• Did Acronis True Image Home 2012 clone operation "lock" my BitLocker disk?

  After trying to clone my primary drive, which requires a reboot to proceed, BitLocker detected that the boot sector had changed and required the recovery keys. Not a good situation to be in on Sunday evening when it is your IT-department who hold the keys. After talking with the guys at IT, I have tree suspects on why BitLocker locked me out: The newly added, second hard drive in my machine. The changed boot-order in BIOS. The changes True Image did in order to do its things on boot. As an end-user, I should never have to end up in situations like these without any warning. I would like to know what really happened, so I can inform Acronis on how they can improve their product to avoid this situation in the future.

• Can I "branch" VirtualBox snapshots (base multiple VM on the same disk image + separate diffs)?

  I keep multiple VirtualBoxes for different projects. They are all running the same Debian base system. Keeping complete copies of all the disk images is getting expensive. Is there a way that I can base multiple VM on the same (read-only) disk image, with (hopefully small) diffs layered on top? This is just like snapshots work, except that there is no concept of "current" and "previous", they are more like branches. Or can I just use snapshots (of the "same" VM) for this? I would be wanting to run more than one of those snapshots concurrently.

  My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

  I have a Macbook Pro at work and installed the current VirtualBox (3.2.4) today. However, after using the VHD image for IE 7 on XP SP3 on this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef&displaylang=en The Virtual Operating System (XP) just thought there is no network card provided by the PC (the virtual PC simulated by VirtualBox), even if I set up 4 network cards in Settings, as NAT, host only, etc. So the XP cannot browse any webpage at all... Does any integration package need to be added for VirtualBox to make it work and how? (is VirtualBox providing a "too advanced" network card so XP SP3 doesn't have the driver for it? thanks.

  I want to plot an rgb image with gnuplot, and it must be hovering inside a 3d plot box, so that it can act as a "floor" for my data. How can I do it ? THe gnuplot examples use a heatmap to map the rgb values, but this is not what I want. Apart from receiving an error GNUPLOT (plot_image): Color boxes cannot handle RGB components. It is not what I want in any case. I need the full rgb data in the box, not mapped through a heatmap.

I'd like to avoid to spin up a 3D Program because then I need to render it, get the image out of it and into Photoshop. They seem to have added 3D Functionality into CS5, I just never looked at it.   My current setup is Ubuntu Desktop, running Apache + MySQL + PHP stack. I use this image to host my small website to the outside world. I want to now run a virtual machine on the box, that will act as the FreeNAS box for my internal network. This sounds like a bad idea if the website gets hacked/attacked. Should I just give up and grab a dedicated machine instead? Can I instead virtualize the web server and NAS side by side on this machine?

  So here's my issue: I want to use %cd% so a user can execute a script anywhere they want to place it, but if %cd% contains spaces, then it will fail (regardless of quotes). If I hardcode the path, it will function with quotes, but if it is a variable, it will fail. Fails: (if %cd% contains spaces) "%cd%\Testing.bat" Works: "C:\Program Files\Testing.bat" Any ideas?

• 47 memory leaks. STL pointers.

  I have a major amount of memory leaks. I know that the Sets have pointers and i cannot change that! I cannot change anything, but clean up the mess i have... I am creating memory with new in just about every function to add information to the sets. I have a Cd/ DVD/book: super classes of ITEM class and a library class.. How can i delete the memory i am creating in those functions? I cannot delete them in the function!!

The only real difference in the execution plans is that the temp table version introduces an index spool (eager spool) operation.

  I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing.   I have a bulk uploading object in place that is being used to bulk upload roughly 25-40 image files at a time. Each image is about 100-150 kb in size. During the upload, I've created a for each loop that takes the file name of the image (minus the file extension) to write it into a column named "sku". Also, for each file being uploaded, the date is recorded to a column named DateUpdated, as well as some image path data. This is because these product images are always being revised and improved. For each new/improved image, the file name and extension will remain the same - so that when image 321-54321.jpg was first uploaded to the server, the new/improved version of that image will still have the image file name as 321-54321.jpg. I can't say for sure if the file sizes will remain in the 100-150KB range. I'll assume that the image file size will grow eventually. When images get uploaded (again), there of course will be an existing record in the database for that image. What is the best way to: Check the database for the existing record (stored procedure or SqlDataReader or create a DataSet ...?) Then if record exists, simply UPDATE that record so that the DateUpdated column gets today's date. If no record exists, do the INSERT of the record as normal. Things to consider: If the record exists, we'll let the actual image be uploaded. It will simply overwrite the existing image so that the new version gets displayed on the web. We're using SQL Server 2000 on hosted environment (DiscountAsp). I'm programming in C#. The uploading process will be used by about 2 managers a few times a month (each) - which to me is not a allot of usage. Although I'm a jr. developer, I'm guessing that a stored procedure would be the way to go. Just seems more efficient - to do this record check away from the for each loop... but not sure. I'd need extra help writing a sproc, since I don't have too much experience with them. Thank everyone...

  Hi Guys, I have a Ubuntu 9.04 Linux running on Freescale's i.MX515(ARM Cortex based) board with me. There were about 250 updates pending and I did that today, well some of the updates failed because of the infamous errors: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: Couldn't rebuild package cache E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. • setup lowcost image storage server with 24x SSD array to get high IOPS?

  I want to build let's name it a lowcost Ra*san which would host for our social site the images (many millions) we have 5 sizes of every photo with 3 KB, 7 KB, 15 KB, 25 KB and 80 KB per Image. My idea is to build a Server with 24x consumer 240 GB SSD's in Raid 6 which will give me some 5 TB Disk space for the photo storage. To have HA I can add a 2nd one and use drdb. I'm looking to get above 150'000 IOPS (4K Random reads). As we mostly have read access only and rarely delete photos i think to go with consumer MLC SSD. I read many endurance reviews and don't see there a problem as long we don't rewrite the cells. What you think about my idea? - I'm not sure between Raid 6 or Raid 10 (more IOPS, cost SSD). - Is ext4 OK for the filesystem - Would you use 1 or 2 Raid controller, with Extender Backplane If anyone has realized something similar i would be happy to get Real World numbers. UPDATE I have buy 12 (plus some spare) OCZ Talos 480GB SAS SSD Drive's they will be placed in a 12-bay DAS and attached to a PERC H800 (1GB NV Cache, manufactured by LSI with fastpath) Controller, I plan to setup Raid 50 with ext4. If someone is wondering about some benchmarks let me know what you would like to see.

• Create image (EBS AMI) takes forever - possibly caused MySQL Server to break?

  I'm trying to create an EBS AMI from my running EC2 instance to reuse my LAMP fully configured (for my needs). I got my website up and running yesterday on this EC2 instance my MySQL was working fine until this morning (it's not that difficult to install LAMP thanks to yum so I can't see how I could go wrong with this; having said that, it's always difficult for one to realise his own errors) I have seen "Loading, please wait ..." for a few hours now. How do I know whether this is completed or its progress? Shortly after I tried to create the AMI image from my EC2 instance, I encountered database connection error can't connect to local mysql server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' I was able to restart mysqld at first. But database connection was down again. This time, I could not restart mysqld anymore. It shows MySQL Daemon failed to start. Could my attempt to create the AMI by any chance cause the MySQL server to reboot or corrupt? I did a lot of searched and have done the following although I think I shouldn't have to do any workaround for MySQL server to work here chown -R mysql.mysql /var/lib/mysql/ I also found this workaround but I'm very reluctant to follow due to my belief and the fact I would need to understand this problem first. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Getting back to searching for a solution for the MySQL server problem ... Thanks, Eric

• Apache on CentOS 5.9 VM serves my optimized images corrupted (but my Mac doesn't)

  I'm using a Vagrant VM to mirror the client's environment as closely as I can. As part of our build process we do no optimization of assets early on; that comes as we're ready to take a site live. Needless to say, this issue is beginning to worry me as we need to take the site live very soon. I use ImageOptim to automate optimization of image assets, which runs a whole series of tools (Zopfli, PNGOUT, OptiPNG, AdvPNG, PNGCrush). I always set the optimizations to their maximum setting. After optimization, my PNGs start looking like this: What's weird is, if I serve the same file through my Mac's copy of Apache, not through Vagrant, the image loads fine. In fact, the only time it's ever corrupt like this is when the image is served from the Vagrant VM and its install of Drupal. All optimized JPEGs display only the first ~20% of the image. And PNGs, depending on the image, may show either a portion or the "progressive"-style corruption below. The browser itself makes no difference, the same browser will serve an uncorrupted image from my Mac's Apache instance and a corrupt image from the VM. When I disable all PNG optimizations except PNGCrush, and the removal of the PNG metadata, the image is served corrupted. I'm optimizing JPEG images with JPEGmini. The server is running CentOS 5.9, Apache 2.2.3-85, PHP 5.3.3, and Drupal 7. As best as I can tell the error lies somewhere within the VM, either with Apache or with (perhaps) the network stack. Seems like the tools that optimize the compression of the PNGs and JPEGs are what trigger this error. I've already determined that the .htaccess file isn't interfering with how the images load. What should I try to troubleshoot this?

• Burning Linux ISO to DVD and making it bootable.

  Hi everyone, I just downloaded the Fedora 14 Live-Desktop ISO and used CDBurnerXP to burn the image to a DVD. For some reason the first time I burned the image nothing showed up on the DVD when I accessed it even though CDBurnerXP said it had successfully burned to the disk. I did it again and the ISO shows up on the disk (I don't think this is right, should it be the files inside the image that show up on disk or the image file??). The problem now is my dell PC can't find the ISO when I try to boot from it. I get an error saying it can't boot from the CD. I have verified the ISO image as directed from the Fedora website. My question is how do I make a bootable CD from a Fedora Live-Desktop ISO? How can I verify that the ISO was written to the CD correctly and has anyone had any issues booting from a CD using a Dell desktop (I'm not at home at the moment so I can't check what model it is but its old enough, I've had it for about 5 years). EDIT: All that needed to be done was to burn the image to CD as an image and not a data file. The first three times failed, I'm not sure if this was because of faulty DVD's or if the write speed was too high (16x). I put in a new DVD and changed the write speed to 8x, the image was then properly burned to the disk without any errors. Thanks.
