• Nothing = String.Empty (Why are these equal?)

  I find it very puzzling that null equals String.Empty in VB.NET. There must be an explanation for it that I'm not understanding. Somehow, when the equality of String.Empty (which has an object type of string) is tested against Nothing (which has no type) the test returns true. It just seems like a turn around in logic to me. In SQL if I were to compare an empty char or varchar against a null value, the test wouldn't return true. A null value is not the same as an empty string in this case. Yet in VB.NET they are equal. I'd love it if someone could provide a good explanation around this.

  I'm new to Python... and coming from a mostly Java background, if that accounts for anything. I'm trying to understand polymorphism in Python. Maybe the problem is that I'm expecting the concepts I already know to project into Python. But I put together the following test code: class animal(object): "empty animal class" class dog(animal): "empty dog class" myDog = dog() print myDog.__class__ is animal print myDog.__class__ is dog From the polymorphism I'm used to (e.g. java's instanceof), I would expect both of these statements to print true, as an instance of dog is an animal and also is a dog. But my output is: False True What am I missing?

  I have been all around with this question and I can't find the correct answer! So, behold, the description of my question: I'm working in J2ME, I have my gameloop that do the following: public void run() { Graphics g = this.getGraphics(); while (running) { long diff = System.currentTimeMillis() - lastLoop; lastLoop = System.currentTimeMillis(); input(); this.level.doLogic(); render(g, diff); try { Thread.sleep(10); } catch (InterruptedException e) { stop(e); } } } so it's just a basic gameloop, the doLogic() function calls for all the logic functions of the characters in the scene and render(g, diff) calls the animateChar function of every character on scene, following this, the animChar function in the Character class sets up everything in the screen as this: protected void animChar(long diff) { this.checkGravity(); this.move((int) ((diff * this.dx) / 1000), (int) ((diff * this.dy) / 1000)); if (this.acumFrame > this.framerate) { this.nextFrame(); this.acumFrame = 0; } else { this.acumFrame += diff; } } This ensures me that everything must to move according to the time that the machine takes to go from cycle to cycle (remember it's a phone, not a gaming rig). I'm sure it's not the most efficient way to achieve this behavior so I'm totally open for criticism of my programming skills in the comments, but here my problem: When I make I character jump, what I do is that I put his dy to a negative value, say -200 and I set the boolean jumping to true, that makes the character go up, and then I have this function called checkGravity() that ensure that everything that goes up has to go down, checkGravity also checks for the character being over platforms so I will strip it down a little for the sake of your time: public void checkGravity() { if (this.jumping) { this.jumpSpeed += 10; if (this.jumpSpeed > 0) { this.jumping = false; this.falling = true; } this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; } if (this.falling) { this.jumpSpeed += 10; if (this.jumpSpeed > 200) this.jumpSpeed = 200; this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; if (this.collidesWithPlatform()) { this.falling = false; this.standing = true; this.jumping = false; this.jumpSpeed = 0; this.dy = this.jumpSpeed; } } } So, the problem is, that this function updates the dy regardless of the diff, making the characters fly like Superman in slow machines, and I have no idea how to implement the diff factor so that when a character is jumping, his speed decrement in a proportional way to the game speed. • NHibernate - is property lazy loading possible?

  I've got some binary data that I store and was going to separate this out into a separate table so it could be lazy loaded. However, i then came across this post by Ayende (http://ayende.com/Blog/archive/2010/01/27/nhibernate-new-feature-lazy-properties.aspx) which suggests that property lazy loading is now possible. I have added the lazy="true" attribute to my property mapping but the field is still loaded from the database (I am using a simple text field to test). My query: return _session.CreateQuery("from Product") .SetMaxResults(1) .UniqueResult<Product>(); Mapping: <property name="Description" type="string" column="FullDescription" lazy="true"/> Has anyone been able to get this working? Personally I prefer this approach than having to add another table to my database.

  I have a text file with a strange character encoding that I'd like to convert to standard UTF-8. I have managed to get part of the way: $ file myfile.txt myfile.txt: Non-ISO extended-ASCII text, with LF, NEL line endings $ iconv -f ascii -t utf-8 myfile.txt > myfile.txt.utf8 $ file myfile.txt.utf8 myfile.txt.utf8: UTF-8 Unicode text, with LF, NEL line endings ## edit myfile.txt.utf8 using nano, to fix failed character conversions (mostly åäö) $ file myfile.txt.utf8 myfile.txt.utf8: UTF-8 Unicode text, with LF, NEL line endings However, I can't figure out how to convert the line endings. So I now need to access some information, I have created another .svc file called Project.svc and IProject.cs, this contains the same info as resource (apart from the type is Project) But this now means I have another webservice, surley this is not right!?

• Java - Is Set.contains() broken on OpenJDK 6?

  Hey, I've come across a really strange problem. I have written a simple Deck class which represents a standard 52 card deck of playing cards. The class has a method missingCards() which returns the set of all cards which have been drawn from the deck. If I try and compare two identical sets of missing cards using .equals() I'm told they are different, and if I check to see if a set contains an element that I know is there using .contains() I am returned false.   I am outputting a textbox to the page using the Html helpers. I want to add the disabled attribute dynamically based on whether or not a boolean value in my model is true or false. My model has a method that returns a boolean value: <% =Model.IsMyTextboxEnabled() %> I currently render the textbox like follows, but I want to now enabled or disable it: <% =Html.TextBox("MyTextbox", Model.MyValuenew { id = "MyTextbox", @class = "MyClass" })%> If the return value of Model.IsMyTextboxEnabled() == true I want the following to be output: <input class="MyClass" id="MyTextbox" name="MyTextbox" type="text" value="" /> If it == false, I want it to output as: <input class="MyClass" id="MyTextbox" name="MyTextbox" type="text" value="" disabled /> What is the cleanest way to do this?

• How to run applications as root?

  I am having some strange issue with Kate and Kwrite. When I click on Open File, it crashes with segmentation fault. I am a complete newbie to Linux, and I think the issue is that I am not running the application as root. How do I run applications as root in Ubuntu? Is it bad practice to do this? What is the purpose of the whole root thing, where even though we need to use root so frequently, it is not utilized as default?
