• Alignment of Hebrew Vowel points in Android

  I want to display Hebrew text with vowel points (nikkud) using the Canvas.drawText interface. The vowel points come out misaligned, as in the following image taken using a Motorola Defy+ device: The hiriq is between the resh and the yod, the holam between the vav and nun. I have added the rtl code (\u200F) to the string at both ends, no joy. I know that there are applications that have solved this problem, such as the Smart Siddur. Is there a difference between text-based applications and graphics based? I would think that the same engine renders the text in both cases. I suppose I could split up the string and place the vowels separately, but that seems pretty painful and not extensible. TIA for any clues.

• Kind of stumped with some basic C# constructors.

The problem lies in that a constructor cannot exist twice with the same type of parameters. Sure I can tell the logical difference between the two paramters, but the computer can't. Any suggestions on how to handle this? Thank you!

• Getting websites to detect our mobile browser

  I've been asked to find out a sensible way to make the majority of popular websites detect our browser - which is functionally complete, but is running on rather constrained hardware - as a "mobile" browser. The idea is that the heaviest popular websites seem to have mobile versions, which render much faster and fit better on the screen. I've looked at the inverse question, which tells me that there isn't an obvious standard way of doing it - http://www.brainhandles.com/techno-thoughts/detecting-mobile-browsers is a case in point. This is borne out by looking at a variety of User-Agent strings from popular mobile and desktop browsers. So far the best idea we can come up with is to add "Mobile" to the string somewhere, since this is the main visible difference between Safari for iPad/iPhone and for Windows/Mac. Does anyone have a better idea?

  I am attempting to tune some stored procedures and have a question on indexes. I have used the tuning advisor and they recommended two indexes, both for the same table. The issue is one index is for one column and the other is for multiple columns, of which it includes the same column from the first. My question is why and what is the difference? • Comparing images using SIFT

  I'm trying to compare 2 images that are taken from a digital camera. Since there may be movement on the camera, I want to first make the pictures "match" and then compare (using some distant function). To match them, I'm thinking about cropping the second picture and using SIFT to find it inside the first picture... it will probably have a small difference on scale/translation/rotation so then I'd need to find the transformation matrix that converts image 1 to image 2 (based on points found by SIFT) any ideas on how to do that (or I guess that's a common problem that may have some opensource implementation?)? thanks

• Oracle EXECUTE IMMEDIATE changes explain plan of query.

  I have a stored procedure that I am calling using EXECUTE IMMEDIATE. The issue that I am facing is that the explain plan is different when I call the procedure directly vs when I use EXECUTE IMMEDIATE to call the procedure. This is causing the execution time to increase 5x. The main difference between the plans is that when I use execute immediate the optimizer isn't unnesting the subquery (I'm using a NOT EXISTS condition).   Suppose I have a vector<int> myvec and I want to loop through all of the elements in reverse. I can think of a few ways of doing this: for (vector<int>::iterator it = myvec.end() - 1; it >= myvec.begin(); --it) { // do stuff here } for (vector<int>::reverse_iterator rit = myvec.rbegin(); rit != myvec.rend(); ++rit) { // do stuff here } for (int i = myvec.size() - 1; i >= 0; --i) { // do stuff here } So my question is when should I use each? Is there a difference? I know that the first one is dangerous because if I pass in an empty vector, then myvec.end() - 1 is undefined, but are there any other hazards or inefficiencies with this?

  Hi, I'm binding a GridView to a domain model object, this domain model object has a method for working out a formatted value to display on the grid. I'd like to use this method for my display value, which is fine, but I'd also like to be able to sort on the value returned by that method. My sort expression can only take in a property/field at the moment. Help please! What do I need to do to get this to work? I'm using an SPGridView actually, but that doesn't make a lot of difference to my problem. Thanks.

  Can anyone give me a quick rundown of the color syntax meanings in xcode? I am running into some problems and understanding the color coding I am sure will help me out. Currently I have some variables that are light blue and I think they need to be black but I am not sure of the difference? masterViewController=[[UINavigationController alloc] initWithDestination: destination]; I believe my masterViewController here should be colored black and not the light blue it is currently colored - I am assuming I defined or initialized something wrong somewhere. First day in xCode so I am pretty damn confused!

  I use the tab key to indent my python code in Vim, but whenever I copy and paste a block Vim replaces every tab with 4 spaces, which raises an IndentationError I tried setting :set paste as suggested in related questions but it makes no difference Other sites suggest pasting 'tabless' code and using the visual editor to re-indent, but this is asking for trouble when it comes to large blocks Are there any settings I can apply to vim to maintain tabs on copy/paste?   Given a cubic bezier curve P0,P1,P2,P3 with the following properties: • Both P1 and P2 are on the same side of the line formed by P0 and P3. • P2 can be projected onto the line segment formed by P0 and P3 but P1 cannot. What is the T value for the point on the curve farthest from P3? Here is an image with an example curve. The curve bulges on the left, so there is a point on the curve farther from P3 than P0. I found this reference for finding the minimum distance from an arbitrary point to a curve. Is trial and error the only way to solve for maximum distance as well? Does it make any difference that the point is an anchor on the curve? Thanks

When trying to decide between using the Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL as an ORM, what's the difference? The way I understand it, the Entity Framework (when used with LINQ to Entities) is a 'big brother' to LINQ to SQL? If this is the case - what advantages does it have? What can it do that LINQ to SQL can't do on its own?

If a timestamp is outside of a 2 minute interval from the set, it should be considered a part of another set. • jqgrid - edit form field combobox not defaulting to selected row value after first edit

  i am using jqgrid with asp.net-mvc. I have an edit form (using jqmodal) which works great but for some reason one combobox field doesn't default to the current selected row after the first time i bring up the edit form. the weird thing is that i have many other comboboxes which work fine every time and i don't see any real difference. here is an example of the field that doesn't work: { name: "TechOwner", index: "TechOwner", width: 70, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Person/GetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, and here is a field that works fine: { name: "FundingType", index: "FundingType", align: "left", width: 25, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Project/FundingGetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, the dropdown is getting populated with all options (including the current selected row option) but its just defaulting to the top item) instead of one that matches the current row. is there anything to look out for here that may cause this behavior?

  Consider a simple result set from a mysql query. rs("description") and rs("description").Value should be considered as the same thing. However, depending on how you access them, you get different results (!!) Access rs("description") directly and you are returned a "Field" object. Or, more importantly, use it directly in a call, and you are returned a "Field" object. mydescription = rs("description") + " is the description" Assign it to another variable, and the Value of that object is assigned... mydescription = rs("description") the contents of "mydescription" is a string. Why this difference? At one point in the life of ASP they must have both worked exactly the same, so why have they changed, and how can I change it back?

  How should browser detection be done now that jQuery 1.3 has deprecated (and I'm assuming removed in a future version) $.browser.msie and similar? I have used this a lot for determining which browser we are in for CSS fixes for pretty much every browser, such as: $.browser.opera $.browser.safari $.browser.mozilla ... well I think that's all of them :) The places where I use it, I'm not sure what browser issue is causing the problem, because a lot of times I'm just trying to fix a 1 px difference in a browser. Edit: With the new jQuery functionality, there is no way to determine if you are in IE6 or IE7. How should one determine this now?

I wish to know if the reason for this difference?

• How to display image that is located on another server on the network (ASP.NET)

  I've got a ASP.NET site that's located on a local server (MY_SERVER). And one of the things it does is pull up tiff files which are located on another server (ANOTHER_SERVER). The location of each of these files is stored in SQL. I pull up each of these images and am supposed to display them. The problem is: the files are not named with a tiff extension (does it matter?) they aren't displaying at all. I am using an Image control to display these images, and I'm not sure if it matters that the extension is not set (does the image control know the difference between an jpg and a tiff without the extension?) I am guessing the images aren't displaying because they are not on the same server MY_SERVER that the images are located (ANOTHER_SERVER). Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Does ImageIO read imply anti-aliased scaling?

  I've replaced the Java internal ImageFetcher with an own implementation using ImageIO. Some image renderers of our software, which use these images, now draw anti-aliased scaled images instead of non anti-aliased. The only change is the source of the image, which are now BufferedImages instead of Toolkit-Images. The question now is, where is the difference? Which property causes the images to scale anti-aliased? I've always thought that the anti-alias key ONLY depends on the graphics I paint on - but this is obviously wrong. By the way: unfortunately I cannot change the renderers.

  Hello, As we all know that EJB's in 3.1 or 3.0 are simple POJOs. You just need to give annotations here and there and it gets converted to EJB from simple class. So, now my question is why should i use EJBs at all? Can i not do without them? In .Net i created class library and got things done. I never felt the need for anything like EJB. Simple classes were enough. Then, why in Java people stress on EJB? What is difference between a simple POJO and EJB in terms of execution and memory? Further which function should i write in EJB and which should i write in simple class? Should i dump every function in EJB only? or there is some kind of strategy? Does EJB provide anything special?

• New asp "showat" attribute required inconsistently in VS2010. Why?

  When I generate code using T4 templates in Visual Studio 2010, I get the following error for each of my asp controls when I try to compile: Control "ddState" is missing required attribute "showat". I have never gotten this error in previous versions of .NET. Further, I don't get this error when I manually construct my pages either by dragging/dropping, nor do I get it when I type out the control text myself. When I generate code, I have to manually add showat="client" to my tag for the compiler to be happy. It was my understanding that I never had to explicitly specify this tag. The following: <asp:dropdownlist id="ddState" runat="server" showat="client" /> solves the problem. Why do I have to add this to generated code but not other times? (It's a VS-2010 webforms project, using VB, in case that makes a difference.)

  Hi I am relatively new to javascript development. At the moment I have a single javascript file with lots of little misc bits of code that get called in different part of the website. For example I have an event handler for some google maps stuff that is only called on 1 single page, I have some validation stuff for my contact page etc etc. My question, is how best to organise this code - given that each page only requires very little code but its different and specific per page? Oh, I am using jquery if that makes a difference.

• Page zoom slows down page rendering

  I'm building a map viewer much like Google maps and i've run into an interesting performance problem when a page is zoomed (i.e ctrl + OR ctrl -). It seems to affect all major browsers but Firefox has the worst problems as far as I can tell. The problem is that when the page is zoomed panning by dragging the mouse seems really sluggish. This can even be seen on Google maps. Pan the map left and right and note how smooth it is. Now press ctrl+ (3 or 4 times). Now pan the map left and right in the same way. Notice the difference? Does anyone know how I can minimize this problem?
