  • Migrating from Forms to WPF

    We're considering migrating a WinForms app to WPF, but are just starting on the WPF learning curve now that 4.0 is out. What I'd like to do is migrate our application commands (cut, copy, paste, etc) to a WPF-like command-binding system, while still running as a WinForms app - but in such a way as to make the migration easy when we go ahead with WPF. The ideal approach would be to implement our commands using the WPF command interfaces, classes and events directly, and simply hooking the WinForms events up to them with our own dispatcher. Has anyone tried something like this or know if it might be possible?

  • How can one use the "Add view" dialog in Visual Studio efficiently when working with ASP.NET MVC?

    Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me? Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation. Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries. Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that?? Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example) EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784 Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.

  • Usage of Document() function in XSLT 1.0

    I am triggering the transformation using a .NET code, unless I add "EnableDocumentFunction" property to the XSL-Setting, the program throws error saying .. "Usage of Document() function is prohibited", Actually the program is not editable and a kind of read-only .. is it possible to edit the XSL code itself so that I can use document() function??   • How many times can you randomly generate a GUID before you risk duplicates? (.NET)

    Mathematically I suppose it's possible that even two random GUIDs generated using the built in method in the .NET framework are identical, but roughly how likely are they to clash if you generate hundreds or thousands? If you generated one for every copy of Windows in the world, would they clash? The reason I ask is because I have a program that creates a lot of objects, and destroys some too, and I am wondering about the likelihood of any of those objects (including the destroyed ones) having identical GUIDs.

  • Recovering From An SQL Injection

    Let's not go so far as to say that I'm paranoid, but I've been spending hour after hour learning how to prevent SQL injections (and XSS for what it's worth). What I'm wondering is that a SQL injection doesn't seem like it would do permanent harm to my database if I've made daily backups. Doesn't importing yesterday's copy of my tables just restore them and then I can be on my merry way?

  • jQuery Validation Plugin + equalTo Not Working

    Hey guys, Here is what I am currently using to attempt to validate a form. When I press submit with no values entered into the form, I get the error messages for each of the inputs as expected. However, no matter what I put in newpassword2 or newemail2 they never 'pass' validation. I've tried everything from copy and paste to making them one letter each to no success. Perhaps I am not using the equalTo attribute correctly... I've also verified that all the names of the selectors agree with the input id's on the form. Also, all of the inputs are contained within the form, so there aren't any outside of the form tags (I read that was an issue with someone else). $(document).ready(function() { $("#account_data").validate({ rules: { newpassword1: { required: true }, newpassword2: { equalTo: "#newpassword1" }, newemail1: { required: true, email: true }, newemail2: { equalTo: "#newemail1" } } }); }); Any help would be extremely appreciated!   • How do you access URL text following the # sign through Java?

    Using Java (.jsp or whatever) is there a way where I can send a request for this page: http://www.mystore.com/store/shelf.jsp?category=mens#page=2 and have the Java code parse the URL and see the #page=2 and respond accordingly? Basically, I'm looking for the Java code that allows me to access the characters following the hash tag. The reason I'm doing this is that I want to load subsequent pages via AJAX (on my shelf) and then allow the user to copy and paste the URL and send it to a friend. Without the ability of Java being able to read the characters following the hash tag I'm uncertain as to how I would manipulate the URL with Javascript in a way that the server would be able to also read without causing the page to re-load. I'm having trouble even figuring out how to access/see the entire URL (http://www.mystore.com/store/shelf.jsp?category=mens#page=2) from within my Java code...

  • When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

    /is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

    I am having some problems using subprocess.call to export a database using mysqldump. I'm using Python 3.1 installed on Windows 7. from time import gmtime, strftime import subprocess DumpDir = "c:/apps/sqlbackup/"; DumpFile = "mysqldump-" + strftime("%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S", gmtime()) + ".sql"; params = [r"mysqldump --user root --password=mypassword --force --flush-privileges --compress --comments mydatabase --result-file=" + DumpDir + DumpFile]; subprocess.call(params, shell=True); The above code causes a blank file to be created in the DumpDir. I've tried getting python to print the command so I can test it via the CMD prompt using: print(subprocess.list2cmdline(params)); If I paste the output to the CMD prompt and execute it, everything works fine. Any ideas? I'm new to Python, so I am sure the answer is simple but I've tried so many variations to get this working that I just can't figure this out.

I need help, I don't want to make a copy paste of all the code. the linq query is huge, and it s nested with 5 or 6 queries. also I have to do this on 12 different methods.   • XNA or C# Pop-up progress bar for the LoadContent() method

    Hey people, We wrote a small game using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio 3.1. The LoadContent() takes a long time because, other than loading models, and config files, we're also running some one-time (per run) terrain analysis. We are not C# or XNA programmers... we're Java programmers, and want to be able to give the user some feedback that the system is loading. Preferably, this will be through a simple pop-up with a progress bar that will say something simple like "loading please wait". The progress bar doesn't have to be a 0 to 1 progress bar, it can instead be one of those 'back and forth' progress bars. I was hoping for some quick copy-paste ready code to just do that - as it is not a central piece of our project, nor do we have a need to delve into too much documentation.   • PDF Report generation

    EDIT : I completed this project using ABCpdf. For anyone interested, I love this product and their support is A+. Everything I listed as a 'Con' for the HTML - PDF solution was easily doable in ABCpdf. I've been charged with creating a data driven pdf report. After reviewing the plethora of options, I have narrowed it down to 2. I need you all to to help me decide, or offer alternatives I haven't considered. Here are the requirements: 100% Data driven Eventually PDF (a stop in HTML is fine, so long as it is converted) Can be run with multiple sets of data (the layout is always the same, the data is variable) Contains normal analysis-style copy (saved in DB with html markup) Contains tables (data for tables is generated at run-time) Header/Page # on each page Table of Contents .NET (VB or C#) Done quickly Now, because of the fact that the report is going to be generated with multiple sets of data, I don't think a stamped pdf template will work since I won't know how long or how many pages a certain piece of the report could require. So, I think my best options are: Programmatic creation using an iText-like solution. Generate in HTML and convert to PDF using a third-party application (ABCPdf is the tool I have played with so far) Both solutions have their pro's and con's. Programmatic solution: Pros: Flexible Easy page numbering/page header/table of contents Free Cons: Time consuming (to write a layer on top of iText to do what I need and keep maintainable) Since the copy is already stored in the db with html markup, I would have to parse through the data before I place it into the pdf, ensuring I don't have to break the paragraph into chunks so I can apply bold, italic, underline, etc. to specific phrases. This seems like a huge PITA, and I hope I am wrong about that assumption. HTML - PDF Pros: Easy to generate from db (no parsing necessary) Many tools for conversion Uses technology I am already familiar with Built-in "Print Preview" - not a req, but nice Cons: (Edited after project completion. All of my assumptions were incorrect and ABCpdf is awesome) 1. Almost impossible to generate page headers - Not True 2. Very difficult to generate page numbers Not True 3. Nearly impossible to generate table of contents Not True 4. (Cross-browser support isn't a con; Since its internal, I can dictate what browser to use) 5. Conversion tool quirks - may not convert exactly as rendered in browser Not True 6. Overall, I think it would be very hard to format the HTML exactly as I would want it to appear/convert to PDF. Not True That's it - I need the communitys help in deciding which way I should go. I might be wrong about some of my Pro/Con assumptions. If I am, please tell me. All thoughts and suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks
