  • listview not updating,inserting

    - by raging_boner
    Data entered in textboxes is not getting updated in database. In debug mode I see that textbox1 and textbox2 in ItemUpdating event contain the same values as they had before calling ItemUpdating. Here's my listview control: <asp:ListView ID="ListView1" runat="server" onitemediting="ListView1_ItemEditing" onitemupdating="ListView1_ItemUpdating" oniteminserting="ListView1_ItemInserting"> //LayoutTemplate removed <ItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:Label ID="Label2" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("id")%>'></asp:Label><br /> <asp:Label ID="Label3" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text1")%>'></asp:Label> </td> <td> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton2" CommandName="Edit" runat="server">Edit</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton4" CommandName="Delete" runat="server">Delete</asp:LinkButton> </td> </ItemTemplate> <EditItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("id")%>'></asp:Label> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text1")%>' TextMode="MultiLine" /> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server" Text='<%#Eval("text2")%>' Height="100" TextMode="MultiLine" /> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton1" CommandName="Update" CommandArgument='<%# Eval("id")%>' runat="server">Update</asp:LinkButton> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton5" CommandName="Cancel" runat="server">Cancel</asp:LinkButton> </td> </EditItemTemplate> <InsertItemTemplate> <td align="center" valign="top"> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox3" runat="server" TextMode="MultiLine" Height="100"></asp:TextBox> <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox4" runat="server" Height="100" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox><br/> <asp:LinkButton ID="LinkButton3" runat="server">Insert</asp:LinkButton> </td> </InsertItemTemplate> </asp:ListView> Codebehind file: protected void ListView1_ItemEditing(object sender, ListViewEditEventArgs e) { ListView1.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; BindList(); } protected void ListView1_ItemUpdating(object sender, ListViewUpdateEventArgs e) { ListViewItem myItem = ListView1.Items[ListView1.EditIndex]; Label id = (Label)myItem.FindControl("Label1"); int dbid = int.Parse(id.Text); TextBox text1 = (TextBox)myItem.FindControl("Textbox1"); TextBox text2 = (TextBox)myItem.FindControl("Textbox2"); //tried to work withNewValues below, but they don't work, "null reference" error is being thrown //text1.Text = e.NewValues["text1"].ToString(); //text2.Text = e.NewValues["text2"].ToString(); //odbc connection routine removed. //i know that there should be odbc parameteres: comm = new OdbcCommand("UPDATE table SET text1 = '" + text1.Text + "', text2 = '" + text2.Text + "' WHERE id = '" + dbid + "'", connection); comm.ExecuteNonQuery(); conn.Close(); ListView1.EditIndex = -1; //here I databind ListView1 } What's wrong with updating of text1.Text, text2.Text in ItemUpdating event?   • Custom edit box - how to do it?

    - by user3834459
    I'd like to create a new text editor with some non-standard capabilities for the edit box where you would normally type your code (and do syntax highlighting). Since I'd like to have complete control over this I was thinking how should I proceed.. my target is primarily linux and I was thinking to use GTK+ as GUI toolkit. Since I'm a newbie I'm not sure how custom controls are drawn/rendered. Should I consider using openGL to draw a control from scratch? That doesn't sound right to be honest but I have no idea on how to do it.. The "nonstandard capabilities" would include drawing stuff on the control (shapes and boxes) at any position, being able to write into multiple areas.. all stuff you can't normally do with an edit box. Question: How should I create a GTK+ nonstandard GUI control like an edit box that has the following capabilities: edit text, select text, delete text, draw message boxes on top of it, draw images inside it (under and/or on top of the text), insert text into multiple places at the same time? Should I subclass an edit box control or should I "render" an entirely new one with openGL or such? I'm still in the design phase (I even need to identify the frameworks I should use) and I've taken a look at the Chromium project (GTK+). I haven't found anything that suited my problem

  • Box Selection and Multi-Line Editing with VS 2010

    - by ScottGu
    This is the twenty-second in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. I’ve already covered some of the code editor improvements in the VS 2010 release.  In particular, I’ve blogged about the Code Intellisense Improvements, new Code Searching and Navigating Features, HTML, ASP.NET and JavaScript Snippet Support, and improved JavaScript Intellisense.  Today’s blog post covers a small, but nice, editor improvement with VS 2010 – the ability to use “Box Selection” when performing multi-line editing.  This can eliminate keystrokes and enables some slick editing scenarios. [In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Box Selection Box selection is a feature that has been in Visual Studio for awhile (although not many people knew about it).  It allows you to select a rectangular region of text within the code editor by holding down the Alt key while selecting the text region with the mouse.  With VS 2008 you could then copy or delete the selected text. VS 2010 now enables several more capabilities with box selection including: Text Insertion: Typing with box selection now allows you to insert new text into every selected line Paste/Replace: You can now paste the contents of one box selection into another and have the content flow correctly Zero-Length Boxes: You can now make a vertical selection zero characters wide to create a multi-line insert point for new or copied text These capabilities can be very useful in a variety of scenarios.  Some example scenarios: change access modifiers (private->public), adding comments to multiple lines, setting fields, or grouping multiple statements together. Great 3 Minute Box-Selection Video Demo Brittany Behrens from the Visual Studio Editor Team has an excellent 3 minute video that shows off a few cool VS 2010 multi-line code editing scenarios with box selection:   Watch it to learn a few ways you can use this new box selection capability to optimize your typing in VS 2010 even further: Hope this helps, Scott P.S. You can learn more about the VS Editor by following the Visual Studio Team Blog or by following @VSEditor on Twitter.

  • Using rounded corners in modern websites with CSS3

    - by nikolaosk
    This is going to be the sixth post in a series of posts regarding HTML 5. You can find the other posts here , here, here , here and here.In this post I will provide a hands-on example on how to use rounded corners (rounded corners in CSS3) in your website. I think this is the feature that is most required in the new modern websites.Most websites look great with their lovely round panels and rounded corner tab style menus. We could achieve that effect earlier but we should resort to complex CSS rules and images. I will show you how to accomplish this great feature with the power of CSS 3.We will not use Javascript.Javascript is required for IE 7, IE 8 and the notorious IE 6. The best solution for implementing corners using CSS and Javascript without using images is Nifty corners cube. There are detailed information how to achieve this in the link I provided. This solution is tested in earlier vesrions of IE (IE 6,IE 7,IE 8) and Opera,Firefox,Safari. In order to be absolutely clear this is not (and could not be) a detailed tutorial on HTML 5. There are other great resources for that.Navigate to the excellent interactive tutorials of W3School.Another excellent resource is HTML 5 Doctor.Two very nice sites that show you what features and specifications are implemented by various browsers and their versions are http://caniuse.com/ and http://html5test.com/. At this times Chrome seems to support most of HTML 5 specifications.Another excellent way to find out if the browser supports HTML 5 and CSS 3 features is to use the Javascript lightweight library Modernizr.In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like.You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. You can download it here.Before I go on with the actual demo I will use the (http://www.caniuse.com) to see the support for web fonts from the latest versions of modern browsers.Please have a look at the picture below. We see that all the latest versions of modern browsers support this feature.We can see that even IE 9 supports this feature.  Let's move on with the actual demo. This is going to be a rather simple demo.I create a simple HTML 5 page. The markup follows and it is very easy to use and understand <!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>      <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>    </div>        <div id="main">          <h2>HTML 5</h2>                        <p id="panel1">            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. The HTML standard defines a single language that can be written in HTML and XML. It attempts to solve issues found in previous iterations of HTML and addresses the needs of Web Applications, an area previously not adequately covered by HTML.          </p>      </div>             </body>  </html>Then I need to write the various CSS rules that style this markup. I will name it style.css   body{        line-height: 38px;        width: 1024px;        background-color:#eee;        text-align:center;      }#panel1 { margin:auto; text-align:left; background-color:#77cdef;width:400px; height:250px; padding:15px;font-size:16px;font-family:tahoma;color:#fff;border-radius: 20px;}Have a look below to see what my page looks like in IE 10. This is possible through the border-radious property. The colored panel has all four corners rounded with the same radius.We can add a border to the rounded corner panel by adding this property declaration in the #panel1,  border:4px #000 solid;We can have even better visual effects if we specify a radius for each corner.This is the updated version of the style.css. body{        line-height: 38px;        width: 1024px;        background-color:#eee;        text-align:center;      }#panel1 { margin:auto; text-align:left; background-color:#77cdef;border:4px #000 solid;width:400px; height:250px; padding:15px;font-size:16px;font-family:tahoma;color:#fff;border-top-left-radius: 20px;border-top-right-radius: 70px;border-bottom-right-radius: 20px;border-bottom-left-radius: 70px;} This is how my page looks in Firefox 15.0.1  In this final example I will show you how to style with CSS 3 (rounded corners) a horizontal navigation menu. This is the new version of the HTML markup<!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en">  <head>    <title>HTML 5, CSS3 and JQuery</title>    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=utf-8" >    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css">       </head>  <body>      <div id="header">      <h1>Learn cutting edge technologies</h1>    </div>        <div id="nav"><ul><li><a class="mymenu" id="activelink" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">Main</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">HTML 5</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">CSS 3</a></li><li><a class="mymenu" href="http://weblogs.asp.net/controlpanel/blogs/posteditor.aspx?SelectedNavItem=Posts§ionid=1153&postid=8934038#">JQuery</a></li></ul></div>        <div id="main">          <h2>HTML 5</h2>                        <p id="panel1">            HTML5 is the latest version of HTML and XHTML. • How to add locale aware CSS to an individual component in ADF Faces.

    - by [email protected]
    When creating a skin in ADF Faces, it's (relatively) easy to add locale aware CSS using the :rtl psuedo-class on the end of a skinning key.  Example:af|inputListOfValues::content {  padding-left: 3px;}af|inputListOfValues::content:rtl {  padding-left: 0px;  padding-right: 3px;}In this example, we want some padding before the start of the text in the content element of the component.  In right to left locales, the start of the text is on the right side by default, so we need to change the padding from the left to the right.Let's say, however, that you want to specify a locale aware CSS style on an individual component using the contentStyle attribute.  There is a handy ADF Faces EL function to help you out here: isRTL.  For our example, let's say we want an inputText component whose text content is 'end' aligned.  If you weren't considering RTL locales, you could code this as:<af:inputText id="idInputTextRight" label="right aligned" value="Test"                    contentStyle="text-align: right;"/>This, however, will be right aligned regardless of locale. This is where isRTL() comes to the rescue.  This is how we would code this to be locale aware:<af:inputText id="idInputTextEnd" label="end aligned" value="Test"                     contentStyle="text-align: #{af:isRTL()?'left':'right'};"/> The af:isRTL() EL function returns true if we are rendering in RTL, so we can use it to pick the appropriate text alignment.

  • Insert Special Characters & Coding in Online Forms in Firefox

    - by Asian Angel
    If you are active in forums or comment areas on different websites then you most likely use some type of special characters, HTML, or other code throughout the day. Now you can easily insert commonly used “items” with the SKeys extension for Firefox. Your New Special Text Edit Bar After installing the extension you will see the new toolbar that has been added to your browser. These are the kinds of text that can be added to online comment areas, forums, or other website areas that allow their use: Special characters HTML tags BB codes Wiki characters All that you will need to do is click on the appropriate special character or code to insert it into the website text area. The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas. • Introduction to Extended Events

    - by extended_events
    For those fighting with all the Extended Event terminology, let's step back and have a small overall Introduction to Extended Events. This post will give you a simplified end to end view through some of the elements in Extended Events. Before we start, let’s review the first Extented Events that we are going to use: -          Events: The SQL Server code is populated with event calls that, by default, are disabled. Adding events to a session enables those event calls. Once enabled, they will execute the set of functionality defined by the session. -          Target: This is an Extended Event Object that can be used to log event information. Also it is important to understand the following Extended Event concept: -          Session: Server Object created by the user that defines functionality to be executed every time a set of events happen.   It’s time to write a small “Hello World” using Extended Events. This will help understand the above terms. We will use: -          Event sqlserver. error_reported: This event gets fired every time that an error happens in the server. -          Target package0.asynchronous_file_target: This target stores the event data in disk. -          Session: We will create a session that sends all the error_reported events to the ring buffer. Before we get started, a quick note: Don’t run this script in a production environment. Even though, we are going just going to be raise very low severity user errors, we don't want to introduce noise in our servers. -- TRIES TO ELIMINATE PREVIOUS SESSIONS BEGIN TRY       DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER END TRY BEGIN CATCH END CATCH GO   -- CREATES THE SESSION CREATE EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER ADD EVENT sqlserver.error_reported ADD TARGET package0.asynchronous_file_target -- CONFIGURES THE FILE TARGET (set filename = 'c:\temp\data1.xel' , metadatafile = 'c:\temp\data1.xem') GO   -- STARTS THE SESSION ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = START GO   -- GENERATES AN ERROR RAISERROR (N'HELLO WORLD', -- Message text.            1, -- Severity,            1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); -- Other parameters GO   -- STOPS LISTENING FOR THE EVENT ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = STOP GO   -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER GO -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER select CAST(event_data as XML) as event_data from sys.fn_xe_file_target_read_file ('c:\temp\data1*.xel','c:\temp\data1*.xem', null, null) This query will output the event data with our first hello world in the Extended Event format: <event name="error_reported" package="sqlserver" id="100" version="1" timestamp="2010-02-27T03:08:04.210Z"><data name="error"><value>50000</value><text /></data><data name="severity"><value>1</value><text /></data><data name="state"><value>1</value><text /></data><data name="user_defined"><value>true</value><text /></data><data name="message"><value>HELLO WORLD</value><text /></data></event> More on parsing event data in this post: Reading event data 101 Now let's move that lets move on to the other three Extended Event objects: -          Actions. This Extended Objects actions get executed before events are published (stored in buffers to be transferred to the targets). Currently they are used additional data (like the TSQL Statement related to an event, the session, the user) or generate a mini dump.   -          Predicates: Predicates express are logical expressions that specify what predicates to fire (E.g. only listen to errors with a severity greater than 16). This are composed of two Extended Objects: o   Predicate comparators: Defines an operator for a pair of values. Examples: §  Severity > 16 §  error_message = ‘Hello World!!’ o   Predicate sources: These are values that can be also used by the predicates. They are generic data that isn’t usually provided in the event (similar to the actions). §  Sqlserver.username = ‘Tintin’ As logical expressions they can be combined using logical operators (and, or, not).  Note: This pair always has to be first an event field or predicate source and then a value         Let’s do another small Example. We will trigger errors but we will use the ones that have severity >= 10 and the error message != ‘filter’. To verify this we will use the action sql_text that will attach the sql statement to the event data: -- TRIES TO ELIMINATE PREVIOUS SESSIONS BEGIN TRY       DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER END TRY BEGIN CATCH END CATCH GO   -- CREATES THE SESSION CREATE EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER ADD EVENT sqlserver.error_reported       (ACTION (sqlserver.sql_text) WHERE severity = 2 and (not (message = 'filter'))) ADD TARGET package0.asynchronous_file_target -- CONFIGURES THE FILE TARGET (set filename = 'c:\temp\data2.xel' , metadatafile = 'c:\temp\data2.xem') GO   -- STARTS THE SESSION ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = START GO   -- THIS EVENT WILL BE FILTERED BECAUSE SEVERITY != 2 RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 1, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO -- THIS EVENT WILL BE FILTERED BECAUSE MESSAGE = 'FILTER' RAISERROR (N'FILTER', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO -- THIS ERROR WILL BE PUBLISHED RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); GO   -- STOPS LISTENING FOR THE EVENT ALTER EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER STATE = STOP GO   -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER DROP EVENT SESSION test_session ON SERVER GO -- REMOVES THE EVENT SESSION FROM THE SERVER select CAST(event_data as XML) as event_data from sys.fn_xe_file_target_read_file ('c:\temp\data2*.xel','c:\temp\data2*.xem', null, null)   This last statement will output one event with the following data: <event name="error_reported" package="sqlserver" id="100" version="1" timestamp="2010-03-05T23:15:05.481Z">   <data name="error">     <value>50000</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="severity">     <value>2</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="state">     <value>1</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="user_defined">     <value>true</value>     <text />   </data>   <data name="message">     <value>PUBLISH</value>     <text />   </data>   <action name="sql_text" package="sqlserver">     <value>-- THIS ERROR WILL BE PUBLISHED RAISERROR (N'PUBLISH', 2, 1, 7, 3, N'abcde'); </value>     <text />   </action> </event> If you see more events, check if you have deleted previous event files. If so, please run   -- Deletes previous event files EXEC SP_CONFIGURE GO EXEC SP_CONFIGURE 'xp_cmdshell', 1 GO RECONFIGURE GO XP_CMDSHELL 'del c:\temp\data*.xe*' GO   or delete them manually.   More Info on Events: Extended Event Events More Info on Targets: Extended Event Targets More Info on Sessions: Extended Event Sessions More Info on Actions: Extended Event Actions More Info on Predicates: Extended Event Predicates Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • Hide email adress with JavaScript

    - by Martin Aleksander
    I read somewhere that hiding email address behind JavaScript code, could reduce spam bots harvesting the email address. <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript"> var a = "Red"; var t = "no"; var doc = document; var b = "ITpro"; var ad = a; ad += "@"; ad += b; ad += "."; ad += t; var mt = "ma"; mt += "il"; mt += "to"; var text = ""; if (text == null || text.length == 0) text = ad; doc.write("<"+"a hr"+"ef=\""+mt+":"+ad+"\">"+text+"</"+"a>"); </script> This will not display the actual email-address in the sourcecode of the page, but it will display and work like a normal link for human users. Is it any point of doing this? Will it reduce spam bots, or is it just nonsense that might slow down performance of the page because of the JavaScript?

  • ASP.NET: Building tree picker dialog using jQuery UI and TreeView control

    - by DigiMortal
    Selecting things from dialogs and data represented as trees are very common things we see in business applications. In this posting I will show you how to use ASP.NET TreeView control and jQuery UI dialog component to build picker dialog that hosts tree data. Source code You can find working example with source code from my examples repository in GitHub. Please feel free to give me feedback about my examples. Source code repository GitHub Building dialog box As I don’t like to invent wheels then I will use jQuery UI to solve the question related to dialogs. If you are not sure how to include jQuery UI to your page then take a look at source code - GitHub also allows you to browse files without downloading them. I add some jQuery based JavaScript to my page head to get dialog and button work. <script type="text/javascript">     $(function () {         $("#dialog-form").dialog({             autoOpen: false,             modal: true         });         $("#pick-node")             .button()             .click(function () {                 $("#dialog-form").dialog("open");                 return false;             });     }); </script> Here is the mark-up of our form’s main content area. <div id="dialog-form" title="Select node">     <asp:TreeView ID="TreeView1" runat="server" ShowLines="True"          ClientIDMode="Static" HoverNodeStyle-CssClass="SelectedNode">         <Nodes>             <asp:TreeNode Text="Root" Value="Root">                 <asp:TreeNode Text="Child1" Value="Child1">                     <asp:TreeNode Text="Child1.1" Value="Child1.1" />                     <asp:TreeNode Text="Child1.2" Value="Child1.2" />                 </asp:TreeNode>                 <asp:TreeNode Text="Child2" Value="Child2">                     <asp:TreeNode Text="Child2.1" Value="Child2.1" />                     <asp:TreeNode Text="Child2.2" Value="Child2.2" />                 </asp:TreeNode>             </asp:TreeNode>         </Nodes>     </asp:TreeView>     &nbsp; </div> <button id="pick-node">Pick user</button> Notice that our mark-up is very compact for what we will achieve. If you are going to use it in some real-world application then this mark-up gets even shorter – I am sure that in most cases the data you display in TreeView comes from database or some domain specific data source. Hacking TreeView TreeView needs some little hacking to make it work as client-side component. Be warned that if you need more than I show you here you need to write a lot of JavaScript code. For more advanced scenarios I suggest you to use some jQuery based tree component. This example works for you if you need something done quickly. Number one problem is getting over the postbacks because in our scenario postbacks only screw up things. Also we need to find a way how to let our client-side code to know that something was selected from TreeView. We solve these to problems at same time: let’s move to JavaScript links. We have to make sure that when user clicks the node then information is sent to some JavaScript function. Also we have to make sure that this function returns something that is not processed by browser. My function is here. <script type="text/javascript">     function         $("#dialog-form").dialog("close");         alert("You selected: " + value + " - " + text);         return undefined;     } </script> Notice that this function returns undefined. You get the better idea why I did so if you look at server-side code that corrects NavigateUrl properties of TreeView nodes. protected override void OnPreRender(EventArgs e) {     base.OnPreRender(e);                 if (IsPostBack)         return;     SetSelectNodeUrls(TreeView1.Nodes); } private void SetSelectNodeUrls(TreeNodeCollection nodes) {     foreach (TreeNode node in nodes)     {         node.NavigateUrl = "javascript:selectNode('" + node.Value +                             "','" + node.Text + "');";         SetSelectNodeUrls(node.ChildNodes);     }        } Now we have TreeView that renders nodes the way that postback doesn’t happen anymore. Instead of postback our callback function is used and provided with selected values. In this function we are free to use node text and value as we like. Result I applied some more bells and whistles and sample data to source code to make my sample more informative. So, here is my final dialog box. Seems very basic but it is not hard to make it look more professional using style sheets. Conclusion jQuery components and ASP.NET controls have both their strong sides and weaknesses. In this posting I showed you how you can quickly produce good results when combining jQuery  and ASP.NET controls without pushing to the limits. We used simple hack to get over the postback issue of TreeView control and we made it work as client-side component that is initialized in server. You can find many other good combinations that make your UI more user-friendly and easier to use.

  • How does font rendering actually work?

    - by Andrea
    I realize that I know essentially nothing about the way fonts get rendered in my computer. From what I can observe, font rendering is generally made in a consistent way throughout the system. For instance, the subpixel font hinting settings that I configure in my DE control panel have influence on text which appears on window borders, in my browser, in my text editor and so on. (I should observe that some Java applications show a noticeable difference, so I guess they are using a different font rendering mechanism). What I get from the above is that probably all applications that need font rendering make use of some OS (or DE)-wide library. On the other hand, browsers usually manage their own rendering through a rendering engine, that takes care of positioning various items - including text - according to specific flow rules. I am not sure how these two facts are compatible. I would assume that the browser would have to ask the OS to draw a glyph at a given position, but how can it manage the flow of text without knowing beforehand how much space the glyph will take? Are there separate calls to determine the glyph sizes, so that the browser can manage the flow as if characters were little boxes that are later filled in by the OS? (Although this does not take care of kerning). Or is the OS responsible for drawing a whole text area, including text flow? Does the OS return the rendered glyph as a bitmap and leaves it to the application to draw that on the screen?

  • Finding Buried Controls

    - by Bunch
    This post is pretty specific to an issue I had but still has some ideas that could be applied in other scenarios. The problem I had was updating a few buttons so their Text values could be set in the code behind which had a method to grab the proper value from an external source. This was so that if the application needed to be installed by a customer using a language other than English or needed a different notation for the button's Text they could simply update the database. Most of the time this was no big deal. However I had one instance where the button was part of a control, the button had no set ID and that control was only found in a dll. So there was no markup to edit for the Button. Also updating the dll was not an option so I had to make the best of what I had to work with. In the cs file for the aspx file with the control on it I added the Page_LoadComplete. The problem button was within a GridView so I added a foreach to go through each GridViewRow and find the button I needed. Since I did not have an ID to work with besides a random ctl00$main$DllControl$gvStuff$ctl03$ctl05 using the GridView's FindControl was out. I ended up looping through each GridViewRow, then if a RowState equaled Edit loop through the Cells, each control in the Cell and check each control to see if it held a Panel that contained the button. If the control was a Panel I could then loop through the controls in the Panel, find the Button that had text of "Update" (that was the hard coded part) and change it using the method to return the proper value from the database. if (rowState.Contains("Edit")){  foreach (DataControlFieldCell rowCell in gvr.Cells)  {   foreach (Control ctrl in rowCell.Controls)   {    if (ctrl.GetType() == typeof(Panel))     {     foreach (Control childCtrl in ctrl.Controls)     {      if (childCtrl.GetType() == typeof(Button))      {       Button update = (Button)childCtrl;       if (update.Text == "Update")       {        update.Text = method to return the external value for the button's text;       }      }     }    }   }  }} Tags: ASP.Net, CSharp

  • Pasting from vim in terminal to Google Docs (Firefox + Vimperator) - need to understand

    - by LIttle Ancient Forest Kami
    I had some trouble with copy-pasting text from vim in terminal to Google Docs (aka Drive) document (hereafter GDd) in FF browser (with Vimperator). Note: I have a file opened in Vim 7.2 in terminal :version displays both +clipboard and +xterm-clipboard I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so I don't think that's Unity-related I want to use Vim, not GVim, nor gedit... I'm avid fan of mouseless navigation, so solution with mouse was not what I wanted. I have the solution, but I need understanding. What I tried and where it gets me: Yanking whole file text via: ggvGy allows me to: paste it via mouse middle button, NOT with Ctrl+v or Shift+Insert here, in text area for entering question text in gedit but NOT in GDd where I want it pasted, even if I switch Vimperator to pass-through mode with Insert does NOT show in XClip after xclip -o From gedit, I can copy-paste the text into GDd (Vimperator's pass-through mode not required). :%! !xclip -i (or :first, last) reports whole file (all lines, to be precise) as filtered, though shell returns 1 `xclip -o' returns nothing (is empty) or returns previously copied value with 2. no surprise, but I can't paste at all not only to GDd but also to gedit or here setting clipboard (:set clipboard=unnamed) to unnamed doesn't help using "+y or "*y on whole file text actually does the trick So, the question (it's actually three, say "split" and I will): why middle mouse button pastes different things than Ctrl+v and how to know what will be pasted with each? why just yanking (without registers) works with mouse but not with keyboard / XClip? why didn't unnamed register help? After setting, it should make unnamed and * registers same?

  • C++ Windows Forms application unhandled exception error when textbox empty

    - by cmorris1441
    I'm building a temperature conversion application in Visual Studio for a C++ course. It's a Windows Forms application and the code that I've written is below. There's other code to of course, but I'm not sure you need it to help me. My problem is, when I run the application if I don't have anything entered into either the txtFahrenheit or txtCelsius2 textboxes I get the following error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.FormatException' occurred in mscorlib.dll" The application only works right now when a number is entered into both of the textboxes. I was told to try and use this: Double::TryParse() but I'm brand new to C++ and can't figure out how to use it, even after checking the MSDN library. Here's my code: private: System::Void btnFtoC_Click(System::Object^ sender, System::EventArgs^ e) { // Convert the input in the Fahrenheit textbox to a double datatype named fahrenheit for manipulation double fahrenheit = Convert::ToDouble(txtFahrenheit->Text); // Set the result string to F * (5/9) -32 double result = fahrenheit * .5556 - 32; // Set the Celsius text box to display the result string txtCelsius->Text = result.ToString(); } private: System::Void btnCtoF_Click(System::Object^ sender, System::EventArgs^ e) { // Convert the input in the Celsius textbox to a double datatype name celsius for manipulation double celsius = Convert::ToDouble(txtCelsius2->Text); // Set the result2 string to C * (9/5) + 32 double result2 = celsius * 1.8 + 32; // Set the Fahrenheit text box to display the result2 string txtFahrenheit2->Text = result2.ToString(); }

    This is a form which retrieves data from db and displays them in table. At the beginning of each row there will be a check box. If there are 10 rows fetched, I ii check 5 rows and insert them in to diff db but here when, I click drop down box data is getting in to db automatically,bcoz I use onchange event. • Drop Down not even showing up in IE6

    - by blackessej
    I've got a drop down menu here that just plain won't show up in IE6. The site works perfectly in every other browser. Seems daft to lose sleep over IE6, I know, but the site is for a demographic who could very well still be using it. Here's the CSS: html { height:100%; } body, p, a, ul, li, ol, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { margin:0; padding:0; } body { behavior:url("csshover3.htc"); font-size:14px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color:#d3d3d3; height:100%; } h1 { font-size:18px; color:#752eca; text-decoration:none; } h2 { font-size:14px; color:#909090; text-decoration:none!important; } p { text-indent:20px; color:#000; } p a { color:#000; text-decoration:underline; } p.foot { text-indent:0px; } p.link { font-size:18px; color:#30F; text-decoration:underline!important; } a { color:#4d2288; text-decoration:none; outline:none; } a:visited { color:#4d2288; } p a:hover { text-decoration:underline!important; } ul#nav { padding:5px; margin:0px auto; width:100%; } ul#nav li a { display:block; font-weight:bold; padding:2px 10px; background:#bacddb; } ul#nav li a:hover { background:#888; color:#fff; } li { list-style:none; float:left; position:relative; width:225px; text-align:center; margin:0px auto; margin-right:4px; border:1px solid #4d2288; } li ul { display:none; position:relative; width:auto; top:0; left:0; margin-left:-1px; } li>ul { top:auto; left:auto; border-top:none; } li:hover ul, li.over ul { display:block; } ul#nav li.current a { background:#b8ab28; } ul#nav li.current a:hover { background:#888; } img { margin:10px 0 5px; } *html img { margin:20px; } .coltextimg { position:relative; float:left; background-position:left bottom; padding:0px 20px 10px 0px; border:none; } #maincontent { width:940px; margin:0px auto; postition:absolute; } *html #maincontent { margin-left:42px; } #header { float:left; width:100%; height:auto!important; height:100%; min-height:100%; margin:0px auto; background-image:url(images/banner_test.jpg); background-repeat:no-repeat; border:2px solid #752eca; -webkit-border-top-left-radius:10px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius:10px; -moz-border-radius-topleft:10px; -moz-border-radius-topright:10px; border-top-left-radius:10px; border-top-right-radius:10px; } .colmask { position:relative; margin-top:160px; clear:both; float:left; width:100%; overflow:hidden; } .colright, .colmid { float:left; width:100%; position:relative; } .col1, .col2 { float:left; position:relative; padding:10px 0 1em 0; overflow:hidden; } .twocol { background:#fff; } .twocol .colmid { right:45%; background:#fff; } .twocol .col1 { width:51%; left:47%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .col2 { width:41%; left:51%; text-align:justify; z-index:0; } .twocol .colimg { border:2px solid #a0a0a0; } .twocol .colvid1 { width:360px; height:240px; } .twocol .colvid2 { width:360px; height:240px; } #footer { text-align:center; font-size:9px; padding:10px 0 1em 0; clear:both; width:100%; height:100%; } *html #footer { height:43px; } #footer p a { text-decoration:none; } #lyr_ddmenu { position:absolute; z-index:1; height:10px; top:120px; float:left; width:1000px; margin:0px auto; padding:5px; } #contact { position:absolute; float:right; font-size:10px; } A.Controls:link { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:visited { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:active { color:#666666; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } A.Controls:hover { color:#be0000; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold; } And here's the html I'm having the specific problem with: <div id="maincontent"> <div id="header"> <div id="lyr_ddmenu"> <ul id="nav"> <li class="current"><href here...</a> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <li><href here...</a></li> <ul class="sub"> <li><href here...</a></li> </ul></li> </ul> </div> Thanks!

  • ASP.Net MVC 2 Auto Complete Textbox With Custom View Model Attribute & EditorTemplate

    - by SeanMcAlinden
    In this post I’m going to show how to create a generic, ajax driven Auto Complete text box using the new MVC 2 Templates and the jQuery UI library. The template will be automatically displayed when a property is decorated with a custom attribute within the view model. The AutoComplete text box in action will look like the following:   The first thing to do is to do is visit my previous blog post to put the custom model metadata provider in place, this is necessary when using custom attributes on the view model. http://weblogs.asp.net/seanmcalinden/archive/2010/06/11/custom-asp-net-mvc-2-modelmetadataprovider-for-using-custom-view-model-attributes.aspx Once this is in place, make sure you visit the jQuery UI and download the latest stable release – in this example I’m using version 1.8.2. You can download it here. Add the jQuery scripts and css theme to your project and add references to them in your master page. Should look something like the following: Site.Master <head runat="server">     <title><asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="TitleContent" runat="server" /></title>     <link href="../../Content/Site.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />     <link href="../../css/ui-lightness/jquery-ui-1.8.2.custom.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />     <script src="../../Scripts/jquery-1.4.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>     <script src="../../Scripts/jquery-ui-1.8.2.custom.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> </head> Once this is place we can get started. Creating the AutoComplete Custom Attribute The auto complete attribute will derive from the abstract MetadataAttribute created in my previous post. It will look like the following: AutoCompleteAttribute using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Web.Mvc; using System.Web.Routing; namespace Mvc2Templates.Attributes {     public class AutoCompleteAttribute : MetadataAttribute     {         public RouteValueDictionary RouteValueDictionary;         public AutoCompleteAttribute(string controller, string action, string parameterName)         {             this.RouteValueDictionary = new RouteValueDictionary();             this.RouteValueDictionary.Add("Controller", controller);             this.RouteValueDictionary.Add("Action", action);             this.RouteValueDictionary.Add(parameterName, string.Empty);         }         public override void Process(ModelMetadata modelMetaData)         {             modelMetaData.AdditionalValues.Add("AutoCompleteUrlData", this.RouteValueDictionary);             modelMetaData.TemplateHint = "AutoComplete";         }     } } As you can see, the constructor takes in strings for the controller, action and parameter name. The parameter name will be used for passing the search text within the auto complete text box. The constructor then creates a new RouteValueDictionary which we will use later to construct the url for getting the auto complete results via ajax. The main interesting method is the method override called Process. With the process method, the route value dictionary is added to the modelMetaData AdditionalValues collection. The TemplateHint is also set to AutoComplete, this means that when the view model is parsed for display, the MVC 2 framework will look for a view user control template called AutoComplete, if it finds one, it uses that template to display the property. The View Model To show you how the attribute will look, this is the view model I have used in my example which can be downloaded at the end of this post. View Model using System.ComponentModel; using Mvc2Templates.Attributes; namespace Mvc2Templates.Models {     public class TemplateDemoViewModel     {         [AutoComplete("Home", "AutoCompleteResult", "searchText")]         [DisplayName("European Country Search")]         public string SearchText { get; set; }     } } As you can see, the auto complete attribute is called with the controller name, action name and the name of the action parameter that the search text will be passed into. The AutoComplete Template Now all of this is in place, it’s time to create the AutoComplete template. Create a ViewUserControl called AutoComplete.ascx at the following location within your application – Views/Shared/EditorTemplates/AutoComplete.ascx Add the following code: AutoComplete.ascx <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl" %> <%     var propertyName = ViewData.ModelMetadata.PropertyName;     var propertyValue = ViewData.ModelMetadata.Model;     var id = Guid.NewGuid().ToString();     RouteValueDictionary urlData =         (RouteValueDictionary)ViewData.ModelMetadata.AdditionalValues.Where(x => x.Key == "AutoCompleteUrlData").Single().Value;     var url = Mvc2Templates.Views.Shared.Helpers.RouteHelper.GetUrl(this.ViewContext.RequestContext, urlData); %> <input type="text" name="<%= propertyName %>" value="<%= propertyValue %>" id="<%= id %>" class="autoComplete" /> <script type="text/javascript">     $(function () {         $("#<%= id %>").autocomplete({             source: function (request, response) {                 $.ajax({                     url: "<%= url %>" + request.term,                     dataType: "json",                     success: function (data) {                         response(data);                     }                 });             },             minLength: 2         });     }); </script> There is a lot going on in here but when you break it down it’s quite simple. Firstly, the property name and property value are retrieved through the model meta data. These are required to ensure that the text box input has the correct name and data to allow for model binding. If you look at line 14 you can see them being used in the text box input creation. The interesting bit is on line 8 and 9, this is the code to retrieve the route value dictionary we added into the model metada via the custom attribute. Line 11 is used to create the url, in order to do this I created a quick helper class which looks like the code below titled RouteHelper. The last bit of script is the code to initialise the jQuery UI AutoComplete control with the correct url for calling back to our controller action. RouteHelper using System.Web.Mvc; using System.Web.Routing; namespace Mvc2Templates.Views.Shared.Helpers {     public static class RouteHelper     {         const string Controller = "Controller";         const string Action = "Action";         const string ReplaceFormatString = "REPLACE{0}";         public static string GetUrl(RequestContext requestContext, RouteValueDictionary routeValueDictionary)         {             RouteValueDictionary urlData = new RouteValueDictionary();             UrlHelper urlHelper = new UrlHelper(requestContext);                          int i = 0;             foreach(var item in routeValueDictionary)             {                 if (item.Value == string.Empty)                 {                     i++;                     urlData.Add(item.Key, string.Format(ReplaceFormatString, i.ToString()));                 }                 else                 {                     urlData.Add(item.Key, item.Value);                 }             }             var url = urlHelper.RouteUrl(urlData);             for (int index = 1; index <= i; index++)             {                 url = url.Replace(string.Format(ReplaceFormatString, index.ToString()), string.Empty);             }             return url;         }     } } See it in action All you need to do to see it in action is pass a view model from your controller with the new AutoComplete attribute attached and call the following within your view: <%= this.Html.EditorForModel() %> NOTE: The jQuery UI auto complete control expects a JSON string returned from your controller action method… as you can’t use the JsonResult to perform GET requests, use a normal action result, convert your data into json and return it as a string via a ContentResult. If you download the solution it will be very clear how to handle the controller and action for this demo. The full source code for this post can be downloaded here. It has been developed using MVC 2 and Visual Studio 2010. As always, I hope this has been interesting/useful. Kind Regards, Sean McAlinden.

  • Difference between Factory Method and Abstract Factory design patterns using C#.Net

    - by nijhawan.saurabh
    First of all I'll just put both these patterns in context and describe their intent as in the GOF book: Factory Method: Define an interface for creating an object, but let subclasses decide which class to instantiate. Factory Method lets a class defer instantiation to subclasses.   Abstract Factory: Provide an interface for creating families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes.   Points to note:   Abstract factory pattern adds a layer of abstraction to the factory method pattern. The type of factory is not known to the client at compile time, this information is passed to the client at runtime (How it is passed is again dependent on the system, you may store this information in configuration files and the client can read it on execution). While implementing Abstract factory pattern, the factory classes can have multiple factory methods. In Abstract factory, a factory is capable of creating more than one type of product (Simpilar products are grouped together in a factory)   Sample implementation of factory method pattern   Let's see the class diagram first:                   ProductFactory.cs // ----------------------------------------------------------------------- // <copyright file="ProductFactory.cs" company=""> // TODO: Update copyright text. // </copyright> // -----------------------------------------------------------------------   namespace FactoryMethod {     using System; • Javascript not working in IE but works in Firefox chrome

    - by user1290528
    So i have the following php page with a java script that gets the total of items based on their quatity, then inputs the total into a text box for each item. In ie the text boxes are being filled with $NaN. While in firefox, chrome the text boxes are filled with the correct values. Any help would be graatly appreciated. <?php echo $_SESSION['SESS_MEMBER_ID']; require_once('auth.php'); ?> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <meta content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" http-equiv="Content-Type"> <title>Breakfast Menu</title> <link href="loginmodule.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> <script type='text/javascript'> var totalarray=new Array(); var totalarray2= new Array(); var runningtotal = 0; var runningtotal2 = 0; var discount = .2; var discounttotal = 0; var discount1 = 0; runningtotal = runningtotal * 1; runningtotal2 = runningtotal2 * 1; function displayResult(price,init) { var newstring = "quantity"+init; var totstring = "total"+init; var quantity = document.getElementById(newstring).value; var quantity = parseFloat(quantity); var test = price * quantity; var test = test.toFixed(2); document.getElementById(newstring).value = quantity; document.getElementById(totstring).value = "$" + test; totalarray[init] = test; getTotal(); } function getTotal(){ runningtotal = 0; var i=0; for (i=0;i<totalarray.length;i++){ totalarray[i] = totalarray[i] *1; runningtotal = runningtotal + totalarray[i]; discounttotal = totalarray[i] * discount; discounttotal = totalarray[i] - discounttotal; This line is where IE shows its first error document.getElementById('totalcost').value="$" + runningtotal.toFixed(2); } var orderpart1 = document.getElementById('totalcost').value; var orderpart1 = orderpart1.substr(1); var orderpart1 = orderpart1 * 1; var orderpart2 = document.getElementById('totalcost2').value; var orderpart2 = orderpart2.substr(1); var orderpart2 = orderpart2 * 1; var ordertot = orderpart1 + orderpart2; document.getElementById('ordertotal').value ="$"+ ordertot.toFixed(2) } function displayResult2(price2,init2) { var newstring2 = "quantity2"+init2; var totstring2 = "total2"+init2; var quantity2 = document.getElementById(newstring2).value; var quantity2 = parseFloat(quantity2); var test2 = price2 * quantity2; var test2 = test2.toFixed(2); document.getElementById(newstring2).value = quantity2; document.getElementById(totstring2).value = "$" + test2; totalarray2[init2] = test2; getTotal2(); } function getTotal2(){ runningtotal2 = 0; var i=0; for (i=0;i<totalarray2.length;i++){ totalarray2[i] = totalarray2[i] *1; runningtotal2 = runningtotal2+ totalarray2[i]; This is where IE shows its second error document.getElementById('totalcost2').value="$" + runningtotal2.toFixed(2); }//IE Shows Second error here var orderpart1 = document.getElementById('totalcost').value; var orderpart1 = orderpart1.substr(1); var orderpart1 = orderpart1 * 1; var orderpart2 = document.getElementById('totalcost2').value; var orderpart2 = orderpart2.substr(1); var orderpart2 = orderpart2 * 1; var ordertot = orderpart1 + orderpart2; document.getElementById('ordertotal').value ="$"+ ordertot.toFixed(2); } </script> </head> <body> <?php include("newnew.php"); ?> <td style="vertical-align: top; width: 80%; height:80%;"><br> <div style="text-align: center;"> <form action="testplaceorder.php" method="post" onSubmit="return confirm('Are you sure?');"> <h4>Employee Breakfast Order Form</h4> <h1 align="left">Breakfest Foods</h1> <table border='0' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0'> <tr> <td> <table width="100%" border="1"> <tr> <th>Item&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp</th> <th>Price&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp </th> <th>Quantity&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp</th> <th>Total&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp</th> </tr> <?php mysql_connect("localhost", "seniorproject", "farmingdale123") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_select_db("fsenior") or die(mysql_error()); $result = mysql_query("SELECT name, price,foodid FROM Food where foodtype='br'") or die(mysql_error()); $init = 0; while(list($name, $price, $brId) = mysql_fetch_row($result)) { echo "<tr> <td>$name</td> <td>\$$price</td> <td><select name='quantity$init' id='quantity$init' onchange='displayResult($price,$init)'><option>0</option><option>1</option><option>2</option><option>3</option><option>4</option><option>5</option><option>6</option><option>7</option><option>8</option><option>9</option></td> <td><input name='total$init' type='text' id='total$init' readonly='readonly' value='\$0.00'></td> </tr>" ; echo "<script type='text/javascript'>displayResult($price,$init);</script>"; $foodname = "'SESS_FOODNAME_" . $init .   • How to get dropdown value using jsp:useBean and jsp:setProperty?

    - by littlevahn
    I have a rather simple form in JSP that looks like this: <form action="response.jsp" method="POST"> <label>First Name:</label><input type="text" name="firstName" /><br> <label>Last Name:</label><input type="text" name="lastName" /><br> <label>Email:</label><input type="text" name="email" /><br> <label>Re-enter Email:</label><input type="text" name="emailRe" /><br> <label>Address:</label><input type="text" name="address" /><br> <label>Address 2:</label><input type="text" name="address2" /><br> <label>City:</label><input type="text" name="city" /><br> <label>Country:</label> <select name="country"> <option value="0">--Country--</option> <option value="1">United States</option> <option value="2">Canada</option> <option value="3">Mexico</option> </select><br> <label>Phone:</label><input type="text" name="phone" /><br> <label>Alt Phone:</label><input type="text" name="phoneAlt" /><br> <input type="submit" value="submit" /> </form> But when I try and access the value of the select box in my Java class I get null. Ive tried reading it in as a String and an Array of strings neither though seems to be grabbing the right value. The response.jsp looks like this: <%@ page language="java" %> <%@ page import="java.util.*" %> <%@page contentType="text/html" pageEncoding="UTF-8"%> <%! %> <jsp:useBean id="formHandler" class="validation.RegHandler" scope="request"> <jsp:setProperty name="formHandler" property="*" /> </jsp:useBean> <% if (formHandler.validate()) { %> <jsp:forward page="success.jsp"/> <% } else { %> <jsp:forward page="retryReg.jsp"/> <% } %> I already have Java script validation in place but I wanted to make sure I covered validation and checking for non-JS users. The RegHandler just uses the name field to refer to the value in the form. Any Idea how I could access the select box's value?
