  I have a network application that needs to send messages at 60 times a second. The messages are usually 300-400 bytes, but can be as large as 1500. The default setting for SO_SNDBUF is too small and limits the number of message that can be sent if the network latency is anything greater then 100ms. The naive solution is to just bump the SO_SNDBUF size to to something large. However, depending on the latency and the packet size that could be anywhere from 64K to 8MB. One of Vista's new features is TCP autotuning. Autotuning monitors the tcp connection and dynamically adjust the buffer sizes to allow for optimal communication. I would like to use auto tuning on our windows xp machine so I don't need to guess what my buffers sizes should be. Is there a way to install either a microsoft or 3rd party tcp autotuner on windows xp?

• Fast, reliable data transfers from/to China

  We are a small company and we will need to transfer rather large amounts of data (10GB+ each time) between Europe and China in the near future. As many may have experienced, Internet connections to or from China can be rather unreliable and slow at times without any apparent reason. For example, while sending data to China via FTP generally works well, it can be painfully slow in the other direction. Currently, we are investigating new ways to have high transfer rates in both directions. So far we have tried: FTP (see above) FTP over VPN services (generally slower than direct connections) F2F (like Retroshare or Freenet - slow!!) Aspera (fast but expensive!) BitTorrent (unreachable end nodes, b/c of firewalls which we must not configure) We would like to try: Cloud storage (e.g. Amazon S3, Google Storage) - are those services always and reliably reachable from inside China? Point-to-Point VPN (currently not possible, b/c of the network, see above) I'd be especially grateful to hear from people who have already dealt with this kind of problem before.

• In Linux, are there any plug-ins to let me do `<Win>`+`<Num>` style app switching (like Windows 7's superbar)?

  Using Windows 7's superbar, I can select/launch the 2nd application group by <Win>+<2>. We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts. Any suggestions? This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?

• Updating AFP version on Windows Server 2003

  Hi, We have a couple of Macs, running Leopard and Snow Leopard in our otherwise pure Windows environment. We cannot get file names longer than 31 characters and some times the file permissions gets scrabbled (users can't delete their own folders or access files they usually access). This only occurs when connecting through AFP, We've tried with SMB but it's horribly slow when working with larger documents, so it's not an option. I somewhere read about AFP 3.0 being the answer. So my question is: Is there some way of updating my "AFP version" on Windows Server 2003, or does anyone have a different idea of what might help to resolve this situation?

• Laptops trying to connect via wireless? Only able to connect only via wired connection

  It seems that all the wireless laptops in the office have disconnected and are unable to reconnect to the wifi after a terrible storm caused some power interruptions. Troubleshooting actions Verify wireless broadcasting is up With each laptop i ended up flushing their dns cache on Win 7 (ipconfig /flush ) Performed an ipconfig /all to see what the new ip is Made sure password was correct Reset the router (multiple times) restarted each laptop. Tried connecting wirelessly Am i missing some small detail ? Network information The router is a linksys/cisco WRVS4400N router. Supports a lot of fancy features i don't know how to use. • machine crash when connecting to external harddisk

  i recently had a problem with my laptop. when i booted up the machine, i would get a SMART failure error message and when i pressed F1 to continue, it would take a very long time to boot and it would come back to the same error message again. thinking that my hard disk was dying, i bought a new hard disk and installed on my laptop and so now my laptop is alright. however i need to recover data from that old hard disk, so i bought an external hard disk case and placed the old hard disk onto the case and connected to my laptop with USB. the first few times when i connected, i could see the files from the old hard disk and managed to copy some files over although it took extremely long to transfer. but now whenever i connect to the old hard disk, after a few minutes, my laptop will crash and re-boot. do you think my old hard disk is dead beyond repair? or you can offer some help here? any assistance would be appreciated!

• Windows 7 freezing unexpectedly

  I have a Windows 7 computer here, which is freezing between 2 times a day and 1 time every second day. I see no problem, no special drivers, no special Apps are open, no encryption or something like that. Apps usually open then are Firefox, Thunderbird, Eclipse and maybe Office. Computer is just freezing. No Reboot, no shutdown, no bluescreen and no error. User has to hardreset it. Eventlog shows me an kernel error saying it has been unexpected rebooted due to an fatal error, but no statement about what kind of error happended. Anyone an idea what it can be? Chkdisk should be ok (currently, I run it a second time).

• Why does my PC sometimes think I am constantly pressing the control key?

  I was browsing the web with Chrome and pressed f. A search box appeared. I then pressed s, after which Chrome asked if I wanted to save the web page. I soon realized that my PC was thinking that I was constantly pressing the Ctrl key regardless of what program I was using. In response, I tried clicking both of my Ctrl keys a few times to no avail. This problem arises sporadically as I work. I am not sure what is triggering it. Why could this problem be occurring? Is it the keyboard or software? How should I respond?

• TTL and traceroute showing different values for same domain

  y am i getting two different output for tracert and ping. Ping Result showing total hops of 20 and tracert showing 8. default ttl value on my linux machine 64,icmp echo reply ttl value 44. 64-44=20 but tracert is showing only 8 hops. What can be the reason? If tracert is implemented using ttl then why am i getting different values for same domain.no matter how many times i tried. Fo google and google services,ttl value and tracrt are same,but for other domains its different.

• Ubuntu server hangs on reboot "could not stat resume device file"

  Instead of booting into the running system this machine stops and on the terminal I can see a message: could not stat resume device file /dev/sdb5 When I attach a keyboard and press enter the boot continues and the machine comes up like normal. But it's essential that this machine comes up under most circumstancs alone. There never was something like a "resume" on this machine. I tried several times to reboot, but this does not happen on all boots, I can not find a pattern here. There is a software raid running on the box. • problem getting scanning to work on epson workforce 610

  i installed the latest epson software on my user's computer. everything works fine from the admin account (printing / scanning). yet, when i go to user's account (the standard user mode account the company employee uses on there machine) and launch the epson scan software or scan settings software it times out and puts up a dialog box asking me if i want to use the trouble assistant. my question is why would this all work in the admin account yet not work in the user mode account? any help is greatly appreciated.

• OpenSCAD keeps crashing when I raise my precision past $fn=29?

  Out of the blue, OpenSCAD decided to stop working for me on designs that previously rendered just fine. After playing around I found out that any time I use a precision greater than $fn=29 the program crashes with the message "openscad.exe has stopped working". I can use any precision 29 and below, but the second I adjust it to even 30 the program crashes. This is a major problem as before I was using a precision of 100, and without it the design's moving parts do not work on print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times and haven't been able to fix the problem. I have watched the CPU during the calculations and it never reaches more than 35%. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I also have not changed computers or even the code. Thanks! I am using Windows 32 bit, Version 2013.06. The default version from the website.

• LGA 1155 or LGA 2011? Which has a brighter future?

  I'd basically like to rehash this question, only 22 months later. The last system I built was in 2006, shortly after AMD came out with socket AM2. I was able to upgrade the processor on it 3 times and would love to do the same with my next computer. Since AMD seems to be lagging, I'm going for Intel this time. I've read that Intel changes chip sets all the time, so there's no safe bet. I also read (1 comment on 1 forum) that said LGA 2011 will have 8-core support, but LGA 1155 won't, which leads me to believe that LGA 2011 might be a better choice. Anyone have any good advice for me?

• SQL Server Express 2005 SP3 Update Keeps Coming Back (KB995706)

  Hi Guys, I have installed the above update through Windows Update. The update went through, reported a successful installation, and then straight after that it came back as an available update. I have done it a few times and my update log now contains multiple successful installations of KB995706. I have tried to uncheck it in the list of updates but it keeps coming back as well. The machine is a Server 2008 RC2 Standard. It's got SQL Server 2005 Express as well as SQL Server 2008 Standard. In the Event Log: Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) followed by Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. • Restrict Overriding memory_limit in php.ini

  We have a issue that just came to our notice, some of our developers used ini_set('memory_limit', -1) to over-ride the php.ini memory_limit settings in their code files. Due to which sometimes our Memory/CPU usage is way far more than usual and we even have experienced server hanging/crashing many times. Is there any way to restrict these changes for certain params like memory_limit, upload_max_filesize & post_max_size? Users should not be able to edit them after a certain limit set? Sorry if i asked a dumb question, tried searching but there was no reference to this only found answers asking for increasing these parameters.

• Reverse proxy using hop and RDP

  I am trying to connect from Vista to XP using RDP via reverse proxy using putty and an intermidiate host. There are myriad articles on the internet how to do it using vnc, ssh servers, winsshd, etc, but I can't find anything that helps me in this specific case. What I have: Windows XP host behind the firewall - 'destination' linux host running ssh on the internet - 'intermediate' windows host behind the firewall - 'source' All I want to do is open reverse tunnel from destination to intermidiate and use this tunnel for connecting back from the source. That should be simple to setup, however I just cannot make it. This is what I do: On 'destination', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate' using following settings: source port 3389, destination is 'source:33389', direction is local On 'source', open putty session, create tunnel to 'intermediate'using following settings: source port 33389, destination is 'destination:33389', direction is local Finally, on source, open termnal services client and connect it to localhost:33389.Unfortunately it seems like packets do go somewhere but eventually client times out. Am I totally misunderstanding the concept? Please help!

• How do I log which process is deleting a file on Windows XP?

  I'm having an issue with a file getting deleted seemingly randomly throughout the day. The vendor of the software whose file is getting deleete says that another piece of software installed on the computer is deleting it, while the other software's vendor says the opposite. I've tried using Process Monitor so I can pinpoint exactly what's deleting it, but even when filtered specifically to that file, createfile operations are being triggered a few times a second, and I can't seem to filter it to deletions specifically. Is there a tool or script I can use to specifically monitor deletion attempts on a single file?

• Is there anything that can be done to make X forwarding over LAN less painful?

  I have two *nix machines that I like to remotely do graphical things sometimes with. One of those machines is my Arch Linux media server, and another is my OpenBSD router/general server. My current task was installing a Windows XP over virtual box on my media server. I preferred to do the installation from my main workstation so that I could continue to watch TV from my media server on it's "actual" display. I soon noticed that X forwarding is quite painful though, even over low-latency LAN connections. Are there any settings I can tweak to make it a bit less painfully slow, jittery, and laggy? My LAN is rather small, 100Mbit, and ping times to the other box average at about 0.15ms. Also, I know Virtualbox has a VNC mode it can use instead of doing X forwarding, but this particular task was just an example

  Exchange 2010 sp2 Outlook 2007/2010 Server 2008 I have managed to set up several room mailboxes in exchange, people are able to book the rooms and they get a response from the exchange server. this is brilliant. however users are unable to view the calendar of the room mailbox to see what times are available, in a ideal world I would like users to only see if the room is free or not. • Performance issues with new dedicated server [closed]

  I have just subscribed to a new dedicated server and am getting worst than expected PHP execution performance. Execution times are twice as high as on my old mutualized server! • Windows won't ctrl+c and ctrl+v

  Using Ctrl+C and V I am unable to copy or paste anything. I have tried many different applications and still no luck. I am able to copy/paste via the shortcut menu when you right click the mouse. Ctrl+F works which means the Ctrl button is functional. I've tried restoring to an earlier restore point. I also ran SFC /SCANNOW (System File Checker) which did not find any errors. Ctrl+C and then right click and paste doesn't work either. I have tried with external and internal keyboard and still no luck. I've clicked on all the relevant search results from Google but none of them work for me. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue and how I can correct it? This problem comes and goes at random times.

• Setting up Kerberos SSO in Windows 2008 network

  We recently introduced Kerberos (SPNEGO) Single Sign-on in our web-portal, and tested it on a Windows network with Windows 2003 domain controller. Now, trying to test it on Windows 2008 R2 controlled network, SSO just doesn't work due to defective tokens. Up to the moment I was pretty sure that there's something wrong about environment and that were NTLM tokens. We double checked IE settings etc, but nothing helped. Then we checked the following settings for both users (logged on a client test-machine, and the one used as a Service Principal): This account supports Kerberos AES 128 bit encryption. This account supports Kerberos AES 256 bit encryption. .. and error message changed to ' GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Encryption type AES256CTS mode with HMAC SHA1-96 is not supported/enabled) It makes me think that Internet Explorer receives Kerberos tokens at all times, and there's just some configuration missing, or it was ktpass.exe to be incorrectly executed. • VMware - Watching multiple virtual machine screens

  Hi, I don't know even if I put the question right, but here's what I'd like to accomplish. I have avoided specifying exact Vmware virtualization product here because I'm not sure which one would be most suitable for the task at hand. I am developing an application that works in local network. This application has to run on several computers at the same time, and it's important to me, as a developer and tester, to see (literally) how it behaves at all times on all computers. Is there any way to connect to screens of virtual machines deployed on ESX, ESXi, Sever 2.0, or some other product, so that I can see something like grid of screens, say 4x4 or 6x4 or whatever number of scaled screens, at the same time? Ability to interact with screens directly from grid (by double-clicking a screen, for instance, and then getting full resolution screen) would be greatly appreciated, of course. I hope that someone understood what I meant here. :)
