Examples: First Drop Down : Listing out all the "department name" using select query. • What to use for an event listing site? [on hold]

  I have a site which lets users buy & sell tickets, but it's built on wordpress & buddypress. So it's very heavy and messy. I would like to re-do the whole site on something lighter, cleaner and solid. The main functionality for user would have to be as follows: Register or login via Facebook. Create events and sell tickets to them. See ticket sales statistics Upload photos and associate those with events. Buy event tickets, print pdf ticket. Comment, favourite and like events. What would be your suggestions? PHP framework? CMS? CMF? I must say that I'm a front-end dev so building a system from scratch on my own would take a while. I'd be interested more in a "skeleton" app solution or something similar.

  Hello i am finally getting to grips with CSS after about 4 years of picking it up as i go. This problem though has had me stumped for a few hours now so ive gave up and decided to ask for some help and learn from it that way.   I am building a small social web application. I am developing it with rails. I want some cheap or free image hosting which I can use as my image repository for my website because I can't afford Amazon cloud store or something like that. Can I use flickr, imageshack or service something like that? Do they allow me to store images for my website? Suppose I wanna use pics for blogpost and I will be extracting pics from their api and show on my blog post. Is that possible? Sorry I'm beginner.

• Should I use heroku or should I have my own ssl? [closed]

  Base on your experience, can you please advice what will be better for me? Issue : I build applications and there are 2 major constraints. 1. ssl is needed since I used facebook api's. So, only heroku is a good option. 2. My web components tend to hit the Max_Execution_Time very often, since I pull a lot of data using the facebook api. Future possible purpose of this site : 1. Will use more apis from google, twitter, future. 2. Might request for donations. 3. Just for hobby. I have two options : 1. Create a web site in heroku itself by converting all the php components to a background worker in python using django. 2. Dont use heroku at all. Do the the complete hosting with godaddy (shared plan). And buy an ssl so that I can use fb apis etc. In this scenario, what do you suggest me to do?

  I need to setup a cronjob on my webhost. The documentation for my webapp reads as follows: you will need to create following cronjob: /public_html/cake/console/cake -app /public_html/app master Also, I want any output written to a log file. My hosts documentation says this: You can have cron send an email everytime it runs a command. If you do not want an email to be sent for an individual cron job you can redirect the command's output to /dev/null like this: mycommand /dev/null 2&1 Can someone help me write the cron job? I dont know the syntax at all. Thanks for the help!

  Possible Duplicate: How Does Domain Know Where Your Web Host Is Located? I just purchased a domain name from RapidNames, and a hosting plan at JustHost. I was told to enter JustHost's name server (ns1.justhost.com) in my domain name's name server field and wait for 24 hours for the process to be complete. I do not understand how RapidNames can find my account on JustHost's server as I am sure I am not JustHost's only customer. I have read the article How DNS Works that John Conde has posted, but I still do not understand the issue. After reading several other articles, I am beginning to understand how it works, but I would still like someone to confirm if I am correct or not. From my understanding, linking your domain name to your web host is a two step process. First, you need to tell your domain name who your web host is. This is done by providing the two DNS server addresses. Secondly, you need to tell your web host which domain names you own by entering your domain names into the domain name manager. As a result, when someone queries your domain name, they will be forwarded to your web host. The web host will look in their database to match the domain name the account's owner, and then serve the appropriate website. I want to confirm if my understanding of how a domain knows where your web host is located is accurate?

• In addition to Google's First Flick Free, should you whitelist search engine bots past a paywall?

  Our site has subscription-only pages - non-subscribed visitors see a snippet preview. As per Google's FCF requirements, your first 5 hits to a subscriber-only pages with .google. as the referrer, you see the full page. In addition to this, should we whitelist search engine bots so that they can index the full content? I assume this is not required for Google, which can use FCF to index our content, but what about other search engines? Is this considered cloaking? My gut says that whitelisting bots past the paywall is bad practice., but I wanted to confirm - any evidence or references would be amazing.

  I've set up a WordPress blog. Since I have to log into it from many different locations/machines, I've also got an SSL certificate, and set up Apache to redirect HTTP to HTTPS. It all works, but I'm wondering whether that's an overkill. Since most people who go to my site don't have to log in, I'm starting to wonder whether HTTPS has some drawbacks. If so, should I look for a way to make HTTPS optional?

  I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

• How to Program AWS Spot Instances to Strategically Bid So the Auction is Never Lost Until a Competitor Beats the Maximum I'm Willing to Pay?

  I believe I'm in the right section of stack exchange to ask this. If not, let me know. I only use Amazon Web Services for temporary type hosting services, so the spot instances are quite valuable to me. I would also just make an instance and start and stop it - but - that doesn't necessarily fit my bootstrapped budget sadly. Anyways, it really kills me when someone outbids me on a spot instance I have (I tend to go for the larger ones which there are fewer of available) and I get randomly kicked off. I know or at least I believe there is a way to program in something somehow to dynamically change your bidding price to beat a potential competitor's if their's is higher than yours. Now, I previously believed Amazon would just charge me for the highest price right above the next lowest competitor automatically (eliminating the need for this) - so if I bid too high, then I only pay what I would of needed to in order to win and keep the auction. Essentially, I thought my bid price was my max bid price. Apparently, according to my bills and several experiments I've done - this is not the case. They charge me for whatever I bid even when I know there is no one else around to counter bid me. I needed to clarify that, but let me get back to the main point: Let's say I'm bidding $0.50, competitor comes in and bids 0.55 cents. I get kicked off. I want to have it to where I'd set a maximum I'm willing to pay (let's say $1.00 here), and then when competitor comes in and tries to bid $.55, my bid is dynamically adjusted to beat his at $0.56 up until he breaks my $1.00 threshold. I've been reading the guides and although they are more or less straightforward, I feel like they leave a few holes in them that end up confusing me. Like, for instance, where do I input said command or when do I do it? Maybe I'm just tech illiterate and need help deciphering these guides. • Is there a way to forward emails associated with a domain without a mail server?

  A client owns example1.com but wants to also purchase example2.com and have it point to their original site at example1.com. No problem there. But they also want any emails going to example2.com to be forwarded to their counter parts at example1.com Eg: if someone emails [email protected] it will be forwarded to [email protected] They only way I can think of doing this at the moment is to set up host for example2.com and then set up mail forwarders in cpanel. But this seems a bit excessive and costly. Does anyone know another, cheaper way of doing this?

• Changing hosts but keep old emails [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change host / keep emails OK here's the situation...I'm trying to transfer my domain and email address to a new hosting service and I would like to start using Google's domain apps for my email, etc. My email address is currently on a WebMail type platform and when I move my domain and start using Google domain apps I would also like to keep the old emails and have them imported the the email address on Google. Note: The email address will be the same on both hosts. For example [email protected]. So its keeping the same address between two different systems. I've been Googling how to do this for awhile and all the migrate options that come up don't appear in the the Google inbox setting or domain apps config settings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• A relatively new blog seems to be getting very poor Google indexing

  I have a new blog that is 2 months old. In the first few weeks, it was getting indexed nicely and my GoogleWebmaster reports were showing that it was getting crawled and began ranking for some terms. Then as I kept writing, the GoogleWebmaster report thinned out and showed less and less terms that this blog ranks for. Now there are only 4 terms with one of them being my name. • Improving FAQ SEO with multiple pages?

Neither the questions or answers are very long and most of them have almost the same question but with a word or two differentiating themselves from the rest of the questions.   There are more than 10 categories in my site, users can register more than one category. My php script prepare contents of each category, according to user preference my script merge those contents for each user. so every user can get what category they want. Problem is I want to send 340+ mails per hour and dreamhost dont allow. What do you suggest? I think to a service like mailchimp but I couldnt find that scenario, do they support category & content etc. Can I use smtp in dreamhost?

• Why are new pages not being indexed and old pages stay in the index?

  I currently have a site that was recently restructured, causing much of its content to be reposted, creating new URL's for each page. To avoid duplicates, all of the existing pages were added to the robots file. That said, it has now been over a week - I know Google has recrawled the site - and when I search for term X, it is stil the old page that is ranking, with the new one nowhere to be seen. I'm assuming it's a cached version, but why are so many of the old pages still appearing in the index? Furthermore, all "tags" pages (it's a Q&A site, like this one) were also added to the robots a few months ago, yet I think they are all still appearing in the index. Anyone got any ideas about why this is happening, and how I can get my new pages indexed?

Once i've made some changes to it I need to host it at alternative physical server/hosting (I intend using a dedicated server I have access to with a technical domain name currently). However, the client would ideally like to keep the existing URL as it has been used extensively in marketing. I've done HTTP redirects and forwards and 301 redirects in the past, but I'm not sure how or even if I can do what the client wants. How can I achieve this, possibly using .htaccess and DNS entries? • How do I recover a site after WordPress' Automatic Update has failed?

  I manage several WordPress websites, and successfully recently used the Automatic Upgrade feature to bring them up to 3.1. However, on one of the sites, I received a 503 (I believe it was 503). After that I was presented with "The service is unavailable." whenever I tried to access any page, including the index page, wp-admin, etc. I had similar problems before when a WordPress site got stuck in maintenance mode, and all I needed to do was login via FTP and rename or delete the .maintenance file. I tried that in this case, but that didn't do the trick. I am now presented with "Fatal error: Call to undefined function require_wp_db() in **\wp-settings.php on line 71" I can't figure out how to fix this problem, and I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you for reading.
