  • Simplifying the process of compiling and running objective-c apps in GNUstep

    I just installed GNUstep (following this post: http://www.jaysonjc.com/programming/objective-c-programming-in-windows-gnustep-projectcenter.html) It says to run this code: gcc -o helloworld helloworld.m -I /GNUstep/System/Library/Headers -L /GNUstep/System/Library/Libraries -lobjc -lgnustep-base -fconstant-string-class=NSConstantString every time I want to compile. It works just fine for me. However as I'm learning and will be compiling/running apps way often (making little changes and trying again), I'd like a simpler way to do this. Is there an easier way to compile and then run the app? Or am I just being lazy?

In this demo, I talk to a picture library running in SharePoint 2010, and use ADO.NET Data Services to load up the various images loaded in the picture library. I then use the Telerik Silverlight toolset  integrated with the ADO.NET Data Services/WCF Data Services, and show a fancy coverflow like UI. Microsoft Desktop Player You can run the player from the website (shown here) or download the application for use on your local machine (link below). It allows you to easily access MS training and information in a central interface. To get the Desktop version, download the .msi file from the site… And run through the installer…   When you first start out, enter in if you’re an IT Pro, Developer and your role. Then you can decide on the resources you’re looking for such as Exchange Server, SharePoint, Windows 7, Security…etc. Here is an example of checking out a Podcast on Office 2007 setup and configuration from TechNet radio. Under Settings you can customize your search results and local resources. This helps you narrow down pertinent information for your needs. If you find something you really like, hover the pointer over the screen and you can add it to your library, share it, send feedback, and check for additional resources. If you don’t need items in your library they can be easily deleted. Under the News tab you get previews of Microsoft news items, clicking on it will open the full article in a separate browser. While you’re watching a presentation you can show or hide the details related to it. Conclusion Microsoft Desktop Player is currently in Beta, but has a lot of cool features to offer for your learning needs. You can easily find Podcasts, Webcasts, and more without having to browse all over the place. In our experience we didn’t notice any bugs, and what it offers so far works well.   • Why did Apple remove Python support in Mavericks, aka Mac OS X 10.9?

    Apple has removed Python support (at least on the Developer level) in 10.9. Python IS still on the machine in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework... but trying to link to Python using the 10.9 SDK fails. /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.9.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks does not have Python. I'm not a Pythonista, but find it interesting that Apple has made this change. I don't understand why this is done and I'm a bit annoyed that I have to remove Python from my compilation units in order to compile with 10.9 SDK. Is this a statement by Apple, along the lines of "People aren't using Python very much anymore so we're going to phase out support"? Or was something else driving the change?

  • Does it make sense to use ORM in Android development?

    Does it make sense to use an ORM in Android development or is the framework optimized for a tighter coupling between the UI and the DB layer? Background: I've just started with Android development, and my first instinct (coming from a .net background) was to look for a small object-relational mapper and other tools that help reduce boilerplate clode (e.g. POJOs + OrmLite + Lombok). However, while developing my first toy application I stumbled upon a UI class that explicitly requires a database cursor: AlphabetIndexer. That made me wonder if maybe the Android library is not suited for a strict decoupling of UI and DB layer and that I will miss out on a lot of useful, time-saving features if I try to use POJOs everywhere (instead of direct database access). Clarification: I'm quite aware of the advantages of using ORM in general, I'm specifically interested in how well the Android class library plays along with it.

    i have a simple question. For people that know and built ogre3D from source as a Static library, What is the order of which the libraries should be linked? The libraries I need to be organized are: Ogre Plugins 'libOgreMain.a' Ogre RenderSystems Boost(version 1.47)link Ogre's Dependencies The reason im asking is because in the Ogre forums, I have asked about this and didnt get a good reply...yet. The other reason is because even though i link to the boost library, i get this error: undefined reference to '_imp___ZN5boost6thread20hardware_concurrencyEv' My compiler is MinGW with CodeBlocks as the IDE And my Main Computer Im building on is Windows Vista 32 bit

  • User Productivity Kit - Powerful Packages (Part 2)

    In my first post on packages I described what a package is and how it can be used. I also started explaining some of the considerations that should be taken into account when determining how to arrange your packages. The first is when the files are interrelated and depend on one another such as an HTML file and it's graphics. A second consideration is how the files are used in your outlines. Let's say you're using a dozen Word doc files. You could place them all in a single package or put each Word doc file in a separate package but what's the right thing to do? There are several factors that will influence your decision. To understand the first, let me explain a function of UPK publishing. Take an outline in UPK that has an attachment (concept, frame link, or hyperlink) that points to a file in a package. When you publish this outline, the publishing engine will determine that there is a link to a file in the package and copy the contents of the package to the publishing destination directory. This is done to ensure that any interrelated files are kept together. For the situation where you have an HTML file with links to number of graphics files, this is a good thing. If, however, the package has a dozen unrelated Word doc files and you link to only one of them, all dozen Word documents will be copied to the publishing destination directory.  Whether or not this is a good thing is dependent on two things. First, are all of the files in the package used in the outline that you're publishing? Take an outline that includes links to all of the Word documents in that dozen document package I described earlier. For this situation, you may choose to keep all the files in a single package for convenience. A second consideration is how your organization leverages reuse in UPK. In this context, I'm referring to the link style of reuse such as when you link to the same topic from multiple UPK outlines and changes to the topic appear in both places. Take an example where you have the earlier mentioned dozen Word document package and an outline with a dozen topics in it. Each topic has an attachment pointing to one of the Word documents in the package (frame link, concept, etc.) If you're only publishing this outline, the single package probably works fine but what if you're reusing one of these topics in another outline? As I explained earlier, linking to one file in the package will result in all files in the package being copied to your published output. In this example, linking to one topic in the first outline will result in all dozen Word documents being copied to the published output. This may result in files in the output that you don't want there for business or size reasons. This is a situation in which you should consider placing each of the Word documents in it's own separate package. With each document in it's own package, that link to a single document will result in only that single package and single Word document being copied to the published output. In my last post I had described that packages are documents in the UPK library. When using the multi-user version of the UPK Developer you can leverage standard library capabilities for managing the files in these packages during the development process - capabilities such as check in / check out, history, etc. When structuring your packages take into consideration how the authors are going to be adding, modifying and deleting files from the packages. A single package is a single document in the UPK library. Like any other document in the library, a single user can check out the package and edit it at a time. If you have a large number of files in a single package and these must be modified by many users, you need to consider whether this will cause problems as multiple users compete to update the same package. If the files don't depend on each other consider placing the files in separate packages to reduce contention. In summary, consider the following when structuring your packages: Is the asset a single, standalone file or a set of files that depend on each other? Will all the files always be used together in a single outline or may only some of the files be needed based on how the content is reused across multiple outlines? Will multiple developers need to update the files in a single package or should you break it into multiple packages to reduce contention when checking out the document?     I want to install PhpStorm color scheme from XML. Official PhpStorm's IDE website says To install a theme, download the corresponging xml file, copy to ~/Library/Preferences/RubyMine10/colors/ (Mac OS X) or C:\Users\%username%.RubyMine10\config\colors\ (Windows) and restart RubyMine. Then go to IDE Settings | Editor | Colors and select your theme. However, nothing is said about Ubuntu. I tried to find anything similar to "Library" folder inside of PhpStorm folder but failed. How can I install the theme?

  • libssh2 and simultaneous connections

    I'm writing a node.js C++ module using the C library libssh2. The module is supposed to be a bridge to connect to SSH over HTTPS. Right now, I'm still in the design/learning phase of v8 API and C++, and I have a design question: libssh2 is a C library, all its methods are global. From what I see in the examples, libssh2 can only handle one connection at a time. If I want to allow simultaneous connections to different SSH servers, do I have to fork a process to completely separate the libssh2 "instances", or is forking a thread enough? I don't know enough of the separation limit used there. Any idea on how to handle this is appreciated.

  • When to use shared libraries for a web framework?

    tl;dr: I've found myself hosting a bunch of sites running on the same web framework (symfony 1.4). Would it be helpful if I moved all of the shared library code into the same directory and shared it across the sites? more I see some advantages to this: Each site takes up less disk space Library updates (an unlikely scenario) can take place across all sites I also see some disadvantages, mostly in terms of a single point of failure and the inability to have sites using different versions of the framework. My real concern, though, is performance. I hypothesize that I will see a performance increase, since the PHP code will already be cached for all sites when they call the framework. Is this a correct hypothesis?

    I need to install the library iodbc (depends on libodbc2) in my Quantal machine. Yet there is creepy dependency problem. This was replaced somehow by unixodbc which I don't have, installed. The root problem is that I need to use a new feature introduced in the latest MySQL Workbench builds (DB Migration) which uses odbc for that matter.
