I understand that to provide transactional integrity of the install process some "backup files" could've been created and have to be cleaned up. What I do not understand is why on many occasions this step takes considerably longer than the rest of the installation. Any idea why?

    So I have a string, and I want to strip out some parts of it using, for example, the firt and last characters of the "interesting" part. String dirty = "$!$!%!%$something interesting&!!$!%$something interesting2"; And the output something like: String clean = "something interesting:something interesting2"; Note: The code needs to work without knowing the random part, changing everytime the program runs. I researched and only found code that does it, but only knowing the random segment.

    I have a comma delimited list I want to import into a database, and in some cases the last item is blank: item1, item2, item3 item1, item2, item1, item2, I'd like to replace all of these empty columns with a placeholder value using a regexp item1, item2, item3 item1, item2, PLACEHOLDER item1, item2, PLACEHOLDER I tried preg_replace("/,\n/", ",PLACEHOLDER\n",$csv);, but this isn't working. Anyone know what regexp would work for this?

    I have been writing embedded C applications for almost 20 years. In the last few years I have written quite a few PC based GUI interfaces in Visual C so I could interface my embedded systems to a PC. Although my primary work will still be in deeply embedded C, I have finally decided to move my PC based tools into Ruby - (for quick scripting type stuff) and C++ or C# for GUI based interfaces and applications. Should I bother with C++ or just move straight to C#?

For example, there are particular projects I've inherited which, when working on, I cannot use the CTRL+SPACE dropdown symbol list in the Delphi editor without getting an Access Violation error, this would easily top my list but there are many more.     I have a classified_id variable which matches one document in a MySql table. I am currently fetching the information about that one record like this: SELECT * FROM table WHERE table.classified_id = $classified_id I wonder if there is a faster approach, for example like this: SELECT 1 FROM table WHERE table.classified_id = $classified_id Wont the last one only select 1 record, which is exactly what I need, so that it doesn't have to scan the entire table but instead stops searching for records after 1 is found? Or am I dreaming this? Thanks

    Just found the MIG Base 64 utility but its over 6 years old since its last release. It would appear to be quicker than the Apache commons equivalent but I have yet to confirm by writing up an actual test. Has anyone verified its correctness which is always a worry.
