huffman coding, due to the school assignment's rules) This tutorial seems to explain a bit better about prefix codes: http://www.cprogramming.com/tutorial/computersciencetheory/huffman.html but doesn't seem to address this issue either.

• What happens when you close an Adsense account?

  I need to change my payee name, I have asked in Google Adsense product forum one of top contributor replied me: "You will have to close the account & apply again with using your real payee name. That's why they specifically state that the payee name needs to match the full name on your bank account." https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/47333?hl=en This makes sense, but got few question because the support page do not have sufficient content to help me. My questions are: What happens when you close your Adsense account? If I apply again, then what will be the process to re-gain my account? I mean should I have to apply for a website again, then Adsense team will review and approve that? Is there any chance to disapprove my account? What about current check? I have two check in my hand. So, is Google will send those check again to me with my new payee name? Anyone experienced this problem? I have asked it on Google Forum but got no answer!

• Software Center does not load

  I'm having problems with opening my Software center and it just shuts off after loading a few seconds. I can't even get it to the main page of the Software Center. I did try to follow these commands but of no avail: sudo apt-get purge software-center sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install software-center Instead, I get an error after entering the first command: eim@eim-VAIO:~$ sudo apt-get purge software-cente Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: **Problem with MergeList** /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_universe_i18n_Translation-en E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. I tried doing this aswell: Run : cd ~/.cache; rm -r software-center (nothing happened) And this: Add /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 to the Startup applications error message: eim@eim-VAIO:~$ /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 Gtk-Message: Not loading module "atk-bridge": The functionality is provided by GTK natively. But I can't seem to get this work. Can someone please help? NOTE: Okay... Guess I just found the solution to my problem. I'll just post the answer here since I can't answer my own question yet. Open terminal: sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf sudo apt-get update Now I can open my Software Center!
